A bumper ten race card has been assembled for Ascot this Saturday where it is Northam Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Northam Stakes 🏆: View the Field for the Northam Stakes
Race 1. (12:53) CROWN PERTH PLATE 1000m
2 Sassy Trader (Bet Now: $2.75) for me in a tricky 2YO contest. Son of Trade Fair that is on debut for the Casey stable off the back of a strong 1000m trial win at Belmont a couple of weeks ago. Led throughout and when asked for an effort, the change up speed was there and he won very nicely. Think he’s a safe option against these.
Giving respect to 4 Zangief (Bet Now: $4.40), a son of Street Boss for Team Pearce that is having start one. He’s had a couple of Bunbury trials to prepare, the latest coming last week over 1000m when leading throughout and despite doing a bit wrong in the straight, overall, he looked to move pretty well. Think gate one will be a definite advantage for him.
I’m very interested in 6 Fish Hook (Bet Now: $6.50), a Martin Allan trained daughter of Starspangledbanner that is on debut. This girl has only had the one trial, which came back on Feb 3 when winning narrowly but impressively. Hasn’t been sighted since, so a bit of guessing work going on here, but jockey was booked early and stable doesn’t have a bad record with first up/debut runners.
Race 2. (13:31) TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET HCP 1100m
3 Miss Frost (Bet Now: $1.45) looks a near good thing. Very promising mare for Luke Fernie that lit up the track here when resuming with an electric win from the back over 1000m, running fast time and doing it with plenty in hand. Has won at 1200m. so rising to 1100m is no issue, and if she at least holds her form from first up, she wins.
1 Sir Mambo (Bet Now: $6.00) has returned in pretty good order for Martin Allan. Resumed at this track/distance when badly held up at a vital stage and I think you could make a case that if he got clear air earlier, he goes close to winning instead of running third. Think 1200m suits him better than 1100m, but the resumption was very good.
4 Point Taken (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Demerit mare for Jim Taylor that was fabulous from the back to win here on Good Friday before racing here last Wednesday when wide no cover for the trip and stuck on okay without being a winning threat behind Rock’N’Ruler. Off the Good Friday, can bounce back and run a positive race.
Race 3. (14:11) NORTHAM SUZUKI HCP 1200m
5 Solid Azza (Bet Now: $6.00) on top for me. David Harrison trains this mare, who ran over this track/distance two weeks ago and really liked the way she finished her race off from off the speed when third to Black Ducati, who would be odds on in a race like this, so the form reads well and a couple of key scratchings lean me her way.
1 Double Jeopardy (Bet Now: $6.50) is nearly two years between wins but he’s going well and is knocking on the door. Resumed over 1000m here four weeks ago when wide no cover on speed and fought on very bravely I thought when second to Kramden. He is a horse who does seem to race best on the fresh side so like the gap between runs and rates highly.
6 Pearl Trade (Bet Now: $18.00) is over two years between wins so backing her to win with confidence would be courageous. In saying that, her recent efforts haven’t been too bad without a great deal of luck, the latest when held up for a few strides behind Black Ducati, with that form line reading pretty well for a race like this.
Race 4. (14:51) NORTHAM CARWASH HCP 1600m
Looks a good race for the Michael Lane trained filly 5 Tradensia (Bet Now: $2.45). Definite pass mark here first up behind Son Of A God before stepping up to 1400m here and under a confident on speed steer from Kyra Yuill, the filly was much too good for her rivals. Think 1600m is fine for her and has early speed, so she can overcome the tricky gate.
7 Deputano (Bet Now: $7.50) should be suited here for Lindsey Smith. Was two months between runs when racing over 1500m here two weeks ago and liked the way she found the line late in an on pace dominated affair won by Kelvin. She’s a filly who looks like she’ll get a staying trip with time, so 1600m is fine for her here. Just a metter of where she gets to in the run from the draw.
9 Mercy Prevails (Bet Now: $35.00) doesn’t have the greatest of overall records, but he does try hard and for the most part is thereabouts. Ran over this track/distance on Good Friday when held up for a few strides but had his chance when third to Sowar. Previous run behind Last Of The Line was solid so the form doesn’t read too bad.
Race 5. (15:31) NORTHAM MAZDA3 HCP 2200m
2 British Bessy (Bet Now: $4.00) is one of the class runners of the field and that will carry her a long way towards victory here. Resumed over the mile here two weeks ago and was very good late from off the speed when second to the in form Utgard Loki. She’s got a fab record at this track/distance and has more upside than most.
1 Dark Choice (Bet Now: $4.50) is getting back to her best form, which saw her win the WA Oaks last year. Thought it was a lovely ride from Chris Graham which saw her win three weeks ago. Took off at the time to have full momentum at the top of the straight and that’s what won her the race. Not that much harder here and is well in after the claim.
4 Swift Platinum (Bet Now: $13.00) will roll along on speed and give them something to chase. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago when leading and giving a big sight at odds, but couldn’t quite see it through when bloused late by Red Army. The depth here is nowhere near as strong, so if he runs up to last start, he’ll go awfully close.
