The Randwick Carnival concludes this Saturday with a ten race card, headlined by the All Aged Stakes (1400m) and the Champagne Stakes (1600m). The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out seven metres from the 1000m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder.

3 Pericles (Bet Now:  $SP.00), ability wise, is the best horse in the race. Just a matter of what is left in the petrol tank given he contested the Derby on very testing ground two weeks back where he was bolting behind the speed but once J Mac let him down, his wheels were spinning and he didn’t finish it off. Firmer footing and back to 2000m, he has to rate as one of the leading chances.

1 Osipenko (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should appreciate a firmer deck, touch wood. He was far from disgraced in the George Ryder before going to the Doncaster where he seemingly looked the winner the way he was trucking but once Mick Dee pushed the button, he just whacked away but wasn’t beaten far by Mr Brightside. That is the A1 form line for this race and up to 2000m, he’s hard to beat.

6 Mindspace (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the one with fresh legs and heading in the right direction for Mark Newnham. He was a notable drifter in betting when winning his maiden over 1850m at Newcastle last time. He really appreciated the rise in trip and after getting a suck run from the gate, he got clear and got better as the race went on, suggesting a rise to 2000m here is ideal and he’s the one on the up whereas some of these want the paddock.

10 Darci Diva (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to bring her country form to town but Paul Shailer is no mug and when he comes to town, you have to respect that. This mare is flying this time in, albeit in country races, but she was a dominant winner on the home deck at Port Macquarie a few weeks ago. Didn’t look out of place at Warwick Farm earlier in the week so coming here, she does appeal.

14 Mo Chara (Bet Now:  $SP.00) deserves a crack at a Highway for Scott Spackman. He’s heading in the right and is looking to make it four wins on the bounce here. All three wins have come at Wagga, two of those at 1200m with a 1400m win in between. He sits back in the run and finds the line with purpose, and with good speed engaged here, I think he’ll one of the strongest at the end.

1 Blow Dart (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should be suited back to 1200m. He ran over that trip two back at Newcastle when a narrow second to Shohei before going to 1400m in the Country Championship Wildcard at Goulburn where he found the trip a bridge too far. Back miles in grade/depth and back to 1200m, lands on speed, he can run an improved race.

6 Miss Einstein (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has been excellent in two runs for Sam Kavanagh and I do think getting to 1400m is ideal. Resumed with a strong effort over 1200m before going to a Rosehill Midway over 1300m three weeks ago and she was very good from near last when second to dominant winner Astero, who ran well at Doomben in defeat last Saturday, so the form reads well, and getting to a bigger track, 1400m, she appeals.

5 Floating (Bet Now:  $SP.00) can win, but even money is poison odds and I’d want a much better price before chiming in. He ran over this trip first up at the midweeks at Warwick Farm where he didn’t get room to move and build the revs, winding up late when a narrow second to Travest. Staying at 1400m is the knock but has the quality factor, J Mac on and handles heavy ground.

I think 3 Dhakuri (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is on track to have a really good prep. He only had one run for Nathan Doyle back in the Spring when down the track on the Kenso behind Pandano. He’s had two trials to get ready. First trial, he looked like a donkey. Second trial, he looked a city class horse, which he is when right, and the big key was the Blinkers being applied. At the time of writing this, the Blinkers on hasn’t been made as a gear change, so I am saying this is a prep run, but he is talented, so keep an eye on him.

3 Opal Ridge (Bet Now:  $SP.00) can turn the tables on Magic Time. I am very forgiving of her run in the PJ Bell. She got into a tricky spot from the gate, she checked off heels at one stage and lost momentum. She just took forever to wind into her work but was strong late to run fourth. I think she wants more ground, which she gets here, she’s proven at the Randwick 1400m on wet ground and has a gate to settle much closer.

Have to give respect to 1 Magic Time (Bet Now:  $SP.00). There was a lot of quality about the first up win in the PJ Bell, where she gave them a start and a beating, letting down with real purpose late and she produced very good change up speed for one of the more impressive wins of the meeting. Fitter, up in trip, stable flying…she only has to hold her form to be going close again IMO.

I think 2 Renaissance Woman (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is here to run very well fresh with a likely eye towards the Queensland Oaks. She has been kept on ice and dodged the main part of the Sydney Autumn with an eye towards the Brisbane Winter. She did a really good job in the Spring, highlighted by a win in the Ethereal on Caulfield Cup Day. Loved the way she closed off in a recent trial and 1400m fresh is ideal.

I’m with 9 Waihaha Falls (Bet Now:  $SP.00). John O’Shea trained gelding that is three weeks between runs since resuming in the Star Kingdom where he got back in an on speed dominated affair and made up minor headway, but it was at Rosehill and his record does say he thrives at Randwick, especially when he gets his toe in, so he gets conditions to suit and will be strong late.

3 Bacchanalia (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has done nothing wrong this time in, winning 2/2. Dominant first up win on Kembla Grange Classic Day before going to the Star Kingdom where he got into a lovely spot near the speed before getting the split in the straight and in a driving go, he was able to finish best. He’s becoming a more genuine horse and loves getting his toe in. Rates highly.

6 Coal Crusher (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will jump on speed, likely lead, and prove hard to run down. He has been strong in two runs back from a spell, the latest being three weeks ago in the Star Kingdom where he landed on speed and gave a very strong kick in the straight but in a driving finish, he couldn’t quite get there when third to Bacchanalia. Love him onto the bigger track and hard fit, he’ll take beating.

