A rich raceday has been assembled for Caulfield this Saturday, with VOBIS Gold Day producing a cracking program. The weather is overcast, the track is good (3) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:20) : TIXSTAR Marathon Series Final (90) 4000m:

Back Me: 4 Dane Hussler (Best Odds: $4.00) comes here after spanking her rivals over 3600m during the Oakbank Carnival. She could not have been ridden better by Matty Neilson there and she was strong, so 4000m will be no issue and she has a turn of foot.
Big Danger: 5 Sly Romance (Best Odds: $2.90) just sat and waited in the staying race on Mornington Cup Day before letting down and finishing best in a real slog to the line. Meets a similar field here and I don’t think anything from that race will turn the tables here, so on that basis, he has to be a chance.
Roughie: 1 Jileks Spur (Best Odds: $10.00) hasn’t raced for nearly a month since running behind Bayanova over 3000m at Ladbrokes Park. He has been kept up to the mark with a couple of trials over the sticks since, but he was scratched from a jumps race on Monday and he did run well in this race last year.

Race Two (12:55) : Vale Phil Sly VOBIS Gold Ingot 1200m:

Back Me: 2 If Not Now When (Best Odds: $4.40) won the $100,000 VOBIS race at Cranbourne last time out, aided by a lovely ride from Mick Dee, who has won two from two on this daughter of Artie Schiller. Little suspect at running the 1200m right out, but she is trained on the track, hard fit and has winning form beside her name.
Big Danger: 3 Urban Ruler (Best Odds: $2.90) has been the best backed runner in not only this race but perhaps for the entire meeting. He produced a lovely turn of foot from the back to win on debut at Ballarat in a race that on paper didn’t look strong, but he was impressive, and I’ll respect the market support.
Roughie: 11 Summer Glen (Best Odds: $6.50) comes through the Gold Rush at Bendigo where she attempted to lead all the way but just felt the pinch late when a close up third to If Not Now When. Froggy jumps aboard now and draws beautifully.

Race Three (13:30) : VOBIS Gold Distaff 1400m:

Back Me: 8 French Emotion (Best Odds: $2.15) is on the back up from last Saturday at Sandown where she was enormous in defeat behind stablemate She’s Miss Divine given she was three and four wide no cover for the trip. Rawiller remains and just only needs a slice of luck from the barrier to take a power of beating here.
Big Danger: 2 Scarlet Billows (Best Odds: $3.30) drops in grade after running a close up seventh to Flamberge in the William Reid (1200m). Massive drop in depth here and given her record, she does look so well placed, especially from gate one with Yendall riding.
Roughie: 5 Marli Magic (Best Odds: $21.00) was given a freshen up before running at Mornington last time out where she got back in the run and just looked a little run off her legs behind impressive winner Mefnooda. Up to 1400m is more her go, and if she can sit closer in the run, she is tough and will battle it out strongly late I feel. Could be one at odds to include.

Race Four (14:10) : VOBIS Gold Mile 1600m:

Back Me: 4 Sabkhat (Best Odds: $5.50) trialled really well prior to resuming at Rosehill three weeks back where he closed off nicely late when running third to stablemate Federal. He loomed to win the race but just petered out of it late, so he will take enormous benefit from that and he does have a fantastic second up record, so he looks one of the major contenders.
Big Danger: 3 Entre Nous (Best Odds: $5.00) has been given a slight freshen up since winning the Wangaratta Cup last time out, aided by a peach steer from apprentice Mitchell Aitken. He has been a mode of consistency for some time and the mile is his pet distance. Hardest test to date here, but it’s hard to knock his form and looks a great each-way chance.
Roughie: 8 Recalculate (Best Odds: $14.00) sat on speed last time out at Ladbrokes Park and just couldn’t quite finish it off when a close up second to impressive winner Haradafull. Nick Hall jumps on and his patient hands will suit this horse, who is a touch suspect at running out a strong mile.

