Sunshine Coast is where Queensland metro racing takes place on Saturday, with a couple of features the highlight for the meeting, the Winx Guineas (1600m) and Glasshouse Handicap (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:18) Butler Mcdermott Lawyers Hcp 1000m
2 Aspen Lad (Bet Now: $6.50) has done an outstanding job in North Queensland and is simply too good for them up there so he deserves a crack at metro level. He ran last Tuesday at Mackay when leading and looked to be going a bit keenly but he dashed away on the turn and was just far too good. I think he can measure up here.
Does class get 1 Kisukano (Bet Now: $2.25) home? Mick Nolan trained filly that is the only horse to beat Rothfire, who of course went on to win the JJ Atkins, which is A1 2YO form. From all reports, she lit up the track when winning a Toowoomba jumpout last week. You’d think she has bigger fish to fry than this, so how forward will she be? Does she need to be fully fit to win?
5 Bad Barista (Bet Now: $6.50) is a daughter of Spill The Beans for Rex Lipp that had good market support when debuting over 1100m at Ipswich and the market got it spot on, leading throughout and she gave them a spanking under Emma Ljung. Did she beat much? I’m saying that field had some dept to it, but not to the level here. Still, looks to have above average ability.
Race 2. (12:53) Xxxx Dry (rs0mw) 1200m
8 Socialising (Bet Now: $1.70) hasn’t done much wrong this time in and I think she can win again. Impressive two back over 1200m at Doomben before going to Ipswich over the same trip where I’m not sure she was 100% happy around the tight track but class got her home and she was much too good. Good test here, but hard to knock the way she’s going.
Gee this race has a tail behind the fav. Hard to find anything to beating her, but 1 Bold Xavvi (Bet Now: $8.50) does come here with relative fresh legs off the back of a sharp win at Rockhampton when backed as if unbeatable and duly saluted. Well in after the claim for Huxtable and on the home track. Doesn’t want the track too wet.
11 Rothabye (Bet Now: $23.00) is on the quick back up for Trevor Miller after racing here on Sunday where he got back off the speed and was never really a winning factor but liked the way he finished off very late when third to the Stuart Kendrick pair, Winning Shot and Yeahnah. Saves his best for here. Just a query on the quick turnaround.
Race 3. (13:28) Reed Racing Qld Plate (c3) 1400m
Going with 4 Arthur In Charge (Bet Now: $2.10) for Mark Newnham. Two runs back from a break have been quite good. Toughed it out strongly to win first up at Newcastle before going to 1350m at Doomben where he got back in the run and closed off strongly to run third to Starla. Like him up to 1400m, got upside and in the right stable.
Can 2 Cloak (Bet Now: $3.50) handle the wet ground? David Vandyke trains this galloper, who had his first run for the stable at Ipswich over 1350m when getting the suck run in behind before getting clear air late and finishing best. His wet track form is a bit suspect, but with this stable, I think you have to watch the market and see what it does.
9 Mood (Bet Now: $12.00) is the one with the wet track Sunny Coast form and I think that’s a big tick for her against these. She’s returned in fab order, her latest start seeing her bolt up at this track/distance and showing good change up speed when clicked up. Harder here, but she’s on her home deck and is in winning form.
Race 4. (14:07) Stanley River T'bred (bm80) 1400m
10 Red Doulton (Bet Now: $4.20) is on his home track now and she can be a big improver. Ran last Saturday at the Gold Coast where the market didn’t want a bar of her in what looked a thin race and it was spot on. She found nothing in the straight and was very disappointing behind Ocean Waves. Now on her home track, fitter, hard to beat but want to see what the market does.
If I like Red Doutlon, have to like 9 Ocean Waves (Bet Now: $4.60) given this Ocean Park gelding did beat Red Doulton in that Gold Coast race last Saturday by just over four lengths and actually meets that horse half a kilo better at the weights for beating her, so if you’re a weights fan, you’ll be all over Ocean Waves to beat Red Doulton. Just think it’s a better set up for the mare but hard to ignore Ocean Waves.
4 Prince Of Tie (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Casino Prince for the Kelly Schweida team that had good market support when resuming at Doomben three weeks ago when leading in a Class 6 and tried hard, but first up on testing ground, condition just gave out but fought on well behind Sofie’s Gold Class. Normally runs flat second up before a third up bounce back, so one for multiples I’d suggest.
Race 5. (14:47) Fuji Xerox Business Centre (c6) 1600m
7 Lucky Jackson (Bet Now: $2.15) loves racing at the Sunny Coast and is a key chance. Ran over the mile at Eagle Farm four weeks ago and was quite good late from the back when fifth to Barefoot. I’d love a rise in trip for him, but he’s a two time winner at the mile and the speed should be genuine, so he’ll get his chance to finish over the top.
