Nine races will be run and won at Doomben on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:33) Help A Neighbour Mdn Plate 1640m
Out to the mile, pretty keen on 4 Toucan Sam (Bet Now: $3.60) running well here. Good from the back two starts ago over 1400m at Eagle Farm before going back to 1350m here when back near last in the run and really finishing off his race strongly when a close up fourth. He’s looking like a horse that will appreciate more ground, which is what he gets here.
5 City Smart (Bet Now: $2.80) looks one of the leading chances. Very good late over 1350m here two starts back behind Hopeful Star before going to the mile at the Sunny Coast where he had to lump 60kg and worked home strongly late despite never being a winning threat. He’s knocking on the door. Just hope he can settle closer in the run.
6 Monster Of Power (Bet Now: $3.70) is one I’d be including in multiples. Brian Smith trains this three year old, who comes through the 1350m maiden here two weeks ago where he was off the speed and didn’t really quicken, but stayed on and was solid enough behind Blackboots. He’s been around the 1300m-1400m distance range this prep. Stepping up to 1600m should suit.
Race 2. (12:08) Millers Swim School (bm90) 2220m
3 Brocson (Bet Now: $3.90) for me in a thin race. On the seven day back up for Mick Lakey after racing here last Saturday over 2000m when coming back in trip. Had to lump the 59.5kg and stayed on well in defeat when second to Populist, albeit 2.3L from the winner. Gets really good weight relief this time around and has run well on the back up before despite two back being a run on the back up and he failed badly.
Trevor Thomas has 5 Strike Sika (Bet Now: $8.50) flying and is the one to beat on form. Slogged it out best to win over 2400m at Beaudesert two back before racing at this track/distance where he was the rank outsider but he ran a beauty behind Illwendo, running second, beaten four lengths, but spanked the rest. That form has to read well for this.
2 Boom Boom Epic (Bet Now: $5.50) is gradually getting towards peak fitness. Comes through the Illwendo race from two weeks ago here where she had the sweet sit in behind and tried hard, but the sit/sprint set up of the race didn’t suit and she whacked away for a well beaten fourth. Her best is good enough. Just haven’t seen it for a while.
Race 3. (12:43) Healthcare Workers Hcp 1350m
The safe option looks to be 1 Tumbler Ridge (Bet Now: $1.80). Been up a little while for Steve O’Dea but gee he’s holding his form. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago when getting into a lovely spot just off the speed under Boris, was out in the clear early to get into his work and was just far too good. Holds his form, likely wins again.
2 Broken Hero (Bet Now: $3.30) is on the seven day back up for Neville Stewart after racing over 1200m here last Saturday when just off the speed and battling away really well in defeat behind two smart types in Minjee and Snappy Reply. Think a rise to 1350m looks idea, should land near the speed and gets the Blinkers on first time, plus Brad Stewart remains on.
3 Mishani Epic (Bet Now: $5.50) was a surprise winner two back at big odds prior to racing in the Tumbler Ridge race from two weeks ago where he got back in the run but around Doomben, getting that far back for a two year old and trying to win is near impossible. If Adin Thompson can take advantage of the gate, he can bounce back.
Race 4. (13:18) Tab Mdn 1350m
2 Angus The Black (Bet Now: $2.50 SPECIAL ODDS) is crying out for further and that is what he gets here. Has been at 1200m at his past two and has worked home strongly each time, the latest being here two weeks ago behind Kusama. Think up to 1350m is clearly ideal and if he can settle closer in the run, perhaps a pair or two, he’ll be very dangerous.
6 Hearts Denied (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Rob Heathcoate gelding that comes through the Kusama race from two weeks ago where he was nearer the speed throughout and tried hard but couldn’t finish it, settling for fifth. On that run, hard to see him beating Kusama, but he’s got more racing style and can steal a break if ridden to advantage.
8 Our Omen (Bet Now: $35.00) is a Mick Mair trained three year that had trialled up okay prior to debuting on his home track at the Sunny Coast when back in the run and chased the line okay without being a winning threat. Like him up to 1350m and from the inside gate, hopefully can sit a pair or two closer in the run.
Race 5. (13:53) Bernborough Ascot Hcp 1640m
He’s flying at the moment is 2 Get Stuck In (Bet Now: $1.50), who has won his past two and is flying at the moment. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where Nothdurft walked them in front, running his first 1000m in around 63, so he was entitled to dash away late and that he did. He can sit and launch, so he doesn’t have to lead to win.
