SA metro racing this Saturday heads to Gawler. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres from the 800m-400m; Out two metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:52) Coopers Brewery Plate 1100m
I found this a very tricky juvenile race with no real standouts from the trials/jumpouts. Leaning towards 5 In The Navy (Bet Now: $2.15) for the Stokes camp. She’s had several trials/jumpouts across a couple of preps in readiness for her debut so she’s had a good enough grounding and both stable as well as rider are in form.
4 Forager (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Team McEvoy filly on debut. This girl trialled at Strathlabyn on December 30 when running a narrow second. She did a bit wrong when placed under pressure but responded well enough I thought. Vorster rides and he is the form rider in SA at the moment.
2 Free Vino (Bet Now: $12.00) is a son of Free Eagle on debut for the Richards/Moyle camp. He’s had a couple of jumpouts to get ready for start one, the latest being last week at Morphettville when running third and looked to go about his business quite nicely. Market will be your guide as to whether he’s ready or not.
Race 2. (13:27) 4 Way Fresh Produce Handicap (72) 1100m
Looks to be a stack of speed engaged here and I think that set up is perfect for 4 Modear (Bet Now: $4.40), who formally joins Matty Seyers after formerly being with Patrick Payne. Worked to the line strongly three weeks ago at Murray Bridge behind Heka Express, who ran well last Saturday, so the form reads well, but she should get her chance here to sit off a fast speed and launch late.
3 Fighting McLaren (Bet Now: $3.20) has done little wrong in his seven start career. I thought it was a peach on speed steer from Stubby to win on him here a fortnight back, sitting outside the leader, controlling the tempo and he was just too good. He’ll park off the speed and be strong at the end.
Back to a track/distance that suits his racing pattern, 6 Little Rich Boy (Bet Now: $19.00) is a knockout hope if the track is playing towards those on speed/fence. 1200m at Murray Bridge with his jump/run style didn’t suit him last Saturday so want to be forgiving. Prior efforts weren’t too bad for a race like this.
Race 3. (14:02) Members Of Bung Fritz Society Handicap (68) 1200m
3 Lady Simone (Bet Now: $2.20) has returned in super order and it seems somewhat fresh legs is the key to her. two runs this time in, both coming here, first up over 1100m when a luckless fourth before bolting up over 1200m a few weeks ago. Seems to have a liking for this track and is hard to beat.
1 Lady Dunmore (Bet Now: $3.40) comes here with fresh legs for Phillip Stokes, having not raced since December 11 at Morphettville when a close up third to the then in form Kayseri, beaten two lengths after sitting wide no cover. Off a let up like that, the market will be the guide as to whether she’s ready or not.
6 Lady Pavli Chenko (Bet Now: $11.00) can run an improved race with luck in running. She didn’t get that when racing here two weeks back, sitting wide from the gate and couldn’t finish it off in a forgive run. If she gets better luck this time around, her best is good enough to be dangerous.
Race 4. (14:37) Adelaide Star Bus Maiden Plate 1100m
I’m quite keen on 3 Kolokar (Bet Now: $4.60) running well here on debut. Team Jolly trained gelding that has had two jumpouts and a trial to get ready for start one. I was taken by his trial at Strathalbyn. He was beaten nearly five lengths, but he looked to be going half paced, seemingly with plenty in hand. Toeroek rode in the trial and no shock that he sticks.
12 Redwinelover (Bet Now: $5.50) is having her first run for Nicole Irwin after formerly being with Travis Doudle. Ran here two weeks ago when on speed and fought on pretty well when second to a very impressive So Bene, and I think that form will be quite strong. Back to 1100m I like and has the early speed to take care of the gate.
4 Prince Jofra (Bet Now: $6.50) won that Strathalbyn trial mentioned above that Kolokar contested. He then resumed in the Gawler maiden mentioned above won by So Bene and liked the way he finished his race off when third despite never being a threat. Back to 1100m I find interesting but should be strong at the end.
Race 5. (15:12) 2022 Bung Fritz Cup (68) 2100m
Generally speaking with 8 Ammo Loco (Bet Now: $11.00), once he finds winning form, he generally holds it. It was an ordinary race he won at Oakbank last Wednesday but the manner in which he spanked them and showed change up speed in the straight was impressive. Three of his five career wins have come at Gawler and this is a very winnable race.
