Nine races will be run and won at Randwick this Saturday and despite a little hangover numbers wise last week at the Farm, the numbers are strong this week, especially in the quaddie legs. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (13:00) : TAB Rewards Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 5 Piracy (Bet Now: $4.20) is a talented colt that resumes for John O’Shea and Godolphin. He debuted in the Breeders Plate where he was hard in the market but was a major flop behind Khan. In saying that, he did have excuses given he worked hard to sit outside the speed into the strong headwind and that sealed his fate. Loved his trial last week and from what I’ve seen in the trials, he’ll be a beauty.
Big Danger: 2 Menari (Bet Now: $1.70) is another of these Gerald Ryan Snitzel youngsters that looks well above average and this colt could be the pick of them. He ran in a trial at Rosehill last Tuesday where he led all the way and absolutely trotted up under Innes Jr to win by a space under triple wraps. Looks a ready made juvenile who will take some beating.
Long Shot: 4 Newburgh (Bet Now: $5.00) is an All Too Hard colt that debuts for Team Hawkes. He trialled well last week at Rosehill before trialling again on Monday Randwick where he sat back in the trial and finished off nicely lately under minimal pressure when third to Hualalai. Looks a nice type for the future but I think he can measure up here.
Race Two (13:40) : #theraces Handicap (78) 1200m:
Back Me: 4 Raiment (Bet Now: $2.15) ran over 1200m at Canterbury a fortnight back where she was a clear favourite and popular with the punters but if you backed her, it was just a nightmare to watch given she was bailed away behind the leader and couldn’t get a split until it was far too late yet she charged to get very close to In Her Time. Big surroundings that Randwick offers will suit her nicely and third up, she should be ready.
Big Danger: 5 Modha (Bet Now: $4.80) chased hard first up at Canterbury when running second to in form mare Improvement before going to Warwick Farm where she was ridden a treat by Innes Jr and the mare charged hard late to nab Chosen Prayer. That form has been franked with Chosen Prayer winning last Saturday. Had some good form in the Winter and she looks to have returned in fab order.
Long Shot: 8 Alaskan Wolf (Bet Now: $26.00) is a talented mare that makes her Randwick debut for Norm Rogers. Her last couple of efforts at Warwick Farm have been more than tidy, the latest coming over 1200m on December 28 when not far away from Dorf Star. Down on the minimum now and gets gate one. Knockout chance at odds.
Race Three (14:15) : ALM Handicap (72) 1200m:
Back Me: 5 Echo Effect (Bet Now: $8.50) is a horse I have a fair bit of time for. Exciting Reset gelding for Kristen Buchanan who put together three sharp wins before being tested in better company when contesting the Heritage and he was far from disgraced behind Guard Of Honour after sitting wide no cover for the trip. Looked to trial really well behind Supreme Effort recently and I am quite keen on him here each way.
Big Danger: 7 Ghostly (Bet Now: $4.60) is a talented type for Godolphin and John O’Shea who was given an absolute peach from Avdulla to win fresh at Warwick Farm, saving ground nearer the inside before bursting clear and dashing hard to record a dominant maiden triumph. Draws a lovely gate, has upside and should take some beating.
Long Shot: 9 Tornado Of Souls (Bet Now: $7.00) was hard in the market when debuting at Wyong and despite wobbling a touch on the home turn, once Angland pushed the button he showed a lovely turn of foot and dashed clear to win quite impressively and run sharp time. Runner up has won since and this does appear to have enormous scope.
Race Four (14:50) : TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1400m:
Back Me: 11 Mar Nero (Bet Now: $16.00) is a talented mare for Cameron Crockett who produced brilliant turns of speed to win two races on the bounce before racing at Orange last time out where she just got too far back in the run and closed off hard behind Drill Master. Stable have had success in the Highway recently and this mare will love the Randwick 1400m.
Big Danger: 1 Cogliere (Bet Now: $3.50) looked to trial well on a couple of occasions prior to resuming on Boxing Day here in a four horse field where he sat on speed and though running last of four, his effort wasn’t too bad behind Tactical Advantage. Drops big time in depth here, and though hurt at the weights, he does have really good city form from the Winter.
Long Shot: 9 Love None (Bet Now: $18.00) chased hard to win fresh at Muswellbrook before going to Narromine where she got back in the run and closed off nicely late when second to Handful Of Aces. Third up, so she should be ready fitness wise and the stable doesn’t bring them to town unless they can measure up.
Race Five (15:25) : Maroubra Mile 1600m:
Back Me: 7 Gold Ambition (Bet Now: $2.15) looks ready to win a race and I think he gets his chance here. Ran over 1550m at Canterbury last time out where he attempted to lead all the way under Deanne Panya and gave a really good kick in the straight but just couldn’t hold out the finishing burst of Loyalty Man. Suited at the Randwick mile and I think ridden with cover, he’ll be more effective.
Big Danger: 1 Religify (Bet Now: $2.80) looks a suspect at the mile but gets the map favours. He hasn’t raced since December 24 over 1400m at Rosehill where he was three wide no cover on speed, a brutal speed also…yep, he had to fade out of it and rightfully did. Should get a soft lead here and the claim for McDougall brings this horse right into play.
