Night racing returns to Moonee Valley this Friday where eight races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (17:30) Legends Open Now (bm64) 1200m
Tricky race to kick the meeting off. On top is 1 Ilovethegame (Bet Now: $4.80) for Greg Eurell with Olly to steer. Had a two run prep in the Winter to start his career, bolting up on debut at Echuca before being far from disgraced at Flemington behind Sense Of Honou. Thought his recent Cranbourne jumpout was quite good and hope Olly finds the front and controls.
5 Nicolini Vito (Bet Now: $3.10) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained three year old that was somewhat unwanted in betting when he resumed at Kyneton and for the first bit of the race, the market looked to get it right as he was caught wide no cover, but he was bolting and took the front on the turn, careering away late. Tricky gate, but he showed first up he can sit wide and still be effective.
10 Free Flying Star (Bet Now: $16.00) can be an improver here at a price. Resumed at Echuca where the market really liked her, backing with real confidence, but I thought she had her chance and was a touch disappointing behind Boom Boom Becker. She’s better than that and does get the Winkers first time to sharpen her up.
Race 2. (18:00) Junction Club Open Now (bm70) 1000m
Heart in your mouth stuff the last 100m or so, but hopefully 9 Chrome Angel (Bet Now: $4.80) can cling on. That’s what she tried to do last time out at this track/distance but was bloused in the final few strides by Hint Of Mint. Gets Jamie Kah aboard and from gate one, she’ll hold up comfortably and take some running down. Just needs to hold on late.
10 Twist Of Fury (Bet Now: $3.50) has the early speed to take care of the wide gate. Sustained speed helped her bolt up last start at Traralgon, charging clear late to win by over four lengths with plenty in hand to the eye. Gets the claim for Lachie Neindorf and he’s starting to find form now after a lean run in recent times.
7 Salty Kisses (Bet Now: $26.00) maps to get the perfect run behind the speed and she can add some value to multiples. Ran in the Hint Of Mint race mentioned above where she was just off the speed throughout and battled away okay without threatening. Senior jock on, can see her holding leaders back and proving a first four contender.
Race 3. (18:30) The Road To Jericho (bm78) 3850m
1 Alienated (Bet Now: $5.50) looks one of the better each way gambles on the card. Cliff Murray trained seven year old that saves his best for 3000m+ races, and he loves the Valley. He’s raced three times at 3000m+ at the Valley for two wins and a fourth to Ablaze, who would be odds on here, so the form reads well, he was good at Ararat on Sunday and will just keep grinding away from near the speed.
Bit surprised that 4 Matas (Bet Now: $2.25) isn’t favourite. Michael Hickmott has this mare ticking along beautifully towards the Jericho. Earned her way to the race via a romp at Gawler where she donkeys, but beat them by nearly ten lengths in a very dominant display. Gets a lovely run from the gate and stable finds Michael Rodd to steer.
8 Mustang Harry (Bet Now: $27.00) lacks the class of some of these, but the way he races, I don’t think the 3850m will be too much of a concern. Last couple have come over the 2350m at Warrnambool, winning his maiden two back before grinding away next time out behind Allaboutattitude. Not sure he wins, but can chuck him in exotics.
Race 4. (19:00) The Leighoak Open Now Hcp (c1) 1600m
I have this as a race in two. Leaning towards 2 Chief Altony (Bet Now: $3.90). If you were on him at Cranbourne, can understand you couldn’t back him given he was beaten there as a $1.70 pop, but there were excuses. It was a stop/start and when those in front sprinted, he was behind camels and had to make a long run. Loomed but the last 100m, he tired. Gets a more economical run this time around and Rodd sticks.
Don’t think 1 Stuchbree Stamp (Bet Now: $4.00) beat a whole lot on debut on Sale Cup Day, but it was the dominance of the win that had to make you take notice. He made an absolute mess of them, winning by over four lengths. Tricky draw to overcome, but has the Moody/Nolen combo and should roll forward.
8 High Delta (Bet Now: $10.00) is a little query at a strong mile but does get the 3kg claim for Will Price and has more upside than most. Was a few weeks between runs and remained at 1400m from the resumption when racing at Echuca where he was on speed and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off, eventually settling for third. Lands near the front here and will try hard.
