Eight races will be run and won at Belmont this Saturday for Hyperion Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:33) Quayclean Plate 1300m
Looks a race in two but just leaning the way of 1 Kelly’s Callisto (Bet Now: $2.25). Ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where Smith had the gelding up near the speed, putting the pressure on because he knew he was on a tough horse and that is how it panned out late as he outgunned the well backed fav. Takes on another good one here but I’m confident he can get the job done.
2 Special Reward (Bet Now: $1.85) was Winx like odds when debuting here last Wednesday and while he didn’t beat much, and the clock said it was nothing flash, visually, it was very impressive. Did it comfortably from the front and never really looked like getting beat. More depth here but he does look quite promising.
5 To Rise Again (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Blackfriars gelding for Colin Webster who debuted last Monday at Northam where he was wide no cover throughout and just did too much work in the run but I thought he stuck on really well in defeat behind Nickel Queen. If he can get cover this time around, he’ll take some beating.
Race 2. (15:13) Tabtouch Handicap 1000m
Looks a lovely race for 2 Pearl Trade (Bet Now: $2.90). This filly resumed at this track/distance a fortnight back where she had the suck run on the rail off the pace and she was never going to beat Fabergino, but she worked home quite strongly to run second. No horse of that class here and with natural improvement, she looks the one.
5 Danny George (Bet Now: $5.00) is a quality son of Demerit that resumes for the Brett Pope team. This bloke had a three run Autumn prep to kick off the career, winning his first two in very impressive fashion before getting too far back at Ascot before being tipped out. Resumes with no trials but he is a big watch.
4 Another Demon (Bet Now: $6.50) is the real unknown. Helen Harding trains this three year old, who smashed the clock when bolting up last Monday at Northam, his first run in over two months. More depth here, but gets right down in the weights with the claim and I think back to 1000m will really suit him.
Race 3. (15:53) Edda Unewisse Handicap (1MW) 1600m
3 Aconite (Bet Now: $5.50) gets the nod for me. Three weeks between runs for the Brett Pope yard since scoring a rather impressive win at this track/distance where she had the suck run near the rail before Peter Hall angled her into clear and she let down hard late to get the win. Claim helps her cause and this race, overall, isn’t strong.
9 Send My Love (Bet Now: $4.80) is an Alan Matthews trained filly who was specked at longer odds when resuming here last Wednesday and I think the little plunge would have come off had she not layed in badly. That clearly cost her the win when second to Freo. Bubble cheekers on to sharpen her up, she should run well.
5 Campaign (Bet Now: $6.50) is the very interesting runner. Former Chris Waller galloper making his WA debut for the Chris Gangemi team. He had shown some promise when trained in NSW, but probably not going well enough to warrant a spot in the Sydney stable. Comes here and if he brought his best, he’s in the game.
Race 4. (16:29) Furphy Handicap (72+) 1200m
1 Enticing Star…(Bet Now: $1.20) need we saw anymore? The rising star of WA racing who is looking to make it seven from seven. Yep, she’s probably not beating much but the times are saying she’s something very special, with her win two back revealing she ran late splits that would measure up in a Group l. She’ll continue the picket fence.
2 Max Almighty (Bet Now: $6.50) is a rising eight year old for Alan Matthews that is going in near career best form. He ran third to Enticing Star here two weeks ago and arguably was a little unlucky not to finish closer, getting held up when building momentum. Won’t win but can definitely fill a place here.
5 Star Glitter (Bet Now: $71.00) is on the seven day back up for the Neville Parnham team after racing here last Saturday where he just got a mile out of his ground but he actually made up okay ground late in the piece behind River Dance. Has run well on the quick back up before and I can see him filling a minor spot.
Race 5. (17:05) Iron Jack Handicap (1MW) 1600m
Barring bad luck, 6 Red Army (Bet Now: $1.75) should be taking care of this lot. Lot to like about his win last Monday at Northam. Yes, he had the suck run behind the speed, but he still had to put them away and he did it emphatically. Awkward draw to overcome but I’ll leave that in the very capable hands of Pike.
5 My Grace (Bet Now: $12.00) is a stablemate of Red Army who is just over two weeks between runs since resuming over 1200m here where she was a notable drifter in betting and while she didn’t win, her effort wasn’t too bad. She just took an eternity to get going, so I like the step up to the mile. Should suit her.
9 Athlete (Bet Now: $27.00) is on the seven day back up for the Neville Parnham team after racing over 1400m here last Saturday where he got well back off the tempo and just couldn’t come on at all behind Sovereign Trade. Like that he is on the quick turnaround and stepping out to the 1600m. Doubt he wins, but perhaps a first four spot.
Race 6. (17:40) Hyperion Stakes 1600m
See no reason to jump off 3 Material Man (Bet Now: $1.80). He was crunched in betting when resuming in the Belmont Sprint a fortnight back and aided by a peach from Lucy, the star gelding proved too good. Up to the mile with the run will only be beneficial, maps well again…you’d think only bad luck beats him.
1 Pounamu (Bet Now: $3.90) looks the only threat. He was set a huge task in the Belmont Sprint, sitting back near last in a slowly run affair. Did a remarkable job I thought to run a close up third to Material Man. He’ll be the horse to beat in a fortnight I suspect…just thinking one more run before jumping on.
4 Gatting (Bet Now: $15.00) ran fourth to Material Man in the Belmont Sprint and his effort was gallant. He came off the bit on the turn and was seemingly going nowhere but he picked up and was really good to run fourth. He’ll be better as the distances increase. Doubt he wins, but I think he definitely runs top three.
Race 7. (18:15) Mumm Champagne Handicap (66+) 2100m
6 Come Play With Me (Bet Now: $2.40) should be winning this. Ran over 2200m here a fortnight back where Pike had him in a lovely spot just off the pace and once he popped into the clear, it was game over and he won as he pleased. Back 100m in trip no issue for mine and I think he just has to hold his form to win again.
7 Elegant Blast (Bet Now: $8.00) ran second to Come Play With Me in that race mentioned above. She was a little unlucky not to finish closer, getting held up a touch as Come Play With Me was off and gone for the prize. I think the drop back to 2100m will suit this girl nicely and I think with clear air, she can get closer to the top tip…not sure she wins.
15 Montagna (Bet Now: $10.00) is a real thinker for Steve Wallace but his record is reading pretty well and he deserves a crack at Saturday grade. Won at this track/distance last Wednesday and the way he was bolting behind them, he looked as if he’d win by 10. Ended up only winning by a half length. Gets the suck run again and down in the weights.
Race 8. (18:50) Fifth Leg Handicap (72+) 1400m
I’ll take a chance on quality mare 2 Fontainebleu (Bet Now: $7.50), who is resuming here for Lindsey Smith. This girl had a pretty solid Summer Carnival, placing in several Stakes races before being tipped out. Has a pretty good fresh record and her two trials leading in have been more than encouraging for mine.
6 Final Salute (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Not A Single Doubt gelding that resumes for Team Williams. If the track remains to have genuine give, I’ll probably put him on top. He hasn’t raced since mid November when finishing down the track behind Trap For Fools, and we know how good that form reads now. Two nice trials leading in and Pike rides.
12 Mosseratti (Bet Now: $18.00) is a handy stayer that resumes for Cliff Green. I think whatever he does here, he will improve on, but gee he looks wound up to run well fresh, given he’s had three trials to prepare, the latest seeing him win on Monday. Can pull out a run fresh and is a two time winner here at Belmont.
