Race 1. (12:30) Drinkwise Kirkham Plate 1000m
Tricky juvenile race. Landed with 3 Gitalong (Bet Now: $8.00). Zoustar colt for Team Hawkes that debuts off the back of two trials, the latest being at Hawkesbury on Monday where he led and looked to go about his business quite nicely, run down late. He looks a new/raw colt and Pike rode in the first trial, so he knows what he’s dealing with.
8 Dipsy Doodle (Bet Now: $6.00) is a very interesting runner. James Cummings trains this girl and I thought her recent Poly trial at Warwick Farm was outstanding. She trucked out the back after jumping well, snagged back and worked home under no real pressure. If she handles wet ground, she’s hard to beat.
10 Infatuation (Bet Now: $7.00) is a daughter of I Am Invincible for Bjorn Baker that is on debut. Her lone piece of work came last week in a Wyong trial when winning her trial and seemingly went well to the eye. Is bred to handle wet ground and stable is absolutely flying at the moment.
Race 2. (13:05) Tab Highway Hcp (C3) 1800m
Surely it’s time for 3 Jalmari (Bet Now: $4.20) to get a long overdue win. He is flying this horse but has such an awful racing pattern. He was zero chance the way the track played two weeks ago but loved the way he closed off when third to Socrates. If he is able to sit closer in the run, I think good luck beating him…which is bold to say when it comes to this enigma.
4 Socrates (Bet Now: $4.80) commands respect. Yes, the pattern was in his corner last time out here, but even allowing for that, gee he was dominant and made a mess of them from the front. He’s got a good racing style and back up in trip, he’ll jump on the bunny and prove hard to run down.
Pat Murphy has done a good job with his team and he has 10 Enjolras (Bet Now: $26.00) going really well at the moment. Had specking at a price in the Highway a fortnight back and yes, comfortably held by Socrates, but I didn’t mind the way he found the line. If he can settle a pair closer in the run, he’s dangerous.
Race 3. (13:40) Midway (Bm72) 1200m
9 Russbuss (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented mare that I think can measure up. Narrow second to Ten Bells two back at the midweeks at Canterbury before going to Kembla last week where she tried to throw the race away by wandering about under pressure but she had panels on them. Proven in town, keen on her running well.
4 Mayrose (Bet Now: $8.50) is capable with her best. Track pattern and race shape was against her behind Kote, sitting back and failing to come on, but she clearly had excuses. Luckless the start prior, I think she’s flying, knocking on the door to win one and gets a great chance here.
2 Astero (Bet Now: $10.00) creates interest. Matty Smith trained gelding that resumes, having not raced since the Scone Carnival back in May when on speed and battled away pretty well in defeat behind Redoute’s Image. He is a horse who can sprint well fresh and his trial work has been encouraging.
Race 4. (14:15) Egroup Protective Serv. (Bm78) 1600m
8 Mahagoni (Bet Now: $3.60) is a nice horse for David Payne. Got a confidence boost two back with an arrogant win in the Midway. He then went to an 88 here three weeks ago and was good from the back behind Hosier, the likely Big Dance winner IMO. Back to 78 grade and the depth, as a whole, isn’t strong, so he’s the one to beat.
3 O’Mudgee (Bet Now: $13.00) is three weeks between runs for Bjorn Baker since racing at this track/distance where he was just behind the speed in a slowly run affair and battled on really well in defeat behind Hosier, who got the lead with ease and was too good. Stable flying, he commands respect.
9 One Aye (Bet Now: $14.00) is sneaky flying for the Joseph/Jones camp. She has eyes on The Big Dance and kicked off this prep in The Nivison here two weeks back where she was very good against the pattern behind dominant winner Sky Command, who had the bias in her corner. Fitter and up to the mile, I reckon One Aye is in with a big shout.
Race 5. (14:50) Vale Beryl White Filante Hcp 1600m
8 War Eternal (Bet Now: $5.00) on top for me in an even race. Bjorn Baker trained four year old that is a few weeks between runs since contesting the Epsom where he was outclassed but far from disgraced in defeat behind Ellsberg/Top Ranked. Drops miles in depth, Blinkers on, remains down in the weights…he’s the pony for me.
4 Diamil (Bet Now: $4.20) is on the seven day back up for John O’Shea after contesting the Five Diamonds Prelude last Saturday where he was back in a barrier trial essentially, and just couldn’t get involved behind Ellsberg, who had total control in front. On the back up, he swims and finds a very winnable race.
Fitter and up to the mile are two big ticks for 3 Criaderas (Bet Now: $19.00). He resumed in the Sandown Stakes where he was back near last in the run and didn’t fire a shot behind Gentleman Roy. Has since returned to Sydney and the trial last week wasn’t too bad. His best, absolute best, can see him win…perhaps just one more run, but a first four contender.
