A strong eight race card has been assembled for Belmont this Saturday where it is Belmont Sprint Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:29) Tabtouch Handicap 1000m
3 Fabergino (Bet Now: $1.20) looks a rising star of WA racing. Tiarnna Robertson trains this three year old, who resumed five weeks back over 1100m at Ascot where he led all the way and was outstanding, running sizzling time and doing it without being fully extended. You’d like to think only bad luck beats her here.
6 Truly Belong (Bet Now: $7.50) was disappointing behind Fabergino in that race mentioned above. Given a three week freshen up and ran a fortnight back where she got back and worked home well late behind stablemate Masquerade. Got the fitness edge on Fabergino but doubt she turns the tables. A definite place chance.
7 Beat The Bell (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Universal Ruler filly for the Sharon Miller who debuted down the straight at Pinjarra where she was midfield in the run but once she balanaced up and got clear air, she lengthened beautifully and won quite well. More depth this time around, but bit to like about the way she is going.
Race 2. (15:09) D'Orsogna Plate 1300m
9 Shapita (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Simon Miller trained filly who debuted at the Ascot midweeks where she led all the way under Pike and though she didn’t beat much, she was quite dominant. This looks one of the weaker Saturday metro two year old races we’ve seen in WA this season, and she looks the pick of the lot.
7 Megachino (Bet Now: $4.50) is a son of Maschino who debuts for the Trevor Andrews yard. This bloke has had a couple of trials leading up to his first day at the races, the latest trial seeing him win here on may 14 and the time was pretty good relative to the morning. Draw is a bit tricky, but he looks a nice type.
1 Fingermark (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Neville Parnham trained youngster who has hard racing under the belt and looks a definite threat. Ran at Ascot a fortnight back where he settled off the pace and tried hard but just no match late for Black Sabbath. The depth is nowhere near as strong here and gets blinkers first time.
Race 3. (15:49) Seacorp Handicap (66+) 2200m
1 Middle Earth (Bet Now: $7.50) for me in a tough staying contest. This bloke ran over 2200m at Ascot a fortnight back where he got a mile back off the speed but finished off quite strongly in the piece when fourth to Palace Rogue. Gets blinkers for the first time which is noteworthy and looks to get a good run in transit.
2 Elegant Blast (Bet Now: $3.70) is a ripping mare for the Justin Warwick yard who is stepping out beyond 2000m for the first time since her three year old season. She ran over 1800m at Ascot last time out where she loomed large to win but just had no answers for the above average Middle Earth. Claim for Kirby helps and she will get the trip.
3 Jazari (Bet Now: $15.00) is the definite improver. He ran third in the Middle Earth race mentioned above and tried hard to reel them in but just ran out time and condition late. He is a horse who will eat up the trip, he has upside and should get the run of the race from the good draw. A definite winning chance for mine.
Race 4. (16:30) Keith Hewson 90th Birthday Handicap (1MW) 1200m
3 Forceful (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Team Williams trained three year old who is two for two this time in. Ran over 1200m a fortnight back at Ascot where he got a mile back but Pike presented him at the right time and he produced a brilliant finale to get the win. He’ll get back again, but the racing pattern does suit Belmont better than Ascot.
12 Sariska (Bet Now: $3.80) is a promising filly for the Vaughn Sigley team. She has won her past two starts impressively, both coming over the 1300m at Pinjarra where she has been near the speed both times and each time she has kicked hard and been dominant. Tricky draw, but she has an ideal racing pattern and is in a winning frame of mind.
7 You Watching Me (Bet Now: $71.00) is an interesting runner. Led all the way to win two back at the Ascot midweeks before racing in the race won by Forceful mentioned above where he got a mile back in the run and finished off quite well late. If they go forward, I think he could potentially take some catching.
Race 5. (17:05) Amelia Park Handicap (72+) 1000m
9 Speeding Comet (Bet Now: $5.50) is a beauty for Simon Miller. Ran over 1100m at Ascot three weeks back where he was on speed throughout and looked to give a really good kick but was outgunned late by a beauty in Enticing Star. Back to 1000m is a big tick and ideally, I’d love to see this horse ridden with a bit of cover.
4 Super Maxi (Bet Now: $2.80) is a very interesting runner. Well bred galloper that makes his WA debut for the Chris Gangemi team after formerly being with Team Hawkes. His form in Sydney would see him just about blow these away, and the trial win was pretty good. Just want to see him do it before diving in.
6 Show Honey (Bet Now: $6.50) is three weeks between runs for the Adam Durrant team since racing over 1200m at Ascot where she got good cover just off the pace and once Pike got her into clear air, she savaged the line and proved far too good for her rivals. Good record at Belmont and a fast run 1000m will suit her.
Race 6. (17:40) Schweppes Handicap (72+) 1300m
8 Enticing Star (Bet Now: $1.20) is indeed a star and she should be taking care of this lot, all things being equal. Her win last Saturday pricked the ears of most in racing. The manner in which she did it was that of a Stakes class horse and indeed potentially a Group l horse. Keen to see what she does and how brilliant she can be.
9 In Love With Paris (Bet Now: $5.50) is three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m at Ascot where she tried very hard but I reckon the hard seven furlongs probably just saw her out when second to Alpha Sky. I think the freshen up and back to 1300m are two big ticks for her to run well and fill a place.
6 Debellatio (Bet Now: $19.00) is a talented three year old for the Fred Kersley team who gets the blinkers for the first time and he certainly has the ability and class to perhaps fill a place. Good run last time but I reckon the weight just got him late. He’s a sharp improver with the head gear I think. Definite for exotics.
Race 7. (18:15) Belmont Sprint 1400m
2 Great Shot (Bet Now: $9.00) on top in a really solid edition of the Belmont Sprint. He did a bit too much work on speed in the Roma Cup and that just told on him late behind Rock Magic. Up to 1400m is a big tick for him and gets blinkers for the first time. Think he is a big sharp improver. Happy to be in his corner.
1 Pounamu (Bet Now: $4.20) is the Kingston Town winner that kicks off his Winter prep. His Carnival prep was simply outstanding, highlighted of course by his Group l win in the Kingston Town. Trialled up enormous and does have class on his side. He’ll give them a start but he will be charging at them late and go close.
7 Falcon Crest (Bet Now: $7.00) is seven weeks between runs for the Williams camp since scoring a dynamic win in the Old Comrade at Ascot. He was given a sweet ride off the pace and his class got him home. I think there is a bit more depth to this line up but hard to knock how genuine he is. Definite threat.
Race 8. (18:50) Crown Towers Handicap (1MW) 1600m
13 Midnight Sky (Bet Now: $2.50) is a quality mare for Adam Durrant who is two for two this time in, the latest coming three weeks back over the mile at Ascot where she got back off the pace but Pike always had her in control and she proved far too good for her rivals. Record at Belmont isn’t great but she looks a different horse now.
3 Cash On Call (Bet Now: $9.00) is three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m at Ascot where Pike had him on speed. He attempted to lead all the way and gave a good kick but just felt the pinch late when third to Kokopu. I think with a more conservative ride, he’ll be better off and is a key chance for sure.
10 Battle Torque (Bet Now: $15.00) is an Adam Durrant trained gelding who resumed four weeks back over the mile at Ascot where he was back near last and never really looked likely but his finale behind Missile Launch was very good. His record at Belmont is very slick, he has upside and if they go hard, he’s the horse to watch out for.