Race 5. (19:30) Ladbrokes 55 Second Chall-bm70 955m
8 Heka Express (Bet Now: $4.50) is a talented mare for the Corstens camp that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since June 13 when down the track over 1200m behind a handy mare in Kalkarni Royale. She has a good fresh record and liked the way she has jumped out leading in. Hopefully can hold up from the inside gate.
A couple of key scratchings have really helped the cause of 1 Our Gladiator (Bet Now: $4.50), who is an absolute speed demon and is a three time winner at this track/distance. Led and gave a good sight last time out but couldn’t quite finish it off when second to Gorokan Express. Think he can find the front and prove hard to beat.
9 McGarrett (Bet Now: $19.00) is a huge watch here. He’s a handy sprinter when right but has clearly had issues given how lightly raced he is, but the big tick for him going into this is that the Bar Plates come off, so reading between the lines, his feet are in better health now and we know his best is good enough to beat these.
Race 6. (20:00) 4 Pines Refreshing Ale (bm70) 2040m
In the corner of 3 Humble Pie (Bet Now: $2.30). Symon Wilde trained former Kiwi that has had a couple of runs in Australia, the latest over this track/distance. Had to make a long sustained run to get to the leader on the turn and he loomed to win, but that long run just told late and Diplomac Jack kicked on too well. Hopefully won’t need to do that sort of run this time around and with upside, he’s the one to beat.
7 Deserved (Bet Now: $3.40) is flying for Matt Cumani and should be given serious respect here. She ran on Benalla Cup Day over 2000m where she was last in the run in what was a slowly run race, but the one thing she does have is a turn of foot and she produced it in spades to overhaul them. Deserves another crack in town and the claim helps.
8 Enrico Palazzo (Bet Now: $15.00) can bounce back here. He was awful last time out at Morphettville and I was really keen on his chances off the back of an impressive win at Tatura, but he did nothing, with Jess Eaton telling Stewards post race the tempo was too slow. Think 2500m+ is his go, so for his chances, he’d want a genuine speed.
Race 7. (20:30) Seppelt Wines (bm70) 1600m
Biggest query of the meeting is 15 Coolth (Bet Now: $2.80) because if he’s anywhere near right, I think he wins, but first up at the Valley for a horse likely wanting 2000m+…I’d just prefer to watch him at the current price, but he has got the ability and the form given his last run saw him run third to Persan and Right You Are, which is A1 for this kind of race. $3/thereabouts is too short. $4+ and I could bet up.
9 Bacchus (Bet Now: $4.00) has a real liking for this track. 2/2 at it, and last start saw him win at this track/distance under a 12/10 steer from Walker, who lobbed him into a perfect spot just off the speed before angling into clear air and on the home turn, it was race over. He’s got another soft gate to use and Walker sticks.
16 Okotoks (Bet Now: $9.50) is going super at the moment. He ran in the race won by Bacchus at this track/distance a couple of weeks ago. Thought Maddy Lloyd rode a peach race on this guy but was just no match for Bacchus. Liam Riordan gets on well with the Hobson runners and I think he’s value in this race.
Race 8. (21:00) Ladbrokes Easy Form (bm64) 1200m
9 Helavabel (Bet Now: $3.10) is a huge watch here. Greg Eurell trained gelding that resumes, having not raced since April 13 at Sandown when down the track behind the then promising Final Man, a race which included some handy types including the Stakes performed Alburq. Olly booked, drawn well…just want a market push.
7 Cataracta (Bet Now: $3.80) is a key threat for me. Handy mare for the Maher/Eustace stable that resumed at Warrnambool where she was met with really good support and she tried hard, working home nicely late when third to Nick’em. Can sit much closer in the run from the better draw and the claim for Neindorf certainly helps.
6 Aerovictory (Bet Now: $13.00) draws wide but has good early toe and I think can use that to overcome the barrier. Showed good zip last time out at Kilmore and looked the winner, but was nabbed late by an in form Snows Bro. That form isn’t strong for this kind of race, but if this track is playing to those on speed, he comes right into play.
