Race 1. (12:35) Premier Signs (Bm78) 2400m
9 Meiner Legacy (Bet Now: $SP.00), I assume, has eyes on the Adelaide Cup given he does seem to be a 3000m+ horse. He won over the 3000m last time out at The Vallet and was dominant, proving quite strong at the end when winning, beating Monreal, who led throughout and was dominant at Cranbourne next start, so the form reads well and despite a class/depth rise, he’ll be one of the strongest late.
6 So Unusual (Bet Now: $SP.00) is another that I would assume is heading towards the Adelaide Cup. His last run came five weeks ago at this track/distance. There was plenty of ticker about the win because he was there to be beaten but he found under pressure to fend off Wahine Toa and win. Tick over trial last week was good, he has upside/progression and is tough.
8 Hint Of Stars (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 2400m. He ran over 2040m three weeks back at The Valley where he got a fair way back in the run and was never really a factor but didn’t mind the way he finished his race off late in the piece behind Ain’tnodeeldun. His UK form is 2400m+ so he gets to that trip here and clearly has more upside than most.
Race 2. (13:10) Autumn Stakes 1400m
4 Pericles (Bet Now: $SP.00), potentially, could be the best 3YO boy in Australia. His Spring prep was just crazy, which is very unusual for this stable who are normally elite with placement. You’d think they have a plan mapped out for him this time in and his trial work indicates he has come back in super order. On potential, I think he’s the one to beat, but watch the market and see what it does.
5 Amenable (Bet Now: $SP.00) creates plenty of interest. Price/Kent trained three year old that resumes, having not raced since the Caulfield Guineas where he was very good from near last on the turn, beaten a length by Golden Mile. Jumped out without headgear at Cranbourne before the Blinkers were on in a Geelong trial last week and seemed to move pretty well near the speed. Blinkers off and Winkers on for the return, but with the grounding, I think he’s here to run a beauty, so watch the market.
6 Calico Jack (Bet Now: $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and prove hard to run down. He lacks the class of some of these but has the hard race fitness/experience under the belt. He has won his past two, bolting up two back at Cranbourne before defying a notable betting drift to spank his rivals at Sandown. With his racing style, I am sure he’ll give a good sight.
Race 3. (13:45) Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) 1100m
Fascinated to see how 3 Brave Halo (Bet Now: $SP.00) goes but he is a serious colt from WA. 3/3 back home during the Carnival and purely on raw times, he is doing better than what Amelia’s Jewel did, and she was the best 2YO last season, so on that basis, I think he goes very good. Trialled well last week at Belmont when winning a 400m trial. Lands on speed, he’s tough and has change up speed. Hard to beat.
7 Gangitano (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a colt I have time for. Team Yargi trained juvenile that is first up after debuting in the Spring in the Merson Cooper and I thought did a good job late in the piece when third to Little Brose. He was back that afternoon. In the recent jumpout win, he led throughout and was pushed out to win, but loved the way he responded to win and win well. Needs to win/run second to get the prizemoney for a definite start in the big race, but I am confident he can do that here.
4 Corniche (Bet Now: $SP.00) has been pretty good in a couple of runs for James Cummings. Did more than enough on debut at The Valley behind Croatian Belle before going here in the Preview and I thought worked to the line pretty well late in the piece when second to all the way winner The Instructor. I think getting to 1100m will be ideal for him and should be strong at the end.
Race 4. (14:20) Blue Diamond Prelude (F) 1100m
Mick Price said this week that 1 Charm Stone (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the best 2YO he has trained. Two ways you could take that comment. You can take is as fact and if so, bet up with confidence and she’ll be winning. Or, given there is a Yearling Sale on next week, is he pumping up the tyres and staying in the good books. Whichever way you look at it, this filly is smart, has trialled up super for her return and purely on form, she’s the one to bet on, and with a high degree of confidence.
7 Zousuko (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a filly with talent for John McArdle. This girl was prepped up to be dangerous in the Spring but didn’t run and was given a break. Has come back this prep and debuted in the Preview where she kept finding the line in a good effort at start one when second to De Sonic Boom. I think she’ll take good improvement from that and is certainly a definite winning chance.
3 Exploring (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a slight query at 1100m but she has the right racing pattern and is quite genuine. Led throughout to win on debut down the straight at Flemington before going to the Preview where she was on speed and though beaten off late, she stuck on well enough when a close up fourth to De Sonic Boom. The end of 1100m will be the query but she’ll give a sight.
Race 5. (15:00) Kevin Hayes Stakes 1100m
6 Laced Up Heels (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks a filly with a serious engine under the hood. Luke Fernie trained filly that resumes, having not raced since the WA Carnival when second in the WA Champion Fillies where IMO, she just didn’t run the mile out. To me, she seems more a sharp filly best suited at sprint trips, so like that she resumes at 1100m here, and she sizzled in a Belmont trial last week. Confident she measures up.
