Group l racing for the 2018/19 season wraps up at Eagle Farm this Saturday with the Tatts Tiara (1400m) headlining a strong nine race program. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:10) Singapore Airlines Handicap (75) 1000m
With an absolute stack of speed engaged here, hoping that 11 Lifesaver (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) can sit off it and finish best. Matty Dunn trains this gelding, who was well backed when resuming in a Highway at Randwick and under a lovely steer from Josh Parr, he got the job done. I’m hoping the stable have figured out the key to him which is fresh legs and keeping him to sprint trips on dry ground, which is the set up he’ll get here.
7 I’ve Gotta Nel (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) is on the seven back up for the Barry Lockwood stable after racing at Ipswich where he had to burn plenty of petrol to find the lead and kicked strongly but couldn’t quite finish it off when fifth to the inform Smartypy. Like him back to 1000m and he has the early toe to take care of the wide barrier. Just depends how he’s done since last weekend.
12 Hirtshals (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is a Brian Smith trained mare who has had six weeks off since her last run, which came at Doomben, where she was on a strong speed and folded up late behind River Racer, who has run well a few times since. Fresh is best for this girl and with the good draw, she can sit just off the good speed and be dangerous late if she’s forward enough.
Race 2. (11:45) Winning Edge Presentation Stakes 1400m
Was really taken by the debut win of 4 Big Parade (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) at Taree over 1250m. He was well supported and under Corey Brown, he took care of the wide gate shortly after jumping and from there, it was a painless watch if you were on. Won easily, ran good time relative to the day and did it with seemingly more in hand. Not the strongest Listed race going around and off the debut win, 1400m is no issue.
2 Kordia (Bet Now: $3.30 TOP ODDS) is a son of Epaulette for James Cummings who has done nothing wrong in two career outings. Just missed out on the win on debut behind Discharged before getting the box seat sit next time out and once the inside split came, he surged and was too good. Had a tick over trial since and that looked encouraging. Stable rarely gets it wrong when targeting these juvenile races.
8 Devine Factor (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS) is still a maiden for Michael Costa but she is talented. Has had two runs back from a spell, both at the Sunny Coast. First up ran third to Jeweliana, who won last Saturday at Ipswich. She then stepped up to 1200m when ridden upside down on speed and weakened out late. Think she’s far better when ridden a touch cold to attack the line late. If that happens, she can win.
Race 3. (12:20) Battle Of The Bush 1200m
The idea of the race is good, but surely race replays have to be a click away instead of having to rely on the concluding stages of the races on Sky Racing’s ‘The Playbook’. Looked at most of the Qualifiers and the one that stood out was 12 Hanover Square (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS), who used to be trained by Team Snowden but Bevan Johnson at Miles has done a really good job with him. Like his finale in the Charleville heat behind Malibu Affair before being close at Goondiwindi. Then went to Barcaldine when on speed and proving too good. I’ll be in his corner.
1 Fab’s Cowboy (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is the class runner of the field and how about his record, winning 30 races from 65 starts. Unbelievable effort. He got his way here via a win in the Cunnamulla heat when charging home from off the speed to win impressively. Has since run a close second at Goondiwindi so he’s in form and is a proven weight carrier. Hard to beat.
10 Malibu Affair (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) is a Craig Smith trained son of Smart Missile that got his way into the final off the back of a tough on speed win at Charleville. He was there to be run down but found plenty when asked late and clung on to win. Hasn’t raced since then, but stable have done well when coming to town in the past and this bloke does race well with fresh legs.
Race 4. (12:55) Stella Artois Plate 1400m
2 Cyber Attack (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) for me. Tony Pike trains this three year old, who was an impressive winner over 1200m at Te Rapa before being sent to Brisbane where he ran in the Daybreak Lover and had no luck at all in the straight behind Signore Fox and you could make a case he should have been in the finish. Up to 1400m looks ideal and should improve with the run under the belt.
7 Malahide (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Shamus Award for Michael Costa that was very well specked in the Daybreak Lover and the plunge almost came off, but she just found one better in Signore Fox but her run in defeat was very good. Just a slight query at the 1400m, but the way she’s returned, she should be fine at the trip and does have the form on the board.
6 Plumaro (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is a talented filly for Kevin Kemp who finished best to win first up at the Sunny Coast over 1000m before going to the Daybreak Lover where she got back in the run and couldn’t really come on behind Signore Fox. Think this is a drop in depth for this filly and 1400m on a big track has been her ideal recipe for success, so keen to see how she goes.
Race 5. (13:35) Stav, Abby & Matt Plate (Class 6) 1400m
13 Sofie’s Gold Class (Bet Now: $6.50) is absolutely flying at the moment for the Debbie Newham stable. Brilliant first up winner over 1200m at Eagle Farm before stepping up to 1400m where she was very good late when fourth to the in form Lockwood runer Cruze. Remaining at 1400m is a little query because I’d love to see her at the mile and perhaps a bit further, but I think she’s flying.
Back to Class 6 grade should suit the Kelly Schweida trained 9 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $5.00). Was very good in defeat two back in the BRC Sprint behind Tyzone before going to the Spear Chief when down the track behind Redouble. I think Stakes grade is just a length or two far away for him so really like him back to this level and is one of the hardest to beat for sure.
