A strong nine card has been assembled for Sandown Hillside on Wednesday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (14:30) Ladbroke It Hcp 1000m
I like 7 Yowie (Bet Now: $6.50) here. John Sadler trained filly that is on debut and she looks ready to go off the back of a couple of jumpouts where she has won them both and looked to move nicely. The market will be the main guide here, especially with this stable, but I think she has ability.
3 Lalaguna (Bet Now: $2.60) is a daughter of I Am Invincible for the Maher/Eustace camp that is on debut. She was just fair I thought in a Cranbourne trial but she jumped out there last Monday and was a sharp winner in pretty solid time. J Kah on, I think she commands respect.
6 Star Magic (Bet Now: $5.50) was the filly who kicked out in the yard and did damage to Catherine Coleman and Luke Nolen in the mounting yard here a couple of weeks back. She relaxed, was able to race and actually did a pretty good job when fourth to Va Via. Better for the run, she commands respect.
Race 2. (15:05) Ladbrokes Switch Mdn Plate 1300m
At the time of writing this preview, the Griffiths/De Kock team are 3/50, two of those coming at the picnics. But, I think they can get a win here via 6 Rupert’s Delight (Bet Now: $4.20), who is on the back up after racing at Pakenham on Thursday night. Sat on speed and tried his guts out but was no match late for Glint Of Hope, running second, with a gap to third. That form does appear to read well for this.
8 Lottacheex (Bet Now: $3.40) is a daughter of Pins for Danny O’Brien that resumes. She had a three run prep in the Spring to start her career. Caught the eye in the first two runs but the third run was a howler as a short priced favourite. Looked to go well in a trial last Tuesday at Colac and did show enough promise when last in work to be respected here.
2 Ancient Egypt (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of American Pharoah for Peter Moody that is on debut. I find him an interesting runner because the stable had Hollywood Park in the race and IMO looked a much better chance on paper, but they have scratched him to go with this guy. Recent jumpout was solid enough so watch the market.
Race 3. (15:40) Ladbrokes Blended Bets (bm64) 1300m
2 Michigan (Bet Now: $10.00) deserves another chance I feel. Market wanted him when resuming at The Valley but he got into a tricky spot and just couldn’t get involved when down the track behind Rock Tycoon. Gets to a bigger track with a jockey upgrade and the form around him from last prep reads well.
Blinkers first time for 1 Seguso (Bet Now: $2.70) tells me this is a last ditch attempt to find improvement from him because he fair dinkum looked home last time out at Pakenham but got the staggers the last few strides and was nabbed. The 3kg claim and Blinkers are two ticks. But it’s last chance territory.
6 I Am Yours (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Team Hawkes trained three year old that has had two career outings. Was good late from the back on debut at Werribee before racing here where he looked in a bit of trouble early on in the straight but he switched on and really charged late to win nicely. There is depth to this field but think he can measure up.
Race 4. (16:15) Ladbrokes Bet Ticker (bm64) 1600m
2 Grid (Bet Now: $1.55) on top. Team Williams has this four year old, who made his Australian debut over 1400m here two weeks ago. He led at a slow tempo and understandably given he was fresh, but I reckon that slow tempo just brought him undone late. He’ll come on from that and I suspect they’ll let him roll earlier now he has the run under the belt.
6 Texcel (Bet Now: $4.40) is getting close to D-Day I feel. He was plain first up at Canterbury and I just put that down to a wet track, being first up. He then went to Kembla and just went too keen in the run, tiring late behind Character, who ran well last Saturday in the Phar Lap, so the form reads well. Just needs to show something similar to what he was doing last prep.
5 Seafield Road (Bet Now: $13.00) is the outsider in the small field but will put himself on speed. Sat on speed over 1400m at Pakenham last time out and tired late when down the track behind Crystal Chief. Small field helps his cause and will give a sight.
Race 5. (16:50) Ladbrokes Same Race Multi-bm64 1800m
1 Riotous Mischief (Bet Now: $5.50) for me here. I thought she was a definite pass mark fresh when resuming over the mile here two weeks ago. She was looming to be some sort of threat but I just think condition gave out late when third to talented mare White Hibiscus. Fitter and up to 1800m, with the claim, she’s very likeable.
