12/2/2022 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Randwick, Apollo Stakes day

Ten races have been set down for Randwick on Saturday for Apollo Stakes Day, featuring the return of champion mare Verry Elleegant along with a host of quality gallopers. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.

2 Metallicity (Bet Now: $2.25 TOP ODDS) is smart. Very smart. Team Snowden juvenile that has won three trials. First trial, he was clicked up and showed very good change up speed before a second trial, at Rosehill, where he chased down a tearaway leader and won under minimal pressure. Then the third trial he was behind the speed before getting an inside split and showing really good change up speed to win. He looks above average and I’m keen on him.

7 Sandpaper (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have his share of talent for James Cummings. Would have been a good thing beaten had he not got the split on debut under the lights at Canterbury but he got it, drove hard late and won impressively. Gets a suck run once again and stable just starting to fire with their juveniles.

5 Peace Officer (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) is a Clarry Conners trained colt that is on debut. He’s had a couple of trials to get ready for start one, the latest seeing him finish a close up fourth behind Metallicity where I thought he went about his business nicely. Has gate one and stable should never be underestimated with juveniles.

I think there’s a great each way bet here in the shape of 1 Napoleon Solo (Bet Now: $16.00 TOP ODDS). Natalie Jarvis has him flying I feel. Good two back in the Cowra Cup before going to the Bega Cup at the Sapphire Coast and IMO, Mallyon gave him zero. The inside was red hot for the meeting but he chose to come very wide on the turn and for him to finish off like he did, the run was very good behind Room Number, who bolted up at this track the start prior. 1800m on the big track, hopefully gets a firm deck, and I think he’ll only run well.

3 Lord Desanimaux (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is racing really well at the moment for Highway master Terry Robinson. Just got too far out of his ground at Rosehill last time but was good late, beaten just under two lengths. That was two runs at 1500m under the belt so now the rise to 1800m should be ideal.

The rise to 1800m looks ideal for 4 Racketeering (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS). Lapped up the mud to bolt in fresh at Coffs Harbour before running in the 1500m Highway at Rosehill two weeks ago and I think he would have gone close to winning with clear air. Just had no luck in the straight when seemingly having plenty to offer. Fitter and up in trip, bigger track, he appeals.

6 Casino Kid (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) is having his first look at 2400m but he had his first look at 2000m two weeks ago and passed with flying colours despite getting beaten, so 2400m here should be fine. He tried his heart out at Rosehill but just couldn’t quite wear down Crystal Pegasus. He has the turn of foot to win this if it becomes a sit/sprint.

2 Outlandos (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is bursting to win a race. John Sargent has him flying and that was confirmed in the Magic Millions Subzero when closing off strongly late to finish second to tough nut Navy Cross. He was 1800m straight to 2400m that afternoon so with that run under the belt, back to 78 grade, he looks hard to beat.

The way 3 Flambeur (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) found the line last time, I think 2400m will be ideal. His last run came at 2000m at Rosehill and I thought he closed off pretty well without threatening behind Crystal Pegasus. I think that form has to read well for a similar race, especially with a rise in trip.

2 Capital Reign (Bet Now: $2.40 TOP ODDS) looks to have the right form. Gary Portelli trained three year old that resumed over 1100m here three weeks ago when going along at a decent clip in front and tried his heart out but the end of 1100m, especially fresh, just found him out late when run down by Silent Impact. That looks to read really well for this.

3 Invincible Kiss (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) is an honest mare that is generally around the mark. Ran last Wednesday on the Kenso track here and didn’t quite get the clearest of paths in the straight and should have finished closer behind So Say You. If she gets the rub of the green here, she can win.

5 Esteemed Lady (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) is a genuine mare for Gwenda Markwell that looks suited here. Resumed on Australia Day at Warwick Farm when chasing a genuine speed and I liked the way she kept finding under pressure when a close up second Star Cherie. 1000m looks her sweet spot, and has upside, so she commands respect.

I’m with 2 Yiyi (Bet Now: $2.35). Like most, was keen on him two weeks ago at Rosehill. Can’t blame the ride from J Mac. It was an absolute peach. Just was outgunned late by Wairere Falls, and I’m putting it down to Yiyi being three weeks between runs and second up whereas the eventual winner was hard on the seven day back up. Yiyi to go one better.

1 Wairere Falls (Bet Now: $5.00) is a very genuine animal for Chris Waller that was knocking on the door to win and it came at Rosehill a fortnight back. He was given a 12/10 by Tommy Berry and really knuckled down strongly late to wear down stablemate Yiyi. He’ll be around the mark once again.

4 Canasta (Bet Now: $7.00) is racing so well at the moment for Bjorn Baker but he just can’t crack it for a win. He had everything in his corner last start at Rosehill. A soft lead, bias, hard fitness, but he was no match for the Waller pair of Wairere Falls and Yiyi. He’ll run well again, but a place chance at best.