Race Five (14:45) : IRT VOBIS Gold Reef 1600m:

Back Me: 7 Approved Anger (Best Odds: $10.00) wasn’t really in the market last time out at Ladbrokes Park but gee he produced a lovely turn of foot when asked by Brad Rawiller and he cleared right out to be home a couple of above average types. Bred to eat up the trip and beyond, and that was only his third start, so there should be good upside left.
Big Danger: 10 Bengal Cat (Best Odds: $3.90) was very impressive last Saturday at Ladbrokes Park, aided by a lovely steer from Tom Sadler, and the win was one of the best on the program. I like that she is on the seven day back up and only has to overcome the wide gate to be a threat.
Big Danger: 5 Unbreakable (Best Odds: $15.00) is on the back up from racing in the Mornington Guineas (1500m) where he stuck to the task pretty well I thought when running a 2.3L sixth to stablemate Tarquin. He is only third up here, so he should have a bit of upside left and the first up win against the older horses at Pakenham was full of merit.

Race Six (15:25) : Owner.racing.com VOBIS Gold Sprint 1200m:

Back Me: Finding it hard to see anything other than a win for 1 The Quarterback (Best Odds: $2.50). He produced a brilliant finishing burst to win the Newmarket (1200m) before going to the William Reid (1200m) where he closed off hard behind Flamberge despite missing the start by nearly five lengths. Regular rider jumps back on now, and given the set weights scale, he just looks so well placed.
Big Danger: 12 Almighty Girl (Best Odds: $4.00) is a very good filly for Mitch Beer and Max Hinton. She has been freshened up since winning the Typhoon Tracy (1200m) at Moonee Valley, savaging the line to grab Group l performer Secret Agenda on the peg. Third horse won a Stakes race and performed well during the Championships, so the form reads very well and there is just enormous upside.
Roughie: 4 Refulgent (Best Odds: $61.00) is a tough, tough galloper for Darren Weir who hasn’t raced since early August last year where he won over the Flemington mile. 1200m is short of his best, but he has a touch of class about him and with these Darren Weir runners, they can sprint well fresh.

Race Seven (16:05) : VOBIS Gold Heath 2000m:

Back Me: 12 Vianden (Best Odds: $26.00) is on the back up from last Saturday over the Morphettville mile where he defied the on speed slow tempo to work home strongly for third behind in form galloper Mihany. Up to 2000m is some query, but he is on the back up and has good upside.
Big Danger: 1 Bondeiger (Best Odds: $3.20) looks ready now. Wasn’t suited first up behind Nevis before going to the 2000m at Mornington where he worked home well late to run fourth go Velox. Third up, so he should be cherry ripe and this does look his race.
Roughie: 5 Adirondack (Best Odds: $5.50) ran over 2400m here three weeks ago and attempted to pinch it from the front but just tired late behind High Church. He will be very strong at the end of 2000m here and is hard fit.

Race Eight (16:45) : TROA Anniversary Vase 1400m:

Back Me: 14 Inspector (Best Odds: $21.00) resumed in the Hareeba (1200m) and was wide throughout yet made up very good ground in a race that was dominated by those near the upside. Step up in trip is perfect and this time draws to get good cover and ambush late.
Big Danger: 7 Yesterday’s Songs (Best Odds: $5.00) also comes through the Victoria Handicap where he got too race back in the run in a race where on speed was advantaged. He is better than that, so if he can sit closer in transit, he can definitely bounce back.
Roughie: 16 Master Reset (Best Odds: $13.00) has been given a little freshen up since resuming in the Mildura Cup where he was well backed and only a Dean Yendall gem on Gingerboy beat him. That horse has run well since so the form reads well and he is unbeaten in three second up outings.

Race Nine (17:20) : Racing Victoria Off The Track Plate (78) 1100m:

Back Me: 11 Ruettiger (Best Odds: $6.00) is a very good horse that resumes for Team Freedman. He had two runs in the Spring, both resulting in wins, including one here. Hasn’t caught my attention at the jump outs, but on ability and form, he looks one of the hardest to beat.
Big Danger: 8 Sunday Escape (Best Odds: $6.00) resumed in a six horse field on his home track and ran last behind Illustrious Lad, who went on to win again at Morphettville. He has since been to the trials and looked to go well behind the trial star Petits Filous, so that is suspect, but the way he went suggests he can bounce back.
Roughie: 10 Danger Close (Best Odds: $31.00) has been frustrating to follow for some time, but he does face one of the easier fields he has seen in some time. He didn’t look happy on the soft track last start at Pakenham when making up ground late behind It’s One. Newitt back on from gate, hot speed, hard fit…he could be a knockout.