Race 6. (15:25) Brian Crowley Stakes 1200m
1 Thron Bone (Bet Now: $6.50) is a quality animal for Jerome Hunter that resumes. He hasn’t raced since the Vain in the early part of the Melbourne Spring behind Giga Kick, who of course is The Everest winner, which is the best sprinting form in the world. He swims, maps ideally…hard to beat.
2 Kote (Bet Now: $2.60) is a horse with good talent for Anthony Cummings. Not sure what to make of the Midway win. To the eye, he was impressive, but he was fence in run, in front, and was $1.01 after 200m. It was a pretty thin Midway and he does face good opposition here. Think he can measure up, but wait til jump time and I think you’ll get max price.
8 Miss Hellfire (Bet Now: $12.00) can bounce back. She was tested as a potential Thousand Guineas candidate but failed badly on a bottomless Caulfield deck in the Prelude. Been freshened up, returned to Sydney and her recent trial was a good piece of work. Best is good enough.
Race 7. (16:10) Callander-Presnell Stakes 1600m
I think you have to believe what you saw with 10 A Lot More Love (Bet Now: $9.00) and her win last Saturday. Blinkers went on, she had the suck run…just a matter of egtting clear air and once she did, she exploded and was dominant. Seven day back up and I don’t see the mile being an issue at all. Happy to be in her corner.
1 Golden Mile (Bet Now: $1.75) is the Caulfield Guineas winner so with the class factor, he will look the winner for the most part. The Guineas win was very good, but you could argue it was a bit on the lucky side, with a peach from J Mac and unlucky runners in behind helping the cause. Tricky draw, bog track, hard mile…he can win, but I couldn’t back at the shorts.
5 Flag Of Honour (Bet Now: $9.00) is a three year old I have plenty of time for. Was keen on him in the Dulcify last time but he was second up and just lacked the fitness to put them away when fourth to Williamsburg. Was thinking he’d head towards the Spring Champion but instead runs here and gets Blinkers first time.
Race 8. (16:45) Spring Champion Stakes 2000m
Bjorn Baker is no idiot so the seven day back up with 12 Renaissance Woman (Bet Now: $16.00) I find interesting. I am very keen on her for the Oaks, and I do prefer her running here and not the Wakeful. Dominant win in the Ethereal last Saturday, she has the 2000m run under the belt and will be strong late.
It’s all upside for me with 3 Sharp N Smart (Bet Now: $7.00). Kiwi raider that was a strong winner of the Gloaming last Wednesday. Matcha Latte had him cold but credit to him, he fought back strongly and got the win. He was only second up off a several week break, so you’d have to think there is upside, and off that Gloaming win, 2000m is ideal.
11 She’s Extreme (Bet Now: $4.80) is the filly and the different form I am very wary of. She ran in the Flight Stakes and stuck to the task very well in defeat when second to a star filly, Zougotcha. Her two 1600m career runs have told me she’d be fine over further, and if that Gloaming/Dulcify form is cast, she’s the one.
Race 9. (17:30) The Invitation 1400m
2 Nimalee (Bet Now: $7.00) looks to be one of the hardest to beat. Tough winner of the Golden Pendant before going to the Epsom a week later and she was brave on speed after doing work when fifth to Ellsberg/Top Ranked. Back to 1400m no issue and she brings the A1 form. Hard to beat.
12 Sheeza Belter (Bet Now: $12.00) has the class factor to take this out fresh. Team Snowden trained Group l winning filly that resumes, having not raced since the Brisbane Winter, where she claimed the Sires/JJ Atkins double.1400m fresh is an ask, especially against the Mares, but she has class.
4 Electric Girl (Bet Now: $16.00) is racing well without winning for Team Hawkes. She is four weeks between runs since contesting the Golden Pendant where she was tucked behind the speed and battled away strongly when close up behind Nimalee. She does tend to race well on the fresh side…just doesn’t want the track to be too bad.
Race 10. (18:10) Catanach's Jewellers (Bm88) 1200m
4 Coal Crusher (Bet Now: $6.50) is a big improver here. He was kept quite safe in betting when resuming at this track/distance three weeks ago when doing work on speed from the wide gate and being first up, the run just told mate behind Remarque. Good improvement from that, he appeals big time, especially if he dominates from the front.
5 Bacchanalia (Bet Now: $3.20) is geting close to D-Day. He’s had two runs back from a break. Just a run fresh behind Remarque before racing against that horse three weeks ago here where J Mac gave him every possible but he was just fair late when second. Third up, hard fit and D-Day.
3 Acquitted (Bet Now: $7.50) is such an interesting runner. Kris Lees trained gelding that hasn’t raced since mid May at Eagle Farm where despite being in an 85, he produced one of the more impressive wins of the Winter Carnival, sitting back before being presented clear air and he went through his gears like a Stakes class horse. I think he’ll reach that level with time and his trial was a good piece of work. Keen to see how he goes.
