13/5/2023 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Belmont, Belmont Sprint day

The Belmont racing season kicks off this Saturday with a nine race meeting, headlined by the Belmont Sprint (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Siding with 8 Petula (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for Simon Miller. This filly was backed with confidence when debuting last Wednesday at Ascot and she was impressive, leading throughout under Carbery and was there to be run down, but she showed good change up speed and was dominant in the run to the line. That was over 1100m and off the win, 1300m is fine and is the one to beat IMO.

6 Pin Deep (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of Deep Field for Adam Durrant that is on debut. He’s had three trials to get ready for start one, the latest trial coming at Lark Hill last week where he ran a narrow second and seemingly moved quite nicely to my eye in decent enough time. Well grounded for the debut and overall, the depth here isn’t overly strong.

1 Ancient Guidance (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is in with a shout at a likely decent price. Thrown in the deep end two weeks back in the Sires at Ascot and while he was safely held by Super Smink, I thought he was far from disgraced in defeat, beaten just over five lengths. Back to this level, depth not as deep, if he runs up to last time, he can pinch a first four spot.

6 Yoyo’s (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top in a tricky race. Peter Fernie trained mare that should appreciate a rise to 1200m after racing over 1000m at Ascot two weeks ago where the market said she was quite friendless but despite that, she got back and worked home with real purpose late in the piece behind Valency. Harvey sticks from last time, which is a good lead, and off that run, 1200m is ideal.

3 Lucky Landing (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of Mahuta that is a key chance for Michael Lane. Three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at Ascot where the track pattern was against him so be forgiving of the somewhat flat finale behind No Dice. He is a track/distance winner and prior efforts suggested a win is near, so don’t dismiss him.

2 Mordor (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and give a sight. He ran in the No Dice race from three weeks back where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a solid kick but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to No Dice. He does save his best for 1200m but third up from a break, he should just about be at peak fitness. Must for exotics.

Back to 1400m is a big tick for 3 Rusty Dreams (Bet Now:  $SP.00). She ran over the mile at Ascot last time where she was heavily backed but after leading, she didn’t find much and was comfortably held on the line when third to Catch These Hands. Pike takes over, back to 1400m a big tick…she can bounce back if there is petrol left in the tank.

1 Catch These Hands (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is absolutely flying this time in for Steve Wolfe. He has won 4/4 this time in, the last three wins being at the mile. The last two have come at Ascot, the latest win being three weeks ago when too good for Mack Mack, who franked the form with a comfortable win last week. Back to 1400m I find interesting but with a genuine tempo, he’ll be strong at the end.

5 Zouboltz (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is racing like 1400m will be ideal. Last couple of runs have come over 1200m at Ascot, the latest being two weeks back where he was building the revs nicely but got blocked late and it ended up being an ugly watch. Should have been in the finish, so up to 1400m and mapping to do no work, he is in with a shout.

9 First Encounter (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is lightly raced but is certainly heading in the right direction for Adam Durrant. He ran in a 1400m maiden last Thursday at Pinjarra and the win was enormous given he gave them a decent head start, albeit off a hot speed, and savaged the line late for a big win. Bred to appreciate 1600m and off the win last week, the trip is fine, and the depth here is a bit on the thin side.

5 Flash Ducati (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to be in for a really good prep. He was a big price when resuming over 1400m a fortnight back at Ascot but I thought he was one of the better runs of the meeting, closing off with real purpose from the back when second to Mojo Rhythm. If you can trust that run and expect natural improvement, gee he appeals. The knock is the $81 SP he had, suggesting he was there to have a look only.

8 Ace Command (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has a good track/distance record so I wouldn’t be dismissing him. He ran over the mile at Pinjarra just over two weeks back, and I didn’t think he was too bad in defeat considering the little luck he had in the straight, finding clear air when it was all over. This race, as a whole, is on the thin side, so he can definitely measure up.

Not much of a race. Landed with 6 Desert Vixen (Bet Now:  $SP.00) but not a great deal of confidence. Simon Miller trains this mare, who ran over 1400m at Ascot last Saturday where she got back in the run and was never really a threat but did make up headway and wasn’t too bad in the run to the line behind Civvy Street. Like her back in trip and can settle much closer in the run.

1 Thorogood (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a definite market watch. David Harrison trained gelding that resumes, having not raced since March 4 when on speed and fighting on pretty well in defeat over the mile when fourth to Currimundi. Resumes without a trial but is a good fresh horse and does tend to save his best for Belmont. I’d watch the market and see what it does.

