The Belmont Winter Carnival continues on Saturday where it is Belmont Newmarket Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Belmont Newmarket 🏆: View the Field for the Belmont Newmarket
Race 1. (13:47) Westspeed Platinum Mdn 1400m
With respect to the connections, this is a horrible maiden, never mind a Saturday metro maiden. A rise to 1400m does very much suit the Colin Webster trained gelding 3 Time Starts Now (Bet Now: $5.00). Both runs back from a break have come over 1200m and I’ve really liked the way he has found the line each time. Been a bit flat footed initially but good late, looking like a horse that wants further, which is what he gets here.
6 Fire Goddess (Bet Now: $3.30) is hard to beat if she can get a cheap furlong or two in front. Game in defeat two back over 1300m before coming back to 1200m at Belmont last time out when keen on speed and tiring late. She seems to race best when finding the front and I think that happens here. If she gets a cheap lead, she could pinch it.
A key threat here is 1 Trade Fair Express (Bet Now: $3.80) for the Bruce Watkins team. Ran over 1300m last Thursday at PInjarra and closed off pretty well but couldn’t quite get there when second to Bon Odyssey. The extra 100m I do like and should be hard fit. The knock with him is that he has had numerous chances to break the maiden tag.
Race 2. (14:27) Long Leaf At Rangeview Stud 1200m
If 2 Clairvoyance (Bet Now: $1.35) can stretch her brilliance to 1200m, then Neville Parnham is well and truly cooking with gas when it comes to this filly. Electric win over 1000m here two weeks ago, leading throughout and she gave them a proper spanking, running a sharp time and that of a Stakes class horse. If she can get 1200m, she wins.
1 Watch Me Dance (Bet Now: $4.00) is a daughter of I’m All The Talk that resumes for the Steve Wolfe team. This filly was one of the better juveniles in WA last season, placing in the Karrakatta before getting the job done in the Sires Produce and was tipped out soon after. She looks like a horse that could be on a path towards the WA Guineas and potentially the Kingston Town, which has been a proven formula in recent years. Has class/quality and her trial last week was good.
3 Keep Your Feet (Bet Now: $10.00) is third pick, but a very much distant third pick. Simon Miller trained gelding that ran last Saturday over 1400m here when specked at a price and I didn’t mind the way he finished his race off when second to Queen Brown, who looks very much above average and destined for better things. Just back to 1200m and taking on a couple of high quality gallopers, he’s third pick.
Race 3. (15:07) Amelia Park Lodge (bm72+) 1400m
Think only bad luck beats 6 Serenity Bay (Bet Now: $2.15). Forced to ease back to near last from a wide gate when racing here two weeks ago but still managed to finish off her race powerfully to nab them in the last stride for one of the wins of the meeting. Back up to 1400m, draws much better…just has to hold her form to win again.
5 Position Of Power (Bet Now: $4.20) is in career best form for David Harrison. Big step up in grade/depth when racing here a fortnight back and once he got off the leaders heels, he looked home but couldn’t hold out the brilliant finishing burst produced by Serenity Bay. Tricky draw, but hard to knock the way he’s going at the moment.
1 Snowchino (Bet Now: $6.50) might need one more, but she’s got a touch of class about her when right and can run a much improved race at odds. Resumed behind Floyd over 1000m here two weeks back when wide and doing work, just feeling the pinch. Fab third up record, so might need one more but has a touch of class.
Race 4. (15:47) Crown Perth (bm78+) 2000m
4 Burning Pride (Bet Now: $3.90) looks like she has got more to come for Holly Taylor and is the one to beat for me. Looked in a bit trouble back in the run when racing over 2100m here two weeks ago but Pike played the waiting game and the gaps appeared, with the mare driving through late to get the job done. Hard to beat now she’s fourth up and at peak fitness.
2 Noir De Rue (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Justin Warwick trained stayer that is likely being aimed at a race like the Kalgoorlie Cup. Four weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when keen on speed and tiring late when fourth to Sentimental Gift, who is heading towards the Perth Cup later this year, so think that form reads well.
3 Gangbuster (Bet Now: $10.00) is going well for Luke Fernie and will run another usual honest race. Attempted to lead throughout over 2100m here a fortnight ago and gave a decent enough kick under Ramoly but couldn’t quite see it through when third to Burning Pride, beaten some five lengths. He’ll give a sight from the front I’m sure.
Race 5. (16:23) Mrs Mac's (bm66+) 1650m
Looks pretty straight forward here with the Mcauliffe mare 4 Montelena (Bet Now: $1.65). Burst to win a race for a little while and it finally came over this track/distance a fortnight back when sitting off the pace before Parnham eased her into clear air and she went through her gears like a nice horse and was far too good. If she reproduces that effort here, she wins again.
