A nine race card has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:28) TAB Handicap 2200m
I reckon this is really good placement by the Gerald Ryan stable when it comes to 2 Harper’s Choice (Bet Now: $9.50). Hasn’t really done a great deal this time in, but bear in mind he has contested much stronger races than what he’ll face here, and and I didn’t mind his recent Rosehill trial behind Slipper winner Kiamichi. Think class just about gets him home against this lot.
5 Our Mantra (Bet Now: $1.60) has to step up to open company for the Heathcoate/Anderson stable but he’s just flying at the moment and deserves a crack. He ran over 2000m here last Saturday where he got a sweet run just off the speed and once Fradd asked for the big effort, the response was there and he was much too good for his rivals. Keen to see how he goes at this level.
1 Exoteric (Bet Now: $12.00) comes back to 2200m for Chris Waller after contesting the Queensland Cup last time where he was back in the run and never really a winning threat when down the track behind Azuro. His couple of runs prior to that do read quite well for this, but it’s been a little while since he has won, and bear in mind has been up a fair while, so not sure what upside he’s got left.
Race 2. (12:03) Queensland Country Highway Plate (Class 4) 1350m
5 Cavellton (Bet Now: $8.00) looks better than these. Just hope Doomben will be okay for him. Adrian Coome trains this five year old, who was ridden very quiet last time out at Rockhampton and the rewards were instant as he ambled up to them when given clear air and he put them away to win impressively. Just has to repeat that and he’ll be winning again.
8 Court Rules (Bet Now: $35.00) is a Graham Banks trained son of Court Command who comes to town in winning form, having led all the way to win over 1400m at Beaudesert last time, getting a cheap mid race breather before kicking on the turn and clinging on in the straight to get the win. Looks to land on speed here and if he doesn’t spend too many petrol tickets getting there, he’ll run a positive race.
14 Run Pam Run (Bet Now: $51.00) is one to watch. Former Busuttin/Young runner that has had a few runs in Queensland. Last couple have come at Ipswich. Two back she was a mile out of her ground but found the line well late. Last time they rode her on speed and it just back fired in a total forgive. Better ridden with a sit, so if that eventuates, I think she’ll be dangerous and is one for multiples.
Race 3. (12:38) Robinson Nielson Legal Handicap (75) 1050m
Going to have a throw at the stumps in including the Sam Strazzieri trained mare 17 Allena (Bet Now: $20.00), who is first up. I think she’s come back well if her Deagon trial win is any guide. She led all the way, bolted in and ran really good time, despite not really being extended by Jackson Murphy. Her recent form from last prep was at the provincials, but I reckon she’s worth something very small e/w here.
Really interesting runner is 8 Italia Bella (Bet Now: $7.00), a Stuart Kendrick trained mare that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced in over 12 months since racing over the mile here when down the track behind Gold Ambition. Can sprint well fresh and liked the way she went in a recent Sunny Coast trial win. Has a touch of class/quality about her when right so watch the market.
Lindsay Gough has 5 Oradonna (Bet Now: $10.00) going really well at the moment. Was three weeks between runs when racing over 1200m at Doomben a few weeks ago where she was back near last in the run and did make ground but the only problem was that the horse in front and bolting was Pippie, who looks blacktype quality. Hoping for her sake that it’s a genuine tempo.
Race 4. (13:13) Aqwa Construction Handicap 1200m
I can’t believe 8 Kasita (Bet Now: $15.00) is at the odds she is. Tony Webb trains this filly, who ran over 1050m here last Saturday, coming back in trip, and I think she should have fought the finish out. Just had no luck in the straight when bolting behind the speed but the leaders stopped in her tracks and she went to the line like a barrier trial. Gets Mick Cahill on from the inside gate and like her back up to 1200m. 1×3 at around $20 will do me.
1 Alligator Blood (Bet Now: $3.70) is a son of All Too Hard for the David Vandyke stable that resumes. This bloke had two runs in the Summer to start his career, winning both times in impressive fashion and was touted as a potential Golden Slipper candidate but was tipped out. Been given a decent spell and while he has the runs on the board, I thought the trial was just fair. Does class get him home?
7 Concealed Dynamite (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Les Ross trained filly who has race fitness on her side and winning form next to her name. She was really well tried when racing over 1400m last time and she was just too good for her rivals, sitting on speed and kicking strongly to get the job done. Not as sharp as a couple engaged here, but lands on speed and will be hard to run down with hard fitness.
Race 5. (13:48) Eureka Stud Handicap (0MW) 1200m
5 Precipitate (Bet Now: $7.00) on top. Wayne Nugent trains this mare, who ran at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where she was a bit keen behind the speed and that energy probably left her without petrol tickets late when fourth to Adoradancer. Looks to be a good tempo on the cards and she should get a lovely run off it. Think she’s a relatively safe option in a tough race.
