Nine races will be run and won at Morphettville on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out ten metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out seven metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:41) Magic Millions 2yo Sale (64) 1100m
I’m really keen here on 6 Smokin’ Val (Bet Now: $2.35) for the Jon O’Connor team. She debuted at Murray Bridge over 1000m and did she beat much? I’d say no, but the manner in which she exploded and put them away was just so impressive, and I think the fact they had her accepted for a race at Flemington tells me they have a good opinion of her. Think she wins.
4 The Multiplier (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Will Clarken trained three year old who looks a handy type and a win isn’t far off. Trialled very well leading into his debut a few weeks ago on the course proper here when leading and he gave a mini kick, but condition just ran out late when third to Celestine. So You Can franked that form next start, so that reads well and he’ll come on from that.
2 Chosen Blonde (Bet Now: $4.20) is racing really well this time in for the Chris Bieg team. Impressive winner on the Parks track two back before going to the Valley on a bottomless track and she was brave in defeat when third to Dirty Thoughts, who was good in the Atlantic Jewel last Saturday, so the form reads well. Just a matter of whether or not last start busted her.
Race 2. (13:16) Plympton Crash Repairs Mdn 1200m
Think it’s a race in two. Just leaning the way of 2 Frankie Pinot (Bet Now: $2.15) for the McEvoy camp. Hadn’t raced since January 2019 when resuming a couple of weeks ago at Sale and I loved the way he finished his race off in a pleasing return, finishing a close up second. Provided there is no second up syndrome, with the form around him, he’s the one to beat.
7 Jonquest (Bet Now: $3.30) looks the only other winning hope. Very encouraging debut at this track/distance three weeks ago, sitting off the speed before Stubby found clear air and the son of Rebel Raider launched late to work home strongly for second. Staying at 1200m is the query with him because I think he wants further, but he’s a nice horse.
I’ve seen worse $51 shots than 5 Arctic Flora (Bet Now: $35.00). Ran over 1200m last Wednesday at Gawler when eased back from the wide gate and finding the line well to run fourth behind a handy one, Lady Dunmore. Can sit much closer in the run from the draw and with the claim for Sophie Logan, a knockout chance at bolters odds.
Race 3. (13:51) Tab Supports Jockey Trust (76) 2500m
If he can relax in the run and not go stupid in pulling, I’m really keen on 3 Hasta La Fiorente (Bet Now: $3.20). Been keen on him his past couple but he just doesn’t help himself at all the way he pulls in the run, leaving himself with no energy for when it matters. Like the Cross-over Nose Band going on, and hopefully that will relax him.
1 Bertwhistle (Bet Now: $3.00) is a beauty for Darryl Dodson but I will say she has been up a fair while and you have to question if there’s upside left. The rise to 2500m will suit after racing over 2250m on the Parks track two weeks ago, grinding home okay from off the slow speed. Has the claim, which helps, and strikes a winnable race.
If there is one at odds that could surprise, think it could be 2 Franked (Bet Now: $8.00). He is getting to a more ideal trip for the first time this campaign and his two runs this prep haven’t been too bad at all over unsuitable distances. A win wouldn’t shock at all given how well the stable has started the new season, so watch the market.
Race 4. (14:30) Storm Water Solutions (58) 1050m
10 Unbounded (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Phillip Stokes trained mare who should be suited up to 1250m. Ran over 1050m on the course proper three weeks ago where she sliced her way through the field nearer the inside and finished off quite strongly when third to Aedelad. That was her first run in over a month so fitter and up in trip, she’s likeable.
Despite winning over 1100m on the course proper here a few weeks ago, I feel 2 Dawn Salute (Bet Now: $3.50) is much better suited at five furlongs and when he has a bunny to chase. Smart ride from Pannell saw him win the race, controlling things from the front and kicking strongly when required. Like him back to 1050m, sits off a fast speed and is strong late.
5 Lancaster Sound (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Sue Murphy trained five year old that is certainly capable at this level. Ran over 1000m at Murray Bridge five weeks ago when eased back from the wide gate to find cover under Vorster and worked home okay without really threatening behind Ready Sunshine. His best is good enough. Happy to give him a chance here.
Race 5. (15:06) Stockmol Molasses (58) 1800m
3 Melody Man (Bet Now: $2.70) is really well suited up in trip and he looks really progressive and I don’t think that’s too much of an issue. He broke the maiden tag a couple of Wednesdays back at Murray Bridge when leading throughout and what I liked is the longer the race went, he got better, so extra 100m is a big tick and he’s got the most upside.
