A strong eight race card will be run and won at Morphettville this Saturday where it is Spring Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out ten metres from the 1200m-400m; Out seven metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:06) James Boags Premium Handicap (82) 2032m
1 Alamonteel (Bet Now: $1.95) is a quality mare for Patrick Payne who does look the clear horse to beat. She has spanked them at her past two starts over the 1950m on the Parks track, the latest coming a fortnight back where she won without really being extended. 2000m on the course proper is a different beast, but I think she’ll handle it.
7 Sasun (Bet Now: $11.00) had been racing very well without winning but that came to a halt at the midweeks at this track/distance when striking a thin race and aided by a lovely ride from in form hoop Krystal Bishop, the gelding for the job done. He’s hard fit/in form and I think he can close here for sure.
4 Happy As Hell (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Team O’Sullivan trained stayer that is working towards a win. He ran over 2100m at Swan Hill last time out and tried hard in defeat when a game third to Onya Keithy. Trialled up well over the sticks on Monday to keep his mind focused. Doubt he wins but should run well.
Race 2. (13:41) Schweppes Handicap (82) 2500m
1 Kellstorm (Bet Now: $1.65) does look to pick himself here. Darren Weir trained stayer that was given a sweet ride by Paul Gatt three weeks back at this track/distance. Had the dream sit off the pace before getting three wide cover and then before the turn, Gatt eased wider and put the race away easily. Should do something similar.
2 Flying Casino (Bet Now: $8.00) is a ripper for John Hickmott. He can be hit and miss at times but he was game in defeat last time out here when second to Kellstorm. Never really looked like winning, but perhaps should have finished closer had he got out earlier. Not sure he can turn the tables, but should run well again.
4 Duquessa (Bet Now: $41.00) should appreciate the drop in depth after racing over 2500m at Flemington a fortnight back where she was clearly outclassed in a strong staying event behind Yogi. This looks more her level and while I doubt she beats Kellstorm, she should run well nonetheless.
Race 3. (14:16) UBET Handicap (70) 1050m
2 Sebfire (Bet Now: $1.95) looks a standout just like stablemate Kellstorm does. His first up win at Swan Hill was enormous I thought. Might have only been a 975m scamper, but he was back and wide, with the horse in front going backwards. Lane had to come very wide, make a run before the home yet he still rounded them up with ease. Very promising and should take care of this lot.
8 Jaclyn (Bet Now: $3.30) is a filly that resumes for the David Jolly stable. This girl has only had the one race start, which came at Murray Bridge where she was a hard favourite and didn’t disappoint with a dominant win. Loved her trial win recently, did it easily and to the eye she has really come on.
4 Sharing Secrets (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Macdonald/Gluyas trained son of Testa Rossa who wasn’t really fancied when resuming here three weeks ago but he defied the odds and closed off very nicely from the back when running a close up second to the Darren Weir runner Poseidon’s Pool. That’s really good form for this.
Race 4. (14:51) Adelaide Galvanising Handicap (70) 1050m
2 Federal Court (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented Star Witness gelding that is first up for the Kennewell camp. He only raced twice during the Autumn and failed to flatter, but both races were stronger than this. Thought he trialled up well last week behind I Am Zelady and he can run well fresh. Definite yard/market watch.
8 Nodoubtaboutit (Bet Now: $4.40) can be a sharp improver here. She was a big flop to my eye last time out at Gawler when sitting on speed and fading out of it behind Miss Jane, but that form was franked big time last week. She is a proven city peformer who is right in this on her best form.
7 Mile High (Bet Now: $5.50) is a John Macmillan trained four year old that ran over 1100m at Gawler last Wednesday and though he only beat a field of four, he did it impressively in leading all the way and ran okay splits relative to the day. He is a swimmer so the the wet track won’t harm him and he has hard fitness under the belt.
Race 5. (15:31) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (70) 1600m
Hard to go past 4 Game Of War (Bet Now: $2.50). He had been teasing for a little while to win but I don’t think people saw what he did a fortnight back coming. He won like Winx, winning by over six lengths without being fully extended. On that effort, he’ll eat up the mile here and the bigger track should only suit him.
13 Correct Call (Bet Now: $8.50) should be suited by the rise to the mile. She ran over 1250m on the Parks track a fortnight ago and did a good job in defeat I thought behind Nipperkin. Got back in a slowly run race and took her time to build momentum but was good late. Looking for further and gets on a bigger track.
16 Sagaab (Bet Now: $41.00) is a gelding in really good form at the moment, albeit at the provincials. Last two runs have come over 1500m at Gawler, winning impressively two back before a game fourth against the bias behind Dollar Dollar Bill. Strikes a winnable race and he draws to get good cover and launch late.
Race 6. (16:11) Hughes Limousines Handicap (75) 1200m
12 Showpero (Bet Now: $2.30) is a talented mare for the Francis/Grant team that drops big time in grade/depth after contesting the Lightning three weeks back where she ran a beauty against the odds when fourth to Bandipur. That form has been franked via Mystified and back to 75, she’ll take some beating.
3 Proud Wolf (Bet Now: $4.20) has to rate highly here for the Hopes. Loved his return at Sandown where he was given a nice ride off the pace by Zahra and loomed to win, hitting the front but just lacked the killer punch that the quality mare Written Era. That reads well for this surely despite a poor second up record.
4 Colonel Custer (Bet Now: $12.00) is a talented son of Savabeel resuming for Stokes again after formerly being with him. Had a stint with Bjorn Baker in Sydney and ran okay without really measuring up. Loved his Gawler trial last Thursday and though 1200m is short of his best, his class will make sure he’s a threat.
Race 7. (16:51) David R Coles AM Spring Stakes 1200m
Taking the chance on 13 I Am Zelady, (Bet Now: $8.00), keeping in mind I am doing this race with the Victorian runners staying home. This girl was formerly with Joe Pride but is now with Phillip Stokes and gee she looks to have settled in nicely based on a lovely trial win last week where she did it very comfortably and ran time. Great chance to get some blacktype from the soft draw.
4 Lord Aspen (Bet Now: $10.00) is a high quality galloper resuming for the Mick Huxtable yard. He has a few different versions of himself so it is hard to be confident about him, but we know that when he is right, he is a definite Group class horse and even bottom end Group l. Loved what I saw in a recent trial and he flies fresh.
9 Mio Dio…(Bet Now: $16.00) bravo to Will Clarken. This horse was penned down as just a mudlark once upon a time but Clarken has turned this horse in a decent blacktype horse, highlighted by his unbelievable win in the Topaz during the Swan Hill Carnival. He too has looked good at the trials and if they go silly in front, this is the one.
Race 8. (17:26) Irish Raceday September 2 Handicap (64) 1200m
4 Enzo The Barber (Bet Now: $4.50) came with a brilliant finishing burst to win first up before racing on the Parks track again a fortnight back where nothing really went right for him in running and it was a forgive behind Ascendance. First up win was too good to ignore so be wary of the third up bounce back.
14 Mica Be The One (Bet Now: $6.50) is reaching her D-Day but she does find a very winnable assignment. This mare comes through the Game Of War race a fortnight back on the Parks track. That horse won like Black Caviar and walked in while this girl just did a bit too much from the gate and was flat late. Draws to get really cover here and have last say.
10 Pluckit (Bet Now: $9.50) is a four year old that resumes for the Mick Huxtable stable. This bloke debuted in April over 1200m at Murray Bridge where he was hard in the market despite no trials and he came with a well timed run under Ryan Hurdle to get the win. Thought his trial last week at Gawler was good and he’s the interesting one.
