The two day Scone Carnival concludes this Saturday with a bumper ten race program. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is out three metres from the 800m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Dark Jewel Classic 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Dark Jewel Classic

Race 1. (11:05) Tab Highway Hcp (C3) 1500m
This looks a clear target race for 17 Keen Contributer (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS). Trained on the track and off a luckless run last start, she looks primed. The last start was a Highway three weeks ago and with clear air, she wins instead of a narrow second to Mr Hussill. Fitter and up in trip, she’s the one.
19 Daksha (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS) is a key threat. Contested the Mr Hussill race from three weeks ago in a Highway at Randwick. He got a mile out of his ground but was very good late without threatening when fourth. Third up at 1500m, hard fit and if he can sit closer in the run, he’ll be dangerous.
6 Steplee (Bet Now: $16.00 TOP ODDS) is a horse I have time for. Rod Northam trains this gelding, who was touted as a Country Championships horse, but was set too much of a task in the Tamworth Qualifier before an okay effort at Hawkesbury. Freshened up for his home track Carnival, you’d think he’s ready to go.
Race 2. (11:40) Midway (Bm72) 1700m
11 Outlook (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) might want one more but I think she has come back in really good order for Brad Widdup. Resumed over the mile at Warwick Farm on testing ground and I thought she should have gone close to winning. Just got badly checked and held up when seemingly full of running and was good late when third. 2000m+ third up looks her sweet spot, but I still think she can be effective here.
13 Achira (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) should eat up 1700m on the bigger track. Ran in a Midway two weeks ago at Hawkesbury and she was very good from near last on the turn when third to tough on speed winner Knight. The rise to 1700m I do like and I think she’ll love getting to a big track like Scone.
3 Dr Evil (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) comes here with claims for sure. He found a very thin 64 race last Wednesday at Canterbury, he was backed with confidence late and he gave them a spanking in the testing conditions. Back to 1700m should be fine and with that city win under the belt, he commands respect.
Race 3. (12:15) Pages Event Hire (Bm78) 2200m
5 Arabolini (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS) is an absolute beauty for John Cooper. He puts himself in front, he goes at the one speed and just keeps finding. He was there to be beaten on Anzac Day on the Kenso but he found plenty and fended them off to get the win. Good test here, but has the right racing pattern.
13 Caboche (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) can book himself a Queensland Derby berth with a forward showing here. He ran on the Kenso track on Anzac Day and chased strongly. Just couldn’t quite get there when second to Highballer. Liked a recent tick over trial from him and down in the weights, upside, he appeals.
7 Avion Fury (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) is a knockout hope. Outclassed two back in the Chairmans before going to Hawkesbury where he bumped into a pretty handy stayer in Military Mission. He’s down in the weights, he likes getting his toe in and on wet ground, wouldn’t shock if he won.
Race 4. (12:50) Woodlands Stakes 1100m
Very tricky race to sort out with confidence. A few of these do look to be squibs so want to be on one who will be strong late and 3 In Secret (Bet Now: $2.80 TOP ODDS) is indeed that. Debuted over this trip at Hawkesbury and her late splits were outstanding. Best last 400/200 of the meeting and the second best last 600m of the meeting in a dominant display. Parks off a good speed and will be strong at the end.
5 Luna Rocks (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) will be a key threat from near the front of the pack. Ran at the midweeks at Warwick Farm a couple of weeks back where she led throughout and though challenged early on in the straight, she kicked clear and was far too good for them. She’ll give a good sight here.
16 Mills (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS) will get a suck run from the gate. Team Hawkes trained filly that resumes after debuting at Randwick back on Boxing Day where she was a tad on the plain side behind Russian Conquest but was very raw and new to the caper. Trials leading in have been encouraging and maps well.
Race 5. (13:25) Westpac Rescue Helicopter-Bm72 1300m
16 And We Danced (Bet Now: $7.00) is a filly I am very wary of. Chris Waller trained filly that resumes, having not raced since January 29 at Rosehill when down the track against the Mares behind Centimental. Loved the way she closed off in a recent Rosehill trial and first up at 1300m, I feel there is intent.
11 Sacrimony (Bet Now: $2.80) has returned in super order for Chris Waller. Both runs back have come at Hawkesbury. Should have gone close to winning fresh behind Norwegian Bliss before a peach steer from Tommy Berry, with clear air, saw him finish over the top for a strong win. Heading in the right direction, hard to beat.
5 Astero (Bet Now: $17.00) is knocking on the door to win one. Three weeks between runs when racing at Hawkesbury a fortnight back. He was on speed and gave a strong kick, but couldn’t quite finish it off and was nabbed late by in form mare Norwegian Bliss. He’ll be around the mark once again.
