‘Super Saturday’ comes around at Randwick this Saturday with a bumper ten race program, three of which at Group l level, the feature being the Epsom Handicap (1600m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:50) Midway (bm78) 1000m
Good test here for 4 Capital Reign (Bet Now: $3.90) but I think he’s up to it. Son of Capitalist for Gary Portelli that is putting together a pretty good record. Sustained speed saw him win the Hurricane at Newcastle on Cup Day there, proving too good late. 1000m horse in a 1000m race is usually a good recipe.
1 Lancaster Bomber (Bet Now: $9.00) can bounce back big time back to this level. Forget his run two weeks ago here behind Triple Ace. Got into a nasty spot from the wide gate and couldn’t come on, finishing down the track. Significant drop in depth/grade for him here and he can win this for sure.
3 Oh Please Dianna (Bet Now: $7.50) is flying since joining Annabel Neasham. Fair bit of quality about her win last Wednesday at Gosford I thought. Had to do a bit of work to find the front and was there to be beaten, but she found under Nash, kicked strongly and fended them off. Harder here, and back to 1000m I find interesting, but hard to knock the way she’s going.
Race 2. (12:25) Gimcrack Stakes 1000m
2 Coolangatta (Bet Now: $1.85) just needs luck from the draw and I think she’ll be winning. Maher/Eustace won this race with a very impressive Enthaar and history might be repeated. This girl was very impressive in her trial win, running time, doing it under minimal pressure and had something in hand. Hard to beat.
4 Drisana (Bet Now: $7.50) looks to have her share of talent. Team Snowden filly that won her respective trial. Visually, not as impressive as Coolangatta, but big tick for her is that when pressure was applied and she was ridden out, the response was quite good. Lands in a good spot from the draw and is a key threat.
11 Wild Botanica (Bet Now: $9.00) has had two trials to get ready for her debut, and that is a big advantage for her. First trial was at the Gold Coast before coming here at the official set of 2YO trials. Led throughout, was a real pro and ran fast time, albeit was under pressure throughout. But, she has had that hard grounding and draws soft.
Race 3. (13:00) Arrowfield Breeders' Plate 1000m
4 Kibou (Bet Now: $4.40) has the WaterBott polish and despite drawing wide, he has early speed and hopefully has the quality to get home. He won the opening trial of the official session, with sustained speed from the front coming to the fore and was a dominant winner in good time. Bred to be better as he gets older, but is showing good early promise, so happy to be in his corner.
9 Psychiatrist (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Ryan/Alexiou colt that cost $1.3 Million. There was a bit of quality about his trial win, with J Mac being kind to him the final few strides but still won and had plenty in reserve. Should land in a plum spot from the draw and prove hard to beat here.
13 Victory Moments (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Spieth colt for Kacy Fogden that has had two trials to get ready. Won the first trial at the Gold Coast before coming here and was a solid winner, but nothing to jump up and down about. In saying that, the two trial set up is a big tick.
Race 4. (13:35) Tab (bm88) 1600m
With a tricky race like this, I fall back to the horse who has a good racing pattern and 2 Kiss The Bride (Bet Now: $3.90) fits that criteria. Dominant all the way winner here two weeks ago under Nash, controlling things in front and giving nothing else a look in. Drawn wide, but he doesn’t need to force the issue early. He can slide across, find the front and prove hard to run down.
3 Bigboyroy (Bet Now: $4.80) is racing well for Chris Waller but can’t quite put a win on the board. He had his chance behind Kiss The Bride here last time but just couldn’t reel the Bjorn Baker horse in. He’s becoming costly from a punters perspective but his best is good enough.
4 Al Mah Haha (Bet Now: $11.00) is on a Goulburn Cup path I would assume, and he looks to be ticking along nicely towards that race. Ran over 1500m three weeks back at Kembla and was good late from off the speed when second to dominant winner Love Tap, who didn’t go on with it last Saturday, but I still think that form is solid enough for this.
Race 5. (14:10) Hill Stakes 2000m
8 Duais (Bet Now: $5.50) looks to be ticking along beautifully to my eye. Oaks winning mare that resumed in the Cameron at Newcastle and ran a mighty race in defeat, closing off strongly and looking the winner. Condition just gave way late when third to Ashman. Fitter and up in trip, she’ll take beating.
1 Think It Over (Bet Now: $1.85) looks hard to beat for Kerry Parker. He’s an absolute beauty. Love the way he dug in to win the Chelmsford two back. Enormous effort in the George Main after sitting wide no cover against the track pattern. Stuck on really well when third to Verry Elleegant. If that hasn’t busted him, I think he’ll go awfully close.
5 Cepheus (Bet Now: $61.00) gets to a suitable trip for the first time this prep so an improved showing is on the cards. All of his runs this prep have come around 1400m/1500m and for a horse with Melbourne Cup aspirations, that isn’t an ideal trip. This is more ideal for him. First four contender.
