One of the better race days on the Australian calendar is Magic Millions Day on the Gold Coast and the 2020 edition rolls around this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out a metre from the 1000m-400m; True for the remainder.

Race 1. (13:15) Magic Millions Maiden Plate 1200m
7 He’ll Haunt Us (Bet Now: $5.50) on top for me in the opener. The Price/Kent stable trains this bloke, who returns to racing as a gelding. Had two runs as a 2YO colt during the Autumn and ran well each time in races which have turned out to be excellent form references. Liked the trial win at Doomben and Olly on from a good gate, he’ll do me.
4 Spaceboy (Bet Now: $4.80) certainly won’t be lacking fitness heading into this first up with Gary Portelli. He’s had two strong trials in Sydney to prepare for this, the latest seeing him romp up by a space over 1200m in fast time for the morning. Gets a sweet draw with Nash to steer. Has a few convictions, but off the trials, he’s flying.
3 Hulk (Bet Now: $5.00) is a bit of an enigma for Chris Waller that has teased to win but so far is yet to do it. He resumes here off the back of just one trial, but he was given a good hitout in that trial at Rosehill when third to Freighter. Has the gate to get three wide cover and launch. Just not sure he 100% has that winning desire.
Race 2. (13:50) Magic Millions Quality 1800m
I think 6 Reckless Choice (Bet Now: $2.80) is one of the better bets on the card. Just looks set up perfectly for this race I feel after two runs back from a break, the latest coming two weeks ago in the Bernborough when looming to win, but I reckon his condition just gave out late, with the splits telling the story. At 1800m with 54kg on his back, he’s really likeable.
5 Etana (Bet Now: $2.90) gets one last look before penning her. Was keen on her last Saturday at this track/distance and on the turn, she looked the winner when presented, but as soon as you had that thought, she paddled. Would love some give in the track for her, which she won’t get, but this is a winnable race if she finds her best.
He’s a query at 1800m, but Matty Dunn has 10 Tivoli Street (Bet Now: $11.00) in career best form at the moment. Ran over 1500m at Murwillumbah last time and though he found the A1 ground in the straight, he still spanked them and charged to the line, suggesting further will suit him, which is what he gets here. Good record at the track too.
Race 3. (14:25) Magic Millions Trophy 2400m
2 Black On Gold (Bet Now: $10.00), with the weight pull, gets the nod. Had the freshen up prior to racing in the Summer Cup at Randwick and while Luvaluva was far too good, I liked the way this guy worked home and clocked some good late splits in the process. The way he ran there, 2400m should be fine, in the right stable and his overall form does read very well.
A nation will well and truly for a hero if 1 The Candy Man (Bet Now: $2.00) was to salute. He’s been untouchable since returning to QLD after a failed campaign in Sydney during the Spring. Latest win was outstanding with the 60.5kg. There’s more depth here, goes up in weight, and how many times can you go to the well? Can win, he’s a threat but couldn’t back.
7 Outraged (Bet Now: $61.00) will love this race going up to 2400m. Ran behind The Candy Man two weeks ago at Eagle Farm where I liked him at the big odds and I thought he ran well albeit well held by The Candy Man. Highly doubt he turns the tables, but he has a liking for the Gold Coast and up in trip, he’s a must for multiples, and if he’s big odds like last time, could easily speck him to place.
Race 4. (15:00) Magic Millions Snippets 1200m
He’s just a winner is 1 Kemalpasa (Bet Now: $11.00) and despite being high up in the weights, given his record, I don’t think it’s too bad at all. Hasn’t raced since bolting up down the Flemington straight on Derby Day, beating a quality field, including Zoutori, who was around Santa Ana Lane and Sunlight the start prior, so that form is clearly A1 and the trial win last week was sharp.
5 Champagne Cuddles (Bet Now: $4.60) is an absolute ripper of a mare…for connections. From a betting perspective, she’s been very hard to follow/trust, but this looks the perfect race for her. Bjorn Baker has tried to make her a Group l horse and I think she’s just a level below that top level. This looks her go, she flies fresh, two good trials leading in…all points to her going close. Can she get a big race win next to her name.
6 Tarzan (Bet Now: $9.50) will be the hope of the locals. He’s been a beauty for a number of seasons for Stuart Kendrick, predominantly over 1000m, but he is quite capable at 1200m. Lumped 63.5kg to win at the Sunny Coast last time over 1000m and I don’t care what class of race it was, or the depth, to carry 63.5kg and run 57.7 from the front is a massive effort. Tumbles in weight, lands on speed, he’ll give a great sight.
Race 5. (15:35) Magic Millions Fillies & Mares 1300m
1 Invincibella (Bet Now: $4.80) looks to be spot on to win this race for the third time on the bounce. Freshened up after the Empire Rose and ran in the Christmas Classic two weeks ago at Randwick where it was more or less a barrier trial for her, but the last 50m and through the line behind Madam Rouge was excellent. She’s primed for this race and I think she’ll only run well.
