17/1/2019 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Gosford, Gosford Cup day

Gosford will host their biggest raceday on Thursday where it is Gosford Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

It’s a bit of a nothing race IMO so I’ll go with a horse that’s resuming, 3 Flagpoles (Bet Now: $7.50). This girl has won two of her six career outings and has shown a bit of promise as a stayer. Hasn’t raced since mid September when down the track at Warwick Farm behind stablemate and the Group l performed High Bridge. Closed off alright I thought in her trial and this race has no depth to it.

4 Zavance (Bet Now: $3.10) is a daughter of Mossman for Team Snowden who has done a good job in her first campaign. Was a month between runs when racing over 1350m at Wyong where she settled back nearer the inside before Wolfgram got the split on the filly and when she got clear air, she dashed and won impressively. Bit harder here, but in the right stable.

2 Judge Judi (Bet Now: $2.40) is a Star Witness mare for Kim Waugh who resumed at Kembla Grange and I thought she was very good in defeat when a narrow second to Myprayer. The margin would have been more narrow but in the second or third last stride, she slipped and lost a bit of momentum when trying to come back and win. 2/2 second up and the 1600m is ideal. She’s not a long shot, but they look the only three winning hopes.

8 Foxpack (Bet Now: $3.50) for me. John O’Shea trains this Foxwedge filly, who debuted on the Kensington track on December 21 where she was well backed, attempted to sit on speed throughout and win, but she couldn’t quite finish the race off when fourth to Unify. Think the depth here is a touch weaker, should hold a good spot from the barrier and is one of the hardest to beat.

5 Schnapps (Bet Now: $2.80) is the interesting one. Talented type for Brad Widdup who has threatened and teased to be a metro class horse, but still yet to put a win on the board. Resumed at Canterbury and for mine he had his chance behind Matowi. Was first up though and only beaten 0.8L. Got upside, but in three career starts, he has let the punters down.

3 Lifetime Quest (Bet Now: $6.50) is an Exceed And Excel gelding for Kris Lees that debuted at Scone on December 29 and was pretty good in defeat when second to impressive winner Hidalgo. The form doesn’t read too bad, he’s in the right stable and clearly has upside so despite the rise in depth, I think he could well run a positive race, and hopefully at decent odds.

I’ll tip 1 Sir Harry (Bet Now: $6.00) on suspicion. Former kiwi that makes his Australian debut for Chris Waller. He only had the one run in NZ, which came over the Waverley mile where he sat off the pace and chased hard when a narrow second. The overall form out of that maiden is okay-ish. Now with Waller, on first look I thought his trial was ordinary, but he was back and did respond somewhat when asked for an effort. Hoping he’s a race day animal.

9 Monterey Lad (Bet Now: $3.80) is a John Thompson trained gelding who caught the eye first up at Nowra when back and working home. I thought he was a moral next time out at Canberra but he was a touch flat and overall quite disappointing in the straight when third to Ruby Red Socks. Potentially a third up bounce back up to the mile, but I can’t get the disappointing last start run out of my mind to back him to win.

8 I’m Kate (Bet Now: $9.00) is an interesting runner. Was hard to beat I thought in a weak Gunnedah maiden on Tuesday but the stable elects to run here. Strong debut at Hawkesbury behind a subsequent city winner before going to this track/distance where she had little to no luck behind Stealth Sniper. Have to respect the stable run here in a stronger race compared to the one on Tuesday.

I think this run will tell us if 4 Laburnum (Bet Now: $2.00) is a woman or a girl. She has promised a fair bit since day one and gee she’s been disappointing. Was really keen on her when she resumed on the Kensington track at Randwick and she was well backed, but for mine I thought she was disappointing when fourth to Royal Witness. Definite threat here, but I’d rather watch her win than back her.

6 Vinci Lady (Bet Now: $4.50) has to step up a fair in depth but all you can do is win and that is what she did on debut when winning over 1000m here. Led all the way under Jason Collett and despite getting the wobbles on the turn, she straightened up and was a pretty good winner, with the time not being that great relative to the day. She will be included in exotics.

There is a bit of a tail to this race behind the top two. Next best would probably be 3 Joy For Us (Bet Now: $8.00), a Kim Waugh trained mare who is first up. Showed good promise in four runs during the Winter, and has some decent form next to her name. Looked to trial up really well at Wyong recently and overall, this isn’t the strongest race going around at all.

Toughest test to date but he’s just airborne is 3 Easy Eddie (Bet Now: $4.80). Loved the way he toughed it out to win two back at Warwick Farm before racing on the Kensington track at Randwick where he looked a good thing on paper and he won accordingly under a confident steer from Robbie Dolan. Seems much better with a bit of give in the track but he’s very reliable on a firm surface.

2 Tactical Advantage (Bet Now: $3.40) has to be respected. Was really keen on him when he raced in the Falvelon at Doomben three weeks ago but just had too much to do from the back when sixth behind Fiery Heights. When the leader is running 33.36 last 600m, those from the back had no chance of winning. He’s got a sharp turn of foot when at his best, so giving him another chance.

6 Demerara (Bet Now: $3.50) is a quality mare for James Cummings who deserves a blacktype win and she gets another great chance. She ran in the Nudgee at Doomben last time, hoping to get that win, but bumped into stablemate Manicure, with that form being well and truly ticked off in the Magic Millions Mares race on Saturday. She is a very good horse on the fresh side so with the extra few days off, she’s a definite chance. Not a long shot, but they look the main three.

Giving one last chance to 7 Articus (Bet Now: $15.00) . He’s been very good overall this time in but just a couple of question marks on his last two. Copped interference in the Villiers but was never a winning threat behind Sky Boy before going to the Gold Coast where he had abrasions to both hind bumpers in a forgive I think behind Prioritise. Soft gate, fast run 2100m, he’ll get his chance to showcase just how well he’s come back.

9 Roman Son (Bet Now: $3.00) should just about be ready to show his best for Richard Freedman. He comes through the Summer Cup at Randwick where he got a fair way back in the run but closed off strongly despite having to duck and weave his way through in the straight. Fourth up, he should be hard fit and the form around him the two runs prior does give him a serious hope.

1 Fabrizio (Bet Now: $12.00) is just the unknown. Anything near his old form and he’d be too good for this lot but it’s been such a long time since he has done anything positive. Could the key be stepping up in trip? Went quick in the Villiers and actually stuck on alright in defeat behind Sky Boy. Tick over trial was good, should lead and he’ll give a sight I’m sure. Just depends what’s left at the end.

If 2 Skyray (Bet Now: $2.80) produces his best, he should be too good for this lot. Really good effort two back at Warwick Farm when beaten narrowly by Gongs before racing on the Kensington track where he was back in an on pace dominated affair and he couldn’t come on behind Samadoubt. Good record at Gosford and this is clearly a drop in grade for him. Tommy back on a tick I think as well.

1 It’s So Obvious (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Greg McFarlane trained mare who had trialled up well at Hawkesbury prior to resuming in the Prelude of this race back on December 28 where she was under pressure and seemingly gone at one stage but Robbie Dolan lifted her and she grabbed the win near the peg. Draws much better this time around and isn’t badlky in at the weights after the claim.

5 Nic’s Vendetta (Bet Now: $5.00) is a big watch here. He resumed over 1000m on the Kensington track at Randwick where he was specked in early betting and on face value, he was disappointing, but was found to be 2/5 lame post race. He is a noted second up specialist and the last two second up wins have come at city grade, so I think he’s a definite market watch.

NEXT BEST: Race Five Number 3 Easy Eddie

LONG SHOT: Race Six Number 7 Articus
