A bumper ten race card has been assembled for Randwick this Saturday, headlined by the Group ll Apollo Stakes (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Apollo Stakes 🏆: View the Field for the Apollo Stakes
Race 1. (12:15) TAB HIGHWAY HCP 1800M
His form says he’s going ordinary, but I reckon 4 Onemore Sapphire (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is one of the better gambles on the card. It’s been an odd prep by Terry Evans, with the bushfires certainly not helping. The distances have been mixed and while on face value he hasn’t done much, he’s racing as if he wants further, which he gets here, and he is a swimmer. Think he only runs well.
11 Senatorial (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) rises a bit in grade/depth but Tony Ball has him flying. Has won his past two, each coming at Taree, firstly over the mile before stepping up to 2000m and producing a really good finale to score. Hard fit, in form, handles wet ground and with only 51kg on his back, I think he’ll run a beauty against these.
Tash Burleigh has done a really good job with 2 Ritmico (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS). Took a little while to find his feet after formerly being with Chris Waller and the faith was rewarded last start at Wagga with a strong win over 1800m, helped by a lovely ride from an in form Shaun Guymer. Harder here, but I always respect the stable when they come to town.
Race 2. (12:50) CATANACH'S HCP 2400M
1 Dark Pearl (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is flying for Chris Waller. Impressive win two back over this trip on the Kenso track before being freshened up and coming back to 2000m here a fortnight ago where he found them a bit sharp but loved the way he found the line late. He’ll eat up 2400m for sure and I think wet ground will be okay for him.
4 She’s Ideel (Bet Now: $1.80 TOP ODDS) is racing as if she will eat up 2400m and it’s hard to knock the way Bjorn Baker has her going. Impressive win against an average bunch at Canterbury but proved that was no fluke two weeks ago where with an electric finale from off the pace to win again. On breeding, 2400m should be fine and hard to knock a mare in form.
Not sure what upside 3 Our Fun (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) has got for this prep but the Freedman camp have her going well all the same. She comes through the Australia Day Cup at Warwick Farm where it was a real stop/start tempo and not sure that was her go. Stayed on well enough in defeat though, finishing fourth to Taikomochi. One for multiples.
Race 3. (13:25) RADISSON BLU HOTEL SYDNEY HCP 1000M
In the corner of 1 God Of Thunder (Bet Now: $2.30 TOP ODDS)), who resumes for Team Hawkes. This guy has always showed talent but at times hasn’t been able to put it all together, but in the Spring, that all changed, graduating from benchmark company to running an excellent second in the Group ll Caulfield Sprint behind Miss Leonidas, who went very close to beating Nature Strip in the Moir. Smashed the clock and looked brilliant in a Rosehill trial, plus he likes wet ground.
2 Coruscate (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) is one of the bigger queries for the meeting. James Cummings trains this five year old, who hasn’t raced since December 2018 when placing at Rosehill behind Bon Amis, who at the time was flying. Has had two trials in readiness for his return and has looked quite good each time. Market will be the guide as to how forward he is.
The best way to ride 4 Royal Witness (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) IMO is if they let him roll along on speed. Hasn’t been able to do that in both runs back from a break due to circumstances but I think back to Randwick and down in the weights, wouldn’t be shocked at all if they rolled forward and ran along at a decent clip, giving those behind something to chase.
Race 4. (14:00) LONHRO PLATE 1000M
7 Dame Giselle (Bet Now: $1.75 TOP ODDS) looks the likely winner. Quality filly for Team Snowden that is first up, having not raced since producing a brilliant finish to claim the Golden Gift and ensure she gets into the Golden Slipper. Impressive trial win to tune her up for her return and on breeding, she should be okay on wet ground.
10 Ticket To Ride (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) is a Team Freedman trained filly who has placed in both career outings. Latest came two weeks ago at Randwick where she paraded like she would improve with the run. Really liked the way she finished her race off behind Rulership, who I am a big fan of. Fitter, touch of class, she looks hard to beat here.
Bit of a throw at the stumps here in including 5 Jor El (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS), an I Am Invincible colt for Gerald Ryan. He did everything wrong on debut at Canterbury behind Prague so forget he went around there. That form was ticked off a couple of Saturdays back and his trial at Rosehill was very sharp, both to the eye and on the clock, and on breeding, should handle the ground.
Race 5. (14:35) SOUTHERN CROSS STAKES 1200M
I think we might well see the Doncaster winner resume here, and I think he can resume a winner. I’m speaking of 2 Cascadian (Bet Now: $3.90), a James Cummings import who seemed to get better as the prep got deeper. Early on, he seemed to struggle to settle into the Australian lifestyle, but he ended up being Group l placed. Loved his trial behind Bivouac, think the wet track is no concern. 1200m is short of his best, but I reckon class just about gets him home.
6 Special Reward (Bet Now: $2.55) faces a stiff test here against some quality types but he does have race fitness and the right racing pattern. Resumed several weeks ago at Randwick when heavily backed and for mine, I thought he had every chance when second to Southern Lad, who was beaten but ran well last Saturday. Likely leads, gives a sight…does he have the class to fend them off?
One soft trial concerns me somewhat with 5 Desert Lord (Bet Now: $7.50), but in that trial, he did one thing that really caught my eye – he relaxed. He’s always been a working progress in that regard. He can get quite head strong, but in the trial he looked to relax beautifully. Is that enough of a grounding to win here? Last 10-15 minutes of betting will tell you.