2 Prometheus (Bet Now: $2.70) has done a good job since joining the Sears camp. First up win at the Gold Coast was quite good before two placings in town, firstly behind Red Chase at Eagle Farm before going to Doomben when third to Milk Man. Stable is starting to find a purple patch again after a lean run and he’s got the right form.
11 Twilighter (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Desleigh Forster trained mare that resumes. This daughter of Reliable Man hasn’t raced since March 7 over 2200m at Eagle Farm when down the track behind the then in form Quality Seeker. No public trials but 1600m fresh tells me a bit of work has gone into her for her resumption.
Race 6. (15:27) Access Insulation Hcp 1000m
Think this will turn into a slog late, so want to be on a horse who can handle wet ground and be strong late. Think 8 Clever Miss (Bet Now: $19.00) fits that criteria for Stuart Kendrick. Not sure what happened last Sunday here. She was Chautauqua like early, not mustering at all and was struggling to keep up, but she picked up all of a sudden and charged home. They’ll go quick here and she could well have last say.
2 Howwonderfullifeis (Bet Now: $2.40) is a Tony Gollan trained filly who was very good two back in the Mick Dittman behind Aquitaine before going to the 1110m at Doomben three weeks ago in what was a moderate Class 3 and despite not really handling the wet track when asked for the big effort, she was far too good. Back to 1000m I do like and hopefully the track isn’t too wet.
10 Gideons (Bet Now: $9.00) is a jump/run type and I think that’s well suited to this track, which is what we saw on Sunday here at the track/distance when leading and bolting up under Jake Bayliss. Clearly a harder assignment here with more depth, but he’s got the right racing pattern to give this a shake and give them something to chase.
Race 7. (16:03) Winx Guineas 1600m
It’s going to take a good one to beat 1 Star Of Michelin (Bet Now: $2.80) on his home track. Was down to trial but with nothing on offer, pretty much had his barrier trial last Saturday at Eagle Farm over 1400m and produced one of the wins of the day given he started his run around 650-700m run out and given it was his first run in around seven weeks, he was entitled to tire late, but he was actually strongest on the line. Big tracks are his go, and on his home track, 1600m, really hard to beat.
7 Knight Mariner (Bet Now: $4.40) has done nothing wrong in two runs back from a spell, albeit in easier races than this. Knuckled down strongly to win the maiden first up at Doomben before going to Ipswich when given a 12/10 ride by Nothdurft and charged home late to win. Should eat up the Sunny Coast mile and is a key chance.
13 Al Jood (Bet Now: $11.00) can be a big improver here at odds for Chris Munce. She drops a fair way in overall depth after facing Vanna Girl her past couple. In fact, two back she ran a close up third to that filly, so that form reads very well for this and she’s 2/2 on wet ground. Been given a little freshen up so keen to see how she goes.
Race 8. (16:48) Glasshouse Hcp 1400m
6 Soxagon (Bet Now: $1.85) for me but I’d wait until race day to back him because the opening price of $2.15/thereabouts was poison. Hugely talented four year old that was afforded such a lovely ride from Brad Stewart to win at Doomben two weeks ago, getting the box seat after jumping well and from the home turn, it was raced over and he won quite comfortably on the line. He’s Stakes class for sure and can confirm that with a win here.
11 Krone (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Tony Gollan trained mare that is knocking on the door to take one out. Comes through the Sapphire from two weeks back at Doomben where she loomed to win and was hailed as the winner, but got bloused near the peg by an in form Sure Knee. Back to 1400m from a soft gate, she’s a key threat.
Fresh legs and back to 1400m, can see 2 Victory Eight (Bet Now: $15.00) running a much improved race. Four weeks between runs since contesting the Eagle Farm Mile when down the track behind Gaulois. Eight of his ten career wins have come at the Sunny Coast. He saves his best for here and overall, this isn’t a strong race.
Race 9. (17:25) Kendrick Racing Plate (c6) 1000m
13 Musical Genius (Bet Now: $3.80) is a daughter of Swiss Ace that resumes for the Barry Lockwood team. This mare hasn’t raced since January 16 when winning in good style at Doomben after getting the run of the race just behind the speed and finishing best, plus was found to be lame post race so there was even more merit to the win. Good fresh record and recent trial was encouraging.
16 Tullio (Bet Now: $3.90) should be fine at 1000m. Both starts/wins this prep have come over 900m at the Gold Coast, the latest coming on June 26 when given a lovely ride just off the speed by Nothdurft and was able to wear them down to get the job done. He’s got his confidence up and now seems the right time to test him at Saturday grade again.
2 Malvern Estate (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Desleigh Forster trained gelding that resumes. This six year old hasn’t raced for over a year since contesting the Eye Liner at Ipswich when down the track behind Man Booker, a Group l performer. Long time off so a real unknown as to how forward he is, but he’s a definite yard/market watch.
