Nine races will be run and won at Doomben on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is out a metre for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:37) Eloise Gannon Foundation Handicap (70) 1050m
6 Impregnable (Bet Now: $1.50) looks the way to go for me in a tricky affair. This gelding put together a couple of nice wins at the provincials before racing over 1200m here a fortnight back where that saw him out I think when fourth to Havasay. Back to 1050m is perfect and this field doesn’t have as much depth.
8 Nakanai’s (Bet Now: $15.00) best days are probably behind him but the lack of depth here brings him into the mix I think. Didn’t mind his effort last time out on his home track at the Gold Coast when getting off the pace and working home with purpose late behind National Trail. Draws to get a suck run and the claim really helps.
3 Life’s Like That (Bet Now: $27.00) deserves a crack in town. This bloke ran over 900m at the Gold Coast a fortnight back and the win was huge I thought. Four and five wide no cover in the scamper, which is never easy, but he kept finding under Woodhouse and finished best in a driving go. Not sure he can win, but he can definitely add value in multiples.
Race 2. (12:12) The Big Chop Handicap (75) 1050m
16 Jetsonic (Bet Now: $6.00) gets the nod in a tough race to sort out with confidence. This talented gelding resumes for Tony Gollan after a pretty consistent prep in the Summer/Autumn, but he only won the one race. It come first up, like his other two career wins, and he appears ready to go off the back of a really nice trial behind the well performed El Sasso.
6 Live Fast (Bet Now: $3.70) does look the main threat now with the scratchings. He comes through the Stellarcraft race here three weeks back where nothing really went right for him and the run was better than what it reads numerically. Should get the gun run from the gate and rates highly.
10 Lady Sioux (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented mare for Steve O’Dea who is back in his care after a stint in North Queensland with Jeff O’Dea where she piled on the wins and was quite consistent up there, but just lacked the killer punch to match it with the better ones ie Tyzone. I’ll be very interested to see what the market does.
Race 3. (12:47) Moda Events Portside Handicap 1350m
2 Rancho Montoya (Bet Now: $2.60) is a boom three year old first up for the Stuart Kendrick yard off a little freshen up. Won as he liked on debut at Ipswich, winning by a space, before coming here where he was odds on and looked to have his chance I thought when second to Ilovevegas. Trial win here last week was very good and he looks ready to go.
5 Francisca (Bet Now: $3.90) is a filly showing good promise at the moment for Steve O’Dea and Proven Thoroughbreds. Bolted up to break the maiden two back at the Gold Coast before going to the Sunshine Coast where she took on some nice mares and she rounded them up very nicely from off the pace. Hardest test to date here, but I think she can measure up.
4 Umberto (Bet Now: $9.00) was a tragedy beaten when resuming here, running a luckless second to Hingus Rose. Tony Gollan then sent her to the Gold Coast for the easy kill and while she got the kill, it wasn’t easy. McMahon had to get stuck in and she kicked into gear late. 1350m looks ideal and should be close to peak fitness.
Race 4. (13:22) Eaton Services Group Handicap 1600m
3 Sheiswhatsheis (Bet Now: $2.80) is a bit hot and cold at times, but she produced her best when winning at this track/distance a fortnight back. She didn’t get much peace when racing on speed, and looked in trouble, but she kicked hard when it mattered and drew clear late. Leads again and should take some beating.
8 Pindan Pearl (Bet Now: $2.90) is a very hard mare to trust/follow, but she again looks a threat. Said the same thing here two weeks ago where she looked the key danger to stablemate Sheiswhatsheis, and really, given the run she had, she should have won, but didn’t finish it off as expected. She can win, but I won’t be backing her. Still, a threat nonetheless.
9 Yaba Dabl Doya (Bet Now: $16.00) is the fresh blood here and comes in as a knockout chance, especially with the feather weight. He had no chance here a fortnight back over 1350m behind Alassak given that horse crawled them in front and sprinted when asked. This horse should do no work from the soft draw and has a turn of foot.
Race 5. (13:57) Brisbane BMW Handicap 1350m
Going to give my old mate 4 Steel Zip (Bet Now: $4.80) another look here. He comes through the Oxford Poet race three weeks back at this track/distance where he was given an economical run near the inside before shoving into the clear and he looked a live threat but he just lacked the turn of foot. Should be at peak fitness now and this race does carry less depth.
