Nine races have been set down for Ascot this Saturday for Sheila Gwynne Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out thirteen metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:29) Drummond Golf Hcp 1200m
2 Shmoov Moova (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks clearly the one to beat if there is petrol left in the tank. He took on the older horses two weeks ago over 1400m and was a winner, just getting there with his ability and brilliance the difference. Back to 1200m I like and back to his own age, he takes beating.
3 Kay Tee Why (Bet Now: $SP.00) is promising and heading in the right direction for Adam Durrant. Impressive first up winner over 1000m here a fortnight back, giving them a start and a beating in an electric performance. Good upside/improvement to come and up to 1200m, he’s a leading contender.
1 Elite Missile (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Stephen Miller trained gelding that resumes. He is first up after racing during the Carnival, his last run seeing him finish down the track in the WA Guineas. His best is clearly good enough so watch betting.
Race 2. (16:04) Tabtouch - Westspeed Platinum (Rs0ly) 1200m
1 Flick The Switch (Bet Now: $SP.00) has earned a crack in town for the Faithfull camp given she has won six of her last seven starts, albeit at the Provincials, but I don’t care where it is. If you build a winning record like that, you must go good, so keen to see how she goes.
3 Grand Reserve (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an interesting runner. Dan Morton trained galloper that resumes and although he is better suited at 1600m+, he does have a touch of quality about him and he will be strong late so watch betting and see what it does.
2 Famous Jurney (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to 1200m after racing over 1400m two weeks back here when on speed throughout and tried hard, just feeling the pinch late behind Terratif. Back in trip, good racing style, he’ll take running down.
Race 3. (16:39) Glenroy Chaff 2Yo Plate 1000m
2 Kings Court (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks a filly of promise for Luke Fernie and keen to see how she resumes. She had a two run prep during the Carnival last year and was solid enough without setting the world on fire. Liked her recent trial and stable can get them ready fresh so watch betting.
1 Split The Gee (Bet Now: $SP.00) is hard to beat for Luke Fernie off the back of a debut win at this track/distance two weeks ago when giving them a start and a beating, letting down with good change up speed late to win and win well. Keen to see how she goes against these.
4 Exceed The Boom (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a son of Exceedance that resumes for Mitch Pateman. He is first up, having not raced since his debut back in November behind Yes Queen after sitting wide no cover. Trial to get ready was quite good so watch betting and see what it does.
Race 4. (17:19) Mca Polytrack (Bm66+) 1000m
7 Shooting Spirit (Bet Now: $SP.00) has a really good record at this track/distance and despite the rise in grade/depth, I’m confident he can measure up. Latest start was a track/distance win on Feb 26, giving them a start and a beating in a strong performance. He’ll sit off the good speed here and launch late, hopefully over the top.
6 Keep Ita Mystery (Bet Now: $SP.00) takes on the older horses after racing two weeks ago at this track/distance when trying hard against his own age but couldn’t quite see it through behind Kay Tee Why. If he gets some form of front end control, he’ll take running down.
4 Sinful Living (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improver for Team Pearce. She resumed over this track/distance when leading and giving a solid kick from the front but first up, condition just gave way late in the piece. Better for the run, should press forward and only run well.
Race 5. (17:59) Hugh Jamieson Trophy (Bm72+) 1200m
7 Hang Glider (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to have thrived off a freshen up and is the one to beat for mine. He was five weeks runs when a dominant track/distance winner two weeks ago, getting a beaut run in transit before angling clear and he got better as the race went on. Upside/improvement to come, he’s the one to beat.
4 Brave Strike (Bet Now: $SP.00) has a tricky draw to overcome but does bring a class factor given she resumed in the Marjorie Charleson. She attempted to lead throughout and gave a strong kick from the front but just felt the pinch late. Pike on, she rates highly for me.
3 Speed Dream (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a handy gelding that resumes. He ended last prep on a high when a winner at Belmont, where he does tend to race better at vs Ascot so whether he’s just prepping for the Belmont season, not sure, but I’d watch the market because he can pull out a decent run fresh.
Race 6. (18:37) Belhus Racing (Rs1mw) 2100m
2 Covert Rose (Bet Now: $SP.00) is unknown at the trip but she is racing as if she will eat it up. She ran over the mile two weeks ago where she got off speed by worked home with real purpose when a narrow second to Here For Cheques. If the trip is fine, I think she’s too good.
8 Taranaki (Bet Now: $SP.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. Formerly with Chris Waller, he has had a couple of runs for Luke Fernie, running third each time. Hard fit now and up to a suitable trip, he’s quite dangerous.
10 Gold Friars (Bet Now: $SP.00) has found positive form and he can certainly go on with it. He placed 2000m at Pinjarra just under three weeks back when trying hard but just failed to get there. Has versatility re racing style and is a must for exotics.
Race 7. (19:11) Peters Investments (Bm66+) 1400m
4 Our Mate Archie (Bet Now: $SP.00) should love the rise back up in trip. He was 1400m back to 1200m when racing two weeks ago here. He got too far out of his ground but you had to like the way he closed his race off in defeat behind Hang Glider. Up in trip again, he takes beating.
3 Knot Secret (Bet Now: $SP.00) has run well in town before so don’t ignore him. His last run came at Albany where he did a bit too much work to land near the speed and that early burn just felt the pinch late. Better run in transit, he can threaten.
5 Strike Now (Bet Now: $SP.00) stays at 1400m where he resumed at this track/distance two weeks back. He was near last throughout and just couldn’t get involved. Fitter…his best is good enough to sneak a first four spot at a massive price.
Race 8. (19:46) Sheila Gwynne Classic 1400m
It’s hard to get away from 1 Bonjoy (Bet Now: $SP.00). Loved the way she let down to win several weeks ago in the Ascot Mile, giving them a start and a beating, getting better as the race went on to win and win well. Fresh legs and back to 1400m is a query but she’s very good.
4 Zephyra (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to 1400m after racing over the mile a fortnight back where she attempted to lead throughout and gave a solid kick from the front huts felt the pinch late. Like her back to 1400m and with a more patient steer, she can bounce back.
7 Wango Award (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improver for Team Williams. She resumed two weeks back in the Marjorie Charleston where the market said she would need the run and that’s how it panned out. Fitter and up to 1400m, her best is clearly good enough.
Race 9. (20:21) Kitt Logistics (Rs1mw) 1500m
10 Sail Session (Bet Now: $SP.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when off speed and kept chasing in a pretty good effort in defeat behind Essentric Nature. If he can settle closer in the run, he’ll be hard to hold out.
8 Playing Quest (Bet Now: $SP.00) has done his recent racing over 1400m at Bunbury and is racing like 1500m here will suit. The latest run saw him sit off speed and worked to the line well enough in defeat. Commands respect here in what looks a winnable race.
4 Fine Touch (Bet Now: $SP.00) should be better for the first up run, which came over 1200m at Ascot two weeks back when run off her legs and was never really a factor. Might want one more and a further rise in trip, but she does have a touch of quality about her.
