Midweek racing returns to Sportingbet Park this Wednesday, this time back at the Hillside circuit. The weather is fine, the track is dead and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.

Race One (13:00) : Equiano King Of Speed Handicap 900m Form Guide
Back Me: Tough race to kick off the card. Just going on the trial form, and that lies with Not A Single Shout, who bolted in at the Terang barrier trials. What she beat there and the times don’t look all that great, but she has the Weir polish and Oliver is booked.
Big Danger: Eva’s Day was good on debut at her home track at Bendigo when a closing second to subsequent stakes performer Stingray. Draws much better here and has the race experience.
Roughie: Sagacious Miss looked to trial well back in October behind Oakleigh Girl before trialling last week at Cranbourne and looking quite big in condition and outpaced. Well bred youngster who could surprise.
Race Two (13:35) : Race-Tech Maiden Plate 1400m Form Guide
Back Me: Going for Kept Woman (Best Odds: $4.40) here. This daughter of Savabeel has had four runs to date, running a close up fourth on debut back in May to stablemate and Group ll winner Spirits Dance. In three runs during the Spring, she ran tenth, fifth and second behind Suadela (city class), Gallatin (stakes placed) and Kobi Sun (city winner), so the form around her is excellent and 1400m first up looks ideal.
Big Danger: Reldas (Best Odds: $4.20) won’t be getting my money any time soon, but in saying that, he is still running quite well. Looked a touch unlucky two back before having his chance over this track/distance a fortnight back. Williams on, drawn well, hard to beat.
Roughie: The step up to 1400m should suit Shot Caller (Best Odds: $9.00), who ran well without winning in his opening two runs this prep, then had his chance last time out when fifth. He did race quite keenly on that occasion, so the step up to this distance should help his cause.
Race Three (14:10) : Leveraged Media Marathon (84) 3200m Form Guide
Back Me: Very ordinary staying race. Going for some value in the Tassie stayer Tsar Of Russia (Best Odds: $4.20). I thought he ran quite well two back in the Launceston Cup behind Epingle, finishing eighth, beaten just over four lengths. Then last start he got badly held up behind some tired runners and should have finished much closer. Takes on a pretty thin lot depth wise, Bossy booked, drawn well…why not?
Big Danger: By His Design (Best Odds: $4.80) is racing so well at the moment but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Made a long and searching run last time out at the Valley and just failed to pick up Mariner and Beauty Perception in a blanket finish. Drops in weight from that run and drops in class, so he looks very well placed. One win from 22 starts is the worry.
Roughie: Man Of Class (Best Odds: $8.00) is ticking over beautifully for the jumps season based on how well he is racing on the flat. He has had four runs this time and has steadily gotten better at each outing with a couple of strong jumps trials in between. Certainly wouldn’t rule him out.
Race Four (14:45) : Vale Roy Higgins Handicap (70) 1000m Form Guide
Back Me: Danger Close (Best Odds: $11.00) for me here. He was given a beautiful steer by Newitt to win over this track/distance a fortnight back against a field that wasn’t much harder than what he faces here. He’ll tuck in behind a hot tempo and look to blouse them late.
Big Danger: Trustam (Best Odds: $6.00) was crunched in betting when resuming at Terang and the daughter of Stratum didn’t let her supporters down, receiving pressure in front before kicking hard in the straight to comfortably win. Gets in beautifully at the weights after the claim, should roll forward and take some catching.
Roughie: The watch horse for me is Rushworth (Best Odds: $41.00), a former Mick Kent runner who had one run for his new trainer Michael Phillips back in August on a bottomless Pakenham track and was never comfortable, and subsequently was found to have bled. He did trial really well prior to that run and he has talent. Watch betting moves.
Race Five (15:20) : Hocking Sturt Handicap (78) 1400m Form Guide
Back Me: Thought this was a race in three. Going with the frustrating galloper Edgewood (Best Odds: $13.00) to crack it for another win. He threw the race away two back when looking the winner, then looked the winner again last start, but was bloused late by Wales and Final Jest in a thrilling finish. Quality galloper when the screws in his head are tightened.
Big Danger: Final Jest (Best Odds: $10.00) was given a peach ride by Harry Coffey in that race mentioned above, but Wales just came with a big, booming final 50m to win. Only meets Edgewood 0.5kg worse off at the weights, and he is more genuine. The barrier is the only reason that sways me towards Edgewood.
Roughie: With the rail out 10m, look for bias early on in the card. If it leans towards leaders, then have a good look at Kerthos (Best Odds: $4.40), who hasn’t raced since running a brave on pace second at Caulfield to Commanding Time, who won the Yarra Valley Cup last Sunday. Should sit near the speed and take some beating.
Race Six (16:00) : Sportingbet Best Tote Plus 5% Handicap (64) 1800m Form Guide
Back Me: I think the inside barrier beat Kansha (Best Odds: $7.00) last time out when fourth to Honey Steel’s Gold. I think he is better suited when outside horses and allowed to make a clear run with no interruptions. That should eventuate here so I’ll be in his corner.
Big Danger: Argos (Best Odds: $5.50) started at about $1.30 last start at Werribee and never gave his supporters a moment of concern, leading all the way to spank his rivals. Second horse ran well at Yarra Valley, so the form has held up and he looks to have plenty of upside.
Roughie: Zedeel (Best Odds: $6.50) was an impressive debut winner at Geelong before finding the 1400m in town a touch too fast for him, but his last 200m was beautiful, closing off really nicely, suggesting that the 1800m will be perfect.
Race Seven (16:40) : TVN Handicap (78) 1800m Form Guide
Back Me: Best bet across Australia for me this afternoon in the shape of Godspiel (Best Odds: $3.30). I tipped her to win the Schweppes Trophy at Flemington last start and she gave a great sight at odds, looming to win 300m out, but the class kicked in late and she ran fourth, beaten just under two lengths by Bonaria. She only goes up 1.5kg on that and comes back to 78 grade…gee she looks well placed.
Big Danger: Azzaden (Best Odds: $6.00) was a very impressive winner at Geelong on debut over the 1700m, doing plenty wrong in the straight but still winning by a handsome margin with something left in the locker. She is well bred and has the talent to match.
Roughie: Alright Already (Best Odds: $12.00) has really reignited his love for racing since coming from Wauchope. Now with Ciaron Maher and has won three races from as many starts under the care of Maher. Ridden against his usual racing pattern and led at Yarra Valley yet bolted in. He deserves a crack in town and rates as a chance.
Race Eight (17:20) : Polytrack Handicap (64) 1400m Form Guide
Back Me: Auntie Beverley (Best Odds: $6.00) for me in the last. Toyed with a pretty ordinary lot on debut at Warrnambool, then had no luck at Seymour before again not getting much room in the straight at Bendigo, then getting clear late and working home well. Should get a lovely sit here provided she jumps cleanly and looks one of the hardest to beat.
Big Danger: Happy Valentine (Best Odds: $11.00) ran second in that Bendigo race Auntie Beverley contested and she was brave herself, sitting wide with no cover and only getting beat just over a length by a city performer in Mrs Hadlee. Again drawn awkwardly, but has talent.
Roughie: Uranie (Best Odds: $11.00) worked home really nicely late in the piece when racing here a few weeks back, running third to a highly promising youngster in Choose. That was her first run in nearly a month, so expect improvement.
