Racing in Adelaide returns to the course proper at Morphettivlle this Saturday where it is Whylie Handicap Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:16) AAMI Spring Carnival Handicap (70) 1600m
4 Diapason (Bet Now: $2.60) is a mare who I reckon is ticking over quite nicely for Will Clarken. On paper, her Balaklava Cup run doesn’t read great but given the bias that afternoon for those on speed/rail, her run in defeat was very good I thought. Fourth up now, so she should just about be ready to show her best.
The horse on the up is 7 Playfellow (Bet Now: $5.00). Heather Lehmann trains this gelding, who has won his past two at Balaklava over the mile, the latest being last Wednesday on Cup Day when beating the above average Nistaan. Yet to be tested in town but given the way he’s going, I think he has to be respected.
2 Rikibobby (Bet Now: $8.50) perhaps looks the touch of overs. Peter Hardacre trains this gelding at Mount Gambier and he’s in near career best form at the moment. Lumped 62kg at Mildura last start over 1400m and despite that impost finished best in a driving go. Run prior behind Declarationofheart at Sandown was good and that does read well for this.
Race 2. (13:51) Table & Chair Maiden Plate 1100m
7 Bayou (Bet Now: $4.20) hasn’t raced for over seven weeks for the Richard Jolly since racing over 1200m here at the midweeks where he ran a narrow second to Flop, getting grabbed right on the peg. That horse has won again since, so the form reads well, and his trial win here last Thursday looked very good to the eye.
13 Sword Of Mercy (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Darren Weir trained filly who has been quite in recent times in a couple of strong maidens at Victoria, the latest at Geelong over 1300m when third to Menina. Large field here, but in terms of the race brigade, she does have the strongest form. Back to 1100m the only concern.
Happy to take a chance on 2 Lippsy Shuffle (Bet Now: $18.00), a son of Master Of Design who debuts for the Stuart Gower stable. He has only had the one public trial, which came last Thursday here and despite being hard ridden, he did close off and was really good when a closing third to Aigulette. Stable don’t mind throwing up one for a first up win. He’ll be an interesting yard/market watch.
Race 3. (14:26) Fleurieu Milk Company Handicap (70) 2000m
8 Circuleight (Bet Now: $3.80) looks a really progressive mare and is of course in the right stable with D Weir training. Daughter of Sebring who was confidently supported when racing over 1800m at Casterton where she got well off the pace in a truly run affair and despite taking a little while to wind up, loved the way she closed off to win. Think the 2000m will be no issue and always have to respect the stable.
2 Star Patriot (Bet Now: $2.50) is a ripping mare for Travis Doudle who rarely runs a bad race. Ran over the mile here a fortnight back and despite some help with the bias, it was a lovely steer from Kayla Crowther by saving ground nearer the inside which won the race. 2000m is the query, but she’s a mare in form.
10 Walloon Region (Bet Now: $11.00) would just about win this if he brought his best form. On the quick back up after racing over 1950m on the Parks track last Saturday where he was near the speed throughout and tried hard but didn’t have the killer finale behind Dollar Dollar Bill. Better suited here I think on the bigger track and senior jock takes over.
Race 4. (15:01) Dominant Handicap (64) 1100m
I think 8 Columbia (Bet Now: $8.00) is a really good gamble. Formerly with the Maher/Eustance stable but is now with Will Clarken, and once again, I’ll say that this bloke is one of the best at improving tried horses. He looks a happy horse if the trial is any guide. Loved the way he closed off under no pressure behind a Group l performer in Mica Lil. If he’s right, I think he wins.
1 Domination (Bet Now: $1.95) is a deserved favourite, but near even money is absolutely rock bottom for mine. He bolted up last Wednesday on Balaklava Cup Day but on the flip side, he got a pretty cheap first couple of furlongs and really dashed when clicked up by Jamie Kah, and was helped by the on speed bias. He can win, clear threat…can’t back him at the odds.
3 Wrapsody (Bet Now: $26.00) would go close to winning this if she brought her best form. Couple of weeks between runs since racing over this track/distance where she got back in a slowly run affair and couldn’t come on at all behind Fancy Rumble. The two runs prior were very good so with a more genuine tempo here, she can bounce back.