1 She’s Licketysplit (Bet Now: $SP.00) has the runs on the board to command respect here. Andrew Forsman trains this filly, who is first up, having not raced since the Empire Rose when leading and tiring late behind Icebath but was at the end of her prep. Trialled back home in NZ at Tauranga and while she ran second, I thought she was safely held by a horse that has only won a Cambridge Synthetic maiden winner, so the jury is somewhat out, but she has class.
10 Clarity (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one that can be included in wider multiples. This filly resumed two weeks back at The Valley where they went hard in front, setting it up for the two sitting behind the speed battle and launched, but couldn’t quite get there when second to Fission. Needs to improve big time to beat the better fillies here, but she does have race fitness on her side.
Race 6. (15:40) Rubiton Stakes 1100m
If 5 Uncommon James (Bet Now: $SP.00) is ready to go, which it looks like he is, then good luck beating him. High quality sprinter for the O’Dea/Hoysted camp that resumes. He looked a Group l winner in waiting in the Spring after winning the Regal Roller but he suffered an injury and was spelled. Resumes and gee he looked good in a recent trial win at Deagon. 1100m is on the short side, but I just think he has the brilliance to beat these.
6 Chain Of Lightning (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a quality mare for Peter Moody that resumes. She really came of age in the Spring, headlined by a dominant Tristarc win on Caulfield Cup Day. She then went to the Golden Eagle but it was an end of prep run behind stablemate I Wish I Win. Unbeaten fresh, jumped out well and maps to stalk the speed. One of the main threats.
9 Triple Missile (Bet Now: $SP.00) may need the run but he has a motor and will launch late. Lindsey Smith trained gelding that resumes after a two run Spring prep, the latest run being on Derby Day and IMO Froggy rode it way too cute, timing his run way too late when second to Argentia. Jumpout and trial efforts suggest he has eyes on something else, probably the Newmarket, but will be strong late.
Race 7. (16:20) C.F. Orr Stakes 1400m
1 I’m Thunderstruck (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks ready to rock and roll for the Price/Kent team despite eyes are on bigger prizes. He had a fab Spring and was enormous on a number of occasions, notably in the Cox Plate when a fast finishing second to Anamoe. His jumpout/trial work has been as good as he has produced IMO and I do think Sandown will suit him much better than Caulfield. He’s clearly the one to beat.
10 Jacquinot (Bet Now: $SP.00) has the class and brilliance to measure up. He resumed in the Manfred on Australia Day where he looked gone and was whacking halfway down the straight but he picked up and launched late nearer the inside to drive hard late and win in the last stride. He’ll eat up 1400m here and with the run under the belt, weight pull, he appeals big time.
5 Western Empire (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one I could include in wider multiples. He’s had a couple of runs for John Leek Jr and while he hasn’t quite set the world on fire in those runs, I thought he worked home okay late in the piece two weeks back in the Australia Stakes behind Jigsaw. Love him up to 1400m and getting to the bigger track, I think he can run a much improved race.
Race 8. (17:00) Carlyon Cup 1600m
6 Sunshine Rising (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to be absolutely flying for Mark Newnham. Former Hong Kong galloper that had two runs in Sydney during the Summer. Enormous against the bias in the Festival and then was excellent from last in a field of 20 in The Ingham behind Kirwan’s Lane. Given a mini break and I loved the trial win at Randwick where he got back, saved ground and went through his gears nicely to win the trial. He could be an absolute moral against these.
12 Pounding (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a very genuine animal for Peter Moody. Three weeks between runs since winning over the mile at The Valley where he was given a 12/10 by Kah and in a driving go, was able to finish best and wear down a tough nut in Corner Pocket. I reckon the end of the mile sees him out, and rises in grade/depth, but he’s hard fit, in form and has a good racing style.
Fitter and up to the mile are two big ticks for 14 Normandy Bridge (Bet Now: $SP.00). He resumed in the John Dillon at Sandown where he paraded like he would need the run and that is how it panned out but I actually thought he found the line with purpose and was good in defeat behind Gentleman Roy. Like him up in trip and off his French form, he does have the class to win a race like this.
Race 9. (17:40) Tile Importer (Bm84) 1400m
9 Flash Flood (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a very genuine animal for the Maher/Eustace camp that I think can measure up. He resumed at Pakenham where he did a really good job to win I thought. He was there to be run down but found plenty under pressure to fend them off and win. Fitter and up to 1400m, with good upside to come, he rates quite highly against this lot.
3 Here To Shock (Bet Now: $SP.00) deserves another chance. He is four weeks between runs since racing over the mile at Flemington where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a solid kick but couldn’t quite finish it off and tired late behind the in form Beltoro. He has won at the mile previously but for mine, he is a 1400m horse so back to that trip here, he’s a key threat.
6 William Thomas (Bet Now: $SP.00) is backing up for the third week in a row but he is flying for John Price. Ran last Saturday over 1300m here and worked to the line with real purpose late in the piece when third to Carlisle. The way he is finding the line, 1400m should be ideal, and if he can settle closer in the run, I think the speed on in front will give him every chance.
