WA metro racing this Saturday makes a rare trip to Bunbury for Tabtouch Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (16:19) Furphy Maiden 1200m
Interesting maiden to start the day. I’ll lean the way of 9 Encendio (Bet Now: $3.50) with the Durrant/Pike factor. Proart gelding having his first start with just the one trial under the belt, which came in late August at Lark Hill when running an eye catching third. Tricky draw to overcome but with Pike steering, I’ll lean his way.
14 Bel My Pago (Bet Now: $2.15) is a daughter of Bel Esprit having her first start for LIndsey Smith. This girl has had two trials in readiness for her first start, the latest coming at Belmont on Monday when winning in good time. Another one with a tricky gate but if she can get cover or get over on speed, she’ll take some beating.
11 Blackwood Flyer (Bet Now: $31.00) could be a sleeper at odds. Trevor Roche trains this mare, who resumed over 1000m at Northam a couple of weeks back and was unlucky not to finish closer. She got held up in the straight when looking to build the revs and should have finished much closer for mine behind Ship Creek. Has gate one so hopefully she won’t be far away.
Race 2. (16:58) Rob Bynder 10 Year Memorial Handicap (1MW) 1675m
7 Bollinger Boy (Bet Now: $5.50) for me. Adam Durrant trains this gelding, who ran over the 1650m at Belmont last time where he just got too far back in the run but unleashed a brilliant finale to run an eye catching fourth to Honorfic. He can be a bit costly to follow, but with luck in running and if he doesn’t give away a start, he’ll go close.
1 Salon du Cheval (Bet Now: $4.00) is a handy staying gelding for Lindsey Smith that resumes with an eye towards the Perth Cup, but does need to progress through the grades. Hasn’t raced for over a couple of months since winning over 2200m at Northam, showing a nice turn of foot from off the pace. Residual fitness on his side and has a touch of quality.
8 Rebellionaire (Bet Now: $12.00) is a son of Stratum who is on the seven day back up after racing over 1300m last Saturday at Belmont where he was on speed throughout and looked to travel well but just died on the run behind Bold Success. Up to the 1675m should suit him and he does have upside left.
Race 3. (17:38) Prince Of Wales Hotel Handicap (72+) 2000m
I like 7 Queen Bey (Bet Now: $3.20). Team Williams trains this mare, who is two weeks between runs since racing over 2100m at Belmont where she was ridden very cold and just gave away too much head start when second to Kirov Boy, but her finale was excellent. Would prefer her at 2200m, but a genuine tempo at this trip should help her cause.
5 Noir de Rue (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Justin Warwick trained gelding who is racing in great form since being transferred from Peter Fernie. Ran over the mile at Belmont two weeks back where he settled back off the pace but showed a decent turn of foot when let down by Lucy to get the win. Up to 2000m is the query, but hard to knock the way he’s going.
8 Toppa Dawozza (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Gary Crispin trained veteran who doesn’t like winning but perhaps for exotics, he can be included. He comes through the Boulder Cup at Kalgoorlie where he didn’t get much room in the straight when having something to offer behind First Affair. Doubt he can win, but can add value to multiples.
Race 4. (18:14) Amelia Park Handicap (1MW) 1200m
Looks to be real intent with 8 Special Reward (Bet Now: $2.10). He’s always had a bit of a wrap on him since day one and he produced it on race day, winning two of three runs to start the career, with start three being the defeat where the bob of the head didn’t go his way. Blinkers are back on and he trialled brilliantly a couple of weeks back at Lark Hill.
I’m wary of 2 Royal Command (Bet Now: $3.10) an Adam Durrant trained gelding who resumes. He hasn’t raced since early January when closing off strongly at Ascot to run second to Veuve De Vega. Comes here with no trials under the belt, but does have a strong fresh record, so I’d watch the yard/market.
5 Kimbo’s Girl (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Patronize mare resuming for Simon Miller. This girl hasn’t raced since March when not getting much luck in the straight behind Bushfire Blonde. She’s a very good fresh horse, likes racing at Bunbury and her recent trial win at Belmont was more than encouraging to the eye.
