The Oakbank Easter Carnival kicks off this Saturday where it is Railway Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

5 Ventoso (Bet Now: $5.50) might be a bit of value here. Mick Sell trains at Kyneton and his two career outings haven’t been too bad, the latest a narrow third at Mornington. Stable finds the leading rider to steer, Barend Vorster, and with upside, he’s certainly in with a shout.

3 Queman (Bet Now: $3.20) is a very interesting runner. Shane Oxlade trained three year old that hasn’t raced since his debut back in August at Murray Bridge when third to a handy horse in Fighting McLaren, who has gone onto be a proven a metro performer. Trialled up nicely to get ready but watch the market.

1 Lakehurst (Bet Now: $6.50) is a chance. Resumed at Balaklava when sitting on a genuine speed and fought on pretty well, just getting pipped near the peg when a close up second to Manage The Cycle. Drawn wide, but should press forward and give a sight at a good price.

2 Belle Plaisir (Bet Now: $4.60) has a class edge and I think that will get her home. Hasn’t raced since Cranbourne Cup Day when racing on an absolute bottomless track and was okay when third to Paul’s Regret. Has run well fresh and her two jumpouts leading in have been quite strong.

5 Hearty Lass (Bet Now: $9.00) deserves another chance. Far from disgraced fresh in the Matrice behind Ironclad before going to 1400m at Morphettville and I thought she was solid from the back behind Aiguilette, who was nearer the inside and that is where the majority of winners came from. Hard fit now third up, she’s hard to beat I’d suggest.

6 Tubby Two Tracks (Bet Now: $20.00) has been a ripping mare for Chris Bieg for a couple of seasons. Continued her love affair at Gawler when resuming with a strong on speed win over 1200m there. Like her up in trip, she’ll be near the front and giving a sight. Last bit will be the test.

1 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $6.50) loves racing at Oakbank and he’s racing really well…so why can’t he win? Strong winner over 2100m here two back before racing at Gawler on Sunday and just seemed a bit one paced but stayed on and was sound in defeat when fourth. I think he’ll take beating against this lot.

4 Foraoise (Bet Now: $5.50) continues to race in strong form and is a last start winner at the track, which is a big tick. That win came over this trip and he was quite impressive, albeit in a weak 54, but his efforts prior at Port Lincoln were strong, he’s hard fit, in form…very likeable despite a class rise.

9 Blue Bear (Bet Now: $6.50) is another with a liking for the track so easy to see why he’s popular. He ran in the Foraoise race mentioned above and he produced the flashing light run, working home with real purpose late in the piece to run third. Gets Vorster on and will be strong late.

1 Munster (Bet Now: $2.00) is three weeks between runs for Michael Hickmott since racing on the Parks track where I think he was ridden a tad cute and I think that brought him undone on the line when a narrow second to Office Jim. If he handles the carrying of the weight, he’s the likely winner.

4 Lord Luker (Bet Now: $3.60) is a progressive galloper for Will Clarken that has done little wrong in two Australian runs. Closing third fresh in a Morphettville maiden before going to Gawler where he was smashed in betting and justified the short quote with a strong win. Hard to beat with upside to come.

3 Allusion (Bet Now: $26.00) is a knockout hope. Unwanted in betting when resuming three weeks back over this trip on the Parks track. He was back near last in the run and never really a winning threat but the finale was more than sound I thought behind Impossible Action. He’ll be strong at the end.

I think the rise to 1400m looks absolutely ideal for 5 Struck By (Bet Now: $4.20). Three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m when leading and copping pressure. He was there to be run down and that he was when third to Another Award. The rise in trip I like, should lead and take beating.

6 Magnetic Edge (Bet Now: $12.00) is better suited at 1400m. Appreciated the fast speed three weeks ago over 1200m and closed the race nicely when second to dominant winner Another Award. Like her back up in trip and stable is having a good run at the moment. Leading contender.

If they go silly in front, look for 7 Perfect Route (Bet Now: $26.00) to launch at them late. Resumed in the Manihi Classic and just found the 1100m a tad sharp when down the track behind Lombardo. Good second up record and is 3/3 at the track, so an improved showing is on the cards.

2 Hopon Harry (Bet Now: $5.00) is third up from a break, peak fitness and I do think a rise to 1400m is ideal. Game second to Mac N Cheese fresh on Adelaide Cup Day before racing two weeks ago where on face value, he was plain behind Somewatt Fabulous, but I don’t think right out wide was the best ground to finish off. Getting towards D-Day.

3 Mr Metrics (Bet Now: $4.20) is a progressive animal for Team Jolly. 2/2 to start the prep, bolting up on debut at Clare before going to Murray Bridge where he produced sustained speed from the front and gave them a spanking. Not sure how good he is, but he deserves a crack in this kind of race.

11 Defining (Bet Now: $3.00) is a filly with good talent. She looked a good thing on paper when racing at Murray Bridge last time out and that she was, bolting up in a dominant display. Run prior fresh at Warrnambool was a beauty and off her efforts, she’s certainly in the mix here.

4 Clever Man (Bet Now: $5.00) is flying for Trevor Whtie and deserves a crack at a race like this. Had been knocking on the door to win one and it finally came last time out in the Mount Gambier Cup, where home track advantage came to the fore and he was strong late. A horse in form, he commands respect.

8 Rising Renown (Bet Now: $34.00) is a former Kiwi for Travis Doudle who hasn’t exactly set the world on fire since arriving in Australia but he is fitter and gets up in trip. Resumed over 1700m at Gawler just under two weeks back and battled but the winner of the race, Water Into Wine, looks a potential SA Derby candidate, so the form reads well enough for this.

11 Smiling Assassin (Bet Now: $51.00) is one for wider exotics. He comes through the Comfort Girl race from four weeks back. He was in the second half of the field and tried to get involved, but even allowing for the track pattern, he was still plain I thought. The stable change I find interesting so watch the market.

3 Rock The Ring (Bet Now: $2.60) can stamp his Goodwood credentials with a win here. He was brave in defeat fresh in the Manihi but was clearly no match for impressive winner Lombardo. Had trialled up super prior to that and with the run under the belt, he’ll be better for it and take beating here.

1 All Banter (Bet Now: $4.40) is a little query at 1100m but she’s a hard fit, in form mare who will be on speed. Lovely ride from Rawiller saw her win several weeks back on the Parks track. He timed his run to perfection and just made sure Spanish Heirloom did enough work to feel the pinch late. 1100m stretches her but she will run honestly.

7 Extra Time (Bet Now: $14.00) will be strong late if they overdo it in front. Resumed in the Manihi where he got back to near last and the way the track/race played, he had no chance, but his finale was sound. Looks to be really good speed here, so he’ll get his chance to launch late.

I like 5 Howl (Bet Now: $2.60) as a horse and I think he can resume a winner for David Jolly. He really strutted quality in his first prep, winning three of four and what I liked is that he ended last prep with a strong win and was tipped out. Resumes here with the Carnival in mind, and his jumpouts suggest he’s here to rock and roll.

1 Deep Speed (Bet Now: $3.40) is knocking on the door for Team McEvoy. Positive ride from Rawiller two weeks ago at Morphettville and he was hailed as the winner, but couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for a narrow third to Aiguilette. Drawn well, on speed, hard to beat.

4 Magnum Bullet (Bet Now: $15.00) comes from Kyneton for Mick Sell and comes into this as a last start winner. Home track advantage came to the fore when winning last time out, sitting on speed and finding under pressure to score. He seems effective as a sprinter and gets Vorster to steer.
