The title of being the best horse during the Sydney winter will be decided on Saturday at Rosehill Gardens with the running of the $100,000 Listed Winter Stakes (1400m), where we will see the clash of the two in form gallopers, Generalife and Scream Machine. Both have won their past two and seemingly have a stranglehold on the race.

Race One: Inglis $5 Million Race Series- Entries Close July 31 Handicap 1200m Form Guide
Back Me: Really good race for the babies. Putting Press Report (Best Odds: $3.30) on top. She has some very good form behind her. On debut she ran second to Memorial. She was then spelled and resumed in the Silver Slipper where she ran second to Mossfun, then ran fourth to Believe Yourself in the Sweet Embrace before finishing down the track in the Magic Night to Bring Me The Maid. Those four horses filled the first four in the Golden Slipper, and on the back of a brilliant trial win, she looks the way to go.
Big Danger: Double Happy (Best Odds: $6.00) resumes for the Chris Waller after a solid campaign in the Autumn, which saw him place behind subsequent Group l performers, including Bachman and Scratch Me Lucky. Two lead up trials for his return have been encouraging and the stable is white hot at the moment.
Roughie: Liberation (Best Odds: $7.00) is the interesting runner here for Gai Waterhouse. Had two runs during the Autumn, both on wet, tight turning tracks at Warwick Farm and Canterbury respectively behind subsequent Group l performers Wandjina and Scratch Me Lucky. He bolted in at a recent Randwick barrier trial and a repeat of that will see him prove hard to beat.

Race Two: Forum Group Handicap (80) 1200m Form Guide
Back Me: Despite the fact he is taking on the older horses, Cluster (Best Odds: $1.80) looks the way to go here. He was very good in the Spring, running a narrow third to Divine Calling and Shamus Award in the Stutt before getting no luck in the Caulfield Guineas. Resumed the other day at Kembla and got the easy kill by nearly ten lengths, running good time. Might only be a one race winner, but he has the class.
Big Danger: Rock Sturdy (Best Odds: $9.50) resumes for Joe Pride after a really good Autumn, which saw him place behind subsequent Group l performers in Singing Flame and Gypsy Diamond. Two lead up trials have been encouraging, and although he is better suited over further, again, class will take him a long way towards victory.
Roughie: The street corner tip for the past couple of weeks has been Longeron (Best Odds: $8.00) and the way he has been working at Flemington. I haven’t seen vision of his work, but from all reports, it has been very sharp and from a horse who is primed to win first up. First up last time in he ran Sistine Demon to just over a length. That horse went on to win at blacktype level on several occasions, so he does look well placed here only a kilo over the minimum.

Race Three: Primo Smallgoods Handicap (95) 1100m Form Guide
Back Me: Really tricky race. Casual Choice (Best Odds: $4.40) for me but. It took a gun ride by in form hoop Jason Collet for this former Chris Waller galloper to get the money when racing over this track/distance a fortnight back. They clash again, and the top tip does have to give a kilo from that outing, but that can be offset by the fact he has more upside.
Big Danger: Cradle Me (Best Odds: $3.30) looks the obvious danger given she is absolutely flying at the moment, winning her opening two runs this prep before narrowly getting beat at her next two behind Kristy Lee and Casual Choice respectively. The signs are there that she could be towards the end of her campaign, but she ticks all the other boxes to be a force here.
Roughie: Earnest Ernest (Best Odds: $14.00) finished third behind the above pair in that race we are talking about, and he was quite good there from the back, picking through the field late. Similar scenario here and gets a weight pull on both runners.

Race Four: Bob Ingham Handicap (90) 1900m Form Guide
Back Me: Chris Waller will win the race, maybe even fill the trifecta with luck. Which one will it be? I think it’ll be the one which is on the up this prep, Multilateral (Best Odds: $3.00). Really caught the eye first up at Randwick behind You’ll Never, making up nice ground late, then did much the same here two weeks back behind that same horse. Up to an ideal distance now, starting to get near peak fitness and strikes suitable conditions.
Big Danger: Done Nothin’ Wrong (Best Odds: $4.40) was given a peach ride by the Pumper to win three back at Canterbury, then came here a fortnight back and was lifted over the line by Tye Angland in a three way photo finish. He then raced last week and was very solid late behind Specific Choice. Rock hard fit and back to the Rosehill 1900m is a big tick.
Roughie: Too Hi Tek (Best Odds: $17.00) had no luck at all when racing here a few weeks ago when a two length fifth to Done Nothin’ Wrong. He was making ground near the inside as they straightened, and looked as if he was going to burst through, only to be cut out and go to the line under a hold. We have seen some upsets recently at Saturday racedays in Sydney and this horse could provide another if the breaks go his way.

