The Adelaide Carnival continues this Saturday at Morphettville, where it is Port Adelaide Guineas Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder.

Race 1. (12:36) Happy 90th B'day C Wilson-bm82 1200m
1 Designer Chef (Bet Now:Β $3.40) is a ripper for Mark Webb that is always around the mark. Just somewhat outclassed in the Sale Sprint two back. Had a mini freshen up before racing on the Parks track. Was backed with confidence late and under a lovely ride from Ryan Hurdle, he wore them down late and was impressive. That was in an 82. This one looks harder but he’s genuine.
6 Calypso Reign (Bet Now:Β $3.10) deserves another chance. His racing pattern isn’t flash, but he has a decent engine and is certainly good enough to win here. Thrown in the deep end last time out in the Manihi in search of a potential Goodwood start. He just found the class a bit rich behind Mileva. Better suited here and is hard to beat.
3 Magna Bella (Bet Now:Β $7.00) is an Andrew Clarken trained mare that resumes. Hasn’t raced since the latter part of the Spring when attempting to lead throughout in the Kilmore Cup. She gave a mini kick but the mile at that level just found her out when a close up fourth to Pancho. She’s a good fresh horse and has trialled well in readiness.
Race 2. (13:11) Tab (bm72) 2025m
5 Sky Horse (Bet Now:Β $3.80) on top. Maher/Eustace mare that is at 2000m for the second start on the bounce and we know that set up is ideal, more so the stable in 2000m+ races. That 2000m run came at the Valley on William Reid night and she was good from the back when third to Green Ivy. Upside, has runs on the board and I think she’s a great bet in what is a relatively thin race.
4 Exalted Beast (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is a Grant Young trained four year old that is in a purple patch. Sharp winner two back at Balaklava before proving that was no fluke when a strong winner on the Parks track three weeks back. Harder here, but hard to knock the way he’s going and stable is in form.
10 Plaisir (Bet Now:Β $41.00) is on the seven day back up for John Hickmott after racing last Saturday at Oakbank over 1900m. He was well tried to win the race and lobbed into a decent spot in the run. Loomed to win but just whacked away late when third to Charlton. Needs to improve but has upside and up in trip no issue.
Race 3. (13:46) Happy 60th B'day S Hill (bm70) 1200m
This is well and truly D-Day for 4 Highly Discreet (Bet Now:Β $3.90). Contender or pretender time for this filly. She just keeps screaming out as a ‘Back me next start’ type. Problem is you do that and she does it again. Was good in defeat fresh in the Typhoon Tracy before going to Adelaide Cup Day where she was back and wide and kept finding the line behind impressive winner Echoes In Eternity. Has to be winning this if she’s going to be a blacktype force in the Carnival.
1 Extra Time (Bet Now:Β $9.00) should be suited back to his own age. They tried to get him towards a Goodwood I dare say given last start was the Manihi, and he just didn’t measure up at all. This looks more his go and with the 3kg claim, I think he’s well in so it just depends what sort of form he is in.
7 Daily Spirit (Bet Now:Β $11.00) looks better suited back to the short course. Macdonald/Gluyas trained filly that ran over 1100m here two back on the course proper here where she was near the speed throughout and battled away pretty well in defeat I thought behind stablemate and the heavily backed Pimm’s Party. Then freshened up for an Oakbank 1050m contest and she was impressive after sitting wide no cover. Leading chance.
Race 4. (14:21) Dequetteville Stakes 1050m
1 Cloudy (Bet Now:Β $4.60) has the right form to be winning this. Shared the spoils fresh at Bendigo with Seradess, who gave some of these a spanking on Adelaide Cup Day. Cloudy then went to Bendigo again and was good late from the back behind a potential Stakes class horse, Starry Legend. That just reads so well for a race like this.
Bigger track and extra trip looks a good recipe for 7 Princess Raffles (Bet Now:Β $9.50). Was on her back a few weeks ago on the Parks track over 1000m. She ran well, but just lacked the change up speed to go with them when it mattered, finishing a close up third. Think this set up is more appealing for her.
10 Starsongari (Bet Now:Β $101.00) is a definite improver here I feel. Thrown in the deep end on debut in the Cinderella on Adelaide Cup Day and just found the class a bit rich when down the track in a race that rated well for the meeting. Had jumped out well prior, so giving her a look here at odds.
Race 5. (15:02) Autumn Racing Carnival (bm76) 1600m
11 Robe Bay (Bet Now:Β $3.30) on top. Peter Hardacre trained mare that resumed in the Gold Bracelet at Bendigo, somewhat thrown in the deep end, and I thought she ran out of her skin when a close up fourth, and you could argue she goes close to winning with clear air. Any hint of improvement off that and she’s clearly the one to beat here.
