12/9/2020 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Flemington, Makybe Diva Stakes day

Flemington will play host to a nine race card on Saturday where it is Makybe Diva Stakes Day. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Second up syndrome is the only thing stopping me from launching into 4 Schabau (Bet Now: $2.20 TOP ODDS). I thought he was fabulous in defeat first up at Caulfield. The time they ran was good for the day and keep in mind he was first up off a tendon, led and was on the rail, which wasn’t the spot to be, so there were plenty of ticks for him there. If he bounces off that run and not go flat, he wins.

2 Lord Belvedere (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) has been freshened up with an eye towards the Bart Cummings to get into the Melbourne Cup. Found some really good form during the Winter, but in the fair dinkum stakes, he beat nothing compared to what he needs to be both here and in the Bart Cummings. But he has the Maher/Eustace polish.

There is rain forecast for Saturday, which will be music to the ears of 1 Young Rascal (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS). He resumed in the Caulfield race that Schabau contested above, won by Al Galayel. I don’t think the firm track was to his liking, so want to be forgiving there, and if the rain does hit the track, I think he can run a much improved race.

As a whole, I think the Melbourne 3YO Boys are below par, so I’m looking outside the square and have landed with a promising animal, 10 So You Can (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS), from SA. He has the Macdonald/Gluyas polish and no, he’s not at the level of ability that Dalasan has, but he’s got talent for sure and should eat up the 1400m after a dominant win over 1250m back home last start. Olly booked a good lead.

9 Crown Mint (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) ran second in that race mentioned above that So You Can won and he was very brave in defeat after sitting wide no cover for the first half of the race. Only got the staggers late, so the run was full of merit. Draws much better this time around, don’t see 1400m being an issue and Willow steers.

12 Ironedge (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) could be a sleeper at odds. He’s still a maiden, but the form around him does read quite well. Narrow third to Flying Award in the Anzac Day Stakes two back before being spelled. Resumed at Sale where he had to make a sustained run but just missed out on the win. He’s a nice horse this. Not sure he wins, but in saying that, wouldn’t be shocked if he won at a price.

1 Arcadia Queen (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) on top, but not a great deal of confidence. Resumed in the PB Lawrence and was just fair but solid enough behind Savatiano. Then was going to go in the Memsie but was scratched. Had a jumpout to get ready and looked to stretch out nicely there, so banking on her class getting her home.

If this is a soft 1400m, like it was a few weeks ago in the PB Lawrence, then 2 Savatiano (Bet Now: $2.50 TOP ODDS) has to be hard to beat again. By the time the race came around, the track seemed to dry up a bit, which suited her, and once she got on speed and they dropped anchor, her turn of foot was always going to get her home and she won. Just doesn’t want the rain to hit too hard.

12 Lady Loft (Bet Now: $126.00 TOP ODDS) is a Julius Sandhu trained mare that can run well again. Ran at the Valley a few weeks ago on a very heavy track and albeit was beaten six lengths by Tailleur, she ran second and was brave in fighting on like she did. Form around her prior was just fair, but I have plenty of time for Tailleur, so think that form is good. Good enough for here? Not sure.

Hasn’t got the class of a couple above him in the field, but 7 Bold Star (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) has a fab record down the straight and with that mind, he is on top. Resumed over 1100m at Caulfield and was one of the runs of the day in defeat from back near last in the run when a close up fourth. Draws the right part of the track and will charge late.

Class will carry 1 Tofane (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) a long way. She got better and better as the prep went deeper during the Autumn, culminating in a Group l win when taking out the All Aged at Randwick. Could I back her to win first up? Given she has bigger fish to fry and is topweight, no, but definitely including in an Early Quaddie just in case.

Nothing wrong with the resumption of 5 Dollar For Dollar (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) at Caulfield. He resumed in the same race as Bold Star and I thought he was very good in defeat, and a little unlucky too given he didn’t have much room to work with late. Yet to race down the straight, but it looks like he’s being trained as a sprinter and it looks to be working.

3 Aktau (Bet Now: $4.20) is being set for the Cups and I think he can kick off the prep with a win. Just how good he is, I do not know, but this isn’t a strong handicap and he doesn’t need to be fully wound up to win. Two 1200m jumpouts to get ready have been good to the eye, he draws well and loves racing at Flemington.

