A nine race card has been set down for Flemington on Saturday for Standish Handicap Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:33) Resimax Rapid Racing 21/1 2yo 1100m
5 Maximillius (Bet Now:Β $3.70 TOP ODDS) is a Price/Kent trained first starter who looks to have jumped out quite well in readiness for start one. Won the second last jumpout before her latest jumpout, she had to chase a tearaway leader but did it quite comfortably under no real pressure. Gets Jamie Kah and has tactical speed it seems, so she’s the one for me.
3 Exonumia (Bet Now:Β $13.00 TOP ODDS) is a Frosted colt for James Cummings on debut. He looked sharp in a recent jumpout win here when on speed and looked to go about his business quite nicely, winning in okay time as well. He looks the pick of the Godolphin duo and overall, this isn’t a strong race, so he’s in the mix.
4 Lofty Strike (Bet Now:Β $12.00 TOP ODDS) is bred to be a star being by Snitzel out of Golden Slipper winner Overreach. His jumpouts suggest he might need time to develop, but stable is having a good little run in recent weeks, as is Jamie Mott, and on breeding alone, he has to be respected.
Race 2. (13:08) Furphy Refreshing Ale (bm70) 1410m
I think there is a bit of quality about 4 Attractable (Bet Now:Β $3.20 TOP ODDS) for Peter Moody. Spanked them fresh at Mornington before taking a sit at Sandown and I thought he was even more impressive in putting the field away, showing good change up speed. Good test here, but confident he measures up.
1 Decent Raine (Bet Now:Β $3.80 TOP ODDS) is getting closer to an end of prep run you would assume given she has been up forever but she continues to hold her form really well. Ran at Caulfield on Boxing Day and I don’t think you need to be a genius to figure out that she wins had she got a clear crack in the straight. Better luck here and I think she goes very close.
5 Capo Strada (Bet Now:Β $7.50 TOP ODDS) hasn’t done too bad of a job this time in for James Cummings. The best of Olly got this guy home at Sandown last time, with the champion hoop really lifting him late. Bit more depth here, doubt he wins, but is one for exotics.
Race 3. (13:43) California Memory (bm100) 1720m
8 Under My Spell (Bet Now:Β $4.000 TOP ODDS) is flying this time in for Nigel Blackiston. Finished best to win fresh on Pakenham Cup Day before going to Caulfield and the mile where she charged from the back, just missing out on picking up American Angel. 1700m is an unknown with her, but she races as if she will be fine.
2 Pancho (Bet Now:Β $5.00 TOP ODDS) should be suited here. Resumed in the Chester Manifold where he paraded like he would need the run and that is how it panned out behind Lighthouse. 1400m isn’t his go. Much better suited up in trip and with the run under the belt, he’ll run a much improved race.
4 Odeon (Bet Now:Β $20.00 TOP ODDS) is third up from a break and should just about be at peak fitness. He comes through the Chester Manifold where he did a bit too much work in the run and tired late behind Lighthouse. Gets to a more suitable trip and finds a very winnable race if he found anything near his best.
Race 4. (14:18) Twilight Payment (bm70) 2000m
9 The Cunning Fox (Bet Now:Β $16.00 TOP ODDS) has to rise a fair bit in depth but he looks a likely type for Patrick Payne. Broke the maiden tag last start over the mile at Benalla where he was always in control near the speed. Just a matter of pushing the button and once Aitken did, it was race over. On breeding, should eat up 2000m and has more upside than most.
This looks a clear target race for 11 Bring The Stars (Bet Now:Β $11.00 TOP ODDS). Narrow second over 2040m at the Valley on November 26 before racing there again over the mile on New Years Eve where he was back near last in the run but finished off strongly behind Marcolt. Like him back up in trip and has improvement to come.
12 Race Against Time (Bet Now:Β $11.00 TOP ODDS) seems a bit on the one paced side so 2000m I do like for him. Team McEvoy trains this son of Brazen Beau, who ran over the mile at the Valley last time where he got a fair way back in the run but liked the way he finished his race off behind Marcolt. That reads okay for this.
Race 5. (14:53) Be A Mate, Nominate Trophy 1410m
1 Justacanta (Bet Now:Β $7.50) has a clear class edge on his rivals. Just depends on where his fitness levels are at. He had a very good Spring, highlighted by a Linlithglow win on Derby Day, ending the prep with an unlucky Kilmore Cup effort. If he’s right to go, I think his class gets him home.
