Good Friday racing at Ascot has become a popular race meeting since being created a couple of years ago and the 2019 edition looks to be the best yet where it is Sires Produce Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:30) Amelia Park Handicap (Class Three) 1800m
3 Altamont (Bet Now: $12.00) is a son of Frost Giant for Neville Parnham who resumed over 1500m here a couple of Wednesdays back where he was off the bit before the turn due to a genuine tempo but he kept finding and was quite good late when fifth to High Tea. Not the greatest of overall records but stable is in good form at the moment and up to 1800m should suit this four year old.
4 Jester Noir (Bet Now: $3.00) is a son of Blackfriars for the Paul Jordan stable who takes on the older horses but is in good form. Stuck to the task gamely two back when second to Sophie’s Song at Pinjarra before racing here when sitting in the 1/1 and chasing hard in the straight when third to Early Explorer. Think 1800m will be okay…he could even lead from the gate if need be and prove hard to run down.
1 World Is Yours (Bet Now: $3.40) is an Adam Durrant trained gelding who looks a leading chance. Did a mighty job last time out at Pinjarra when four wide throughout yet kept finding the line in a very game effort, finishing second to Duck Feet. That form looks to read alright for this and if he can get better luck this time around, he’ll look the winner at some stage I’m sure.
Race 2. (15:05) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Maiden 1000m
He looks very raw and new to the caper but 3 War Saint (Bet Now: $2.70) appears to be very good. Neville Parnham trains this War Chant colt, who has had two trials this prep leading up to his debut, the latest over 950m at Lark Hill when he absolutely bolted in, sitting outside the speed before being asked for an effort and despite wanting to lay in, the turn of foot was there for all to see. Just needs to do everything right and I think he’ll put these away.
6 Cambist (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Robyn Lockwood trained filly who was hard in the market when debuting here just over two weeks back when on speed and looking to travel well but her condition just ran out late when third to Silkinize. That form wasn’t exactly franked on Saturday and the depth here in terms of first starters looks strong, but she does have race experience and that’s always an advantage.
9 Rocky Path (Bet Now: $14.00) is a daughter of Therock on debut for Vaughn Sigley. This girl trialled last Monday at Lark Hill where she got back in the small field before presenting wider on the turn and despite not really making ground, she went about her business nicely when fourth. I think barrier one is a big tick for her and if she can take advantage of that, she could well be a threat.
Race 3. (15:40) Seppelt Wines Handicap (0MW) 1000m
Leaning the way of 2 Unibro (Bet Now: $15.00) for Adam Fairey. Resumed over this track/distance over two weeks back when last in the run throughout and was never really in the hunt but did make ground very late behind City Circle. Gets a decent weight swing on that horse, better barrier and more upside so confident he turns the tables and at his best, can win this clearly. Giving him a chance.
4 Bedouin Belle (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Lou Luciani trained filly who has had four runs back from a spell. Won her first two in pretty good fashion before a battling fifth to Deacalda. Bounced back with a solid enough second to the above average filly Catherine Wheels, who does look Stakes class, so I think that form reads alright. Just depends what’s left in the petrol tank.
7 Wakan Tanka (Bet Now: $23.00) is a veteran of 14 starts who is yet to greet the judge first, but is an honest type and is rarely far away from the action. Ran in a maiden here on March 30 when on speed and fighting on strongly but couldn’t quite finish it off when beaten narrowly by Ribbon Of Gold. Likely lands in an idea spot from the barrier and is a knockout chance.
Race 4. (16:10) Richard Bradley Birthday Handicap (Class One) 1000m
The gate is the big negative with 1 Finally French (Bet Now: $3.80) but the trial win was just too good to ignore. He hasn’t raced since December 1 in the Provincial Final here when down the track behind Father Nick, where he didn’t pull up 100% post race. Has been given a good break and absolutely loved the way he let down to win a Lark Hill trial a couple of weeks back. Just has to overcome the draw to go close to winning.
3 Lord Greystroke (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Neville Parnham trained three year old who resumed here last Wednesday when on speed throughout and looked to travel but when pressure was applied, not much was found and overall was disappointing when fifth to Stirling Estate, pulling up with Lacerations post race. He’s city class at his best. Hopefully he can show that here.
9 Blankenberge (Bet Now: $8.50) is a daughter of Hinchinbrook for Simon Miller who has had six starts and is yet to greet the judge first but hasn’t been far away of late, the latest run coming a couple of Wednesdays back here when a solid enough third to City Circle. That form doesn’t read too bad for a Class One and is in the right stable. Just needs luck in running.
Race 5. (16:40) DFO Perth Handicap (Class Three) 1200m
Just want a market push for 1 Unikat (Bet Now: $4.00) and he should be far too good for this lot. Adam Durrant trains this gelding, who resumes after a very good opening prep in the Spring to start his career, winning his first three races before being outclassed in the Fairetha. Finds a very winnable Class Three to resume in and loved the way he found the line under no pressure in his Lark Hill trial.
