Eight races will be run and won under the lights at Canterbury on Friday night. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (17:45) Anz Bloodstock News Mdn Plate 1900m
Bludger of a race to start the meeting. On top is 7 Mezenn (Bet Now: $2.30). Resumed over the mile last Saturday at Newcastle when on speed and she did try hard. Just couldn’t finish the race off and tired late. Think she will come on from that, should lead these up comfortably and prove very hard to run down.
5 The Fringe (Bet Now: $2.40) is a Clare Cunningham trained mare that has showed decent ability in her short career to date. Resumed over the mile at Wyong where she was off the speed and held up at a vital stage when Collett wanted to build the revs. Wasn’t able to but eventually got clear and was good late behind Shamani. Lands the box seat here and up to 1900m is a big tick.
Interesting that 6 Le May (Bet Now: $11.00) was scratched from a much easier race at Queanbeyan on Thursday in preference for this race. Ran at that track last time out and tried hard from near the speed. Just lacked the killer finale to put them away. Lands near the speed here and should run an honest race. Would be surprised if he won though.
Race 2. (18:15) Tab Mdn Hcp 1250m
3 Captivare (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Chris Waller trained three year old that gets the Blinkers off for the first time after resuming at Warwick Farm where he was on speed and looked the winner. Actually did cross the line first but lost the race in the Stewards room due to waywardness. If he puts it all together here, he will take some beating, and J Mac takes the ride.
7 Kiterro (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Pierro filly on debut for Chris Waller. This girl has had two 900m trials at Rosehill this preparation to get ready for start one, and each time she has looked impressive, especially when pressure has been applied. She draws to stalk the speed, has gate one, so will be rail in run, which is a big tick for Canterbury, and overall, this race isn’t strong.
5 Wild Wind (Bet Now: $6.50) needs to improve off his first up run but he does have the Team Hawkes polish and upside to come. Resumed over 1100m at Canterbury where he was off the speed and tried hard, but like most in recent meetings, sitting back at Canterbury has been a negative. His run was good and if he can sit a pair closer in the run nearer the inside, he will be dangerous at odds.
Race 3. (18:45) Sky Racing Active Mdn Hcp 1100m
Think each way you can’t go wrong with 1 Heart Of Siena (Bet Now: $6.50). Resumed over 1200m at Kembla when on speed and she did try very hard. Just reckon 1200m first up found her out late and she felt the pinch when second. Should lead or box seat at worst from the inside and only run well I feel.
5 Aeecee Power (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Chris Waller trained filly that resumes. This is a Magic Millions filly so whether this is a prep run for perhaps the Magic Millions Maiden, not too sure, but she does have ability. Hard in the market on debut back in the Summer when down the track behind Aim. Recent trial was good and stables gets J Mac to steer. Market will be the guide.
8 Tight Ropes (Bet Now: $4.80) deserves another chance. Chris Waller filly that had trialled up quite super prior to resuming here a couple of weeks ago. Was hunted forward to lead and she used all her petrol tickets in doing that, finishing down the track behind La Foret. She’s better than that, so think she deserves another chance.
Race 4. (19:15) Ryde Kia Evening Star (bm78) 1550m
Found this race very tough to sort out. I’ll just go with what I know and that is 5 Tochi (Bet Now: $17.00) saves her best for Canterbury and Tommy Berry rides her better than anyone. Needed the run fresh at Kembla when wide with cover and failing to come on in an on speed dominated affair. If she finds the front and gets control, she will take some running down the way this track has played recently.
4 Irukandji (Bet Now: $11.00) finds one of the easier races he has contested throughout his career. Ran at Rosehill last time out when getting the suck run in behind the speed and battled away behind stablemate He’s A Hotshot. Gets Bowman steering from an inside and the Blinkers are back on, hopefully to spark improvement, because he does have the ability to win a race like this.
Want to give 10 Zidane (Bet Now: $34.00) another chance. On face value, he was ordinary at Hawkesbury on Sunday, but considering he was back near last in the run and the winner went around 33.7 last 600m, those out the back like this guy had no chance. Going well I reckon and is a chance of a surprise win at big odds.