5 Tahitian Dancer (Bet Now: $9.00) won the Nudgee and got her way into this field via that win. What a win it was too. Two things helped her win. Firstly the crazy tempo set by Spirit’s Choice. But it was mainly the second point – an absolute gem from the master in Olly, saving ground nearer the inside and savaging the line. She likely gets back to last again but if she brings that finale from Eagle Farm to here, she’ll take some beating.
18 Romani Girl (Bet Now: $23.00) looks silly odds at $20+. Quality mare for Chris Waller that will love a fast run 1300m. Was hard in the market three weeks ago at Randwick but just looked liked she would improve with the run when a close up fourth to Taniko. Fitter, sits off a fast speed and she’ll be one of the strongest at the end against these.
Race 6. (16:15) Magic Millions Guineas 1400m
Don’t think I could back 2 Alligator Blood (Bet Now: $1.70) at the short odds, but can’t tip against him here because he does look the standout. David Vandyke has been very bullish about this horse all prep and suggested he would run a career best last time out in the Vo Rogue and on the clock, he definitely did. The depth here is far stronger, but he is just so reliable and tries hard.
5 Exhilarates (Bet Now: $14.00) is the one with upside and a proven performer at this stage having won the 2YO race last year. She resumed in the Gosford Guineas in what was a high rating event and loved the way she closed off her race behind Hightail, knowing there is plenty of room for improvement with her. She’ll eat up 1400m and be strong late.
No knock on 11 Star Surprise (Bet Now: $34.00) and what he did first up when winning at Pakenham. Admittedly he had the A1 run in transit behind the speed before Poy took the splits and the gelding dashed strongly the final furlong and was too good. Has been kept on ice with this race in mind and his trial win at the Gold Coast was very good. Plus, perhaps outside G Boss, is there a better big race rider in Australia at the moment than D Lane.
Race 7. (17:00) Magic Millions Classic 1200m
I think 1 King’s Legacy (Bet Now: $6.50) is one of a couple that will eat up a fast run 1200m. Had the A1 run in transit last start in the BJ McLachlan but still had to put them away and did so, especially the last 75m when knuckling down to the task. The Snowden team are sensational when it comes to setting one for a Grand Final, especially their younger gallopers. I think he’s the one to beat.
Visually, 5 Aim (Bet Now: $6.00) has been the most impressive of these youngsters on race day. Loved the way he finished off to win on debut at Rosehill, then went to Randwick where he lapped up a fast tempo and spanked his rivals. The knock with that Randwick win is that the overall time was slow relative to the day, but they went very hard early, so he’s ticked the hard 1200m box.
Said after her first trial back in September that 11 Gotta Kiss (Bet Now: $13.00) would be a leading local chance for this race and here she is, in winning form and it up to her ears. Heavily backed when resuming over 1000m at Eagle Farm and thanks to a lovely ground saving steer from Steph Thornton, she was too good. Little query on her at a strong 1200m but has the inside gate.
Race 8. (17:45) Magic Millions Cup 1400m
Looks a real target race for 8 Smartedge (Bet Now: $13.00) and while he was beaten in this race last year, 12 months later, I think he’s going better. Ran over 1400m at Randwick three weeks ago in a race totally dominated by Passage Of Time, who got things to suit in front and gave nothing else a look in. Smartedge actually did a good job to get as close as he did given the sustained run he had to make. Sits off a fast speed here and will be strong late.
If they do go silly in front, the closer will clearly be 10 Usain Bowler (Bet Now: $10.00) for John Sadler, another that’s been specifically targeted for this day. Forget he went around at Randwick last time. Lumped the big weight, did work in the run and tired late. He races best when sitting off a good speed and launching late, so that’s the set up he should get here.
2 Redouble (Bet Now: $13.00) won this race last year. Not sure he’s going as well 12 months on, but he’s clearly been set for the race. Good run at Randwick behind Passage Of Time after sitting wide no cover for the trip. Kept up to the mark with a Warwick Farm trial and while he has to carry the big weight, he does have the class factor on his side.
Race 9. (18:20) Magic Millions QTIS Open
6 Ef Troop (Bet Now: $9.00) just looks so well weighted here. Ran fast time in winning the Christmas Handicap two back at Morphettville before going to the Christmas Stakes at Caulfield on Boxing Day where it was a really ugly watch in the straight. Eventually got clear nearer the inside but the inside section at Caulfield last couple of meetings has been quicksand. Right down in the weights for this, lands near the speed…hard to beat.
5 River Racer (Bet Now: $13.00) is teasing to win a good race and would not shock me at all if she took this out. Just run off her legs in the Nudgee two weeks ago but like she can do, she caught the eye the last few strides when finishing off well. Has run well here in the past and if she gets the speed on with clear air in the straight, she can win.
14 Tokoriki Lad… (Bet Now: $10.00) still trying to get over him getting beat in this race last year after getting $20+ for him to start $7.50 and go down narrowly at the hands of Chapter And Verse. Another that has been specifically targeted for this race. Hasn’t won in a long time, but his two runs back from a break have been quite good, the latest in the Buffering behind Deep Image when outclassed but far from disgraced. Primed to run well.
