If the forecast is right, then it appears that another feature race day at Randwick will be run on a wet surface. Nonetheless, it should be a superb days racing, with nine blacktype races, as well as four group ones, plus the juveniles step out in the Gimcrack and Breeders Plate.
Race One: Very hard to be confident when betting in the Gimcrack and Breeders Place. Well this is the Gimcrack and from what I’ve seen in the trials, Kyria is on top for me. Won her trial unextended for Grahame Begg and Brenton Avdulla over 900m in smart time. Drawn barrier three, she’ll get the lovely run and prove hard to beat. Dear Demi, who finished second to Kyria, is a danger, as well as Hussousa and My Shabella.
Race Two: Forget looked sharp in it’s barrier trial behind Spirit Of Speed over 900m in 55 seconds, which was one of the quickest times for the morning. Bred in the purple being by Exceed And Excel out of the classy mare in Mnemosyne. If he produces some of the ability that his mum had, he’ll go close to winning. Spirit Of Speed can’t be ruled, nor can Chronicle and Wazeer.
Race Three: What a cracking bunch of three year olds set to line up here. I think the one to back is Masthead. Fourth in the Golden Slipper, this bloke resumed at Flemington in the Danehill and wasn’t disgraced behind Sepoy. He was the eye catcher and no doubt he’ll be better around a bending track. He’ll control the race and I just think he is the toughest horse in the race. I expect it to be a tight finish and when it comes down to the nitty and gritty, Masthead will be superior. Foxwedge, Aeronautical and Do You Think round out the first four for me.
Race Four: Big fan of Lucha Libre. Resuming after a 168 day spell. Toyed with them on debut at Wyong before being thrown in the deep end to contest the South Pacific Classic and holding on to win in a tight finish. Last trial was superb and she handles the wet. She should get the drag behind Winter King and Neeson and hopefully Macca gets her home. Dangers are Danleigh, Love Conquers All and Albert The Fat.
Race Five: If you want a good thing, it’s here in My Kingdom Of Fife. Ran a slashing second to Trusting when resuming in the Chelmsford Stakes. He has since trialled and did that in great style. He is a horse to follow as he heads towards the Cox Plate. He’ll be winning here, just get the best price possible. Dangers, if any, are Syreon, Shootoff and Older Than Time.
Race Six: Strike The Stars is the best staying three year old in Sydney and with normal luck, he should be winning here. Ran third behind Trusting and My Kingdom Of Fife before he blizted them in the Gloaming. Extra 200m is the big plus, as is the spacious Randwick track. $2.90 with TAB Sportsbet…take it. Darci Be Good is talented who will keep on keeping on, Rekindled Alliance has the talent, but 2000m is a slight concern and the unknown is Godspeed. He has ability, but a group one might be too soon for him. Wait until the Autumn for him.
Race Seven: I think Gai will win, but which one? All week I have said More Strawberries and I will have something on her, but I keep looking at Light Brigade and his run in the Cameron and I just think he is going to improve out of sight. He is on the limit, back home, Froggy riding is a huge bonus as does tend to hang out so the left handed rider is a good tactic and the old saying is that you need a 2000m to win over the Randwick mile. This horse fits that equation. Dangers are More Strawberries, as well as Sacred Choice and Pinnacles.
Race Eight: Someone has to take on Streama, otherwise she’ll be handed another race again. I think the kiwi Dowager Queen looks a bit of value at $11. Forget she went around last start. She was well back in a race which I said was handed to Streama. She’ll settle back again but I think the surroundings of Randwick will assist her. Her form in New Zealand suggests she appreciates the bigger tracks. If the heavens open up, Dowager Queen is the horse to back. Pane In The Glass, Streama and Roma Giaconda are the main first four players for me.
Race Nine: Very tough race. Just hoping the rain hits and hits hard, because I’ll be on Stand To Gain. He did well when fourth in the Hill Stakes behind Trusting, who he meets 4kg better at the weights here. He isn’t a WFA performer, handicap racing is his go and he gets conditions to suit here His chances rely heavily on the weather. If the rain doesn’t hit as hard as what the forecast predicts, then he is a place chance. If the rain tumbles down, he is right in contention. Trusting, Tullamore and Crafty Irna are the dangers.
BEST BET: Race Five Number 1 My Kingdom Of Fife
NEXT BEST: Race Six Number 2 Strike The Stars
VALUE: Race Eight Number 5 Dowager Queen
