The Belmont Winter Carnival continues this Saturday where it is Hyperion Stakes Day. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:59) Free Entry To Belmont Pk Plate 1400m
2 Capo Veloce (Bet Now: $3.60) gets the nod, just. Ran over this track/distance last Wednesday where he had a suck run behind the speed and looked big time to beat Final Seroes but that horse kicked strongly when it mattered and just got the verdict. Gets an ideal map once again and he was 1000m to 1400m so now has that 1400m run under the belt.
1 Final Series (Bet Now: $6.00) has been quite effective once he has stepped up in trip. He was there to be beaten in the race mentioned above but loved the way he dug in when it mattered and actually clocked the best last 200m of the race. Always a positive sign when a leader can do that. Hard to beat with a likely soft lead on the cards once again.
4 Wozzeck (Bet Now: $16.00) should appreciate a rise to 1400m. He debuted two weeks back over 1200m here where he was back near last in the run and while he was never a winning threat, I didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind Top Of The Pops. Fitter and up in trip, an improved showing is on the cards.
Race 2. (14:34) Tabtouch Westspeed (Rs0ly) 1200m
1 Safety Bay (Bet Now: $4.00) is the pony to beat I’d suggest. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago where she was given a peach by Taj Dyson and in a driving go, she got there, but had to share the spoils with She’s Puzzling. Got upside to come, has returned in super order…she’ll do me.
5 Stella Fair (Bet Now: $6.00) comes back to 1200m and I think that will suit her. Ran over 1300m here a fortnight back where she was near the speed throughout and battled away pretty well in defeat behind Featherweight, beaten just under three lengths. Back a fair bit in depth and back to 1200m, she appeals.
7 Rulelee (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Susan Olive trained mare that can be an improver at odds. Ran 1400m two weeks back at this track where she was back to near last in the run and while she was never a factor, her finale was more than sound. Back in trip I find interesting but should be strong late.
Race 3. (15:09) Morley Growers Market (Bm61+) 1300m
IMO, it will be a case of good luck beating 4 Red Fifty Three (Bet Now: $4.00) if he’s anywhere near right and I think he is. Resumes for Grant Williams after a two run Summer prep where he was brave in the Magic Millions before a down the track effort at Ascot. Given a good spell and gee he looked to move well in a Lark Hill trial win. I think he’ll win this and then go around in the Winter features for the three year olds.
2 Via Monte (Bet Now: $4.60) is racing very well for Dan Morton but is just finding it hard to win. He tried his guts out here three weeks ago but couldn’t get past a tough nut in Warm N Fuzzy, who had complete control and was too good. Back to his own age, if he gets the right drag into the race, he can be dangerous.
7 Cold Shizzle (Bet Now: $21.00) is getting close to D-Day. Three weeks between runs since a down the track effort here behind Warm N Fuzzy where he seemingly had every chance but was plain in the straight. Jury is out but I think hard fit now and back to his own age helps.
Race 4. (15:45) Heineken 3 (Bm78+) 1000m
3 Angelic Miss (Bet Now: $4.00) clearly on top. Simon Miller trained mare that resumes, having not raced since the Summer Carnival when down the track in the Starstruck but was only beaten three lengths and did win a couple of Stakes races prior. Given a good break and her trials indicate she’s ready to go fresh. Can see her sitting off the hot speed and finishing over the top.
Best version of 4 Buzzom (Bet Now: $8.50) is certianly capable. Just a query of where she is at after a somewhat disappointing Autumn prep, her last run being April 30 when down the track in the Sheila Gwynne at Ascot. Given the mini break, back to a sprint trip, and I did like her tick over trial.
You know what you will get with 1 Mervyn (Bet Now: $5.00). He’ll jump, run, go hard and try to pinch it. Resumed in the Northam Stakes and just found them too sharp when down the track behind Elite Street. This looks more his go and if the track is playing on speed, he’ll give plenty of cheek.
Race 5. (16:24) Amelia Park (Rs1mw) 2100m
5 Dark Lass (Bet Now: $13.00) gets the nod. She was 1650m to 2100m when racing here last time out where the market took a set against her and she just couldn’t quite quicken but stayed on and was sound when fourth to Sunsphere. Has that 2100m run under the belt now and down to 54kg, I think she’ll run well.
