Nine races will be run and won at Randwick this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:40) Australian Fire Hose Plate 1000m
8 Estijaab (Bet Now: $3.60) looks a really nice filly for the Hawkes camp. She has had two trials to prepare fro her debut, the first one behind subsequent Stakes winner Meryl before winning her second trial in good style under Avdulla, and when she was pushed out, there was a response. That’s the tick for me and these juvenile first starters.
6 Ligulate (Bet Now: $6.50) is the race fit horse here. Godolphin colt who ran over 1200m here a fortnight back and tried hard but just had no answers for the turn of foot produced by Futooh. I think back to 1000m is the little query, but you have to give enormous respect to these two year olds who have runs under the belt.
10 Premier Rose (Bet Now: $7.50) is a filly on debut for the Waterhouse/Bott team. Wasn’t asked to do much in a Hawkesbury trial before trialling here where she won it in okay time and looked to it quite nicely, not really being pressured in the straight under McDonogh. Trained on the track and 1000m on debut is ideal.
Race 2. (13:20) Nelune Foundation Handicap (76) 1300m
Very keen to see the resumption of 3 D’Argento (Bet Now: $2.35) because I think he could well be a very serious player for the Autumn Carnival. Won two from two to kick off his career in the Winter despite not really having any idea what the caper is about. Dodged the Spring with the main focus being the Autumn. Two trials have been great and he looks forward enough to sprint well fresh at 1300m.
1 Intuition (Bet Now: $6.00) is a James Cummings trained three year old who is doing a really good job this campaign, winning there from three, the latest coming on Boxing Day at Randwick when finding under Tye Angland’s urgings to get the photo in what was a really close finish. Reservations about 1300m, but he’s a hard fit horse in form and should take some beating.
7 Shumookh (Bet Now: $6.00) is a regally bred filly for the Waterhouse/Bott team who landed a little plunge when recording a dominant all the way debut win at Canterbury last Wednesday under a lovely steer from Rachel King, who rated the filly beautifully on speed and kicked hard when required. More depth here, but maps well and does have a turn of foot.
Race 3. (13:55) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1400m
12 Vivid Pink (Bet Now: $9.50) on top in what looks a really strong Highway. This Matty Dunn trained mare has only got the one career win next to her name but she has been racing alongside and behind some quality types, the latest run being at Doomben when fourth to the potential blacktype performer Savwell. I think that reads very well for this.
10 Acquittal (Bet Now: $3.60) is still a maiden for Danny Williams but he is more than up to these. Market said he had no chance when racing in an 1100m Highway here three weeks but despite the market drift, he worked home quite well late in the piece behind All Stand. I think up to 1400m is a big tick. Just needs to produce better manners.
3 Remittance (Bet Now: $7.00) scored a sharp first up win at Scone before racing in the All Stand race here on December 30. Thought he had his chance and was a touch flat compared to first up but I thought he ran well. Think he is looking for further, which he gets here, so don’t be surprised to see a sharp third up bounce back.
Race 4. (14:30) Happy 100th Birthday Louisa Baxter Mile (85) 1600m
Buttering up on 4 Cellarman (Bet Now: $2.60). Won with authority two back at Warwick Farm before racing at this track/distance and I think just put a line through the run. Had too much to do from where he was and the leaders had it to themselves. If he is within striking range on the turn, I think he’ll be too good.
5 Medaille (Bet Now: $2.60) comes through the race won by Positive Problems here two weeks ago. I thought Bowman gave the Godolphin mare every chance to run down the Bjorn Baker mare but she just packed too many punches when it mattered and clung on. Finds a very winnable race here if she holds that form.
3 Get On The Grange (Bet Now: $15.00) could be one to consider at longer odds, perhaps for multiples. He resumed over 1400m here a fortnight ago where he was completely unwanted but I thought he ran a beauty when fourth to Lanciato. He has the most upside of any runner here and the extra furlong can only assist.
Race 5. (15:05) Summer Sprint 1000m
6 Memes (Bet Now: $2.50) for me. Jason Coyle trains this nippy mare who was one of the real finds during the Winter, where she won a stack of races before ending the prep with a sixth to Invincible Gem in the Missile. Two trials leading in have been great, including on Monday at Warwick Farm. Looks forward enough to win fresh to my eye.
1 Boss Lane (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Randwick specialist who due to his rating will more than likely have to race in events out of his depth, but every now and then he drops to this level and fires. Three of his last four runs at this level have resulted in wins, all coming here, so forget his Christmas Classic effort. Definite knockout hope.
