Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:27) Lazy Yak Plate (Class 3) 1615m
5 Surprise Bullet (Bet Now: $2.50) should just about be beating this field. Was very well backed when racing over the Eagle Farm last Saturday and looked to have his chance when fifth ti Reckless Choice but the pattern recently at the track has been the rail is a no go as the day increases, so perhaps a forgive there. Only time he’s been on the back up, it resulted in a five length romp. He’s better than these if he’s right.
7 Drumadoir (Bet Now: $4.20) looks one of the hardest to beat. This mare started Winx odds when racing at the Sunny Coast last time but had to work hard for the win, with class getting her home in the end. Run prior just saw her get nabbed by the in form Get Stuck In. She’s got the turn of foot to beat these. Just depends where she gets to in the run because she wouldn’t want to be spotting them too much head start.
1 Bernie’s Tiger (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Richie Stephenson trained gelding who is in really good form at the moment. Sat on speed at Toowoomba over the mile last time in what looked a thin race but despite that, he put them away impressively when asked for the effort by Oliver. Yet to really prove himself in town, but hopefully lands on speed and could fill a minor spot.
Race 2. (14:02) Stav, Abby & Matt Handicap (90) 2200m
I think 9 Latino Lover (Bet Now: $71.00) is definitely worth a throw at the stumps. He resumed over the mile at Grafton where he sat back in the run and didn’t really come on behind Was It Worth It but bear in mind that trip is short of his ideal. He’s out to his trip now, stable is going really well and the key to this horse is finding a track with give. He improves significantly when getting his toe in.
1 Estikhraaj (Bet Now: $9.00) could easily bounce back here without surprising. I don’t think the race shape suited him behind Follow Suit where they walked, then dashed, walked again and then sprinted for home, and Estikhraaj couldn’t go with them. If it turns into a sit/sprint from the outset, I think he can be dangerous and of the Waller runners, he’s the value.
7 Perilous Love (Bet Now: $51.00) is another galloper that would love to get her toe in so the forecast for rain would be ideal for her. She ran at the Gold Coast two weeks back on a firm track over 1800m and didn’t come on at all behind Le Mattan, with Fighting Teo second. Out to this kind of trip should suit her, she’s fitter…her winning chances will increase if the rain comes.
Race 3. (14:37) The Emerald Jewel Prelude 1200m
3 Ready To Roam (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Tony Gollan trained son of Better Than Ready who was specked at odds when debuting at Eagle Farm a few weeks ago and though slightly held up, I thought he had his chance when second to Garibaldi. He does look a horse who will appreciate more ground so the extra trip here suits and he does have recent race fitness under the belt.
1 The Odyssey (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Kelly Schweida trained colt who returns to racing, having not raced since the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast where he was outclassed behind Exhilarates. Been given the freshen up and despite no tick over trials, public at least, he does have class/quality on his side given he is a Stakes winner at the track. Has to be respected.
5 Picton (Bet Now: $31.00) is a son of Domesday for Scott Morrisey first up. This bloke debuted on his home track at the Gold Coast back in November when running a game second to Mishani Desire, beaten a couple of lengths but far from disgraced. Remember he was nominated for a couple of races after that in town but was spelled. Looked to trial alright last week and 1200m fresh tells me he’s forward enough to run well.
Race 4. (15:12) The Quartz Jewel Prelude 1200m
Tricky race this. There is forecast for rain, so with that in mind, and hoping it’s right, I’m going on breeding and siding with 3 Niedorp (Bet Now: $4.00), who hasn’t raced since her debut when second to Mishani Spirit at Toowoomba back in October. Been given a good break and looked to trial really well on Tuesday here. Being by Not A Single Doubt, a wet track would be no issue.
1 Raay Of Dreams (Bet Now: $7.50) is the hard fit/in form runner for Kris Lees who is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday at Eagle Farm where she was a drifting favourite and for mine, she had her chance when bloused late by Magic Beans. Perhaps back to Doomben and back on a track with give will help her. If she’s in red figures, I’d be happy to just watch.
6 B’Daisy (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Rex Lipp trained filly having her first start. She’s by Spirit Of Boom out of the former very handy mare A Fine Drop Of Red. Hasn’t been sighted at the trials, but debuting in town tells me that the stable might well have an opinion of this girl. Market will be the best guide with her, but if there’s any nudge, I’d be having something on for sure.
Race 5. (15:52) The Ruby Jewel Prelude 1200m
2 Defence Missile (Bet Now: $4.20) should just about be ready to show his best. Les Ross trains this three year old, who has had two runs back from a spell, each time he has looked in need of the run. Latest run came over the 1050m here three weeks ago when making ground late behind Mishani Hustler. Up to 1200m third up looks ideal and he should be near peak fitness.
10 Trail of Glory (Bet Now: $6.00) you could say was a lucky winner when resuming here a fortnight ago given the stablemate Macewen had no luck at all in the straight, but bear in mind this girl was first up with eyes towards a longer trip and she showed a really good turn of foot when asked by Du Plessis. Remaining at 1200m is the negative because I think 1400m+ will be better, but hard to ignore the resumption.