11 Back Pocket (Bet Now: $5.50) is an interesting runner. Sue Nolan trained gelding that was backed with confidence when racing at Gawler last Wednesday and looked to be the winner on the turn, but he couldn’t quite get there and had to settle for a second to Frankel Star. Vorster on a decent lead and overall, the depth here is thin.
Think 9 Aliris (Bet Now: $27.00) is going well and can go close here at a price. Not sure the give in the track was to his liking when racing on the course proper here three weeks ago, plus the tempo was a tad too strong I felt when down the track behind Cannot Be Serios. Think he’s going well and this looks a very winnable race.
Race 6. (15:46) Pdf Food Services (58) 1200m
I think this is really good placement by the Maher/Eustace camp with 11 Incas (Bet Now: $4.20). All three career outings have come on the Ballarat Synthetic, winning the maiden two back before contesting a 58 and should have won, but didn’t get clear air, and for a horse with 62kg on the back, sit/sprint isn’t ideal. Think this is a lovely race for a progressive animal.
10 Boomer Beach (Bet Now: $8.50) has had a few chances to win some races, but despite the poor winning strike rate, Jake Stephens has him going well. Ran last Wednesday at Gawler where he got a pair or two further back than anticipated and that left him with a bit too much to do, but closed off strongly. Senior jock on so a definite threat.
A key chance here is 12 Pivotal Force (Bet Now: $15.00). He ran over 1200m on the course proper here a few weeks ago and finished his race off quite strongly when beaten a length by Silverhawk, finishing second. Has really started to put it together this time in and sitting off a fast speed I do like for him and is hard to beat in a winnable race.
Race 7. (16:26) Sublime Coffee On Bray St (68) 1600m
The seven day back up is interesting with 3 Scorpius (Bet Now: $3.70) but I think he finds a winnable race here. Ran on the Parks track last Saturday and ran well, but was beaten by a horse who I think could be blacktype quality in Aqueduct, so think that form reads well for this and from the gate with the claim, he’s likeable for sure.
I think this run will give us a guide as to whether or not 2 Lord Vladivostok (Bet Now: $3.50) can be a Saturday class horse in Australia. Was on him when he resumed two weeks ago on the Parks track and I thought he had his chance on speed when tiring late to run fourth to Allusion. Winkers on to sharpen him up and senior jock goes on. Hard to beat.
A third up bounce back is on the cards with 12 Galahad Guru (Bet Now: $12.00). He was backed with confidence when resuming off a long break, but condition gave out fresh. Then raced second up and I thought was a bit flat, so third up now off the long spell, should just about be at peak fitness and represents good value.
Race 8. (17:05) Seymour Bloodstock (rs2ly) 1200m
12 Alsvior (Bet Now: $5.00) on top in a tricky race. The Jaensch team have this guy going super at the moment. Was nine weeks between runs when racing on the Parks track a fortnight back where he did a power of work to get on speed and was entitled to drop away, but kept finding and only went down narrowly to Kayseri. Upside to come, does no work from the gate, hard to beat.
1 Dexelation (Bet Now: $3.90) will welcome the drop in depth/grade/distance after contesting the Leon Macdonald two weeks ago on the Parks track. He was there near the speed and tried hard, but 1400m at that level just found him out, but far from disgraced in running fourth, being outbobbed for third by Dalasan, which reads very well for this.
8 Extreme Thrill (Bet Now: $27.00) is one at odds I could include in multiples. Francis/Kent trained gelding that is three weeks between runs since racing on the course proper here when back and closing off okay late behind Jacobite Prince. Think this level of race might be a bit much for him, but is down in the weights and could add value to exotics.
Race 9. (17:40) Saja Supporting Njt (bm72) 1100m
Looks a race in two, but the better value is there for 4 Dimaggio (Bet Now: $4.20) IMO. Progressive son of Deep Field for the McEvoy camp that hasn’t raced since June 13 when producing good ticker to get the job done at Murray Bridge after doing plenty of work in the run. He maps to sit just off the speed and he will be strong late.
If you knew 14 Instant Celebrity (Bet Now: $2.15) would show gate speed and sit handy, she’d be $1.50 against this lot. Ability wise, she’s the best horse in the race by some distance, but the gate is a real worry, and the fact she’s showed no early speed in her two career outings to date, so $2.40 is short enough. Quality filly, but she’ll need to be to win.
8 Ecumenical (Bet Now: $7.00) is another quality galloper that lines up. Mick Huxtable trained filly that is a multiple Stakes winner, so she’s got the runs on the board. She resumes with potentially an eye towards targeting blacktype in Melbourne. Couple of trials she has had have been solid enough, so watch the market with her.