Race 5. (19:45) The Agency Real Estate (bm72) 1250m
2 Darleb (Bet Now: $5.50) is knocking on the door to win one and I do like the step back to 1250m for him. Luckless two back on Hunter Day at Newcastle before going to Rosehill where again the rub of the green didn’t go his way but was still a definite pass mark behind He’s A Hotshot. Hard fit now, drawn well, hard to beat.
3 Smart Image (Bet Now: $2.70) looks a candidate for the Magic Millions Guineas so keen to see how he resumes for Team Snowden. Showed good promise in his first prep, winning the opening two runs before bumping into North Pacific and was spelled soon after. Thought his recent Randwick trial win was outstanding and looks ready to rock and roll.
4 Cafe Royal (Bet Now: $5.00) is certainly good enough to take this out. It was a bludger of a day for Nathan Doyle at Newcastle and this girl started it when she was wide and doing work in the run, but didn’t find much in the straight and was disappointing when last to Bring The Ransom. She’s better than that and deserves another chance.
Race 6. (20:15) Schweppes (bm72) 1100m
Going the way of 2 Malkovich (Bet Now: $2.15) for the Bjorn Baker camp. Has been freshened up since leading throughout and bolting up to win over 1000m at Hawkesbury in a race where the form to come out of it has been pretty good. He’s got great early toe and can cross from the wide gate. 1100m is his limit, but he’ll look the winner for a long way.
1 Super Contender (Bet Now: $2.90) can win, but what will be fascinating as to what it does with this guy. Hard in the market when resuming two weeks ago here. J Mac did a power of work to get on speed but was caught wide throughout and dropped out to not run a place. Has gate one and off previous form, looks the winner. Just a matter of whether or not that last run busted him hence why I think the market will be your guide.
8 Return With Honour (Bet Now: $9.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with the Ryan/Alexiou camp but is now with Annabel Neasham. Has had a couple of months off and has had a switch of stables. Also during that time, he has been gelded. If he brings any hint of his best form, he’s going to take some beating.
Race 7. (20:45) Hyland Race Colours (bm72) 1900m
Tricky race to sort out with confidence this one. In saying that, can have something each way on 10 Alchermes (Bet Now: $13.00). Ron Quinton trained mare that ran over 1500m at Rosehill last time out where she was a bit one paced when the sprint went on but the last 50-75m and through the line, she was quite good. Up to 1900m I see as a positive and gets a jockey upgrade on current form.
3 Kutayha (Bet Now: $2.90) is racing really well this time in for the Chris Waller camp. Lovely ride from J Mac saw him win at this track/distance two weeks ago, sitting parked off the speed and finishing best to score narrowly but impressively. Harder here but like the way he is going about it this time in.
5 Cyber Intervention (Bet Now: $10.00) is a while between wins but his recent runs suggest a win isn’t far off. Should have gone close to winning two back at Rosehill before going to Kembla when ridden positively and trying hard. Just couldn’t quite finish it off and was grabbed late. He’s in good form. Just not winning. Knockout chance.
Race 8. (21:15) Bowermans Furniture (bm72) 1100m
I’m interested in 12 Raison D’Etre (Bet Now: $4.40) for James Cummings. Returns to Sydney after a two run Melbourne Spring where she ran in two blacktype races and was far from disgraced each time she stepped out. Freshened up and given a quiet tick over trial at Gosford to get her ready for this. If she’s anywhere near her best, think she wins.
11 La Foret (Bet Now: $3.50) has a very ordinary draw to overcome, but she looks to have come back in good order. Resumed over 1100m here when near a solid speed throughout before taking the front soon upon straightening and kicking clear late for a dominant win. If she can overcome the barrier, she will take some beating in what looks a competitive race.
10 Look Only (Bet Now: $18.00) has raced in decent city races previously and now back in town again, think she can run a positive race at odds. Comes through the feature sprint race on Queanbeyan Cup Day when heavily backed. Just got too far back and worked home strongly when second. Has the inside gate to use and if they overdo it in front, a win wouldn’t totally shock.
