A nine race program has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out 7.5 metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:32) Eloise Gannon Foundation Plate (Class 6) 1200m
5 Jadentom (Bet Now: $3.40) is a talented mare trained by Lindsay Hatch who was a notable drifter in betting when resuming during the Townsville Carnival but aided by a fast speed and a lovely ride from Justin Stanley, she powered home to nab the heavily backed Bold Shot right on the peg. Proven city performer who should only improve off that.
3 Zumbelina (Bet Now: $4.00) is a talented daughter of Stratum that resumes for the Chris Waller yard. She is a very good fresh horse and she does find quite a winnable race here. This girl hasn’t raced since the Weetwood when finishing down the track behind Amanaat. Trialled well enough and does have class on her side.
8 Canberra (Bet Now: $27.00) is the really interesting runner. Formerly with Chris Waller, now is with Matty Dunn and he is quite good at improving these tried horses. Thought she trialled up well a couple of weeks back at Ballina and though not a noted fresh performer, I reckon she’s a definite yard/market watch first run for the new stable.
Race 2. (12:07) Solid Ground Landscaping Handicap 1110m
Jump, run and win…that looks the set up for 1 Ef Troop (Bet Now: $1.65) here. High class animal resuming for Tony Gollan after a pretty good 2YO campaign, which saw him run bravely in both the Magic Millions and Golden Slipper, with a narrow second in the Todman in between. Brilliant trial win here last week, he looks ready to go.
5 Elixir (Bet Now: $10.00) is a nice looking type for Les Kelly who was well backed when debuting over the 900m at the Gold Coast where he was three wide on speed but despite that burn on the home turn, he finished best and drew away to win impressively. Up to the 1110m will really suit and is a must for exotics.
10 Mittere (Bet Now: $27.00) is still a maiden for Danny Bougoure but from the inside gate, he can perhaps fill a place. Looked to have his chance first up during the Grafton Carnival before being held in a Ballina maiden. Draws to follow Pinch Memory and being third up, he does have hard fitness under the belt.
Race 3. (12:42) Moda Events Portside Handicap 1350m
7 Time To Torque (Bet Now: $4.80) on top in a race I’m not sure I want to get involved in. Resumed last Saturday here where he got well back off the speed and didn’t get the greatest amount of luck in the straight behind Tarzan. I like he is backing up a week later immediately and this race isn’t overly strong to the eye.
2 Order Again (Bet Now: $3.90) is a very good gelding that resumes for Brian Smith. Blessed with so much talent but unfortunately injury has really plagued his career. Had two runs during the Winter Carnival where he really caught the eye in both runs, closing off with purpose. Has no trials, but does have residual fitness. Has to be respected.
1 Siegfried (Bet Now: $19.00) could be an improver if he pings the lids and finds the front. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and couldn’t come on at all behind Sabkhat in a race completely dominated by that horse. He races best when he’s in front or somewhere near the speed. If that eventuates, he can bounce back hard.
Race 4. (13:17) Eaton Services Group Plate (Class 3) 1050m
If she’s right, 11 From Within (Bet Now: $2.70) wins this IMO. Formerly with Ed O’Rourke but is now with Toby Edmonds. Trialled last week here and to my eye went very nicely in winning a 1000m trial in pretty decent time relative to the day. Has form around Charlayne and Alizee…surely that’s good enough to beat these.
3 Tawfiq Boy (Bet Now: $6.00) is a five year old gelding resuming for Kris Lees. He hasn’t raced since the Autumn where he placed in the Kembla heat of the Provincial Championships before finishing down the track in the final. Good fresh horse and I really like what I’ve seen from him in his two trials leading in.
4 Aggravate (Bet Now: $13.00) is a son of Redoute’s Choice resuming for the Les Kelly yard. This bloke hasn’t raced since May 9 when placing over 1100m on his home at the Gold Coast on a heavy surface. Has a really good first up record and interesting he resumes without a trial under the belt. Kept safe in betting too noteworthy.
Race 5. (13:52) Brisbane BMW Handicap 2050m
3 Ruling Dynasty (Bet Now: $4.40) has really turned the corner in his career since joining the Rob Heathcoate team. Good run two back in the Tatts Mile before stepping up to the 2200m her where he was just outgunned in the shadows of the peg by Brilliant Jet. Hard 2200m run under the belt, back to 2000m, he’s a key threat.
8 I’m Belucci (Bet Now: $8.00) should just about be at peak fitness now fourth up from a long spell. He comes through the Irish Optimism race here from a fortnight ago where he was close up behind the Waller galloper, beaten just under two lengths. He’s got the upside over these and should get clear air from the gate.