5 Victory Bandit (Bet Now: $3.50) is two weeks between runs for Team Jaensch since winning at this track/distance where she sat off a good speed, a silly speed really, which set it up for her and Flow Meter, with the mare getting the win. Flow Meter ran well last Sunday, so the form is okay and she has a liking for this track.
6 Caliburn (Bet Now: $7.50) deserves another chance. Market gravitated towards him two weeks back here but he was part of the silly early speed battle for the front and the three that went forward were the three that dropped out of the finish, so want to be forgiving. Prior form suggested a win was near.
Race 6. (15:52) Dare & Johnson Handicap (68) 1200m
6 Cool Magnum (Bet Now: $4.00) for me. He ran over 1100m here two weeks ago and I thought he closed off his race quite well when a narrow second to a handy horse in Ultimate Victory. Up to 1200m is ideal and if the significant rain forecast for Saturday is correct, then it’s a big tick for him.
1 Secret War (Bet Now: $3.40) loves racing at Gawler. Just the last little bit will test, especially if there is juice in the track. He looked home when racing here a fortnight back but wanted to drift about under pressure and got the staggers to run third. If the track is dynamite on speed, he’s the one to beat.
5 Gutsy (Bet Now: $7.50) is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday at Murray Bridge where the track was quite shifty and not sure he was entirely happy in the conditions when down the track behind Lianne. Prior form was sound and this isn’t the strongest race going around.
Race 7. (16:32) Ultra Tune/Kingsford Hotel Handicap (76) 1500m
6 Spectacle (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Team McEvoy trained mare that has been in work a little while but is holding her form very nicely. Narrow fourth two back behind Picaroon over the mile before coming back to 1400m at Murray Bridge three weeks ago where she was given a peach by Vorster and in a driving go, clung on in a deceptive finish. Think with a more conservative steer, she’ll be more effective.
1 Fulton Street (Bet Now: $4.80) is an absolute beauty for David Jolly. Puts himself on speed, rolls along and gives them something to chase. He was there to be beaten when racing at Morphettville on Boxing Day but he was just too tough and too good for them. Harder here, but he’s so tough and genuine. Hard to ignore.
3 Smiling Assassin (Bet Now: $101.00) is better suited over much further but he has a good record at the track, he can pull out a decent run and this is a winnable race. He hasn’t raced since Melbourne Cup Day when down the track in a 2500m final at Morphettville, but he was looking for the paddock. Quiet trial to get ready, not sure he wins, but I can see him working to the line and sneaking a first four spot.
Race 8. (17:12) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (60) 1500m
10 Montign (Bet Now: $3.00) doesn’t have the best of racing patterns but really, it’s not a concern if you can overcome it, and he did to win here two weeks ago, unleashing a brilliant finale from near last to nail Tully’s Gold right on the post under a very much in form Barend Vorster. Hard to beat.
9 Frankel Star (Bet Now: $9.50) is knocking on the door to win. I liked him here a fortnight back but unfortunately he got caught wide no cover for the trip. To his credit, he fought on quite bravely when a close up fourth to Montign. He is a horse who races best with a sit and cover, so hopefully that can eventuate for him here.
4 Getouttheway (Bet Now: $6.00) tends to save his best for Gawler so he has to be respected here. Market wanted him when he raced here two weeks back. Sat in the second half of the field and worked to the line well, but thought he had his chance behind Montign. His record at the track keeps him in the mix.
Race 9. (17:52) Thank You Nathan Pettit Handicap (60) 1100m
I’d love a market push for 3 Magic Phantom (Bet Now: $4.20), who resumes for Jon O’Connor. He’s a two time winner at the track, he is an absolute swimmer, and in another stride, he wins first up last prep in what has turned out to be a red hot form race. I think he’s a great gamble here in a thin race.
1 Tanja’s Dream (Bet Now: $2.80) looks hard to beat but gee he’s on the short side. Hasn’t raced for three weeks and joins Grant Kluske after formerly being with Travis Doudle. Ran on New Years Day at Murray Bridge when four wide on speed and dropping out to run last. If she crosses and leads, then she probably wins, but odds on is too short.
4 Mysticano (Bet Now: $8.00) loves Gawler and loves getting his toe in so he will want the rain to come on Saturday. He comes through the Ultimate Victory race where he was wide and doing work but stuck to the task pretty well when a close up fourth. Certainly in the mix with the rain forecast.
