Queensland racing metro this Saturday returns to the Sunshine Coast for a nine race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:57) Hotspot Titanium Handicap (75) 2200m
Going with the horse on the up which I think is 7 Pegapus (Bet Now: $3.00) for Matty Dunn. Had been racing well without winning but that all changed on Murwillumbah Cup Day over 2000m where she took on what looked an okay field and she bolted in, loving the step up in trip. Don’t see the trip being an issue and she looks to have a touch more brilliance than this lot.
4 Monaco Snob (Bet Now: $2.90) is a Rob Heathcoate trained gelding who is in a real purple patch. Impressive winner over the 2180m at Ipswich before racing at this track/distance and being even more impressive, charging clear late. Hardest test to date here against better opposition, but hard to ignore the way he’s going about it.
I reckon 6 Antigone (Bet Now: $7.50) will be suited getting back to the bigger track. She was good here at this track/distance behind Fighting Teo before going to Doomben last Saturday where she got back and didn’t come into the race at all behind Kubis. Can definitely win this race if the breaks go her way.
Race 2. (13:32) Kirralee Barnard- Summer Surf Ambassador Handicap (0MW) 1200m
I think 9 Intrinsic (Bet Now: $3.40) is a great bet here. Kris Lees trains this mare, who has only won the one from six, but has contested much stronger races than what she faces here. She ran over 1200m on Wyong Cup Day and I thought she was very good from the back behind Inanup. Her overall form reads much better than these. Hopefully she travels up well and brings her best.
6 Smartyspy (Bet Now: $2.90) is a Smart Missile mare for Chris Munce who has really turned the corner since joining the stable after formerly being with Bjorn Baker. She is 2/2 since coming north, winning her maiden at the Gold Coast before defying a betting drift at the Ipswich midweeks when bolting in. Harder here but hard to ignore what she’s done.
1 Hirtshals (Bet Now: $3.90) is a Brian Smith mare who should be up on speed and giving her all. That was the case when she ran over this track/distance three weeks ago and she gave a really good kick but couldn’t quite hold out the finale of the low flying Jardin Rouge. Will give herself every chance to win. Just needs to be stronger at the end.
Race 3. (14:07) Paddy Walsh Painting Plate (Class 3) 1000m
Keen to see what 7 Mogador (Bet Now: $6.00) does here fresh. Former Godolphin sprinter who had three runs for the Heinrich/Rogers team last prep before being tipped out, the best effort being last start when a narrow second. Has had a full prep now in Queensland and I thought his trial last Tuesday was very good I thought.
9 From Within (Bet Now: $1.35) is a lovely mare for Toby Edmonds but I’m just not sure what happens from the wide gate and how much work she’ll do from the wide gate. She’s had reasonable draws at her past couple and her sustained speed from the front proved too good. Harder here, but has to go in the numbers.
Race does really fall away behind this pair. 3 Parlay Vous (Bet Now: $9.50) could be an improver. First run for the Guy stable after formerly being in Sydney. He resumed on Wyong Cup Day and was okay without being great behind a star filly in Smart Melody. That form reads very well for this. Market will be the guide.
Race 4. (14:42) Marcoola SLSC Nippers Handicap 1000m
I think the safe option is 1 Defence Missile (Bet Now: $3.20). Ran over 1200m at Doomben a fortnight back and though helped by bias towards those on speed, he absolutely bolted in, winning by five and running sharp time. Back to 1000m no issue, draws to get a suck run near the speed and the claim for Taylor Marshall helps.
5 Racecourse Road (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Show A Heart gelding for Chris Munce who trialled well prior to resuming at this track/distance three weeks ago where he showed great speed from the wide gate to lead and gave a good kick when challenged but just found Spending My Time too good on the peg. Should take improvement from that and is a leading contender.
10 Cailini (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Tony Gollan trained filly who was impressive on debut at Ipswich before being below par here behind Phantom Shadow. Stepped back to 1000m and was a real closer late when a narrow third to Spending My Time. A repeat effort of last start and I think she’ll figure in the finish again.
Race 5. (15:22) Bake Boss Handicap 1000m
2 Hi I’m Back (Bet Now: $6.50) is a son of Sequalo resuming for the Tony Gollan stable. He is an absolute bomb when produced fresh, winning one and placing in a further five from seven career first up attempts. Lethal on firm ground too so he gets conditions to suit and he looks wound up to run well with two solid trial wins under the belt.
Gee 1 Dal Cielo (Bet Now: $2.00) is racing well at the moment for Kris Lees. Unlucky not to win two back at Rosehill behind Trekking before backing up a week later at the Gold Coast where he was backed off the map and under a lovely ride from Ryan Maloney he proved far too good. Looks well place here at 1000m and the recent trial win was sharp.
