14/12/2019 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Morphettville, Christmas Handicap day

Eight races have been set down for Morphettville this Saturday where it is Christmas Handicap Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

Going the way of the All Too Hard filly 8 She’s Tricky (Bet Now: $3.20) for the Will Clarken stable, who is flying at the moment. This girl trialled a couple of weeks ago over 1000m at Strathalbyn when settling last in the small field before easing wider on the turn and under no riding closed off really nicely to run third. Looks a nice type so I’ll lean her way.

1 Stenmark (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained colt that has finished runner up in both career outings, each race coming here. The debut was on the Parks track when second to Flinders River before racing at this track/distance and just failing to win when second to Unstoppabelle. Has the hard race fitness/experience and stable is having a really good run at the moment.

2 Extra Time (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Shooting To Win on debut for the Macdonald/Gluyas stable. This bloke led all the way to win a trial over 1000m at Strathalbyn under Jerry Chau and despite being somewhat pushed out, he responded and looked pretty good. Stable should always be respected with their juveniles, especially when they trial well.

Looks like a trip to Adelaide to get an easy kill when it comes to 3 Desert Dreamer (Bet Now: $2.50), who resumes for the Maher/Eustace stable. First up, having not raced since July 10 at Sandown in a 2YO race when on speed and tiring late behind Parmie but did choke down hence why the Tongue Tie is on, and his recent Terang jumpout was outstanding. Should be winning.

Returning to Adelaide dropping a fair bit in depth should suit 2 Hearty Lass (Bet Now: $2.80) for the John Hyam stable. This filly had two runs during the Melbourne Spring and while she was outclassed, she was far from disgraced, the second run coming down the Flemington straight on Cup Day behind the above average Garner. Hard to beat off her previous form.

5 Kayseri (Bet Now: $9.00) is three weeks between runs for the Jolly camp since racing over 1250m on the Parks track when back in the small field and couldn’t really sprint when the dash went on but stuck on and was okay in defeat when fourth to Wings Of Pastrami. Back to a fast run 1100m I like and is better suited on the bigger track I suggest.

Looks really good placement by Lloyd Kennewell when it comes to 6 Cosmic Rhapsody (Bet Now: $3.60), who won his opening three runs for the prep before racing at the Valley two weeks ago when getting back near last from the wide gate and while he finished a few lengths off Rubisaki, he was far from disgraced. Gate one, tumbles in weight and this is a thin race.

1 Barood (Bet Now: $11.00) gets another chance. Sue Murphy trains this son of Choisir, who ran on the Parks track a few weeks ago when sitting last in the run off a moderate tempo and while it seemed like he was okay, considering the winner has went just over 33 for the final 600m, those behind had no chance. He gets another chance and would love to see him sit closer in the run.

Back to 1100m I like for 5 Pale Ale (Bet Now: $11.00), who is a beauty and rarely runs a bad race. Ran over 1200m here two weeks ago when sitting off a good speed and trying hard, but just failing to see it out when fifth. Back in trip looks a good recipe for him and I think if they press forward early, he can land on speed without doing too much work.

Looks a lovely race for the McEvoy mare 9 Shrouded In Mist (Bet Now: $3.30). She can be a bit hit and miss at times, but her last few runs have had plenty of merit to them, the latest coming over this track/distance a fortnight back when well off the speed throughout and was held up at times before getting clear late and surging hard to just miss. Arguably should have won that race. She can go one better.

4 Tongsai Boss (Bet Now: $3.30) is a consistent animal for John Hyam but his last couple have been somewhat disappointing, the latest seeing him run third to Dexter You Devil from two weeks ago. Was three weeks between runs, but did get a cheap run on speed and I thought he had every chance in a disappointing effort. Can win, but couldn’t back him.

There are a couple of versions of 5 Borris In Ossory (Bet Now: $7.00) but his best is good enough to run well. Sat on speed in the Clare Cup last time and gave a really good kick when the sprint went on and didn’t turn it up at all when second to Wanted By All. Back to the mile I like, rolls along on speed and will give them something to chase.