9 Canny Coni (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a lightly raced mare that has good upside/progression compared to most engaged. Both runs back from a spell have come at Pinjarra, the latest run being over 1400m when just off the speed before being presented wider and tried hard but was no match late, running a narrow second to What A Prince. Unbeaten at the trip and with an ideal map, she is in with a shout.

9 Mack Mack (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has been up a while but is holding his form superbly. Looked a moral last Wednesday over the mile at Ascot and under a peach from Pike, he lobbed into a beaut spot behind the speed before angling clear at the top of the straight and he made a mess of them for a commanding win. That was a thin race but the confidence is back up so getting back to Saturday grade, he’ll take beating.

6 Sessions Peak (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is hard to beat here for Colin Webster. He is looking to make it three wins on the bounce, with the two wins coming over the mile at Ascot, the latest being two weeks ago when back, wide with cover, before being presented wider and finished best for a strong win. He has a great track/distance record and the way he’s racing, he rates highly.

7 Kaymay (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is just under a year between wins but Susan Olive has this mare going really well. Three weeks between runs racing at this trip at Ascot where she had the suck run behind the speed and tried to get involved but given the track was playing up/in, she couldn’t quite get involved when fourth to the in form No Change. Not sure she wins, but a first four threat.

4 Catalpa (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a beauty for Team Williams and it’s hard to get away from him. He resumed two weeks ago at Ascot where he got into a lovely spot near the speed under Campbell before finding clear air and he got better as the race went on, drawing clear to win nicely. Good second up record and he has more upside than most. Plenty of boxes ticked, happy to be in his corner.

6 Trade War (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Trade Fair gelding for Michael Lane that resumes. He hasn’t raced since New Years Eve at Pinjarra when back, wide with cover over 1400m, and worked to the line pretty well I thought behind the then in form Real Danger. Good fresh horse that has trialled up nicely in readiness for the return and maps to get an ideal run in transit.

5 Position Of Power (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is first up for David Harrison and while his best days are likely behind him, he finds a winnable race if he found somewhere near his best. His last run came on November 12 at Ascot when back last in the run and failed to fire behind Megazone. Saves his best for Belmont and thought the Lark Hill trial last week was a pretty good piece of work. One for exotics I’d suggest.

Hard to get away from the Team Casey gelding 3 Dom To Shoot (Bet Now:  $SP.00). Lot of quality about his win in the Northam Stakes just under two weeks ago, coming with a well timed run under Pike, surging hard late for a big win, clocking fast late splits. Has run well at Belmont previously, Pike sticks and is only third up so has good room for improvement. He’ll do me.

2 Comfort Me (Bet Now:  $SP.00) saves his best for Belmont and has the right racing pattern to give himself every chance. He did that in the Northam Stakes and for the most part, was hailed as the winner, but was nabbed late by a brilliant finale from Dom To Shoot. Great track/distance record and if he gets some level of control on speed, he’ll take running down.

4 Resortman (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is four weeks between runs for Michael Lane since contesting The Quokka where he was far from disgraced in defeat I thought behind Overpass after getting back off the speed. Should love the rise to 1400m and if he can settle closer in the run, he’s going well enough to take this out.

I think 8 Rokanori (Bet Now:  $SP.00) can resume a winner for Team Williams. This gelding is first up, having not raced since November 5 at Ascot when set a big task and did make up ground but couldn’t quite get involved behind Big Screen. Good fresh horse that has trialled up really well in readiness for the return and good lead that Pike is booked. He’ll do me.

2 Creator (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes here with fresh legs for Team Gangemi, having not raced since March 25 at Ascot when unlucky not to be right in the finish, getting badly held up at a crucial stage when a close up fifth to Playing Marika. Not the best of records at Belmont but has a bit of quality about him when right and maps to get an economical run in transit.

3 Mood Swings (Bet Now:  $SP.00) gets back up in trip and has a fab record at Belmont so he has a bit in his corner to run a much improved race. Led two weeks back at Ascot over 1000m but copped a bit too much heat on speed and felt the pinch late when down the track behind It’sarayday. Much better suited at 1200m and his best is clearly good enough to be around the mark.

NEXT BEST: Race Seven Number 4 Catalpa

LONG SHOT: Race Two Number 6 Yoyo’s