4 Fuji Flyer (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Heinrich/Rodgers trained gelding who was well backed when resuming in the Trail Of Glory race from two weeks ago and for mine, I thought he had his chance in a disappointing return. Started $4.80 that day, so really, should get double, maybe even triple that price here based on the first up run. But he did show promise in the first prep so willing to give him another look.
Race 6. (16:32) Tatts Members Cup 1615m
8 Coral Coast (Bet Now: $11.00) for me but without a great deal of confidence in a tricky race. Formerly with Anthony Freedman, this mare is now with David Vandyke. For some reason, she was Winx odds when resuming in a Class One at Ipswich and she was held comfortably when running second. That track/trip, plus being first…couldn’t believe she was that short. Have to give her another look at a bigger track out to a more ideal trip. At her best, she’s better than these.
I think one of the safer options here is 1 Emphasis (Bet Now: $3.50), who is having once again a very fruitful prep. Lovely ride from Lloyd got him home at this track/distance two weeks ago, cutting back to the inside for clear and finishing best, just, ahead of El Campeador. Was coming back in trip that afternoon so remaining at the mile looks ideal for this in form gelding. Happy to include him.
5 Xebec (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Chris Waller trained galloper who was off the season for over nine months prior to resuming over 1350m here three weeks ago where he was back on a day where those on speed were advantaged but he closed off really well late behind Sword Of Justice. Second up syndrome off the long break an obvious query, but hard to ignore the resumption.
Race 7. (17:12) Stella Artois Handicap (75) 1110m
Going with the Toby Edmonds trained 15 Linlithgow (Bet Now: $2.50). This mare is first up having not raced since August 25 at the Sunny Coast where she was on speed and tired late behind the handy sprinter Tawfiq Boy. Been given a good break and did trial well on January 22 at the Gold Coast. 1110m first up is an interesting one with her…I’m saying she’s ready to go first up despite the break between the trial.
2 Tabbing (Bet Now: $12.00) is a son of Your Song for the Steve O’Dea stable who was hard in the market when resuming over 1050m here and for mine, his condition just gave way late when attempting to lead all the way, grabbed late by Wudang Blade. Has placed in two of his three second up runs in the past and ideally, I’d like to see him get the drag up behind the speed and be the hunter not hunted.
7 Cool Sequence (Bet Now: $15.00) is the interesting one. Trained by Steve O’Dea, this bloke hasn’t done much this time in, the latest run coming at the Sunny Coast behind the handy galloper Cabeirian. He was down to run last Wednesday where he was really well supported but was a late scratching. That was 1200m, so interesting to see what he does at 1110m here up in grade/depth.
Race 8. (17:47) Weddings @ Tatts Handicap 1200m
5 Plucky Girl (Bet Now: $5.00) for me. Toby Edmonds trains this mare, who is first up after having just one run in the Spring where she was most disappointing behind Stella Victoria. Been given a good break and looked to trial well at the Gold Coast for mine behind Curdled back on January 22. The break between that trial and raceday here is the concern, but she’s got the quality to put herself on speed and prove hard to beat.
Couldn’t back 3 Tumbler (Bet Now: $7.50) to win unless she gets on a big track but given the finish she can produce, she can’t be entirely ruled out. Should have won first up at the Sunshine Coast but was disinterested for the first bit of the race. Then raced here a fortnight back and for mine she was disappointing behind Spurcraft. If she ever shows gate speed and can hold a spot, she’d be winning. Just want to watch her at this stage.
8 Tawfiq Boy (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Kris Lees trained gelding who got a definite pass for mine when resuming here two weeks ago. Got back on the rail and was never really in the hunt behind Spurcraft but did find the line quite well to run fourth to that in form sprinter. Very good second up record and up to 1200m is a big tick for this gelding. Definite winning chance.
Race 9. (18:27) HIT105 Handicap (0MW) 1350m
6 Constant Flight (Bet Now: $2.60) for me. The Vandyke stable can be a hard one to follow but is batting at 24% last 100 runners which is pretty good all things being equal. Constant Flight hasn’t raced since January 9 at this track/distance when starting long odds and despite that market expectation, he had to fight hard for it and just got there. Been given the freshen up and the Sunny Coast tick over trial looked good.
3 Langhro (Bet Now: $3.80) had his first run for Steve O’Dea over 1200m here three weeks ago where he attempted to lead all the way and he gave a good kick but couldn’t quite finish it off and was nabbed late by the in form and well backed Curdled. 1350m is the query with him, but if he can lead and perhaps get a cheap furlong, he’ll take some beating on his Victorian form.
2 I Am Impinge (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of I Am Invincible resuming for the Toby Edmonds stable. This bloke can be hot and cold at times but when he’s on, he’s certainly Saturday city class. He hasn’t raced since September 19 when on speed and fighting hard to win at this track/distance in a race which has produced four winners. Two trials tell me he’s forward enough to run well fresh at this trip and does have a touch of quality about him.