Race 5. (18:50) Tabtouch 3YO Classic 1000m
Ripping race. I’ll trust the speed map and go with 6 Lady Cosmology (Bet Now: $2.50). Simon Miller trains this high class filly, who had a fab opening prep, highlighted by a second in the Karrakatta Plate. Trialled really well at Lark Hill and should get the lovely drag up in the box seat via Agent Pippa. Looks the one.
1 Valour Road (Bet Now: $5.00) is a classy son of Frost Giant who resumes for the Simon Miller team. This bloke was first up when winning the Karrakatta Plate before running a close up fourth in the Sires. The trial behind Galaxy Star was very good and likely gets a reasonable trip outside the speedy Agent Pippa.
4 Agent Pippa (Bet Now: $11.00) is the race fit animal who will be in it for a long way. Ran over 1000m at Belmont a fortnight back against the older horses and tried hard but was bloused late by How To Fly. Back to her own age and should lead these for fun. She’ll give a sight but the last 50m will be her test.
Race 6. (19:25) JCW Electrical Handicap (72+) 1100m
10 Stageman (Bet Now: $2.15) clearly on top for me. Son of Written Tycoon resuming for Team Williams after such a promising Autumn/Winter prep where he won second up with placings either side. Trialled up enormous behind Great Shot and that trial form was franked last Saturday. If he can get three wide cover and clear air, he’ll take beating.
4 How To Fly (Bet Now: $4.60) is an Adam Durrant trained mare who had been bursting to win a race for some time and it finally came around two weeks back when given a sweet steer by Pike and wearing down Agent Pippa, landing some big bets. Bit harder here, and a tricky draw, but is in a winning frame of mind.
I like 3 Pretentious Chant (Bet Now: $26.00) back to 1100m. He ran over 1400m a fortnight ago and to the eye he was disappointing behind Count Tomoz Off but he pulled a bit too hard in the run and for mine that sealed his fate. More genuine tempo this time around and with better manners, he can threaten.
Race 7. (20:00) In Memory Of Brendan Ballantyne Handicap (78+) 1400m
I think 8 Great Again (Bet Now: $4.00) is a near good thing. Lindsey Smith has this gelding flying and the key to him seems to be 1400m on the fresh side. Four weeks between runs since winning over this trip at Belmont and that start he was ridden a treat by Pateman. Should get a soft lead here and prove hard to run down.
6 Action (Bet Now: $5.00) is a quality son of Pierro resuming for the Williams camp. He had a very solid Autumn campaign, finishing up in the WA Derby when a dominant winner. He looks a rising star and trialled well behind Galaxy Star. Just think 1400m is a touch short but he’ll be strong late no doubt and can clearly win if they overdo it.
10 Missile Launch (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Vaughn Sigley trained gelding resuming. He really came of age last time in, winning a host of races before racing over 2000m at Belmont on a soft track and he seemed a tired horse. Been given a break and trialled well enough to my eye at Lark Hill. Good fresh record also.
Race 8. (20:35) Civilcon Constructions Handicap (1MW) 1400m
I’ll be cheering for 8 Recharger (Bet Now: $9.50) to lead all the way. He did that just under a month back over 1400m at Belmont when ridden aggressively to lead under Emma Stent and he seemed to react to that, holding a safe margin and winning impressively. Wide gate, but should lead I think and prove hard to run down.
10 Sigil (Bet Now: $11.00) could well be a relation to Tom Melbourne given he’s only two races from 34 outings. Despite not winning, he is racing well. He ran last Saturday at Belmont and worked home quite strongly I thought behind another enigma in Bold Success. Horror draw to overcome, but if they go silly, he’ll be strong late.
1 Miracle Man (Bet Now: $9.50) is the best horse in the race but I am not sure what to make of the resumption. He was just to bad to be true a fortnight back at Belmont behind Count Tomoz Off, finishing a bad last and not coming into the race at all. At his best, he’s the best horse in the race. Just wait and see what the market does.