Race 6. (14:00) Denise's Joy Stakes 1100m
8 Stellar Magic (Bet Now: $26.00) should appreciate a fast run 1100m. Resumed in the Mick Dittman several weeks ago where she was nearer the inside and held up. Should have finished a touch closer but thought she had her chance when fourth to all the way winner Rubiquitous. Fitter, off a fast speed on firmer footing, I think she’ll run a beauty.
5 A Very Fine Red (Bet Now: $5.50) is several weeks between runs for Mark Newnham, having not raced since the PJ Bell when struggling on the heavy track behind Heresy, but far from disgraced. Trialled up well last week to my eye and back on firmer footing, I think she deserves another chance.
15 Rubinocchi (Bet Now: $16.00) is a sharp short course filly for Joe Pride that will put herself on speed and look to give her all. Had the track pattern in her corner somewhat fresh at Canterbury but even allowing for that, she spanked them from the front and was impressive. Confident she measures up.
Race 7. (14:35) Luskin Star Stakes 1300m
3 Tycoonist (Bet Now: $4.60) is a quality animal for Chris Waller that was ridden with intent when resuming in the Gold Rush at Hawkesbury. In a driving go, he was able to wear down speed demon Malkovich. He’s got good improvement to come and the rise to 1300m, fitter, all points to him running well again.
4 Andermatt (Bet Now: $2.00) is a very progressive sprinter for James Cummings. Three weeks between runs since giving his rivals a spanking at Randwick, lapping up the bog in another dominant display. There is talk of him being a potential Everest contender…he’d want to be putting this field away to let that talk continue.
14 Much Much Better (Bet Now: $11.00) lacks the class of the first two, but he has racing style and is right down in the weights. Tough on speed win from him fresh at Randwick, fighting them off gamely late. Down to 53kg, he’ll slide forward from the wide gate and give cheek.
Race 8. (15:10) Dark Jewel Classic 1400m
16 Le Gai Soleil (Bet Now: $4.20) on top. This mare seems more explosive on the fresh side, so I like that the stable has given her a break after being a failure at the mile during the Sydney Autumn, which followed an arrogant first up win. Trials after the last run and leading into this have been outstanding and I can see her exploding over the top.
15 Brookspire (Bet Now: $7.00) deserves another chance. Chris Waller trained mare that looked a good thing when resuming in the Hawkesbury Crown but she let me and punters down badly with a really plain finale behind Exotic Ruby. She’s too good of a mare to sack off one run, so giving her another look.
3 Monegal (Bet Now: $31.00) comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since the Neville Sellwood where she, like most, couldn’t pick their feet up on the Heavy 254 at Rosehill behind Mount Popa. Fresh legs back to 1400m, she loves getting her toe in and she’s genuine, so she’s one to include for wider multiples.
Race 9. (15:50) Ortensia Stakes 1100m
1 Eleven Eleven (Bet Now: $7.00) looks ready to rock and roll fresh with an eye towards Brisbane. He ended last prep on a high when taking out the Magic Millions Cup, continuing his love affair with Queensland. Loved the way he closed off in a trial over 1200m, so the grounding is there to run well fresh at 1100m, and he has class.
3 Malkovich (Bet Now: $3.80) will jump on speed and prove hard to run down. That was the case two weeks ago in the Gold Rush at Hawkesbury and he looked home for the most part, but couldn’t quite finish it off when nailed late by Tycoonist. He’ll look the winner for the most part…last bit will test.
6 Lord Olympus (Bet Now: $11.00) is in with a shout. He was very good fresh behind Andermatt before racing last Saturday in the Takeover Target where he had no luck in a messy race won by Blondeau, who got up nearer the inside and avoided the trouble. Back up on wet ground, he’ll firm up and prove to be a threat.
Race 10. (16:30) Yarraman Park (Bm78) 1100m
1 Athelric (Bet Now: $2.20) is a safe option in the get out for James Cummings. He has won his past two, both wins coming over 1000m at Warwick Farm on testing ground but he has been dominant and dominant against the older horses a big tick. Gets in really well after the claim, should stalk the speed and prove hard to hold out.
12 American President (Bet Now: $4.80) has a few loose screws upstairs but there is no denying he has talent. Couple of remarkable wins in recent times where he has come to the outside fence and sprouted wings. There is more depth here, but he’s a winner who loves wet ground.
17 Two Up (Bet Now: $13.00) is a very honest animal for David Atkins. Just finding it hard to win but he’s racing in good form. Ran at the midweeks at Warwick Farm last start and tried his guts out again, just couldn’t quite finish it off when a game second to Cafe Royal. One for exotics.