1 Montauk (Bet Now: $14.00) is a bit of a bludger but at this level he has to be seriously considered. He lumped the big weight in the Grafton Cup last time out and he tried very hard under Michael McNab but just couldn’t quite see it out behind First Crush. This is the easiest race he has contested in some time and should take some beating.
Race 6. (14:27) Ray White Ascot Plate (Class 6) 1200m
11 Tabbing (Bet Now: $8.00) is racing in career best form at the moment for Steve O’Dea, winning three on the bounce, the latest coming three weeks back at this track/distance when toughing it out really strongly on speed to get the job done. More depth here clearly, but gets right down in the weights and looks to get a good run near the pace.
8 Suspense (Bet Now: $4.20) looks well placed here by Team Snowden in search of some winning form. Bounced back to positive form a fortnight back at Rosehill when a narrow second to the low flying Eusebio. That does read well for this and the trip north for the Class 6 has been a winning formula for the stable in recent times.
3 Fortensky (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Love Conquers All resuming for Chris Waller. This gelding was an absolute iron horse during the Summer/Autumn, running quite consistently before just fading away towards the end of last prep. He’s a bomb when produced and was given a quiet trial recently at the Gold Coast.
Race 7. (15:07) Kelly Lawyers Handicap (0MW) 1650m
Tough race but I’ve landed with 9 Pleased (Bet Now: $7.00). Former Godolphin galloper who is having his second prep for the Stephen Lee team. Resumed over the 1350m here at the midweeks and finished off quite well I thought when second to Deer Mountain given he only had the one soft trial leading in. Should come right on from that, up to the mile a big tick and has upside.
6 Cedarwood (Bet Now: $5.00) is bursting to win a race for Chris Waller but he does face a couple of nice up and comers here. Colless rode the horse an absolute treat at this track/distance three weeks ago and he looked home but the lightweight and finale of Pressway came to the fore late and he nabbed him. He’ll run well again. Not sure he wins.
1 Victory Eight (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Trevor Miller trained gelding who is racing quite consistently at the moment but has to produce it away from his home track at the Sunny Coast. His last six starts have come on the home track, which has seen him win and place on a further couple of occasions. If he ticks the Doomben box, he’s right in the game.
Race 8. (15:47) Athletes Foot Chermside & North Lakes Handicap (75) 1350m
Back to 1350m a little concern, but have to go with 11 Pressway (Bet Now: $3.90). Not sure running down Cedarwood is something you’d want high on the CV, but to be fair, he did a really good job to get the win given that horse was off and gone for the prize while Pressway was back and wide. He savaged the line late, with a 4.5kg weight pull mind you, to win. Will have to work hard for the win this time around but he’s a talented horse.
14 Makes You Think (Bet Now: $4.80) is a son of So You Think for Steve O’Dea who should be just about at peak fitness now third up from a spell. Good resumption at the Sunny Coast behind Jetsonic before racing over 1200m here where I thought he had his chance in the end when fourth to Happy Hooves. Be wary of the third up bounce back.
Greg Cornish has 2 Charlie Cat (Bet Now: $34.00) flying this prep. He looked a good thing when racing over the 1350m at Ipswich last time out but the late market drift had me a touch concerned. Didn’t matter in the end as class came to the fore and he finished best. He’ll be better with that run under the belt and is a proven city performer.
Race 9. (16:27) Q Reno Handicap (75) 1350m
3 Hingus Rose (Bet Now: $6.50) is a daughter of Swiss Ace for Stuart Kendrick who should be respected. She comes through a 70 at this track/distance a fortnight ago where she tried really hard but couldn’t reel in dominant all the way winner Arena Salon. Depth doesn’t look as strong this time around, she’s hard fit and in form.
4 Romney’s Choice (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Chris Anderson trained mare who has been outstanding this time in. Resumed with a closing second over 1200m here behind the in form El Shaday before contesting the Mother’s Gift during the Grafton Carnival where she was well backed late and the punters got it spot on as she came with a well timed run to get the win. Tick over trial last week looked pretty good to the eye. Can only see improvement.
9 Splitter (Bet Now: $6.00) a key threat for me. This daughter of Foxwedge looks to be going quite well this time in for the Tony Gollan camp. Should have won first up at Lismore had it not been for interference. Then went to Ipswich and got the job done before racing in a 2YO/3YO race over 1200m here and just missed out when third to Goodonya Sonja. 1350m looks okay and she has the form on the board.