5 Straturbo (Bet Now: $16.00) looks a really good knockout chance to my eye. Gary Portelli trains this sprinter, who drops big time in grade/depth after contesting the Falvelon at Doomben three weeks back. If you were on, it was a painful watch. He was bolting behind the speed but couldn’t get clear at any stage when a luckless fifth to Snitzkraft, who ran a beauty in the Magic Millions Sprint last Saturday. That reads well for this.
Race 6. (15:40) Liberty International Underweiters Handicap (84) 2000m
9 High Opinion (Bet Now: $7.00) is a former Chris Heywood trained galloper who has had three runs for Kris Lees and has gotten better with each run under the belt. Ran over the 1900m at Canterbury last Friday night and chased hard all the way when third to Beijing Board. Has won up to 2000m, so a tough 2000m at Randwick is no issue and he gets good weight relief.
5 Xebec (Bet Now: $3.90) looks to be going really well this prep for Chris Waller and I think he will take some beating here. Had no hope given the tempo over 1800m here a fortnight behind stablemate Hogmanay but he worked home with purpose and produced some excellent late splits. Up to 2000m a big tick and hopefully there is a more genuine pace.
4 More Energy (Bet Now: $26.00) is another that will be suited up to the ten furlongs. He ran over the mile here two weeks ago and ran well given he wasn’t overly suited when fourth to Positive Problems, beaten 1.6L. He has the most upside of any runner engaged here and the stable is absolutely flying at the moment.
Race 7. (16:20) Optus Systems Pty Ltd Handicap (82) 1400m
Not the most reliable galloper going around, but I’ll side with 5 Flow (Bet Now: $2.05). Godolphin gelding who ran over 1200m here a fortnight back and tried hard near the speed but no match late for the above average and potential blacktype horse in Brave Song. That does read well for this and I think up to 1400m is a tick…just needs to put the win on the board now.
4 Level Eight (Bet Now: $3.00) isn’t the most reliable horse going around in terms of winning and the desire to win. In saying that, he did try really hard here a fortnight back at this track/distance but just found Malaise too good, albeit by a nostril. He is bursting to win a race. Gets his chance here, but do I want to back him?
I don’t think 10 El Venetian (Bet Now: $7.00), on form, can beat these, but in other aspects, he ticks the boxes. Lightly raced son of Moshe for the Matty Dale team who won last time out on hos home track at Canberra over 1400m, beating the handy Marrock in a close go. Tumbles to 51kg and I think he gets a sweet run outside Flow.
Race 8. (17:00) Rebecca Louise Handicap (85) 1200m
9 Viceroy (Bet Now: $8.50) for me in a good little race. Luke Pepper has this bloke flying to my eye. Came with a brilliant burst to win two back at Canterbury before racing at this track/distance where he was ridden upside down yet still found and was only nutted near the line by Fortensky. I think with cover and a more patient ride, he can win.
5 Fortensky (Bet Now: $5.00) landed some good bets when resuming with a win at this track/distance a fortnight back. Bowman had the horse parked in a beaut spot just off the pace but was in a bit of trouble getting clear. But he eventually shoved out and the horse did the rest. Looks to be trained this prep with speed in the legs and so far it’s been quite effective.
11 Faraway Town (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Matty Smith trained mare that resumes. She might only be a one race winner, but bear in mind she has contested some quality races throughout her career. 1200m first up looks ideal and she appears forward enough to run well to my eye off the back of a couple of encouraging trial efforts.
Race 9. (17:40) The Honourable James Caird (Tim) Bruxner Handicap (80) 1600m
6 Jaunty (Bet Now: $9.50) is racing so well this time in for Chris Waller. Scored a strong win at the Canterbury midweeks two back before racing here on New Years Day and making up a tremendous amount of ground behind the heavily backed Regine. In career best form and gets really good weight relief from last start.
8 Baysa (Bet Now: $5.50) was just pipped on the peg by stablemate Jaunty at Canterbury before backing up here on Boxing Day and running a game fourth to Live To Dream. Can be hard to catch at times, but she seems to be racing with a more consistency recently, and that extra few days off should freshen her up.
7 Queen Misty (Bet Now: $8.00) is Queen Misty. She tries hard and is a good horse for connections…just doesn’t win. Looked all over a winner a fortnight back but turned it up and Siren’s Fury got the win. Remains down in the weights for this assignment and I think the big factor to note is blinkers first time.