Looking at this race with Tatalina out. Tricky race but going the way of 7 Blue Bear (Bet Now: $8.00). He was very good three back over 1800m here behind Korodon before going back to Melbourne for his next two, the latest at Sandown when a couple of lengths away from Aussie Nugget in what looked a decent race on paper. Has gate one and with weight relief, I’ll be in his corner.

4 Dr Dependable (Bet Now: $3.20) has been up forever for the Macdonald/Gluyas team but gee he’s racing well. Was bursting to win a race and it finally came on the Parks track three weeks ago when afforded a very soft lead and once that happened, those behind had no chance. Harder here, and back in trip, but hard fit and in ripping form.

Up to 2000m should suit 8 Eperdument (Bet Now: $11.00), who ran over 1800m here two weeks ago and you could make a small case that he should have won. Got badly held when wanting to build the revs and by the time he got clear, the race was all over. Has a soft gate to use and I do like the booking of Cory Parish. Likeable against this lot.

2 Be My Star (Bet Now: $3.50) is a leading chance here. Big win from last to win two starts ago on the Parks track at Morphettville before going to the 1000m at the Valley two weeks ago where nothing really went right for her in the run and with clear air, I think she goes close to winning when fourth to Can’tforgetyou. Gets clear air here and is hard to hold out.

4 Counter Drive (Bet Now: $7.00) is a very reliable gelding for the Macdonald/Gluyas team that is a safe option in a tricky race. He resumed over 1000m at Murray Bridge when chasing the speedy leader before picking it up, taking the lead and kicking, but was no match late for Shamino, who would be odds on here. Has that run under the belt, is a winner second up and likes racing at this track.

12 Atomic Lokade (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Grant Kluske trained mare who can be hit and miss at times but when she’s on, she’s certainly city class and can beat these. She ran over 1000m at Balaklava last start when back near last in the small field before peeling wider and gee she let down with a strong finale to win impressively. Has run well in town before and this is a winnable race.

Want to give 6 Ef Troop (Bet Now: $3.60) another chance. I was keen on him at Ballarat a few weeks ago but he just looked to be a bit bogged down by the 59kg and I think the track raced more like a soft 5/6 based on times, and he is a horse who hates racing on affected ground. Better for that run I’d suggest and his best is clearly good enough to take this out.

Going to give 8 Columbia (Bet Now: $7.50) another look for Will Clarken. Was several weeks between runs when contesting the City Of Marion a fortnight back when off the speed and loomed to win when Pannell presented him clear air, but he couldn’t quite finish it off well enough when a close up sixth to Benz. Fitter, he can bounce back.

4 Zalmona (Bet Now: $18.00) can win this if he brings his best, his best seeing him push Despatch all the way during the Autumn in the McKay. Closed off well fresh before going to the City Of Marion where he was back nearer the inside from the soft gate and couldn’t really get into the race behind Benz. Fast run 1200m looks up his alley. Hopefully is ridden cold and can get to the outside.

He’s burned holes in my pockets in both runs back from a spell but I’ll be buttering up with 3 Naseeb (Bet Now: $4.40). Really liked the way he found the line fresh at Naracoorte before going to Murray Bridge when a notable drifter in betting as the support came for Ice Ghost and that market move was spot on as Ice Ghost got the job done while Nasseb was back, pulling, and really only got warm late. Proven at this track/distance so want to give him another chance.

4 Ice Ghost… (Bet Now: $3.20) can he repeat the dose from first up? Handy gelding for Gordon Richards who was backed as if unbeatable when resuming over 1400m at Murray Bridge and those that knew were rewarded as he got the suck run just behind the speed and when asked for an effort, he put them away and was impressive. If he continues on from that, he’ll go close to beating these.

11 Bwuva (Bet Now: $23.00) isn’t the most reliable horse going around, but noteworthy are a couple of things here. Firstly, he was solid in defeat last start at Balaklava given he did work in the run from the wide gate and had to lump 58.5kg. Gets really good weight relief here and also note that he was scratched from a weak race on Wednesday for this.

BEST BET: Race Two Number 3 Desert Dreamer

NEXT BEST: Race Four Number 9 Shrouded In Mist

LONG SHOT: Race Five Number 7 Blue Bear
