14/5/2022 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Belmont, Roma Cup day

The Belmont racing season kicks off this Saturday where it is Roma Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

1 Top Of The Pops (Bet Now: $1.75) picks himself. Dan Morton trained juvenile that is 2/2 to start his career, both at 1200m. Debuted with a dominant win at Pinjarra before going to Ascot where the race shape was against him but he showcased his class to knuckle down late and win. Love him up in trip, bigger track…he’s a good thing.

5 Miss Drakova (Bet Now: $3.30) should be suited up to 1400m. This filly ran over 1100m at Ascot last Saturday where she got a fair way back in the run and was never really a threat but liked the way she finished her race off when a close up third. Good late splits there, so you’d think the rise in trip suits.

3 The Mighty Butch (Bet Now: $31.00) is one I could entertain for wider exotics. This Martin Allan trained juvenile resumed over 1000m at Pinjarra where he was quite one paced when asked for the effort and just whacked away, racing like he wants further, which he gets here, and outside the favourite, the depth is on the thin side.

2 God Has Chosen (Bet Now: $1.80) has a bit on these, even allowing for the weight. Sat on a very slow speed at Ascot three weeks ago and in a fighting go, he wore down Staralign in a good battle to the peg. He’s hard fit now and getting to the mile, he’s clearly the one to beat and IMO is a good thing.

3 Watch Me Dance (Bet Now: $4.20) hasn’t won in a long time but has come back in pretty good order for Steve Wolfe. Ran in the Sheila Gwynne Classic last time out when near the speed throughout and though safely held, she battled away really well when third to Amasenus. The 1600m is a query, but has class.

4 Friaresque (Bet Now: $10.00) should be suited back in trip. Ran over 1800m in the Diggers Cup at Ascot where he tried hard, as he often does, but I think 1800m at this trip sees him out when midfield behind Sentimental Queen. Back to the mile with Blinkers back on, he’s here to run an improved race.

7 Devoted (Bet Now: $2.15) has a class edge and I think that gets him home here fresh for Michael Grantham. He resumes for a new camp after formerly being with Team Williams. His last run came in the WA Guineas when a game third to Treasured Star. Trials leading in have been super and 1400m fresh tells me he’s ready to go.

4 Stay Safe (Bet Now: $4.80) is another quality three year old that resumes. First up for Bernie Miller, having not raced since the Summer Carnival when placing in the Sir Ernest Lee Steere. Couple of quiet trials to get ready, and not a noted fresh horse, but does bring a decnet amount of class.

1 Mr Delegator (Bet Now: $9.50) is a fascinating runner. Todd Harvey trained gelding that is first up after a solid Summer prep, which ended with a midfield effort in the Ascot Gold Cup, which ensured a Perth Cup tilt was put to bed and spelled soon after. Didn’t mind the way he went in a recent Lark Hill trial and if he’s ready to go, he’ll take beating from near the speed.

Keen on 7 Lord Lonsdale (Bet Now: $4.00) for Kieran McDonagh. Three weeks between runs since contesting the Autumn Final at Ascot over 1200m where he got a mile out of his ground but loved the way he finished his race off behind Yoyo’s. He’s screaming out of a 1400m horse ready to win and he gets that chance here.

6 Kolchino (Bet Now: $6.50) deserves another chance. Darren Taylor trained gelding that resumed over this trip at Ascot on Anzac Day and I thought he had every chance in a pretty plain return I thought behind a handy horse in Dee Keepa. His win came at this track so perhaps the bigger surroundings and fitter can see him bounce back.

3 Point Taken (Bet Now: $10.00) has a good record at Belmont and I think can run a much improved race at odds. She contested the Yoyo’s race mentioned above where she got back in the run and was never a factor in somewhat of a forgive run. Better suited here, so can certainly entertain her for wider multiples.

12 Zephyra (Bet Now: $4.40) looks Stakes class. Simon Miller trained filly that debuted at Ascot where she got back in the run but presented wider and in a matter of a couple of strides, she put the race to bed, clocking the best late splits of the meeting in an electric debut. 1400m on the bigger track, it all points to her.