4 Not To Be Mist (Bet Now:Β $2.50) is flying for Nick Ryan. Surprised most with a win two back but proved that was no fluke with a strong third in the Chester Manifold behind a very good mare, Lighthouse. He is seemingly holding his form nicely and with that in mind, he’ll take beating here.
2 Blazejowski (Bet Now:Β $3.80) isn’t the most reliable horse going around but is honest and should be around the mark. Comes through the Chester Manifold where he had a suck run in transit and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off behind Lighthouse. Only beaten 2.4L and I think that reads okay for this.
Race 6. (15:28) Vrc Event Staff (bm70) 1410m
Could be totally off here, but 18 Worthily (Bet Now:Β $12.00) is a good thing IMO. Maher/Eustace trained former UK galloper making his Australian debut after a three run career back home, which included an Epsom Derby. I wanted to see something positive in his latest Cranbourne jumpout, what response would there be when asked for an effort, and it was there to see. Instant, good change up speed before being throttled down late. If he gets a drag into the race from the gate, good luck beating him.
8 Field Of Roses (Bet Now:Β $9.50) is a quality gelding for Phillip Stokes that knuckled down strongly to win fresh at Sandown. He got a fair way back in the run but loved the way he finish his race off to nail them. He’s got enormous upside to come and should get a lovely trailing run from the gate.
9 Fiery Red (Bet Now:Β $17.00) is back on track I feel. He was pretty plain two back at Sandown behind Mister Yu Shu before going to Caulfeild on Boxing Day when near the speed throughout and battled on pretty well in defeat when a close up fourth to Excelida. If he brings that effort here, he’s in the mix.
Race 7. (16:08) Standish Hcp 1200m
10 It’sourtime (Bet Now:Β $4.60) seems to have a real liking for the straight course and hard fit, he’ll do me. Ran last Saturday in a fast run 1100m contest at Caulfield and worked to the line strongly nearer the inside when a narrow third to Scorched Earth. Fitter, up to 1200m and back to a track he loves, he’s on top.
5 Mileva (Bet Now:Β $6.50) has improved big time since joining Phillip Stokes. She was already a Stakes winner when she was trained in SA but now with Stokes this prep, she’s been a multiple Stakes winner, her last start seeing her win the Kensington Stakes at Flemington. 1200m is the query, but hard to knock how she’s going.
11 Rock Prophet (Bet Now:Β $51.00) loves the straight course and I think is a must for exotics. His late splits were super in the Kensington Stakes before dropping back to benchmark grade where he was good late without threatening behind straight track gun Pioneer River. He’ll be near last and charging at the end.
Race 8. (16:50) Stud&stable Staff Awards-bm70 2000m
Pretty much anything Peter Moody saddles up at the moment is winning so with that in mind, on top is 6 Midas Prince (Bet Now:Β $10.00). Big odds when racing over 2000m at Caulfield on Boxing Day but he was excellent from near last in the run, finishing a close up fourth. Off that, you’d think he improves and finds a winnable race.
17 Moktaffy (Bet Now:Β $27.00) is getting better with racing and experience. Former Irish galloper that has had a couple of runs for Chris Waller, resuming with a fifth over 1400m before stepping up to 1500m when ridden positively by Prebble and the horse took advantage with a strong on speed win in what is turning out to be a good form reference. Upside to come and in a leading camp.
5 Convict Sam (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is racing well for Archie Alexander. Strong winner two back at Sandown before going to the Unique Artist race here on New Years Day where he got a mile out of his ground and while he was never a winning threat, his finale was more than sound. Hard to beat if he can settle more handy.
Race 9. (17:35) Resimax Jock. Chall. 21/1-bm78 1610m
7 Sweet Karolina (Bet Now:Β $7.00) clearly on top for me. Team Corstens trained mare that resumed with a strong win at the Valley before going to 1400m here where she lumped 61kg and wasn’t suited by the race shape but was good late behind Stay Gold. Love her up to the mile and third up, should be hard fit.
6 Mrs Sippy (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is a little query at the mile but she is racing in super form at the moment. Good late two back behind Gentleman Roy before sitting wide no cover on New Years Day but surged hard late to just miss out on the win. If she gets a soft run in transit, she’ll take beating here.
13 Lady D’Oro (Bet Now:Β $31.00) is right down in the weights and I think can be a big improver at odds. I liked her in the Stay Gold but whether second up syndrome, the weight, not sure, but she was a tad on the plain side. Tumbles down to 52kg, hard fit and will be strong at the end.