Gary Duncan has 3 Magnufighter (Bet Now: $6.50) going really well. Tough win over 1800m at the Gold Coast before coming back to the mile here two weeks back and tried hard but the sit/sprint set up isn’t his go. But to his credit, he stuck on and was good when second to Get Stuck In. If it’s a more genuine tempo, he can take this out.
It looks a race in two but if there is a blow out it could be 6 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $10,00). His run at Doomben last time out was okay and was probably better than it looks and although i can’t see him turning the tables on the favourite he can definitely run in the placings at a good price.
Race 6. (14:32) Lexus Plate (c3) 1110m
Looks pretty straight forward here with the Tony Gollan filly 14 Niedorp (Bet Now: $1.35), who was backed as if unbeatable when resuming over 1050m here two weeks ago and once she landed a plum spot near the speed, it was a case of thank you linesmen and thank you ball boys. She spanked them and ran time. You’d think fitter and up in trip, she’ll be better. Should win.
11 Soubrette (Bet Now: $13.00) with fresh legs, back to 1110m, looks the key threat. Sharp winner two back at this track/distance before stepping up to 1200m and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off when third. Has had around a month between runs and back in trip from a soft gate, she’ll give Niedorp a decent race here.
10 I Am Venus (Bet Now: $15.00) is crying out for further so I think the extra 110m will suit her. All three runs this time in have come over 1000m, the latest at the Sunny Coast when off the speed and closing nicely to run second to Gin ‘N’ Bitters. She does seem a big track horse, so not sure if Doomben suits, but she’s going pretty well.
Race 7. (15:12) Roku Gin Hcp 1110m
Jump and run please 7 The Move (Bet Now: $2.40). Did plenty of work on speed over 1200m here two weeks ago but despite that kicked on strongly and looked home, only to be nabbed late by Okeechobee. To me, he is a jump and run type that is suited to short course racing so the 1110m here looks ideal and will give an almighty sight.
The class of 2 Sugar Boom (Bet Now: $2.50) will carry her a long towards a first up victory. Quality filly for Tony Gollan that resumes, having not raced since the Spring/Summer, where she was very impressive, highlighted by her win in the Mode Plate before taking on the Mares in the Nudgee and was part of a mad speed battle in a total forgive. Trials have been sharp, as you’d expect, and 1110m first up is fine.
5 Bold Style (Bet Now: $8.00) looks the horse who could upset the two heavily backed favourites in the race. His run at Doomben last start was good when running fourth and the small field here should suit. He will get every chance from the barrier and could finish over the top of them.
Race 8. (15:52) Xxxx Dry (bm85) 1200m
11 Starvirgo (Bet Now: $4.60) is a key threat for me. Have been keen on him all prep and he looks ready to go for this. Part of a four way speed battle first up in a total forgive before racing in a Class 6 here two weeks ago where he was given a peach steer by Du Plessis and tried hard but no match late for Macewen. Think back to a Handicap, with upside, he can go one better.
3 Enterprise Prince (Bet Now: $4.80) is a son of Rothesay for Mick Lakey that resumes. He’s above average and can certainly take this out, but the market will be the guide given he is first up and comes here off just one soft trial. But to counter that, the form from last prep reads pretty much better than anything else engaged here.
This is one of the easier races that 1 Invincible Al (Bet Now: $9.50) has contested in some time, so for me, I think he’s a definite knockout chance. Ran last Saturday in an open handicap and nothing really went his way in a total forgive behind Mishini Hustler. Draws wide, but looks to be good speed, so he’ll get his chance.
Race 9. (16:32) Racecourse Village (bm72) 1350m
6 Magic Fox (Bet Now: $4.50) is bursting to win one. Was good late first up at the Gold Coast behind Motion Granted before racing at this track/distance a few weeks ago where he was tardy away and got back to near last in the run, which pretty much sealed his fate when third to Parko. If he sit closer in the run, he’s the likely winner.
9 Lashoni (Bet Now: $9.00) is three weeks between runs for Tony Gollan since racing at this track/distance where she eased back from the wide gate but loved the way she finished her race off when third to the Stakes performed Sofie’s Gold Class. She’s flying this girl and the key to her is having a little break between runs. She’s very good with fresh legs.
What is doing with 16 Written With Ease? (Bet Now: $18.00) Gee she’s been disappointing this prep after promising so much. Did work from the wide gate though three weeks ago here so be a bit forgiving of that run behind Sofie’s Gold Class. Her best is clearly good enough to take this out so that’s why I’m including her but she’s into last chance territory.