6 The Velvet Queen… (Bet Now: $3.40) is this D-Day for her? Potentially. Resumed two weeks ago at Ascot over this trip where she got a fair way back in the run and was never really a factor, but was solid late in the piece when second to My Mate. I think the bigger track will suit. Just depends where she gets to in the run from the draw.

10 Dash Of Brandy (Bet Now: $61.00) looks to be in for a good prep. Resumed over 1200m at Pinjarra and was a real eye catcher from near last on the turn when third to Stylax. Whether she wants one more, not entirely sure, but I do think fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks.

11 Madam Kisses (Bet Now: $8.00) looks an above average filly for Bernie Miller and confident she can measure up in town. Not sure she was 100% happy down the straight at Pinjarra last start but class got her home and she was too good, just. I reckon a fast run 1000m here suits, back on a bending track and should be strong at the end.

3 Go Forward (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Team Gangemi trained son of Written Tycoon that resumes. He hasn’t raced since New Years Day at Ascot when far from disgraced in a much stronger race than this when fourth to Acromantula. Just one trial to get ready, but the form around him does read quite well.

8 She’s Enchanted (Bet Now: $10.00) resumes after 14 months off so I find her a fascinating runner. Last time she raced was March 20 last year when placing behind a now multple Stakes winner in Amasenus, so the form clearly reads well and loved the way she went in a recent trial. Market will tell you if she’s ready to go.

9 Dark Lass (Bet Now: $11.00) on top in a competitive 1MW race. Formerly with Team Williams, this mare now finds herself with Michael Grantham. I reckon she will be better suited over a touch further but she has enough class to measure up fresh. She does go well early on in a prep and her trials indicate she’s enjoying life in a new home. Keen to see how she goes.

2 Ginger Green (Bet Now: $7.50) is racing very well at the moment for Steve Wolfe and has to be respected. Market wanted him when racing over the mile at Ascot two weeks ago and it proved spot on. In a driving go, he finished best and was impressive. Has run well at Belmont before and hard to knock the way he’s racing.

6 Pambella (Bet Now: $9.00) deserves another chance. Not sure what to make of her run two weeks ago. Had a suck run and then got badly held up. In saying that, she was out in time to let down but I thought she was quite plain late. Field shy maybe? So drawing out could be a blessing and Chris Parnham sticks.

2 Elite Street (Bet Now: $2.40) is the best sprinter in WA so he has to be the one to beat here. Resumed with a bang to win the Northam Stakes first up, charging late from off the speed to score a big win given the race wasn’t run to suit. Fitter, up to 1200m, at WFA, it’s hard seeing him getting beat.

16 Amasenus (Bet Now: $8.50) is the hard fit/in form sprinter. Simon Miller trained mare that is 2/2 this time in, winning fresh on Good Friday in the Marjorie Charleson before bolting up in the Sheila Gwynne, albeit in races easier than this, but she has a fitness edge, loves Belmont and maps super from the gate.

10 Free Trade (Bet Now: $41.00) is a very interesting runner. Michael Lane trains this gelding, who is just under 12 months between runs, having not raced since the Belmont Sprint when beating one home behind The Velvet King. Two trials leading in have been strong and Chris Parnham booked, I think there might be a bit of intent.

Going to give 10 Gunmetal Grey (Bet Now: $34.00) another chance. This mare resumed over 1000m two weeks ago at Ascot. She got caught wide no cover for the trip and tired late when fourth to Warm N Fuzzy. Fitter and up to 1200m, bigger track, she has enough class/quality to bounce back.

4 Timely Outburst (Bet Now: $4.50) is a promising mare for Stephen Miller. This four year old resumed three weeks ago over 1000m where she led throughout and didn’t give punters a moment of concern, giving her rivals zero look in, winning comfortably. Harder here, but she’s got enormous upside and a good racing style.

Up to 1200m is a big tick for 7 Mercanto (Bet Now: $6.00). He resumed in the Timely Outburst race mentioned above where he was no hope given the race shape but really liked the way he finished his race off behind the speedy mare. The rise to 1200m helps his cause and hopefully the tempo will be more genuine.

NEXT BEST: Race Eight Number 2 Elite Street

LONG SHOT: Race Nine Number 10 Gunmetal Grey