Race Five: Ladbrokes.com.au Handicap (74) 1200m Form Guide
Back Me: Wonderbolt (Best Odds: $4.20) was an alarming drifter in betting when racing here a fortnight back, but gee he showed a sharp turn of foot when presented and put the race beyond doubt in a couple of strides. He has always promised to do that in town, and he finally did emphatically. No harder here, so he is the clear horse to beat.
Big Danger: Chateau Lafaite (Best Odds: $7.00) didn’t come up in the Autumn, failing dismally in two runs against the best three year olds in the Surround and Pharlap respectively. Both barrier trials to prepare for this have been encouraging, and on her best form she’d go very close. Market moves should be monitored.
Roughie: Coolring (Best Odds: $5.50) had the charmed run off a hot speed at Canterbury and just pounced on the tired leaders on the turn and skipped clear for a dominant win. Fast run 1200m is his go and I see good speed here, so he should be suited again and can definitely win this.

Race Six: Myer Fashion Winter Stakes 1400m Form Guide
Back Me: As we said at the top, it looks to be a two horse race between Generalife and Scream Machine (Best Odds: $3.50). Sticking with the latter because he has the class factor on his side and is proven at this level and beyond when racing over this distance. He has really had no right to win his past two given he was in a bad spot two back, then last start wasn’t suited by the slow pace, yet on both occasions he got the breaks and his class rose to the occasion. I expect that to happen again.
Big Danger: Generalife (Best Odds: $3.40) has been very consistent right throughout this preparation, and showed he is going to be a force here with a spanking of his rivals in the lead up to this event, the Civic Stakes (1350m), a fortnight back, showing a dazzling turn of foot to the race beyond doubt in the space of 50m. Has to go to another level here to challenge Scream Machine, but he is capable.
Roughie: Tromso (Best Odds: $18.00) was disappointing last time out in the Civic, but his run prior to that behind Scream Machine was excellent. Maps quite well here, and with the rail out, leaders may prove hard to catch. Include him in exotics provided there is no give in the ground.

Race Seven: Hungry Jack’s Handicap (85) 1350m Form Guide
Back Me: Going for some value in Made To Order (Best Odds: $9.50). Like Chateau Lafaite, she simply didn’t come up in the Autumn in the better class three year old races. Like that same filly also, she has been quite good in a couple of barrier trials leading up to her return to racing. Inside gate, 50kg, in form trainer and apprentice…$8 looks appealing.
Big Danger: Sense And Reason (Best Odds: $5.50) has been freshened since failing over the 1500m a few weeks back behind Romantic Moon, who will go around as a leading player in the Winter Stakes. That distance is probably a touch beyond her, so she is better suited here, and gets a bit of weight relief.
Roughie: My Sabeel (Best Odds: $21.00) was quite solid last time out at Canterbury, sitting three wide on a genuine speed and sticking on quite gamely for fourth to Mineko. She is a winner at this track and draws to get a soft run on the inside. When cuddled away, she can let down quite powerfully, especially if there is any give in the ground.

Race Eight: Alpha Flight Services Handicap (80) 1500m Form Guide
Back Me: Cape Clear (Best Odds: $8.50) looked very sharp in winning a barrier trial late last month, then ran a beauty at Warwick Farm given he was four and five wide all the way out the back in a race dominated by those near the pace. His closing sectionals were one of the best on the program and only needs to repeat that to go very close here.
Big Danger: Paederos (Best Odds: $5.00) has been quite consistent in recent times and was rewarded with a gun ride from Winona Costin to get the job done in that race mentioned above with Cape Clear. Maps quite well here and Jeff Lloyd is back on, and he knows the horse very well.
Roughie: Pentometer (Best Odds: $14.00) resumes here for Chris Waller off the back of a couple of pleasing barrier trials to prepare for his return to racing. Raced very well last time in the staying races, and that is his distance range, but 1500m first up tells me that he might be forward enough to run a cheeky race fresh.