Throw at the stumps in the shape of 3 Mount Popa (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for Team Hawkes. He resumed three weeks ago in the Doncaster Prelude, more or less a glorified trial for him, and he ran accordingly, beating one runner home behind stablemate Bandersnatch. He trialled at Rosehill on Tuesday and albeit he beat one runner home there too, gee I thought he moved nicely and was very strong through the line. Last time he was at 2000m on heavy ground, he ran third in the Queen Elizabeth. He’s an each way bet for me in a very even race.

1 Huetor (Bet Now:  $SP.00), I think, is back on track. Opening two runs for the prep were a bit on the plain side before going to the Neville Sellwood three weeks ago where he got back in the run and while he was never a winning, I liked the way he found the line late in the piece behind Zeyrek. Gradually getting towards peak fitness and if he’s going to head to Brisbane again, he’d want to be going close against these.

7 Diamil (Bet Now:  $SP.00) was a strong winner at 2000m when last in work and I do think the rise in trip will suit him. He ran three weeks ago in the Doncaster Prelude where he had the suck run behind the speed and was a bit one paced in the run to the line but kept on and was pretty good in defeat behind Bandersnatch. Love him at 2000m and the bigger tick is getting to Randwick. Leading contender.

I think 4 Tom Kitten (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has the engine under the hood to measure up. Not sure he beat a great deal last Saturday in the Fernhill but you had to like the way he attacked the line, especially with the extravagant action he had late. He is a big boy who will appreciate more ground in time but off that win last week, at least he has ticked the 1600m box and stable is flying with their juveniles.

2 Militarize (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to be respected. Yes, he was a big price in the Sires, but if you just purely look at the run, he was dominant and made an absolute mess of them. Did he handle the conditions best? Clearly. Is he the best 1400m+ 2YO in Australia? A win here and the answer is yes. Has to be respected…but from an SP perspective, he could be slight unders, so if you like him, wait and see what the market does late.

Is there such thing as a 2400m Derby for a 2YO? If so, 7 Felix The Scat (Bet Now:  $SP.00) would be $1.10. He has the engine under the hood I am sure of that. His problem is brilliance. Not sure he has that, but that could be offset by the fact this could be a slog, survival of the fittest, and he will be one of the last horses standing.

I took $8 for 1 Zaaki (Bet Now:  $SP.00) Pre Noms last weekend because I just couldn’t believe he was that price. At his best, he has claims to being one of the best horses in Australia. He hasn’t raced since a dominant all the way win in the Champions Stakes during Cup Week at Flemington. He wasn’t 100% early on in the Autumn so the stable have kept him on ice and his trial last week here on the Poly, gee it was a nice piece of work, and a big lead for me is J Mac chose him over Jacquinot, and keep in mind when he has ridden the horse, the record is 9: 8-1-0. Good enough for me.

12 Giga Kick (Bet Now:  $SP.00) gives the impression that 1400m would be no issue and now seems the right time to try it. I thought he was outstanding in the TJ Smith. He was ridden more forward than usual by Purton and I thought he ran a super race in defeat, just proving no match late for I Wish I Win. He is only third up so he has good room for improvement, he has change up speed, he handles a shifty Randwick surface…only runs well.

2 Lost And Running (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is an absolute beauty for John O’Shea that has the most upside of those who have kicked off their prep. He resumed in the TJ Smith and I thought his run was one of the best of the beaten brigade. He was wide throughout and looked gone on the turn, but he picked up and was very good to the line and a huge pass mark behind I Wish I Win. Yet to tick the 1400m box but IMO that will be no issue, he’ll land on speed and take beating.

16 Cotehele (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a John O’Shea trained son of Tavistock that resumes. This guy had a pretty solid Spring/Summer prep, where he contested some pretty solid races and for the most part measured up nicely against some likely types, namely Superium and Coal Crusher. Good fresh record and he was sharp in winning a Poly trial here last week. 1400m fresh tells me there is intent, he likes wet ground, he’s right down in the weights…only runs well.

4 Brutality (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will produce some of the best late splits of the race and meeting. Just a matter of how much start he concedes. He resumed in the Star Kingdom three weeks back at Rosehill where he got back to near last in the run and he was never a threat in an on speed dominated race, but did find the line pretty well. Might want a couple of more runs, but if they go silly in front, look out for him late.

3 Jojo Was A Man (Bet Now:  $SP.00) might want one more but he does love racing at Randwick so that is his saving grace leading into this. He resumed in the Star Kingdom where he paraded like he would need the run and that’s how it panned out when down the track behind Bacchanalia. Not the best of second up records, but one of the four second up runs have been at Randwick and he was good in defeat, so at a price, don’t pen him.

8 Easy Single (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will do me in the get out. Maher/Eustace trained gelding that is second up here, resuming three weeks ago at Flemington down the straight where he was one of the first off the bit but kept finding the line and was really good in defeat I thought behind Kallos. Back to a bending track, a track he has run well at previously and most notably, a wet track on the cards, he’s an each way bet in the last.

Back to 1200m, I am confident that 1 Maotai (Bet Now:  $SP.00) can give this a shake. Kacy Fogden trained gelding that has raced at around the 1400m distance range his past two, the latest run being at Rosehill three weeks ago where I thought it was a very negative ride from Ryan Maloney, essentially handing the race to the eventual winner Tamerlane on a platter, and couldn’t run it down in the straight. Hopefully handbrakes off here, he’ll be near the front and I think he’ll be hard to run down.

3 The Face (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and give a sight I am sure. He did that three weeks back in the Star Kingdom at Rosehill where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a strong kick but just couldn’t quite see it through and felt the pinch late when fifth to Bacchanalia. The end of 1200m is the knock with him but he has the right racing pattern to give himself every chance.