Think 16 O’Tauto (Bet Now: $26.00) has come back in good order for Greg Eurell. Not much luck first up at Caulfield behind Showmanship before racing last Saturday at the Valley where again, not much went his way but was good late. Like he’s on the quick back up and as I said above, this isn’t a strong race overall.

15 Irish Flame (Bet Now: $71.00) hasn’t done too much wrong in two Australian runs for Brett Scott. Good late fresh behind Coming Around at Flemington before going to the Valley, and the meeting was called off after this race, so even though it was a Heavy 10, it was more like a Heavy 15. He ran third, but was beaten 13 lengths. Can run top three without surprising.

Could well be a case of times and margins when it comes to 14 Windstorm (Bet Now: $2.10). He has this lot covered all things being equal. Made his Victorian debut over 1100m at Caulfield and I loved the way he worked home after getting a fair way back in the run. Pike is on, draws well and the rise to 1400m looks ideal. Bad luck the only thing beating him.

The rise to 1400m should suit 11 Bumper Blast (Bet Now: $10.00). He resumed with an electric win down the straight here before going to Caulfield where he was a bit flat I thought, so there were excuses for him. Back to Flemington and back up to 1400m, can see him running a much improved race. Improved enough to beat Windstorm though? Time will tell.

3 Iconoclasm (Bet Now: $19.00) is much better suited at this level. Looked a throw at the stumps first up in the Memsie to try and get a Group l next to his name but he was outclassed behind Behemoth. Much better suited here, gets gate one and Olly to steer. Only thing concerning him is if we get raceday rain, because he’s hopeless when getting his feet wet.

What.A.Race. My goodness, the depth here is extraordinary. 1200m straight to 1600m is an ask, but I thought the win of 14 Perfect Jewel (Bet Now: $6.50) was outstanding. Charged clear late to win the Cockram and ran really good time relative to the meeting, doing it with upside to come. If Pike can use the inside gate, she’ll take a power of beating.

4 Fierce Impact (Bet Now: $4.00) is the safe option because he has become pretty much the best 1400m-1600m WFA horse in Australia in the space of a few months. Resumed in the Winx Stakes and was as game as ever when a close up third to Verry Elleegant. Tick over trial was very good, Zahra on, draws soft…plenty to like.

9 Master Of Wine (Bet Now: $12.00) has to be given another chance. He was too bad to be true when resuming in the Winx Stakes and yes, he was wide in the run, but still expected a bit more. He’s here now with an eye towards the Cups and though 1600m is short of his best still, he has the brilliance to beat these and beat these comfortably.

I’m banking on raceday rain so the track has some give in it, because I think that’s the thing that could spark improvement from 4 Doubtland (Bet Now: $6.50). He resumed in the San Domenico and really, he wasn’t the only one that was left behind when Anders did what he did. Like the switch to Melbourne and hopefully this track can get some give in it.

The Blinkers off have turned me off charging into 10 Personal (Bet Now: $8.50). I think she’s the Thousand Guineas pony and am confident she will win that, but it seems like the Hayes/Dabernig team are keeping their ace up the sleeve. I say ace because the Blinkers went on leading into the Blue Diamond and she ran a career best. Class could well get her home.

Beware the unbeaten horse. 9 Tydeus (Bet Now: $9.50) is 2/2 to start the prep, debuting with a strong win at Warrnambool before going to Bendigo last Wednesday and gee he was impressive. Not sure he’s a Group l talent, not sure he’s even at this level, but he’s got the right racing pattern and the hard race fitness.

I was amazed that $20+ was on offer for 8 September Run (Bet Now: $16.00). Was well tried when she resumed in the Silver Shadow but was ridden far too warm I thought and had nothing left for the straight behind Dame Giselle. Think with cover from the good draw, she’ll be more effective and I do think overall, the Sydney 3YO’s are better.

4 Minhaaj (Bet Now: $4.60) is a quality filly for the Hayes/Dabernig team that resumes. This girl had a three run Autumn prep to start her career, winning 2/2, and the ratings boys and girls thought she would be a serious Slipper contender, but unfortunately was four wide for the trip, so a total forgive. Liked the recent jumpout and is proven here.

1 Mildred (Bet Now: $16.00) should always be respected in these kind of races. She’s a pocket rocket that puts herself on speed and gives her all, winning Stakes races and placing in multiple blacktype events, so she’s got a bit of quality. She was a natural 2YO though. Has she improved into her 3YO season? Time will tell.

LONG SHOT: Race Eight Number 4 Doubtland
