20/1/2024 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Ascot

A nine race meeting has been assembled for Ascot on Saturday. Weather is fine, track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.

7 Wotugot (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks a nice filly for David Harrison. This filly is on debut off the back of some nice trial work, the latest trial being a win over 950m at Lark Hill where she moved well late under light riding and won well. Think she’ll be strong at the end of 1000m and with good speed in front, I think she’ll be hard to hold out.

3 Madhi Girl (Bet Now:  $SP.00) creates interest. Simon Miller trained filly that was met with strong market support when debuting on Northerly Day on Dec 9 but she didn’t really find much when placed under pressure and was quite disappointing at start one behind Define Beautiful. Had trialled up like a bomb prior so I think you have to give her another look.

6 Scary Mary (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a daughter of Snippetson for Jason Pateman that is on debut. This girl has had one trial to get ready, which came over 400m at Lark Hill and it moved pretty well to my eye when second, albeit was somewhat pushed out. Not sure she is good enough to win but for exotics, she can be entertained.

7 Lord Shiva (Bet Now:  $SP.00) to measure up for mine. Adam Durrant trains this son of Playing God, who comes here off a maiden win, which came at Bunbury where he looked a good thing on paper and under a confident steer from CJP, he made a mess of them and was impressive. Good test here, but should find the front, on speed anyway, gets Pike…very likeable.

5 Sapphire Street (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Dan Morton trained filly that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since Sep 2 when down the track at Belmont, looking a tired horse and wanting the paddock. Been given a good break and she seemed to move well in a trial win at Belmont last week, and gets Chris Parnham booked fresh, so watch the market and see what it does.

3 Ginnivan (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and give cheek. He resumed on New Years Day over 1000m here when on speed and giving a strong kick but being first up, he couldn’t quite see it through when a tiring fourth to Angel Undercover. Last bit will test but with his racing pattern, he’ll give himself every chance.

6 Bisector (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. Simon Miller trained mare that ran last Thursday at Pinjarra down the straight when on speed throughout and for the most part, she looked the winner, but couldn’t quite see it through when second to The Lady IS A Vamp. She was a few weeks between runs there so with room for improvement, she’s right in the mix.

3 The Lady Is A Vamp (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is flying for Lou Luciani and is a key threat. This mare has won her past two, the latest coming in the race mentioned above where she was ridden with confidence under Pike and finished best to win and win well. Hasn’t really proven herself on the Saturday metro stage but she gets a great chance here, especially with Pike sticking.

1 Reign Of Fire (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is first up and Colin Webster and he is usually around the mark at this level. He last ran on July 1 when placing behind a quality mare, Miss Vasari. He tends to get better as the prep goes on but if they go silly in front, look for him to be finishing off his race strong.

8 Harmika (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is flying for Adam Durrant and deserves a crack at this level. This mare has won her past and each win has been impressive. Latest of those wins came here two weeks ago at the trip, giving them a start and a beating in an electric performance, clocking great late splits. Harder here, but good speed in front, maps to do no work again…happy to be in her corner.

7 State Of Power (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Simon Miller trained mare that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since August 19 at Belmont when racing on wet ground and just couldn’t quite quicken well enough late in the piece behind Swim Through. She is a mare who can sprint well fresh, has trialled up nicely and Pike booked fresh signals intent.

4 Featherweight (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of Snippetson resuming for Dan Morton. He teased to have a fruitful prep when last in work but couldn’t put it together and for the most part, he was disappointing. He does have a good fresh record who saves his best for Ascot and I loved the way he has trialled to get ready.

2 Atlantis Beach (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for me. I was keen on him when he raced here two weeks ago. He seemingly had every chance under Cliff Green and tried his guts out but with the big weight, he was just bogged down late in the piece when third to I Love Your Smile. He has that run under the belt now, which I think will hold him in good stead.

5 Captain Pluto (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is flying for Team Williams but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Looked like the win would come here a fortnight back but he just couldn’t quite get there when a narrow second to I Love Your Smile. He has that 2200m run now, and this race isn’t much harder. One of the leading chances.

