17/5/2025 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Flemington, Andrew Ramsden Stakes day

Nine races have been set down for Flemington on Saturday, headlined by the Andrew Ramsden (2800m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

If 6 One Hard Lady (Bet Now:  $SP.00) handles the straight course and 1100m, she wins again, makes it 4/4 and connections should be thinking about The Kosciuszko. Her three starts/wins have been dynamic, the latest on Albury Cup Day where she was a good thing on paper and duly won. Think she’s very good and IMO only bad luck beats her.

3 Skipjack (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is hard to beat. Moody/Coleman trained three year old that was on speed throughout last start and showed good ticker late to fend them off and win. He looks a decent short course horse at this level, he should lead and take running down.

9 Grinzinger Sun (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is racing like 1100m down the straight will suit. She ran a few weeks back at The Valley over 1200m where she got back off the speed and while she was never a winning threat, she did make up ground and was good late. Firmer footing suits, and 1100m down the straight should be fine. Knockout hope.

4 Gable (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a key threat if he can settle closer. He ran here in the Anzac Day Stakes where he got back to near last in the run and made up headway without threatening. If he can take up a more forward position, he can win.

2 Warrior Smile (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes through the Anzac Day Stakes at this track/distance where he attempted to lead throughout and he gave a decent kick from the front but just couldn’t quite see it through, feeling the pinch late behind Highvol. If he gets front end control, he’ll run a much improved race.

5 Maldini (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a key threat. He was a strong winner two back at Pakenham before going to the Anzac Day Stakes here when off speed and held up at times but that said, he did have his chance in behind Highvol. His best is good enough tot ake this out IMO.

10 Quiseen (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is one of the leading contenders for Archie Alexander. She has won three of her past four, the last two. Latest win was at Sandown where she gave them a start and a beating in a very impressive performance. Hard to knock the way she’s racing.

12 Star Sirius (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is one of the hardest to beat. She ran a few weeks ago at Morphettville when getting a decent run in transit near the speed and was there to win but just found one better in Beauty Rising. That was her first run in a month so with upside/improvement to come, she takes beating.

6 Zebella (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is three weeks between runs for Phillip Stokes since landing on speed at The Valley and she tried hard but just couldn’t quite see it through behind Excess. Has run well down the straight before and is in with a shout.

7 Kalkallo (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is hard to beat off his win two weeks ago at Caulfield where he gave them a start and a beating, knuckling down with purpose late to wear down Rue De Royale. Upside/improvement to come, he is one of the leading contenders.

3 Rue De Royale (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a little while between wins but is racing well for Team McEvoy. For a few strides, he looked the winner a fortnight back at Caulfield but just couldn’t quite see it through, nabbed late by Kalkallo. He was a few weeks between runs there so with that under the belt, he appeals.

1 Super Photon (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is an interesting runner. Kiwi raider for Stephen Marsh that comes down under off the back of a win at Te Rapa where he gave them a start and a beating, knuckling down with purpose late. Good test here, but keen to see how he goes.

4 Oxford Blue (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is hard to beat if there is petrol left in the tank after his run two weeks ago at Caulfield where he did all the work on speed and was entitled to knock right up but he only got a stitch very late. I think with a better run in transit, he’s one of the hardest to beat.

2 Somewhere (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 2000m after racing over the mile in the Adelaide Guineas a fortnight back when near the speed and he tried hard but had no answers late for a quality filly in On Display. Hard fit and up to 2000m, he is a leading contender.

3 Stylish Secret (Bet Now:  $SP.00) ran second two weeks back at Caulfield. He was wide with cover throughout before angling wider and he looked the winner when the button was pushed but he was nabbed on the peg by Rogan. Leading contender off that effort.

11 King Zephyr (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a beauty for Grahame Begg and very keen to see how he goes here. He was a strong winner over 1400m here on Anzac Day, sitting wide throughout but it mattered not as he made an absolute mess of them. He’s destined for Group l company…back to 1200m I find interesting but I love him.

2 Aviatress (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks better suited at this level vs Group l company, where she ran in the Sangster a few weeks back. She had a good run in transit and tried hard but just lacked the quality to go with them late in the piece. Back a fair bit in overall depth, she’s good enough to bounce back.

14 Our Last Cash (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has run well down the straight previously and his best is good enough to threaten. He resumed in the Wagga Town Plate where he got back and made up minimal headway behind Compelling Truth. Fitter, down in the weights, he’s in the mix for exotics.

12 Berkshire Breeze (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to be rated as the one to beat. He is a few weeks between runs since contesting the Mornington Cup and in the run, he looked all over the winner, but when let down, he just whacked in the run to the line. Back to Flemington and up in trip, he’s clearly the one to beat.

5 Virtuous Circle (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is capable. He looked to be trucking in the run in the Warrnambool Cup last start but when asked for the effort, the wheels started spinning so forgive and forget. Firmer footing, Flemington, 2800m, he’s more than capable of being in the finish.

4 True Marvel (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes through the Warrnambool Cup where he got back in the run and while he was never a winning threat, he did make up ground and was pretty good in defeat I thought behind Smokin Romans. Likely has eyes on jumping, but he’ll stay all day and be strong at the end.

9 Verdad (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has earned a crack at 100 grade for Robbie Griffiths after a win at Mornington where he had to lump the big weight but class came to the fore late, he knuckled down and was too good. Good test here, but think he can measure up.

13 El Rocko (Bet Now:  $SP.00) steps up to 1600m but is racing really well at present for John McArdle after a dominant win over 1500m a few weeks back at The Valley. He lobbed into a beaut spot in transit and was there to put the race to bed. Sometimes he doesn’t but that day he did and was dominant. He appeals.

2 Holymanz (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has been freshened up since the Golden Mile at Bendigo when back in the run and failed to get involved when down the track behind Regal Zeus. He does have a good record at Flemington and a tick over jumpout was a good piece of work so keen to see how he goes.

5 Le Zebra (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is knocking on the door after his effort three weeks ago at The Valley when off speed and loomed to win but just couldn’t quite finish the job. Firmer deck, 1800m, bigger track, I say he takes beating.

9 Lauding (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks suited up to 1800m after resuming over the mile three weeks back at The Valley where he found a very shifty/sticky track and couldn’t really pick his feet up when it counted but he stayed on and was far from disgraced in defeat. Fitter and up in trip, he can threaten.

14 Samuel Langhorne (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is first up for Mick Kent so it will be interesting how he goes here. He hasn’t raced since Feb 1 over 2400m at Sandown when off speed and failed to get involved behind Pure Grunt. Jumped out well enough and fresh at 1800m signals intent.

BEST BET: Race One Number 6 One Hard Lady

NEXT BEST: Race Six Number 11 King Zephyr

LONG SHOT: Race Two Numnber 4 Gable