Race 5. (15:41) Sky ATA Trainers Trust Handicap (70) 1200m
4 Moghul Empire (Bet Now: $5.00) is an absolute beauty for the Will Clarken team who could easily measure up in Melbourne during the Spring if placed right. Really tough resumption when winning on the course proper before racing over 1400m on the Parks track where he tried hard but just failed to hold off the above average Tan Tat Trusting. Third up, he should be ready fitness wise.
11 Extreme Thrill (Bet Now: $6.00) is racing so well for the Francis/Kent stable but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where he had to drift back to get three/four wide cover in a slowly run race and in the end, did a huge job in defeat behind Just Kappy. He’s flying. Deserves a win.
10 Bris Vegas (Bet Now: $14.00) is a son of Ilovethiscity for Ryan Balfour who is on the seven day back up after racing on the Parks track last Saturday where he did a bit of work from the tricky draw but despite that, he stuck on pretty well in defeat I thought behind Vieira. Callow jumps on, should get three wide cover and is hard fit.
Race 6. (16:21) Tokyo City Cup 1800m
3 Yogi (Bet Now: $3.80) is absolutely flying for Darren Weir. His two runs back from a spell have simply been outstanding. Barnstorming resumption behind Plein Ciel here before racing at the Valley where he got a mile back and worked home with real purpose late behind Trap For Fools. Third up, he should be at peak fitness and ready to go.
I want to give 7 Danon Liberty (Bet Now: $6.00) another chance. Had excuses when he flopped first up in the PB Lawrence before going to the Penny Edition over 1400m on the Parks track where he got well off the pace but was much better when closing off to finish fifth to stablemate Theanswermyfriend. Up to 1800m looks ideal and looks to have a stack of upside.
5 Brown Ben (Bet Now: $16.00) could be a sleeper at odds. He ran in the Balaklava Cup last Wednesday and he was one of two luckless runs in the race behind the leading bunch. Won this race last year, albeit in a much easier edition than what he faces here. Not sure he’s going as well this year, but off last start, has to be included.
Race 7. (17:01) W H Whylie Handicap 1100m
Going with 6 Demerara (Bet Now: $2.90), who is an absolute beauty for James Cummings. She hasn’t raced since the Scone Carnival where she just got a mile back in a very negative ride, the race eventually being won by In Good Time. Warwick Farm trial a couple of weeks back was very good and she is 3/3 fresh. Definitely one of the hardest to beat.
3 Desert Lashes (Bet Now: $6.00) is a ripping mare for the Shayne Cahill stable who was well supported when resuming on Balaklava Cup Day last Wednesday where I thought she was home after leading, which was the spot to be, but the bob of the head just didn’t quite go her way and Showpero got the verdict. She’ll be on speed giving her all.
18 Nariko (Bet Now: $31.00) is a daughter of Hinchinbrook for the Mick Price stable who comes here with a couple of wins under the belt. Surged hard to win two back at Moe before going to Sandown where she was well backed and under a lovely steer from Zac Spain, she proved too good. Harder here but confident she runs well.
Race 8. (17:41) Hughes Limousines Handicap (75) 1200m
I’ll give 4 Freehearted (Bet Now: $2.50) another chance. Was all over when she raced over 1100m here a fortnight back but after a tardy beginning, her fate was sealed but despite a moderate tempo, she made up a stack of ground behind Fancy Rumble. If we get a more genuine tempo this time around, I’m confident she can bounce back.
10 Atlantica (Bet Now: $7.00) is a daughter of Barbados resuming for the Jim Smith stable. She is a really speedy customer who hasn’t raced since Mid July at Caulfield where she attempted to lead all the way and gave a decent enough kick when third to Magnesium Rose. Sharp trial win here last week and is 2/3 when produced fresh.
13 Kissing Game (Bet Now: $8.00) is a mare formerly trained in Sydney by John Thompson but is now with Ryan Balfour. This mare hasn’t raced since August 16 at Newcastle where she was okay in defeat behind a progressive filly in Sunreel. Good fresh horse and her best form in Sydney would see her go close here.