1 Charlie Boy (Bet Now: $3.30) can be a bit of a pest for punters but I think he has been really good in two runs for the Gollan stable. Fitness just gave way fresh before a gallant fourth to Stella Ombra, who franked the form. Third up from a soft draw here, no excuses for mine. He gets his chance.
7 L’Entrecote (Bet Now: $13.00) had trialled up really well prior to resuming over 1200m here where he got back on a day where leaders were somewhat advantaged but he stuck on okay I thought behind Stella Ombra, who won last week to give a tick to that form line. Does have a really good second up record and I’m happy to include him.
Race 6. (14:32) Northside Women's Health Handicap (75) 2200m
10 Lascar…(Bet Now: $9.00) well if you backed it last start here, just forgive and forget he went around. It was a plain ride from Fradd to be fair, sitting wide throughout with no cover in a small field. Had to drop out and he did. The efforts prior were very good and there was a strong market push last start. I’ll respect that money leading into a similar event.
3 Devil Hawk (Bet Now: $5.50) had been performing okay in Sydney without really threatening which is why Chris Waller sent the stayer up north and it paid off immediately with a smart win, albeit the field wasn’t as strong, which is something you can say about this line up too, so on that basis, he has to be rated highly.
9 Gorada (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Scott Morrisey trained mare who rises in depth/grade but I think she can measure up. She ran over 1800m on her home track at the Gold Coast where she got a bit too far back in the run but I liked the way she closed off late behind Thermal Unit. 2200m is different gravy, but she is on the limit and can reel off a decent sectional.
Race 7. (15:12) Clayfield Jewellery Plate (Class 3) 1600m
13 Gypsy Miss (Bet Now: $5.00) looks the one for me here. She has had no luck in recent times and really should have won a race or both of them had things gone her way. Raced here a fortnight back where she did work from the gate and was nabbed near the peg by Pleased. Confident she can turn the tables.
6 Natural Black (Bet Now: $3.40) just missed out on the win two back at the Sunny Coast when a narrow second to Miss Dubois, who ran well at Randwick subsequent to frank that form. He then ran over the mile here three weeks back and worked home well late in the piece behind Meet And Greet, who won last week. He can win this for sure.
7 Pleased (Bet Now: $7.50) did win that race mentioned above and it was purely down to the more economical run in transit. Byrne had his horse parked just off them, ready to pounce and so it proved. Not sure things will fall into place like it did a fortnight back, but confidence is a wonderful thing and I’m sure he has it now.
Race 8. (15:52) Chemist Warehouse Plate (Class 6) 1200m
10 Havasay (Bet Now: $2.80) is an in form sprinter for Liam Birchley who looks the one here. Given a lovely ride to win two back during the Grafton Carnival before McGillvray jumped on a fortnight and he gave the horse a beaut steer, parked in the box seat before getting the split and dashing clear. He can continue the picket fence.
1 El Sasso (Bet Now: $31.00) could be the sharp improver here at huge odds. Tony Gollan trained galloper for Triple Crown Syndications who hasn’t really fired a shot in two runs this time in, but I put him in the blackbook off the back of a lovely trial win here last week over Most Important and The Amateur, two nice types.
14 Passionflower (Bet Now: $23.00) is a talented mare that resumes for the David Vandyke yard. This mare is getting on in years but she still appears to have a healthy zest for racing, as we saw last time in as well as in a recent trial where she looked quite sharp to the eye. Expecting her to run a bold race fresh.
Race 9. (16:32) Got It Covered Handicap (75) 1350m
6 Mishani Sleuth (Bet Now: $4.00) does look the obvious. He was backed as if unbeatable when racing here a fortnight back but on face value, he was a touch disappointing given the quote he was at. Maybe he didn’t handle the back up, maybe ridden too close? Not sure, but I’ll forgive him for that and butter up here.
3 Dantga (Bet Now: $61.00) is a talented yet frustrating runner who has promised so much throughout his career but I’m not quite sure he has lived up to it. His effort in the Dan Baker Sprint on Coffs Cup Day was very good I thought. Did a power of work from the wide gate to get up near the speed, hit the front and was only beaten off late. Softer trip here, he can threaten.
17 Archytas (Bet Now: $35.00) comes through the Cornrow race here at this track/distance a few weeks ago and despite starting long odds, gee I thought his effort was very good considering how far back he was. Prior, he was a risk beyond 1200m, so that is the worry here; can he repeat that effort, because if he does, he’s right in this.