6 Mr Undercover (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Star Witness gelding first up. His overall record doesn’t read great but his ability is much better than what it says. Has a really good first up record and he was one of the standout performances at the Lark Hill trials on April 8. Good lead too that Pike is booked to ride and he does seem to get the best out of this horse. Big yard/market watch.
5 Saturia (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Paul Jordan trained mare who doesn’t have the greatest of winning records, but she has contested city racing most of her career and hasn’t been far away. Last run came over 1000m here over three weeks ago when on speed and just felt the pinch late when fourth to My Demi in a race where the form has been quite good. 1200m a risk, but hopefully for her supporters, she leads and finds the rail.
Race 6. (17:15) Mae Routledge's Birthday Celebration Handicap (Class One) 1400m
10 Divine Quest (Bet Now: $2.50) on top. Colin Webster trains this filly, who ran in a 1200m maiden here under two weeks ago where she got back to near last in the run before being presented wider and finishing off strongly to nab the handy maiden Magic Empire. This isn’t a strong Class One and from the barrier, she can sit closer in the run and is the one to beat.
6 Artie’s Jewels (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Karen Kersley trained gelding who has been quite good in both runs back from a break. The second of those runs came in the race mentioned above where he was back, wide with cover, and loomed to be a winning threat but just had too much to do. Tricky gate again, but hopefully won’t be giving away so much head start and can turn the tables.
Couldn’t back 12 Larking (Bet Now: $23.00) to win but for wider multiples, I’d include her. Was well specked at massive odds when resuming over 1200m here last Wednesday where she got back off a slow tempo and was forced to make a decent run but stuck to the task pretty well in defeat behind Forgotten Star. Similar tactics will be adopted here I think and could fill a first four spot.
Race 7. (17:45) Sheila Gwynne Classic 1400m
4 Lady Cosmology (Bet Now: $1.80) for me. Was keen on this filly when she resumed Charleson Classic and watching the replay, I’m still convinced she won. But the photo went the way of Electric Light. This filly has more improvement to come and up to 1400m, she looks really well placed and if she gets to the front and gets a cheap furlong, clearly the one to beat against these.
3 Electric Light (Bet Now: $4.60) is an Adam Durrant trained mare who got a well deserved Stakes win to her name when winning the Charleson Classic, with McGruddy pushing the button on the turn to gather momentum and that was the difference between winning and losing, just beating Lady Cosmology. Has improvement also, but not sure she has the improvement Lady Cosmology does.
1 Celebrity Dream (Bet Now: $6.00) is a mare who will love the step up to 1400m. Just found the 1200m too sharp in the Charleson, sitting last in the field of five and just couldn’t sprint quick enough when fourth to Electric Light. Up to 1400m is the big tick for her and she was the dominant mare during the Jungles Series through the Ascot Spring/Summer Carnival. Leading chance.
Race 8. (18:20) WA Sires Produce Stakes 1400m
3 Tinsnip…(Bet Now: $3.00) how didn’t he win the Karrakatta? Given a 12/10 steer from Knuckey and on the turn, he looked the winner when presented, and looked home, but was bloused right on the line by Dig Deep. I was on Tinsnip and partially filthy he didn’t win, but given the circumstances surrounding Dig Deep, can’t begrudge the win. Still, think Tinsnip can turn the tables.
Expecting much more aggressive tactics from Craig Staples aboard 8 Specialism (Bet Now: $4.20). Just looked in need of the run first up in the Gimcrack before racing in the Karrakatta where she was back in the run and made ground but never a really winning threat behind Dig Deep. Lead looks up for grabs and she was very effective when leading during the Spring.
5 Semigel (Bet Now: $8.50) deserves a crack at this level. Lou Luciani trains this filly, who was good here two back before going to Pinjarra when wide no cover on speed and despite that early burn, class came to the fore and she finished best to score. Can get the suck run behind the speed from the good draw. Lacks the class of some of these, but is hard fit and in good form.
Race 9. (18:50) Kirin Megumi Handicap (0MW) 1400m
4 Detango (Bet Now: $3.40) on top for me in the get out. Brett Pope trains this mare, who resumed over 1200m here where she got a fair way back off the speed and was never really likely but did make ground and her run wasn’t too bad in defeat. 2/3 second up and the lone defeat second up saw her on the worst part of the track. Draws to stalk the speed and the claim for Mollie Clark is a big tick.
1 New Time is an absolute beauty for the Jim Taylor stable resuming. He’s 11 years of age but still retains a healthy zest for racing, as we saw last prep where he ran honest races pretty much every time he stepped out. Has a really good first up record and has trialled up really well, better than what he has trialled the last couple of preps. Lands in front and will give his all.
10 Everything’s Sweet (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Not A Single Doubt filly resuming for the Peace stable. This girl hasn’t raced since October 7 at Northam when down the track and racing like a tired horse behind subsequent city performer Reveille. Trialled up okay at Lark Hill but I think the key to her could be a potential wet track because there is rain forecast. That could help her winning claims being enhanced.