Race 6. (15:10) HEINEKEN 3 HCP 1600M
Just how good is 7 Attorney? (Bet Now: $2.90) I think we’ll get somewhat of a guide here, because he is first up on a wet track and he does strike a Saturday race with a bit of depth. In saying that, his two wins to start his Australian career in the Winter were very impressive and he did look like he would come right on with that prep under the belt. Two trials have been excellent and I reckon he has a bit of class/quality about him.
3 Mongolian Wolf (Bet Now: $9.00) is second up here for Kris Lees. Resumed over 1500m here two weeks ago and he was a real eye catcher, warming to the task late and through the line when third to Romani Girl. He may want further than the mile, but 1600m on testing ground will feel like further and Nash sticks from the resumption.
12 Domed (Bet Now: $31.00) can be an improver at odds for John Thompson. Resumed over the mile here three weeks ago where she didn’t really fire a shot behind To Your Health, but the race shape wasn’t really suited to her racing pattern. Gets really good weight relief and she loves getting her toe in, so she can run a big here I think at odds.
Race 7. (15:50) LIGHT FINGERS STAKES 1200M
8 Emeralds (Bet Now: $31.00) is a talented daughter of Sebring for the John Sargent stable that resumes. This filly hasn’t raced since the Thousand Guineas where she was far from disgraced behind Flit. Off the Jan 23 trial, I’m saying perhaps she may need this run en route to potentially the Surround, but she’s got enough quality to run well, and I think the wet track will ensure this feels like 1400m.
Enormous respect to 4 Libertini (Bet Now: $1.90) for Anthony Cummings. She was so explosive in the early part of the Spring but as the prep went on, she sort of flattened out somewhat, but the freshen up into the Coolmore saw her run an absolute beauty behind the two best 3YO colts as it stands now, Exceedance and Bivouac. Trials have been good…the concern is the wet ground. She gets through it, but is clearly more dynamic on top of the ground.
7 Regimental Band (Bet Now: $61.00) is a quality filly for Kris Lees that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the Spring when placing over 1400m at Flemington during Cup Week behind Banquo. Her two trials leading in have been quite good. Bit of an unknown on wet ground, but you don’t really know until you try, and her best is good enough to be around the mark.
Race 8. (16:30) APOLLO STAKES 1400M
There are a few unknowns here, but one thing you can bank on is 2 Dreamforce (Bet Now: $2.90) running a beauty from the front, and with no real pressure in front potentially, I think he’s the one to beat. Very good animal for John Thompson that resumes, and keep in mind first up last prep he spanked Te Akau Shark. That form is A1 for this, trials have been good, handles wet ground and is a bomb when produced fresh.
9 Verry Elleegant (Bet Now: $6.50), with a wet track in mind, is the pony I’m most wary of here. High class mare for Chris Waller that produced a somewhat mixed Spring Carnival, largely due to firm tracks, something she hates. Has had two trials leading into this prep, and still has that awkward head carry, but has finished off strongly in each trial. Thing that sways me is the wet ground.
4 Life Less Ordinary (Bet Now: $23.00) is the one at value I want to be including in multiples. He didn’t win during the Spring, but going through his form, gee he ran some rippers in high quality races, namely the Cantala and Mackinnon. Thought the trial was good enough, he loves getting his toe into the ground and did produce the best late splits first up last prep behind Dreamforce.
Race 9. (17:10) TRISCAY STAKES 1200M
11 Seasons (Bet Now: $7.00) is a very interesting runner. Les Bridge trains this mare, who hasn’t raced since scoring a pretty strong win at this track/distance back on December 14, proving too good for Misteed, who at the time was flying and since has been competitive at Stakes level. Trial last week she looked to be really trucking behind the speed and she’s a mare who loves wet ground.
2 Sweet Deal (Bet Now: $11.00) looks to be flying for John Thompson. Quality mare that resumes, having not raced since taking out the Tibbie at Newcastle and I always like horses that go for a spell on a high note. Trials have been very sharp, the latest when second to Greysful Glamour. Wet ground is her knock, as is the first up record, but I think she’s on track for her Autumn targets.
12 River Bird (Bet Now: $21.00) can be a big improver back on a wet track. Produced really good late splits first up on a Rosehill bog behind Embracer before racing over this track/distance two weeks ago where she was a tad keen in the run, but still, was a disappointing finale. Down in the weights on a wet track, she can bounce back.
Race 10. (17:50) SCHWEPPES HCP 1300M
Found this a very tough way to end the meeting. I’ll go the way of 3 Cuba (Bet Now: $16.00), who is second up for John Thompson. He was a bit tardy away when resuming over 1200m here a fortnight ago but used up petrol to hold a good spot. Reckon that early burn cost him a placing when fourth to Roheryn. He handles wet ground, presses forward under and fitter, up to 1300m, he’s hard to beat.
7 Royal Celebration (Bet Now: $5.00) is a key threat for me despite a little query on potential second up syndrome. The resumption over 1200m here two weeks ago was an absolute beauty behind Roheryn, and he didn’t have the best of luck in the straight. Should have finished closer. Up to 1300m is a tick, wet ground is a massive tick. Just hoping he improves off that this run and not next time out.
4 Savacool (Bet Now: $26.00) is a quality mare for Chris Waller that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the Premiers Cup during the Spring when a solid fifth to noted swimmer Wu Gok on a very testing track. Two trials have been okay without jumping up and down. Likes Randwick, can sprint well fresh and has a touch of class.