I reckon 6 Volkhoff (Bet Now: $16.00) is still a working progress for the Guy stable at the Gold Coast. Former blacktype performer in WA who has had a couple of runs in Queensland and you’d have to say has been disappointing, but she was very good when over in the West so I’m happy to keep an eye on her because her best would see her go close here. Really good third up record also.
Race 6. (16:02) Yaroomba Beach Handicap (0MW) 1200m
I’m a fan of 8 Jack’s Bar (Bet Now: $3.50) and I’m confident he can measure up. Kris Lees trains this gelding, who has been quite consistent right throughout his career, winning three and placing in a further five from nine starts. Loved the way he knuckled down to win over 1200m at Newcastle last time. Was there to be beaten but he found plenty when challenged. Harder here, but confident he runs well.
I think back to 1200m will really suit 6 Capital Connection (Bet Now: $3.80). The 1350m was always the query when racing at Doomben a fortnight ago and in the end that trip saw him out IMO when midfield behind the handy galloper Scallopini. Back to 1200m will suit and the run prior at this track/distance behind Tawfiq Boy was a beauty.
7 Sir Magic (Bet Now: $17.00) looks to be another horse suited back to 1200m. He was tested at 1350m at Doomben last time and just didn’t run the trip out behind Scallopini. Form prior was quite good and I think back in trip helps his cause, as we saw when trained by Angela Davies. He can bounce back for sure.
Race 7. (16:42) Marcoola Surf Club Handicap 1400m
Now that she’s got a win on the board, I’m confident that 3 Zumbelina (Bet Now: $2.45) can repeat the dose. Really good effort at this track/distance two back behind Divine Unicorn before racing at the Doomben 1350m where Lloyd gave her a peach and the mare proved far too good for her rivals. Back to the Sunny Coast 1400m, she looks a leading chance.
11 Zamex (Bet Now: $10.00) has been up a little while for Matty Dunn but he continues to race in good form. He comes here off the back of a dead heat win alongside Future Event in the Murwillumbah Cup where he hit the front and to the eye looked beat but he was able to share the spoils. Good record at 1400m and dry tracks are key to him.
9 Time To Torque (Bet Now: $6.00) is getting close to D-Day. Gary Doughty trains this bloke, who is a city class, borderline Stakes class horse when he’s right, but he’s just been a touch disappointing this time in. He ran over 1350m in the Zumbelina race at Doomben where he got back and though he made ground, he was never a winning factor. Perhaps back on a bigger track will help his cause.
Race 8. (17:22) Marcoola Surf life Saving Club Handicap (75) 1400m
Taking a chance on the Mack Griffith trained 2 Schedule (Bet Now: $23.00), who is first up here. We saw last Saturday that stablemate Most Exalted ran a beauty fresh and I’m hoping this bloke can run up to that. Has showed good promise right throughout his career but petered off towards the end of last prep. Been given a good break and to my eye trialled up really well at Muswellbrook. 1400m fresh tells me he’s here to run well.
8 Impasse (Bet Now: $4.60) is a son of Sepoy for Chris Waller who comes to Queensland. Put together a couple of nice wins at Kembla and Warwick Farm respectively before down the track efforts at his next two. Can certainly win if he runs up to his best. All depends how he has settled in. Market will be the guide.
9 Dream Kisses (Bet Now: $3.30) is a very consistent mare who has been quite good in two runs for Tony Gollan…just can’t quite put a win on the board. Ran over 1200m at Doomben a fortnight back where she chased hard down the straight but From Within just proved too good. 1400m, off last start, should suit. But she is becoming a perennial placegetter.
Race 9. (18:01) North Shore Realty Plate (Class 6) 1600m
I think 8 Gold Ambition (Bet Now: $4.40) will take a power of beating here. This son of Savabeel for the Michael Costa team has really turned the corner since coming to the Gold Coast. Thought he did a great job against the bias last time at Doomben over the mile when getting back and working home well late behind Balius. On the bigger track, he should be better off.
I want to give 9 Zofonic Dancer (Bet Now: $4.60) another chance. He comes through the Balius race from Doomben a fortnight ago and to the eye, I thought he was just plain in defeat, but perhaps the bias was against him and second up off a brilliant return, he was perhaps a touch flat. Be wary of the third up bounce back.
13 Dapper One (Bet Now: $15.00) is on the quick back up for the Les Ross team after racing over this track/distance last Wednesday where she got well off the pace before presenting into clear early on in the straight and finishing off strongly to run a narrow second to Troix Choix. That was her first run in three weeks so there should be room for improvement.