2 Aconite (Bet Now: $7.50) was enormous in defeat behind Montelena two weeks ago. Four wide early before Ramoly showed initiative to press forward to get on speed, but that massive work toll just got to the mare late when overhauled by Montelena, but the run was still outstanding. Better luck this time around, she goes close, but has that run busted her?
11 Wee Ripper (Bet Now: $13.00) is one to include in wider multiples. Tick over two weeks between runs since racing over the mile at Northam where he was tucked in behind the speed and made up ground without really threatening behind the city performed Gunnago. Draws the inside gate, so does no work and can fill a first four spot.
Race 6. (17:05) Happy B'day R Gajewski (rs1mw) 1000m
Banking on 2 Super Ex (Bet Now: $3.70) improving from one start to the next. Luke Fernie trains this former Sydney galloper, who made his WA debut over this track/distance last Wednesday and admittedly, wasn’t the strongest race and he took forever to get there, but he was wearing down a proven Saturday class horse, Mia Dolce. You’d like to think he’ll come on from that and the claim for Madi Derick certainly helps.
4 Weaponson (Bet Now: $4.40) has been a model of consistency right throughout his career for the David Harrison team. Tick over three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he had a good battle with the eventual winner Excellent Dream but that horse was just too strong on the line. Like the little freshen up for him and senior jock takes over.
8 Round The Point (Bet Now: $11.00) saves his best for 1000m so giving him respect. He attempted to lead throughout over 1200m two weeks back here and tried hard but 1200m at this level on testing ground found him out late. Back to 1000m is a big tick for this guy and I think with cover, he’ll be far more effective. Knockout chance.
Race 7. (17:45) Belmont Newmarket 1200m
Looks an ideal kicking off point for the Michael Lane trained gelding 1 Free Trade (Bet Now: $1.75). This six year old hasn’t raced since early March when bolting up on his home track at Bunbury when taking out the Bunbury Stakes. Been given a good break and if you’re a trial perv, his trials leading in have been outstanding, and if he runs up to them, he wins.
3 Essential Spice (Bet Now: $6.00) is better suited at 1000m than 1200m, but does have hard race fitness under the belt. Ran two weeks ago over 1000m here and worked home pretty well, but on the line was held by Floyd in running third. This will be a real sit/sprint I dare say so it won’t be a brutal 1200m, which helps her cause.
The best version of 8 Pym’s Royale (Bet Now: $6.00) is capable. He resumed in the Bolton Sprint three weeks ago and I thought his effort at Stakes level was a definite pass mark from near last in the run, finishing a few lengths away from impressive winner Red Can Man. I’d love a rise to 1400m for him but he does have a good second up record.
Race 8. (18:25) Vale Marjorie Charleson-bm72+ 1200m
10 Silkinize (Bet Now: $6.00) on top. It was the opening meeting of the new season, but Pike put his nomination in for ride of the year when getting this bloke home two weeks ago. Looked in an awful spot but Pike weaved the magic wand, sliced his way through the field and was too good. He should eat up 1200m and is clearly one of the hardest to beat.
If this was a bone dry track, I could easily be tempted to have 2 Jericho Missile (Bet Now: $4.80) on top. He ran over 1000m here a fortnight back and savaged the line late from off the pace when second to impressive winner Floyd. He’ll eat up 1200m but the query is the weather. Soft5, Soft6 at worst for him. Anything worse and he may struggle, so the weather will determine his chances.
11 Bel My Pago (Bet Now: $26.00) has a good record at Belmont and this mare is knocking on the door to win one for Lindsey Smith. Ran over 1400m at Pinjarra last time out when wide no cover for the trip yet kept coming but couldn’t quite get past the leader Super Teroitoa. Still, a very good effort. Good weight relief and back to 1200m suits.
Race 9. (19:05) Go Racing For Free (rs1mw) 1300m
Hopefully Azzopardi can make amends for her somewhat ordinary steer aboard 6 Ohbeeh (Bet Now: $6.00) last Wednesday over 1200m here. Seemed to get a good run in transit, but instead of playing the percentages and getting clear, she waited for the gaps to appear and by the time she got clear on the gelding, it was race over. Back up in trip, really hard to beat.
5 Inflation (Bet Now: $3.10) is really hard to beat back to this level. Took on some decent horse flesh two weeks ago here when leading and fighting on pretty well in defeat when third to Serenity Bay, who would be $1.50 against this field, so the form reads well for this. Over a year between wins, but is knocking on the door.
3 Double The Pro (Bet Now: $16.00) is worth another chance. Was on him when he raced 1400m here three weeks ago but was caught four wide no cover for the trip and rightfully had to drop out so a total forgive behind Put A Spell On You. His prior efforts suggested a city win wasn’t far off, and he draws much better this time around.