2 Laybuy (Bet Now: $2.10) should love coming back to 1800m. He loomed to win over 2040m at The Valley last time out but he couldn’t quite finish it off when third to an in form Vardani. He’s a track/distance winner who should lob into a lovely spot from the draw and rates highly.
3 Hey Happy (Bet Now: $21.00) looks like he is being primed for a Warrnambool assault. Two runs back from a spell, the latest coming over the mile at Pakenahm and liked the way he warmed to the task late when a close up fourth. He can get a drag into the race, I think he’ll be dangerous.
Race 6. (17:25) The Big Screen Company (bm78) 1800m
I want to give 8 Upswing (Bet Now: $8.00) another chance. He ran here last Saturday at the mile when back and nearer the inside, which I don’t think has been the A1 ground in recent meetings, so want to be forgiving of his finale. Fitter now and up to 1800m, as well as drawn out, hopefully he can get a drag into the race and be strong at the end.
6 Yukon (Bet Now: $2.70) is two weeks between runs for Team Hawkes since racing at this track/distance when a short priced favourite and to my eye, he had his chance when on speed and run down late by Tarn’s Prince. He should get a lovely run from the gate here but is close to D-Day I feel.
5 Lorente (Bet Now: $9.50) is third up from a break and should about be at peak fitness. He ran over the mile at The Valley last time out and did a pretty good job I thought against the race shape when a closing fourth to Zerelle. Hard fit now and getting to 1800m, he’ll take beating.
Race 7. (18:00) 50yr Life Member J Adams-bm64 2400m
3 Pearlman (Bet Now: $7.00) to bounce back. I was quite keen on his chances a few weeks ago on the Parks track but he was given none by Ben Price. Should have won, but just had no luck at a vital stage, most of that due to pilot error. Prior form was strong and good enough to take this out.
1 Point Nepean (Bet Now: $6.50) is a huge market watch. Team Williams galloper who has one Australian run, which came over 2400m on Geelong Cup Day in the Spring where he paraded like he would with the run/prep under the belt and that’s how he raced. He could finish a tiring 5th/6th, or trot up. Market will be fascinating.
11 Kimmy Be Cool (Bet Now: $8.50) is a ripper for Gerald Egan that is a very honest animal. She tried her heart out at Yarra Valley last time out but couldn’t quite get there when a narrow second to Shultzy. Gets a significant jockey upgrade, weight relief and a good map. Key chance.
Race 8. (18:30) Life Member Tony Cavanagh-bm64 1000m
There is a bit to like about 4 Head First (Bet Now: $3.80) for the Price/Kent team. Hasn’t raced since her debut win at Wodonga back in July where she was on speed and trucking before being clicked up and away she went. She spanked them and ran some of the best late splits of the meeting. Jumpouts have been strong, Moloney sticks and maps beautifully from the draw.
2 No Crying (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Team Freedman trained filly that comes back to the scene of the crime after winning over 1000m at Sandown where she pretty much won like Black Caviar with how ridiculously easy she did it under Froggy. Good test here, but off last start, she commands respect.
8 Miss Arizona (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Peter Moody trained filly that was met with good market support when resuming at Pakenham and although she was there to be run down, she found under pressure and in the end, she drew clear to win impressively. Draws tricky here, but she has talent.
Race 9. (19:00) 50yr Life Member P Reilly-bm70 1400m
3 Ocean’s Jen (Bet Now: $4.20) looks the good thing on the program, provided the inside is okay. Three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when tucked in behind the speed before cutting back inside and driving hard late to just miss out on the win. Maps well from the gate, has the right…think she wins.
6 Safe Passage (Bet Now: $8.00) is knocking on the door to win a race this time in. Resumed with a solid third here behind Ancient Girl before going to Pakenham where she tried hard but was no match late for Comica. I think she has more upside than that mare here and has more talent.
8 Lady D’Oro (Bet Now: $26.00) is an interesting runner. Griffiths/De Kock trained mare that is several weeks between runs since racing over the mile here where she got back in the run and while she was never really a threat, didn’t mind the way she finished her race off behind Honeycreeper. Whether this is a prep run for something, not sure, but one I could include in exotics.
