The first race on the 2010 Derby Day card is the Carbine Club Stakes over 1600m for 3YO’s, Skilled has opened as the $2.90 favourite ahead of Mr Chard who is currently at $3.40. Even though there are only 8 runners in the field it looks to be a very competitive race.
Top selection:
Mr Chard is my top selection for race one, he is coming off a win in the Gothick Stakes at Caulfield beating home Skilled, Ace Acosta and Goldstone it looks like conditions will be wet again which will suit and i feel he will be able to beat them home again on Saturday.
Second Selection:
Kookaburras is coming through a different form line than the two favourites although his win at Geelong last start was very impressive and he looks to be a very smart type, has run within 3L of Run For Levi who finished 2nd in the Caulfield Guineas but this looks to be a lot easier. If he improves on or matches his Geelong run he should finish close.
Third Selection:
Skilled gave a very good run last start when finishing 2nd behind Mr Chard, will prefer a dryer track and his 2nd behind Anacheeva holds up really well and if he can run a similar race to that run he should have the class to win this race.
Best Roughie:
Goldstone i thought was a tad unlucky last run in the Gothick Stakes, he didnt seem to handle the Caulfield track but still finished off well. Should suit the 1600m and will be finishing off strong.