9 Exalted Traveller (Bet Now:Β $4.60) looks a relatively safe option. Grant Young trains this iron horse, who has been up a fair while but continues to hold his form really well. He did an excellent job out of his lane two back in the CS Hayes Cup behind Ironclad. Then dropped back to this grade three weeks ago on the Parks track and tried hard. Was run down late by a handy animal in Don’tdreamit’sover. Hard to beat.
8 Alsvior (Bet Now:Β $11.00) has a touch of class compared to some of these and looks to have come back in good order. Ran over 1400m on the Parks track a few weeks ago where he was near the speed throughout and battled on pretty well behind Angaston, finishing fourth. Third up, hard fit now, definite chance.
Race 6. (15:46) 36 South Beef (bm60) 1520m
16 Canidae (Bet Now:Β $23.00) on top but it’s a bludger of a race. He doesn’t win out of turn but has rarely been far away of late, his latest run being a closing third at Bordertown at this trip behind Saduka. Was 1200m stepping up in trip that afternoon so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
5 Reynolds (Bet Now:Β $3.50) is a very interesting runner. Didn’t fire in Hong Kong but Michael Hickmott got him, made the Australian debut last Saturday at Oakbank in what was a target race. Backed as if unbeatable and he duly saluted like he was a good thing. Harder here, and he beat camels last weekend, but is in the right camp.
12 The Cook (Bet Now:Β $41.00) looks to have returned well. Both runs back from a break have come at Sale, resuming with a win over 1400m before stepping up to 1700m and in a sit/sprint, given she was back in the run, she had no chance, so a total forgive. Off the resumption, she’s in the mix.
Race 7. (16:26) Port Adelaide Guineas 1800m
14 Ecumenical (Bet Now:Β $3.40) is a beauty for Mick Huxtable. Disappointing/forgiving fresh effort behind Echoes In Eternity after sitting four wide no cover for the trip. She stepped up to the mile in the Clare Lindop and bounced back to her best, leading throughout and was strong to the line. Hard to beat.
13 Chica Fuerte (Bet Now:Β $3.00) has the class factor and that can nearly get her over the line. Few weeks between runs since leading throughout to win the Alexandra on William Reid Night at the Valley. The pattern for the night was find the fence/rail and you’re nearly home. She found that spot and it was race over. Form out of it has been mixed but overall, her form just reads so well.
3 Casino Seventeen (Bet Now:Β $16.00) is on the seven day back up for Travis Doudle after winning impressively last Saturday at Oakbank. Admittedly he didn’t beat much but he put them away quite impressively and relative to the day, he ran good time. Progressive and the way he’s racing, 1800m should be fine.
Race 8. (17:01) Furphy (bm68) 1200m
11 He’s A Balter (Bet Now:Β $3.90) is a former Gelagotis runner that now finds himself with Will Clarken and I find it is such a positive when he gets a tried horse. Very rarely he picks a horse up and they go backwards/not win. This horse is racing well. Last run came on Feb 27 at Murray Bridge when a closing second to Justica. Has the Clarken polish, he can sit back and finish over the top.
Now that 3 Midnight Storm (Bet Now:Β $3.70) has a win on the board, he could well go on with it. Three weeks between runs since racing over 1250m on the Parks track where he lobbed into a sweet spot under Stubby and once he was presented clear air, it was race over and he was dominant. Hard to beat against this lot.
9 Just Chipping Away (Bet Now:Β $17.00) is getting to a more suitable trip I feel. Both runs have come over the short course of 1000m and has just found them a bit sharp, but wasn’t too bad late I thought last time out behind Larkham. Not sure I could back her to win here, but one to include in wider multiples.
Race 9. (17:40) Barossa Fine Foods (bm60) 1100m
Was great to see 3 Appalachian (Bet Now:Β $4.60) back at the races several weeks ago and further to that, great to see him attack the line first. He’s been a tease pretty much throughout his career but when he puts it all together, he is quite a capable sprinter, as we saw when resuming on the Parks track. You’d like to think there is improvement and upside to come.
14 Future Force (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is such a fascinating runner. Another tried horse that makes its debut for Will Clarken and I’d have him as the best in Australia when it comes to improving a tried horse. This girl was formerly with Team Snowden and did show promise. Just couldn’t quite measure up at midweek metro level in Melbourne. Now with Clarken, really keen to see how she goes.
1 Call Me Curtis (Bet Now:Β $10.00) is an absolute beauty for Craig Curtis. Not sure I could back him to win but he’s very honest and will put himself on speed, giving himself every chance. That was the case three weeks ago when a gutsy third to Midnight Storm after leading. Lands on speed and will give his all.
