Nine races will be run and won at Randwick on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:55) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1600m
One of the worst Highways in recent memory. In saying that, I think there is a near good thing here in the shape of 3 General Harmony (Bet Now: $4.60) for the Tim McIntosh team. This horse had been racing well at the provincials at Newcastle but a lovely drop in grade when going to Scone got his confidence back up with a dominant win over the mile. That was his first run at the trip and he passed with flying colours. He can repeat the dose.
5 Bray (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Brett Cavanough trained gelding who is two for two this time in, both coming on his home track at Scone. Resumed with a win over 1100m before stepping up to 1300m and despite the margin being narrow, he was impressive. Bit of an unknown at the mile, but he has the speed in the legs and upside.
7 Fui San (Bet Now: $13.00) is the interesting runner. Terry Robinson trains this bloke. Resumed with an eye catching fourth in a Rosehill Highway behind Volpe before going to Moruya where he was awful behind Goldmine, but the positive is that Goldmine has won again. Second up syndrome perhaps? Not sure, but third up at the mile looks ideal.
Race 2. (13:30) ATC Membership Sprint (71) 1000m
2 Puppet Master (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Gary Portelli trained colt who is low flying at the moment. This son of Foxwedge has bolted up at his past two, albeit over the 900m at Newcastle, which can be a bit hard to follow, especially when rising to Saturday grade, but he’s smashed the clock both times with sustained speed. Think if he adopts similar tactics here, he’ll take some beating.
1 Kennedy (Bet Now: $4.50) was four weeks between runs when racing over the 1100m here a fortnight back and if you were on, your money was pretty much done 200m after the start given the horse was wide no cover for the trip. Actually did a pretty good job to stick on when third to Pendeloque. That hard run under the belt, back to 1000m, looks ideal.
9 Another Sin (Bet Now: $8.00) is a boom youngster first up for Brett Cavanough. This gelding had the boom on him prior to debuting in a Highway and the big bets were landed with an all the way win before being thrown in the deep end in the San Domenico when down the track behind Pariah. No trials, but he is a big watch.
Race 3. (14:05) TAB Handicap (82) 2400m
See no reason to jump off 3 Cordero (Bet Now: $4.00). He was confidently backed when racing at this track/distance on Boxing Day and aided by a peach from Avdulla, the Team Hawkes trained stayer proved far too good and won with a bit of authority in the end. Now he has had the hard 2400m run under the belt, he should be better off.
7 Blanco Cara (Bet Now: $8.00) probably lacks the turn of foot of some of these, but one thing we do know is that she will stay all day. That was the case last time out over 1900m at Gosford. She looked gone on the turn but once she balanced up, she surged and attacked the line to nab San Pablo right on the peg. Has upside and no trouble with the trip.
8 Rock On Ivy (Bet Now: $11.00) is a former Queensland mare making her debut for the Tim Martin camp so I find her a very fascinating runner. She ran three weeks back over 2200m at the Gold Coast and I loved the way she closed off late behind Kirini, who was a provincial class mare when racing in NSW if that is a guide. Still, I think she is a big watch.
Race 4. (14:40) Book Summer Hospitality Today Handicap (79) 1200m
8 Tip Top (Bet Now: $5.00) for me. Les Bridge trains this five year old, who was specked at odds when resuming over 1000m here on New Years Day and he probably should have won had he not got so far back when second to Rose of Man. Won his lone previous second up attempt and up to 1200m looks ideal. Keen to bet each way.
2 Bratislava (Bet Now: $3.20) is a talented gelding for the Godolphin team and James Cummings who resumed with a strong win at Canterbury before going to Warwick Farm where he tried very hard from just off the pace but had to settle for second to the enigmatic Wild ‘N’ Famous. Third up now, he should be ready fitness wise.
7 Argent D’Or (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Sebring gelding for Joe Pride who is first up. He is a proven city performer who looks ready to sprint well fresh off the back of a couple of sharp trials, the latest coming last week at Warwick Farm behind stablemate Brook Magic. Is a first up winner and he likes racing at Randwick. Knockout chance.
Race 5. (15:15) TAB Rewards Handicap (81) 1200m
Giving 6 Nonpariel (Bet Now: $6.50) another chance but this will just about be her last chance if she doesn’t perform here. Was quite keen on her when she resumed over 1000m here on Boxing Day but she didn’t really set the world on fire in what was a really plain performance behind Princefamous. Up to 1200m and back to her own sex should see her take beating.