1 Tardis (Bet Now: $4.00) has been a real model of consistency for the Edmonds camp. This mare was a month between runs when attempting to lead all the way over 1200m at Eagle Farm last time where she gave a good kick under Maloney but couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for a close up third to Adoradancer. Gets the claim for Nothdurft and with a cheap furlong in front, she could be hard to run down.
I reckon the little freshen up should suit the Kelly Schweida trained 12 Flower Of Love (Bet Now: $9.00). This mare is a month between runs since racing here when just off the speed and trying hard but was no match for the brilliance of Pippie. Her best runs recently have come with fresh legs and she draws to get a lovely run just off the speed. Her best is good enough to measure up.
Race 6. (14:27) Gollan Racing Handicap (0MW) 1200m
5 Unlikely Story (Bet Now: $4.00) is a son of Star Witness for the Tony Gollan stable who was kept relatively safe in betting first up over 1000m at Eagle Farm and despite being beaten, I thought his run had merit in it given the race was dominated by those near the speed/rail and he was back near last in the run. Like him up to 1200m and he doesn’t need to sit so far back this time around.
7 All Important (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Tony Gollan trained gelding that really struggled on the bog track first up behind New Horizons before finding firmer footing next time out and he was much too good for his rivals in an impressive bounce back to positive form. Was only second up so you’d like to think there is room for improvement and 1200m seems his A1 trip.
3 Amenzel (Bet Now: $10.00) would be really hard to beat if this was at the Gold Coast given his outstanding record there, so it’ll be interesting to see how he goes at Doomben. Ran at the Gold Coast last time in a small field and was too good for his rivals, once of which is Mogador, a more than capable galloper. That reads okay for this. His form away from the Gold Coast doesn’t, which is the concern.
Race 7. (15:07) Munce Racing Handicap (70) 1630m
3 Galtero (Bet Now: $5.00) is on the seven day back up for Tony Gollan since racing in an open handicap here last Saturday where he was a bit outclassed and the tempo was against him, but I thought his effort was full of merit in defeat behind Shaquin. Drops to 70 grade, gets gate one, the claim for Nothdurft…there’s plenty to like about him and the $6+ is more than acceptable.
14 Great Powers (Bet Now: $6.00) is an absolute beauty for the Les Ross team that rarely runs a bad race. This mare ran over 1500m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago when doing work in the run out wide and was entitled to drop away but kept coming and was only bloused late by Red Doulton. That form reads well for this I think and the depth here is nowhere near as strong as last time.
I’m keen to see how 13 Steelz Time (Bet Now: $17.00) measures up for Adrian Coome. This four year old is just over two weeks between runs since producing an electric finish from the back to claim the Townsville Guineas in a race which has been good as a form reference with already a couple of winners to come from it. Stable has been going well since starting up and he’s certainly one to watch.
Race 8. (15:47) Kelly Schweida Racing Handicap 1630m
I’m really keen on the Gary Duncan trained 10 Magnufighter (Bet Now: $3.30). This gelding comes through the Tatts Mile from three weeks ago at Eagle Farm where he tried hard and loomed to win but couldn’t quite finish the job when third to Silvera. Gets in really well at the weights and for mine, he’s much better suited at Doomben. Keen on his chances here.
1 Silvera (Bet Now: $2.90) has done a ripping job in recent times for the Tony Gollan stable. Slogged it out best in testing conditions to win the Rockhampton Cup before going to the Tatts Mile where Brad Stewart gave the grey a peach of a ride just off the speed and the six year old finished best to get the job done. Like the way he’s going about it and is a proven weight carrier.
9 The Chairman (Bet Now: $10.00) should take good improvement off the first up run over 1400m at Eagle Farm. This Michael Costa trained galloper looked to get a good run just off the speed and tried hard but given he is a horse suited at 2000m+, he didn’t quite have the dash to go with them late when sixth to Looks Like Elvis. Might need one more, but like him up to the mile.
Race 9. (16:27) Queensland Country Life Plate (Class 6) 1350m
I think early on in the prep is the best time to catch the Tony Gollan trained 1 Brains (Bet Now: $14.00) so with that in mind, I’ll give him respect. He is first up here after a really good Summer/Autumn prep, highlighted by two wins in his opening two runs for the prep before his form tapered away late. Did have two trials leading into first up last prep. Has only had one this time around, and looked pretty good when a close up fourth to Jardin Rouge. Keen to see how he goes.
14 Tokoriki Lad…(Bet Now: $5.00) gee he’s one frustrating horse. I was really keen on him when he raced over 1400m at Eagle Farm three weeks ago and looked the winner on the turn but he just wanted to duck in under pressure and didn’t really want to take the narrow gap between runners. Convinced he’s going and a win isn’t far off…but you need deep pockets to keep buttering up.
7 Impasse (Bet Now: $5.00) is a son of Sepoy for Chris Waller that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since April 27 at Eagle Farm when running a close up fourth to Insensata after getting a good run near the speed. 1350m fresh tells me he’s forward enough for a first up win and the recent trial indicates that. It was sharp and he ran sharp time. Keen to see how he goes.