Race 6. (16:11) NORTHAM MAZDA STAKES 1100m
Going for a mini upset here in the shape of 5 Electric Light (Bet Now: $9.50), a ripping mare for Adam Durrant that resumes. She hasn’t raced since the Summer Carnival when a close up fourth in the Starstruck. Been given a good break and her recent Belmont trial was very good. Can see her, hopefully, holding the back of Fabergino, sitting off a brutal speed, and blousing late.
2 Flirtini (Bet Now: $3.10) is a big improver here. Comes through the Marjorie Charleson from Good Friday where I thought a very negative ride from Azzopardi cost it the win. Just rode it far too cold while the stablemate was afforded a soft lead and turned it into a sit/sprint. Fast speed for here to sit off and launch late.
3 Uni Time (Bet Now: $21.00) is one I wouldn’t entirely rule out. He resumed two weeks ago over 1000m here where the market said he had three legs and ran accordingly, sitting back and failing to fire a shot behind Guns Of Navarrone. He has an excellent second up record and go back last prep, he was a winner at Stakes level against some quality types. Soft gate to do no work and be strong late.
Race 7. (16:50) NORTHAM MAZDA HCP 1000m
2 Mankind (Bet Now: $6.50) is perfectly set up here for a first up win. Hayden Ballantyne trains this handy sprinter, who hasn’t raced since January 19 in the Mungrup Stud Sprint at Albany when a closing fourth to Baraki Beats. He’s a horse who can sprint very well fresh, he draws a perfect gate to sit off the good speed and Pike on is a good lead.
3 Condor Heroes (Bet Now: $6.50) will look the winner for a long way but the last 50-75m, it’ll be heart in the mouth stuff. Had his first run for Chris Gengemi three weeks ago at this track/distance when showing sustained speed from the front and clinging on to get the job done. Fitter, he’ll come on from that. Just needs to fight hard the last few strides because they’ll be charging late.
9 War Secrets (Bet Now: $11.00) is a big improver here. Resumed over this track/distance two weeks ago when resuming and was well backed to win. Had a good run off the speed, but was keen in the run, and couldn’t finish it off behind Round The Point. More genuine tempo here, he can bounce back for sure for an inform stable.
Race 8. (17:25) NORTHAM MAZDA CX30 1400m
Contender or pretender time for 12 Ocean’s Fifteen (Bet Now: $5.50). Has been hard in the market in all three runs back from a break and has let the punters down each time, the latest being two weeks ago here but was slow to recover, so there were excuses for him. Blinkers back on tells me it’s last resort territory, but at his best, he just about wins.
5 Seannie (Bet Now: $19.00) is a quality mare who is three weeks between runs since resuming over 1200m here where she got back to near last in the run and finished off pretty good behind Celebrity Queen with the jockey stating post race the mare didn’t stride out fully. That’s interesting leading into this given she’s yet to prove herself at 1400m.
I think back to 1400m will suit the Steve Wolfe trained 2 My Greek Boy (Bet Now: $16.00), who ran over the mile here three weeks ago when wide with cover and seemed to have his chance but couldn’t finish it off when fourth to a mare who has found form now, Mystery Miss. Should get a lovely run from the barrier and is hard to beat I feel.
Race 9. (18:05) NORTHAM MAZDA CX9 1600m
6 Kia Ora Star (Bet Now: $9.50) can bounce back here. He was a key drifter in betting when resuming here two weeks ago and the market got it spot on. Had a good run behind the speed but the tempo was very moderate and he got quite keen in the run, leaving him with nothing left for the straight. Putting that down to being too fresh and hopefully that run brings him on for this.
7 Laufey (Bet Now: $5.50) is working up to a win. Has got better with each outing this time in, the latest coming at this track/distance when back in the run and closing off nicely late to finish a close up fourth to Utgard Loki, who is flying at the moment, so think that form reads well, and good lead that Pike remains on for this race.
3 Cocky Dodd (Bet Now: $16.00) is three weeks between runs since sitting on speed at this track/distance and tried hard but couldn’t go on with it when down the track behind King Blitz, who is flying and won again to tick that form off. No horse of that class here and has early speed to overcome the gate. Can bounce back for sure.
Race 10. (18:45) NORTHAM MAZDA HCP 1200m
Throw at the stumps in the get out via 1 Wrinkly (Bet Now: $1.95), a tough nut for Neville Parnham who will make his own luck on speed. Hasn’t raced for a month since attempting to lead throughout in the Old Comrade over the mile and tiring late behind Media Baron. Back to 1200m is interesting, but he’ll make sure it’s a truly run six furlongs.
6 Laverrod (Bet Now: $1.95) is a Team Casey trained three year old that is heading in the right direction. Ran over 1100m here last Saturday, three weeks between runs, and gee he was sharp the way he put them away. Had the good run behind the speed, angled wider, and finished off like a good horse to win well. Confident he goes close from the good draw.
The best version of 5 Pym’s Royale (Bet Now: $5.00) is certainly capable. This Luke Fernie trained gelding is four weeks between runs since racing in the Old Comrade when down the track behind Media Baron after getting back in the run. His best is clearly good enough to beat these. I’d just watch the market and see what it does.