Race 6. (14:45) Premiere Stakes 1200m
I wasn’t sure what to make of 1 Masked Crusader (Bet Now: $2.40) after his first up win at Caulfield but his effort in The Shorts told me he’s well and truly a threat in The Everest. The problem is his racing pattern. It’s horrendous and he can’t keep giving away head starts. If he can settle closer in the run and still be able to produce his late speed, he’ll be extremely hard to hold out.
5 Rothfire (Bet Now: $3.80) is the big query here. First up off a year break in the Shorts and I thought he ran a super race, with his condition just giving way late, understandably so. He could ping the lids and control from the front. If that eventuates, it’ll take a good one to get past him.
I think this will determine whether or not 7 Lost And Running (Bet Now: $5.00) is up to this level. He ran the times of a good horse in the Autumn, but his first test against the big boys in The Shorts, he was a failure, even allowing for being first up and sitting wide no cover. He gets a chance to show us how good he is.
Race 7. (15:25) Flight Stakes 1600m
1 Four Moves Ahead (Bet Now: $4.80) looks the best of the those who have come through the key lead ups. Jury was out after the Silver Shadow but was good in the Furious, then stepped up to 1400m in the Tea Rose and was an impressive winner, being strong late. Can she stretch her brilliance to the mile?
5 Startantes (Bet Now: $4.40) is hard to beat. Wasn’t sure what to make of her last Saturday in the Golden Rose given her form in Brisbane, relative to Sydney, was rubbish I thought, but she ran out of her skin behind In The Congo and definitely stamped herself as a horse who can measure up in this part of the world, and back to the Fillies, she’ll take beating.
This might be all too soon for 8 Von Trapp (Bet Now: $9.50), but she looks the one with upside/progression. Narrow maiden win at Hawkesbury. Then thrown in the deep end in the Tea Rose and I thought she was excellent from the back behind Four Moves Ahead. If she can sit closer in the run, I think she’ll take beating up to the mile, where she is bred to eat it up.
Race 8. (16:05) Epsom Handicap 1600m
I’m keen to have an each way bet on 3 Dalasan (Bet Now: $11.00). He is a high quality horse when right and comes here third up with enormous upside to come. More or less a barrier trial first up at the Valley behind Express Pass before going to the Rupert Clarke where he was good late from the back behind Sierra Sue. Both races, the form has been ticked off, he ran well in the Doncaster, gets J Mac…I think he’ll only run well.
9 Riodini (Bet Now: $4.20) is the most obvious from a weights perspective. He has really found form in recent times thanks to great on speed steers, both times just coming unstuck. Two back was nabbed on the peg in the Chelmsford by Think It Over, then in the George Main, it took Verry Elleegant to wear him down. Right down in the weights, he’ll look the winner for a long way.
13 Atishu (Bet Now: $17.00) is another that is very well in at the weights. Ridden a bit upside down in the Bill Ritchie, but had to be ridden to win the race given that race was a win and you’re in for this race. She got the job done and showed good ticker late. Ridden a bit more conservatively, I think she’ll be strong at the end.
Race 9. (16:45) The Metropolitan 2400m
12 She’s Ideel (Bet Now: $6.50) can book herself a Melbourne Cup berth with a win here. Outstanding return in the Winx Stakes before a somewhat plain effort I thought in the Chelmsford. Got out to 2000m in the Kingston Town, got juice in the track, and the result was a dominant win. Better suited up to 2400m, not badly in at the weights, upside, in form…she’ll do me.
8 Montefilia (Bet Now: $6.00) looks to be flying…can she run 2400m? The two times she has raced at that trip, I would have to say she has been a failure. There are two schools of thought IMO with her leading into this. First, she is more mature and relaxed, and is racing like 2400m will be ideal. Or, she has been ridden cold, has found the line strong and has been somewhat flattered by said cold steers. She could easily win this without surprising.
17 No Compromise (Bet Now: $16.00) looks a knockout chance. Ran well in the Newcastle Cup last start where he had little luck at a vital stage and you could make a small case to say he wins with clear air when a close up third to stablemate Great House. Lands in a good spot from the draw, hard fit, in form…he’ll run well.
Race 10. (17:20) Cleanaway (bm94) 1200m
12 Gravina (Bet Now: $2.25) looks to have returned in really good order. Think you can easily make a case to say he should have won first up here two weeks ago. Pilot error from Collett cost him the win, taking time and ground to get to the outside before eventually getting clear and charging late to just miss. Better luck this time around, he’ll look the winner.
1 Big Parade (Bet Now: $3.50) has sustained speed from the front, so that will carry him a long way towards victory. Smashed the clock when winning first up at Kembla. Raced there again in the Theo Marks when on speed, rolling, and feeling the pinch late. Back to 94 grade, he’ll run such a bold race.
The speed map looks kind for 2 Prime Candidate (Bet Now: $7.50) to run well fresh. Bjorn Baker trained gelding who resumes, having not raced since the Autumn Carnival when down the track in the Star Kingdom behind Signore Fox. Has looked great in two trials and stable finds J Mac to steer.