6 Bernbrae (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is one I can entertain for exotics. This mare ran last Wednesday at Belmont where she got back to near last in the run and spotted those in front too much head start but I did like the way she found the line late in the piece. Not sure she has the quality to win but is a must for multiples.

9 Upper Limits (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is getting towards D-Day for mine. Resumed over 1200m here and was a touch unlucky when third to Saloon Bar given he didn’t get clear air until late. He then stepped up to this trip five weeks ago where again, he probably didn’t get the rub of the green when third to Magnificent Andy. The break between runs I find interesting but he is a nice horse with quality.

2 Starry Heights (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to be given another chance. The market was fascinating with him two weeks ago over 1400m here given he was around even money to as short as $1.50, then eased back out big time towards $2.20 come jump time and the late market was spot on as he failed to come on at all in a plain effort behind Let’s Galahvant. He was a month between runs and has credit in the bank so don’t dismiss him.

5 Big Bada Boom (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is five weeks between runs for Roy Rogers since racing over the mile here where he seemed to get into a decent enough spot in transit but didn’t come on and was a bit on the plain side behind Let’sdeal. Not sure I could back him to win but with a positive ride, he could pinch a first four spot.

6 Art Of Sabrage (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks ready to win for Simon Miller. Did more than enough fresh behind Devine Belief at this track/distance before coming back to 1000m on New Years Day when back off the speed and closing off strongly late in the piece behind Brave Venture, finishing second. Hard fit now and back up to 1100m, he rates as the one to beat for mine.

9 Comic Hero (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has shown talent since day one…is this the prep where he goes on with it? He resumed at the midweeks at this track/distance where he sat last before angling into clear air and launched over the top for a big win in a great return. He’s teased to be a Saturday class horse for a while now…can he go on with it?

5 Trevern (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is capable with his best. He resumed over this trip at Bunbury where the market said he had three legs and ran accordingly after getting a decent run in transit from behind the speed, failing to come on behind The Lady Is A Vamp. Has run well in town before and has a good second up record so don’t pen him.

2 Manhattan Strip (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the way I am leaning for Team Pearce. He has steadily come back in trip in recent runs, firstly 1600m back to 1500m, then back to 1400m when racing at Pinjarra last time where he was a real eye catcher from the back behind the very much in form Stormy Tawny. Gets back up to the mile here and despite a tricky gate, he’s the one to beat.

7 Speak To Me (Bet Now:  $SP.00) commands respect for Peter Giadresco. He ran over 1800m here on on New Years Day where he was back in a moderately run race and tried hard to reel in Sab Fabrizio, but that horse had it too good in transit and was able to fend him off and win. Hopefully with a more genuine tempo here, you’ll see a much improved showing.

1 Ciscojoe (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness for Bernie Miller. Both runs this time in have come over 1400m, the latest at Pinjarra where he got back in the run and did make up headway but was never really a threat behind Stormy Tawny. Like him up in trip, getting towards peak fitness and his best is good enough.

2 Metallon (Bet Now:  $SP.00) commands respect for Team Williams. He ran over this track/distance four weeks ago where he got back to near last in the run before slicing his way through the field and drove hard late, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to Cold Shizzle. If he runs up to last start, he’ll go close against these.

9 Without Reg (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to have returned in really good order for Rhys Radford. Market took somewhat of a set against him at the midweeks at Belmont but nobody told the horse that as he gave them a start and a beating in an electric display, producing some of the better late splits of the meeting. He has run well at Ascot previously and I am confident he can measure up.

1 Lorentinio (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is getting on in years but he drops in grade/depth after contesting the Easingworld when near the speed and tried hard but at his age, he just doesn’t have the ping to go with the better ones, finishing down the track behind Let’s Galahvant. Not sure he wins, but at a big price, he is one who could run top four without totally surprising.

NEXT BEST: Race One Number 7 Wotugot

LONG SHOT: Race Four Number 8 Harmika