8 Kawaikini (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Jason Coyle mare who is in really good form at the moment. Her last two runs have come at this track/distance, the latest coming a fortnight back behind the low flying Sugar Bella. A strong 1200m probably sees her out, but she has the right form on the board and is hard fit, so she rates highly.
There is a bit of market support to suggest that 7 Tears In Heaven (Bet Now: $6.00) will run well. Tracey Bartley trains this mare at Wyong and to my eye she looks forward enough to run well fresh. She is a two time first up winner and has been brought to fitness with a couple of sharp trial wins, both in reasonable time. Goes well at Randwick and is a two time first up winner.
Race 6. (15:55) Maroubra Mile 1600m
1 Supply And Demand (Bet Now: $4.20) on top for me. Quality galloper for the Waterhouse/Bott who was freshened up after a gutbuster in the Railway. Ran over 1400m at Warwick Farm three weeks back and stuck to the task really gamely with the big weight when a close up third to the talented mare Nancy. Randwick mile looks ideal and is the class runner by a fair way.
6 Dreamforce (Bet Now: $2.25) is a horse in really good form at the moment for the John Thompson yard. Ran at this track/distance last time out where the map said he’d get a soft lead and dash. That’s how it exactly panned out as he bolted up and ran really good time. Looks the leader again…just think he won’t get it as easy this time.
5 Liapari (Bet Now: $7.50) comes through the Dreamforce race here a fortnight back and considering he was second up and out the back, I thought his effort to run third was very good. He is the horse with the most upside heading into this race, he loves the Randwick mile, should be near peak fitness and a win certainly couldn’t surprise.
Race 7. (16:35) #theraces Handicap (86) 1400m
8 Samadoubt (Bet Now: $2.90) for me in a tricky race. This gelding gave them a spanking two back at Canterbury before racing here last Saturday where he attempted to lead all the way but just got caught the final strides by Malaise. Now he’s had the tough 1400m run under the belt, he’ll be better off and the claim for King is a big tick.
5 Eusebio (Bet Now: $3.70) is a quality Godolphin gelding for James Cummings who resumed in a pretty strong 85 at Warwick Farm three weeks back where he just looked in need of the run but wasn’t beaten far at all when sixth to Wild ‘N’ Famous, beaten 1.4L. Has a really good second up record and up to 1400m on the big track looks ideal.
7 The Bandit (Bet Now: $21.00) is a former John Sadler trained stayer that is now with John Thompson. Go back to the Spring of 2016 and this horse was being trained at getting a start in the Melbourne Cup. Couldn’t quite reach that level and is now in Sydney under Thompson, and we know he has a very good record with these Waratah Thoroughbred gallopers. Two trials leading in have been alright so for mine he is a definite yard/market watch.
Race 8. (17:20) ATC Owners Benefit Card Handicap (78) 1400m
5 Sugar Bella (Bet Now: $1.65) is a quality mare for the Kris Lees stable who is very promising and I’m keen she can put this field away. Loved her win last time out at Randwick. Not sure she beat much, but she rounded them up with a touch of arrogance and smashed the clock. Was a chance of running in the Mares race on Magic Millions Day, so on that basis, should just about win here.
6 Gitan (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Jean Dubois trained gelding who is racing really well at the moment. Just can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran over this track/distance on Boxing Day where he sat up near a hot speed. Took the lead early in the straight and fought hard under Kathy but Bye See had the softer run and finished best. He’ll give a bold sight for sure. Just needs a more economical run in transit.
11 Aquatic (Bet Now: $10.00) is a bludger but outside Sugar Bella, most of these are. He ran at this track/distance on Boxing Day in the race mentioned above and worked home well late out wide behind Bye See. Draws to sit closer in the run and he does tend to save his best for Randwick. Has to go in multiples.
Race 9. (17:55) Tab.com.au Handicap (82) 1800m
9 Emperor’s Way (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Team Snowden trained stayer on the rise and is showing good promise. Thought he looked home a couple of Wednesdays back over 1900m at Canterbury but was nabbed near the peg by Allcash. 1800m at Randwick looks an ideal scenario and I like these Snowden runners who step up in grade.
6 Vaucluse Bay (Bet Now: $4.20) is definitely nearing a win. This Chris Waller trained galloper ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where he sat up outside stablemate Hogmanay, and really gifted the race to that horse, with some very cheap sectionals mid race. Should be hard fit now and hopefully a more genuine speed.
7 Coys (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Marc Conners trained gelding who is in career best form at the moment. Gutsy second to Smooth Whiskey two back over 2100m at Gosford before racing over the 1900m at Canterbury where he did a power of work on speed and just missed out on the win when a narrow third to Allcash. Has won at Randwick before and maps super.