Long Shot: 5 Harada Bay (Bet Now: $4.20) ran third last time out at Doomben in a race won by L’Entrecote and his effort in defeat was very good given he too got back near last and had to make up a stack of ground, which he did, and ended up being just over a length away from the winner. Stable should always be respected when they travel their runners and this isn’t a strong race.
Race Six (16:00) : TAB Handicap (85) 2400m:
Back Me: 4 Thewayweare (Bet Now: $5.50) is a stayer in super form at the moment for John Thompson. He toughed it out strongly to win two back at Warwick Farm before racing over this track/distance on Boxing Day where he was ridden aggressively by Brenton Avdulla and the horse/rider just gave nothing a look in, going on to win the race quite comfortably. Bit more depth here, but he should control the race again from the front and take a stack of beating.
Big Danger: 5 Admiral Jello (Bet Now: $4.20) bolted up over 1900m at Canterbury two back before racing over the same track/distance a fortnight back where he got back in the run and chased hard but couldn’t quite reel in Burning Energy. He gives the impression he will appreciate the distance increase, as should the bigger surroundings Randwick has to offer.
Long Shot: 6 Hardern (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Victorian visitor with really good form behind him. Stuck on well in inferior ground three back at Pakenham behind Gallic Chieftain before a strong tough win at Geelong. He then went to Sandown where he sat near the speed and whacked away gamely behind subsequent Bagot winner Annus Miralibis. Stable have good success when they travel and this horse does find a very winnable assignment.
Race Seven (16:40) : Schweppes Handicap (83) 1400m:
Back Me: 6 Invincible Knight (Bet Now: $4.80) had confident market support late when resuming over this track/distance on Boxing Day and it was left to a lovely patient ride from gun apprentice Blaike McDougall to sprout wings out wide and nab I Am Impressed in the last couple of strides. zero from three second up, but that fresh effort was really encouraging and McDougall remains on and his 3kg claim is very handy.
Big Danger: 4 Sabino Speed (Bet Now: $7.50) ran over this track/distance four weeks back where he was kept safe in the market and it was left to a lovely on speed steer from Peter Wells to kick clear in the straight and then fend off the strong late challenge of Careless. That horse has run well since so the form has stood up, he handles all conditions and does tend to race best with the break between runs.
Long Shot: 15 Arigold (Bet Now: $17.00) closed off strongly two back over 1400m at Kembla Grange before stepping up to the 1550m at Canterbury where he sat last in the run before Adkins presented him at the right time and once he pushed the button, he surged hard late to get the win. Back to 1400m is a slight worry, but he will be strong late and is right down in the weights.
Race Eight (17:20) : Tab.com.au Handicap (78) 1100m:
Back Me: 8 Badajoz (Bet Now: $3.80) is a talented four year old gelding that resumes for John O’Shea and Godolphin. He ran really well during the Winter in Sydney before racing a couple of times at Flemington where he ran home late down the straight behind surprise winner Astro Castro before bumping into Camdus over 1400m. Loved his two trials leading in, both in solid time, so he’s had a good grounding to run a beauty fresh.
Big Danger: 13 Machinegun Jubs (Bet Now: $3.70) is an above average galloper for Angela Davies that resumed at Warwick Farm and just had no luck in the run home when appearing to have plenty to offer, eventually getting clear to run second. Collett is in Stakes winning form, he draws a soft gate, has upside and stable has a lethal strike rate. Must include.
Long Shot: It will be one of the great training efforts by David Smith if 7 Schumacher (Bet Now: $34.00) salutes. The now eight year has clearly had issues because he hasn’t raced since 2014, but he looks forward and ready to run a beauty off the back of a couple of sharp trial wins in the bush. Definite market watch.
Race Nine (17:55) : Hyland Race Colours Handicap (78) 1600m:
Back Me: 9 Liapari (Bet Now: $12.00) for me at a price in the get out. He ran over 1900m at Canterbury last time out where he got well back in the run and closed off his race okay but just didn’t quite see the trip out behind Burning Energy. Back to the Randwick mile looks ideal and he draws to get the gun run behind a strong tempo. Can certainly entertain him at a price.
Big Danger: 2 Dark Eyes (Bet Now: $6.00) looked in need of the run when resuming at Canterbury and finishing down the track behind subsequent Saturday winner Deploy. He then ran over 1400m here on the public holiday meeting last Monday where he chased a genuine tempo and was never really going to get there until the final couple of strides. Should have upside left and is suited at the mile.
Long Shot: 5 Hand From Above (Bet Now: $6.00) looks ready to win now third up from a break. He was completely luckless fresh behind Isorich before stepping up in trip where he again got back in the run, but this time luck did go his way and he had clear running but just had no answer late for Louie Sea Kay, who had all the momentum out wide. Third up, 1600m Randwick, okay in at the weights…looks extremely hard to hold out.
BEST BET: Race Eight Number 8 Badajoz
NEXT BEST: Race Four Number 11 Mar Nero