6 Phenomenal Anomaly (Bet Now: $8.00) commands respect for Adam Durrant. Ran voer this tracl/distance two weeks ago and didn’t quite get the rub of the green at a crucial stage. Not sure he wins, but clearly should have finished closer behind Bold Success. He’ll stay all day and has room for improvement.
13 Secret Pearl (Bet Now: $21.00) is a hard mare to follow and trust with confidence but her best is clearly good enough. Ran behind Bold Success last start where she got a mile out of her ground but was never a factor, albeit did make some headway late. If she’s within range, she can threaten.
Race 6. (17:00) Glenroy Chaff (Rs1mw) 1200m
4 Memorable Miss (Bet Now: $4.00) on top in what looks a two horse race. This mare has her first run for Michael Grantham and we’ve seen that this stable is no negative switch. This mare is first up and while she is better suited over a touch further, she has trialled up very nicely leading in and Chris Parnham steers. She’ll do me.
1 Premium Choice (Bet Now: $4.80) has been up a while but is holding his form really nicely. He found a very weak race two weeks ago and duly saluted, giving them an absolute spanking in a dominant display. Clearly more depth here, but hard to knock the way he’s racing at the moment.
6 Guard The Safe (Bet Now: $12.00) is racing in pretty solid form for Fred Kersley. Three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he got back in the run and made up some headway without threatening behind a talented animal, Sniparoochy. That form reads very well for this.
Race 7. (17:37) Vale Merv Posner (Bm72+) 1200m
2 It’sarayday (Bet Now: $2.50) to bounce back. Like most, I was quite keen on his chances when he raced here three weeks ago but he produced a career worst effort when beaten five lengths and finishing 10/14. He was a mess pre race and post race, he was found to be lame and with mucus, so clear excuses. If he brings his best, he wins.
7 Timely Outburst (Bet Now: $3.50) is a key threat. Three weeks between runs since sitting on speed in the same race that It’sarayday contested. He tried his guts out but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Rokanori. The overall depth isn’t as strong and with a soft run on speed, he’s a winning chance.
4 Zephyr Queen (Bet Now: $51.00) is a Jim Taylor trained mare that resumes. She had a one run Summer prep, which saw her finish down the track at Ascot behind Island Charm. Two trials to get ready have been strong and at her best, she can threaten. The knock is the Bar Plates are back on.
Race 8. (18:15) Hyperion Stakes 1600m
I think there is a great each way bet here in the shape of 12 Kaptain Kaos (Bet Now: $15.00). On paper, he has been on the plain side in two runs back, but each time he has drawn wide and been forced to go back to near last. I think here now, drawing gate three, he can settle much closer in the run and the positive for me is that Chris Parnham is sticking. Each way for me all day.
10 God Has Chosen (Bet Now: $1.85) is flying, though I will say he has been very well placed by the camp, and last start in the Belmont Sprint, the ride from CJP to get him to win was a ride that W Pike would have enjoyed. That aside, the horse is going really well and maps very nicely.
3 Platoon (Bet Now: $20.00) is dangerous. He was good late in the Belmont Sprint after getting a fair way back in the run behind God Has Chosen. He’ll get better as the distances increase but the big tick for him leading into this is that the Bar Plates are off so his feet must be in good order.
Race 9. (18:50) Crown Towers (Bm66+) 1400m
5 Billy Ray (Bet Now: $7.00) has found his winning groove and he can keep winning. Lovely ride from CJP saw him win here two weeks ago, sitting on a slow speed and kicking clear at the right time to fend them off and win. Maps to get an ideal run again and provfe hard to beat once again.
1 Crescent City (Bet Now: $17.00) is a key threat if the tempo is more genuine. It was a crawl in the Billy Ray race mentioned above and actually battled on pretty well in defeat given the race shape. Think he’l get a good speed to sit off and prove to be strong at the end of the race.
Fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks for 7 Fashion Queen (Bet Now: $14.00). Resumed over 1300m two weeks back where she got back to near last in the run and while she was never a winning factor, her finale was actually pretty good behind Featheweight. Dangerous if she can settle closer in the run.