1200m first up looks an ideal kick off point for 2 Law Of Indices (Bet Now: $7.00), a quality import for Annabel Neasham that resumes. He has only raced once in Australia, which came in the Golden Eagle where he ran out of his skin I thought behind I’m Thunderstruck. Just one soft trial, but it was a good piece of work and the stable are bullish.

1 Lost And Running (Bet Now: $3.10) is a beauty. Very genuine animal for John O’Shea where the jury was out on him somewhat early on in the Spring, whether or not he was a top class horse. He proved he was with a gallant fourth in The Everest, second to Eduardo in the Classique Legend before bolting up in The Hunter. He has trialled super in readiness…just whether this tops him for the Canterbury Stakes, the market will tell you if he’s ready.

11 Inanup (Bet Now: $67.00) has a good second up record so I think he can be an improver at odds. First run for Bjorn Baker came two weeks back at Rosehill over 1200m where he paraded like he would need the run and that is how it panned out behind Rule Of Law. Fitter and down in the weights, he can sneak a first four spot.

Not much can be said that hasn’t already been said about 8 Espiona (Bet Now: $1.65). She could be the next big thing of Australian racing. Visually, she has been spectacular, and yes, she trialled super alongside Nature Strip last week, but in the fair dinkum stakes, she has done nothing, yet. That nothing could turn to something very special, starting here.

1200m is on the short side for 5 Fangirl (Bet Now: $9.50) but she is loaded with talent. Resumes for Chris Waller after a very good Spring, highlighted by a Carbine Club win on Derby Day at Flemington. Her trials suggest she’ll need every bit of 1200m and more, but she’ll be strong late.

13 Jal Lei (Bet Now: $31.00) is an interesting runner. This run will be a guide as to whether she’s ready for this level and beyond or is she just a benchmark horse. Beat the older mares in good style fresh at Canterbury and I thought she trialled up quite well last week alongside stablemates Quantico and Lost And Running, so keen to see how she goes.

Don’t underestimate a champion so despite a couple of plain looking trials, I have to respect 9 Verry Elleegant (Bet Now: $4.60). She comes back for a 2022 prep with an eye towards the Arc, so whatever she does here, she will clearly improve on, and the trials suggest as much, but she’s a fighter and a winner, and an all time great, and a bit of juice in the track is perfect.

I’m very interested in 8 Maximal (Bet Now: $12.00), who resumes for John O’Shea. He has only been seen once in Australia, which was the Golden Eagle where he ran a super race in defeat behind I’m Thunderstruck. His two trials, for the most, have been a touch on the sluggish side, but he hasn’t worn Blinkers. They are on for the return and he has class at this distance range.

6 Riodini (Bet Now: $8.50) is a quality son of Proisir for the WaterBott camp that resumes. He brings with him some A1 form from the Spring, highlighted by seconds to Think It Over and Verry Elleegant, which does reads well for a race like this. Good fresh record and he has trialled up well. I say he comes here to run very well fresh.

14 Promise Of Success (Bet Now: $6.50) is a quality mare for John O’Shea that resumes. This mare put together a strong record during the Spring, winning a few races and was going to around favourite in the 1400m Mares race on Cup Day at Flemington but was a late scratching. Has trialled up well leading in and should be strong late.

1 Vangelic (Bet Now: $19.00) is an interesting mare. WaterBott trained four year old that is first up, having not raced since the Golden Eagle where she ran a beauty when third to I’m Thunderstruck. Her prep in readiness for her return is a query, but she has class and that will carry her a fair way.

Kristen Buchanan is a genius and it was there to see with 15 Moonshine Lady (Bet Now: $41.00) when she won a few weeks ago. First run for the stable, she led throughout on the Kenso track and wasn’t getting beat from the 600m mark. Likely cops pressure on speed this time, but hard to ignore anything the stable saddles up at the moment.

1 True Detective (Bet Now: $9.00) looks hard to beat here for Chris Waller. Resumed with a strong on speed win at Rosehill before going to the Carrington over 1400m here where he was far from disgraced in defeat behind the very much in form Special Reward. He does have a good track/distance record and back to 88 grade, he appeals.

10 Bound To Win (Bet Now: $6.50) is a quality mare for Team Snowden that resumes and I think she can resume a winner. Was close up in both runs during the Autumn in tidy races that had good depth. Dodged the Spring and has tuned up for her return with two strong 1000m trial efforts, so for mine she’s got the grounding to run well fresh.

13 Papal Warrior (Bet Now: $10.00) would be better suited in a 78, but often we see these kind of horses thrown in the deep end for an 88 and usually run well. He’s an honest customer for Chris Waller that hasn’t been far away this prep. Not sure he wins, but one for multiples.

BEST BET: Race Seven Number 8 Espiona

NEXT BEST: Race One Number 2 Metallicity

LONG SHOT: Race Two Number 1 Napoleon Solo