8 Magnufighter (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Gary Duncan trained gelding who resumed without a trial over 1400m at Eagle Farm a few weeks ago where I thought Jamie Kah gave the four year old every chance and he tried hard. Just ran out of puff late when fourth to Cruze, beaten just over a length. Think he’ll take really good improvement from that and is a leading chance here for sure.
Race 6. (14:15) Tatts Cup 3000m
The Brisbane Cup has to be the form reference for this and I think the step up in trip will really suit 5 Miss Admiration (Bet Now: $6.50). She doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates but what we do know of her is that she’s a pure stayer that will have no issue at all with the trip and I liked the way she found the line in the Brisbane Cup behind Sixties Groove. She’ll do me here.
1 Big Duke (Bet Now: $4.60) hasn’t won in a while but getting to a bigger track saw him produce some positive form when third in the Brisbane Cup. Was held up for a stride or two but for the most part, I thought he had his chance. He’d be a near good thing if the track was heavy, but that won’t be the case and as I said, hasn’t won in a little while and being asked to carry topweight won’t be an easy task, but has class.
8 Etah James (Bet Now: $23.00) is the interesting runner. Matt Cumani trains this girl who finished down the track behind Shraaoh on Cup Day in the Spring before being sent to NZ for a prep where she found form last start on a bog at Ellerslie over 2200m when a narrow second. Dry track is the key to her and off her previous form in Victoria, I don’t think 3000m will be an issue.
Race 7. (14:55) GH Mumm 1820m
I like 8 Live And Free (Bet Now: $4.00) slightly back in trip. This John O’Shea trained gelding was a horse I was really keen on when racing at Caulfield three weeks ago over 2000m but he had his chance when second to Pacodali. Perhaps 2000m sees him right out, so back to 1800m and down on the minimum, he’s certainly got the ability to win, but is getting close to D-Day.
1 Duca Valentinois (Bet Now: $7.00) is a James Cummings trained gelding who comes through the Wayne Wilson and I thought Tim Clark gave him a 12/10 steer. He gave it every possible to win and was there to win, but Vinland was too tough in the end. I think as he’s getting older, the mile sees him right out, so a little query at 1800m, but he’s in form now and in the right stable.
The jury was out on whether or not 2 Cellarman (Bet Now: $16.00) had come back any good but he found some positive form in the Wayne Wilson when sitting off the speed and finding the line well to run fourth, beaten a couple of lengths. He is the sort of horse that once he finds form, he does tend to maintain it for a period of time, and up to 1800m, he’s a winning chance.
Race 8. (15:35) Tatts Tiara 1400m
Hard to get away from the James Cummings trained 10 Savatiano (Bet Now: $6.00). She had the beaut sit just off the speed in the Glenlogan Park a few weeks ago over 1300m here and when clicked up by J Mac, she put them away quickly and raced clear to spank her rivals. She had been bursting to win a blacktype race for a while and now her confidence is up, she can go right on on with it, especially off a very sharp trial win.
18 Pohutukawa (Bet Now: $5.00) is likeable here. James Cummings trains this filly, who comes through the Queensland Guineas and I think Stevie Wonder could see she should have won. Just got shoved back into a pocket by McDonald on Kolding and that sealed her fate. Don’t see back to 1400m an issue given the tempo will likely be strong and Shinn remains on.
I did think the $17/$5 for 9 Egg Tart (Bet Now: $16.00) was clear overs so hoping I’m right. Very interesting that Chris Waller has gone down this path with her. Could have went to the Hollindale/Doomben Cup path like last year but tipped her out after the Ranvet and comes here against the mares first up. Trial win was very sharp and there was real intent, a complete opposite from how she’s previously trialled. First up last prep, four lengths off Winx. First up prep prior, arguably wins the Tramway with luck and first up run in the prep prior, should have won the Liverpool Cup, and prep before fresh, she ran a great second to Deploy in track record time. Fresh is best for her, and with a bit of rain forecast, I think she’s clear overs.
Race 9. (16:15) Healy Stakes 1200m
Best on the program here for me in the shape of 3 Brave Song (Bet Now: $3.60). The Snowden camp has him flying and he FINALLY gets to Eagle Farm. The tight Doomben track beat him last start in the Moreton Cup. Just looked drunk on the turn, lost momentum, had to balance up again and did, surging hard to just miss out on beating Pretty In Pink. Bigger track, good speed, he can launch late and I’m really keen on him.
Huge fan of 2 Victorem (Bet Now: $3.40) and filthy I jumped off him in the Hinkler two weeks ago. He appreciated a very fast speed and once Ben Looker gave him a slap down the right side, he changed gears and produced outstanding late splits to get the job done. Creeping back up in the weights now and that was the excuse for his Kingsford Smith run so with potential egg on my face, can’t have him on top but concede he’s a massive threat.
Up to 1200m will suit the Mark Currie trained 7 Amanaat (Bet Now: $11.00). Put the name/family aside for a moment. It’s a remarkable comeback for this horse because after the last run last prep, his jaw was shattered and it was touch and go whether he would survive. Nursed back to full health, resumed in the Lightning and his run was a beauty from the back behind Plague Stone. Bigger track and 1200m, he’s likeable.
