1/8/2020 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Belmont

Nine races will be run and won at Belmont on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

Think a rise to 1200m will suit the Chris Willis trained mare 7 Petite La Femme (Bet Now: $8.00). Was keen on her when she raced over 1000m here two weeks ago and yes, she was held up for a period of time in the straight, but when clear, she didn’t finish off as well as expected. Like her up to 1200m and hopefully can take advantage of gate one.

6 Fire Goddess (Bet Now: $4.20) is not far off a maiden win for the Harvey camp. Attempted to lead throughout over 1300m at Northam last time out. Copped pressure on speed and was entitled to drop away, but kept grinding to the line and was a definite pass mark when second to The Thunderess. Senior jock takes over, should land near the speed and is hard to run down.

3 Time Starts Now (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Colin Webster trained son of Trade Fair who resumed over 1200m at Pinjarra last Thursday and thought he was a real eye catcher from off the speed, working home with purpose behind Noble Spirit. Would love a rise to 1400m for him, but if they overdo it in front, he’ll finish over the top.

4 Clairvoyance (Bet Now: $3.60) looks a safe option for the McAuliffe team. Daughter of Nostradamus that was heavily supported when debuting over 1000m here three weeks ago and despite doing early work to get on speed, she showed good change up speed when clicked up by Parnham and held a margin on the line to record a good win. Scratched from last Saturday to be saved for another 1000m contest and is hard to beat.

2 Panzdown (Bet Now: $2.00) is a Simon Miller trained juvenile that comes here off the back of a strong debut win at this track/distance last Wednesday when sitting just off the speed and when clicked up by Pike, the turn of foot was there and I thought he was impressive in winning. Harder here, but think he can measure up.

Paul Jordan had a couple nominated, but goes with the sole rep in 7 Janaura (Bet Now: $20.00), who ran second to Panzdown in the race mentioned above. This filly probably did a bit too much work to find the front from the wide gate and that took away something from her finale, being no match late for Panzdown. Gets a 2kg weight pull on Panzdown here and draws better.

2 Burning Pride (Bet Now: $2.25) clearly on top for me. Holly Taylor has this mare absolutely flying and is ready to win third up from a break. Not much luck fresh before stepping up to 2200m here a fortnight back and ran second to Sentimental Gift in a good effort. Hard fit, close to it at least, gets gate one and Pike, who has won on her before when Team Williams trained. Bad luck the only thing beating her.

7 Dark Prospect (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Neville Parnham trained stayer that’s potentially on a path towards the Kalgoorlie Carnival. He ran in the Sentimental Gift from a fortnight back here. He was well specked at odds but seemed to get every chance when fifth to the Team Williams mare. Can win this, but will need things to fall into place.

6 Champagne Gal (Bet Now: $101.00) is one I could include in exotics. On the quick back up after racing over 2200m here last Saturday where he was off the speed throughout and seemed to get a good run into the race, but just whacked away under pressure behind the dominant winner Truly Great. Not sure he wins, but can fill a first four spot.

Now he’s had the 1600m run under the belt, 3 Not To Be Mist (Bet Now: $1.90) should be better for that and I’m going to give him another chance. He’s heading down a similar path to stablemate Massimo in the sense he had a run of outs and let punters down. He closed off strongly two weeks ago when third to Wrinkly, but was beaten as a short priced elect again. Last chance territory.

I’m wary of 8 Jeraft (Bet Now: $12.00). Been on him a few times but dropped off after his effort two back. Ran two weeks ago over this track/distance and nearly made me get a new TV but he couldn’t quite get past his toughnut stablemate Wrinkly. Remains down in the weights and tempo won’t be as strong this time around.

Think a rise to the mile is ideal for 5 Military Ruler (Bet Now: $5.50), who is on the quick back up after racing last Saturday over 1400m here. Was near the speed throughout and battled away pretty well in defeat when fourth to Inspirational Girl. Really good record at the mile and now fifth up after a year break, he’ll be at peak fitness, or very close to it, and love the use of the claim for Azzopardi.

The quick back up and back 100m in trip is enough to sway me the way of the in form 4 Position Of Power (Bet Now: $7.50). Ran over 1400m here last Saturday and was there to win when the button was pushed. Just couldn’t quite see it out at Saturday level when bloused late by Put A Spell On You. Back to 1300m and slightly back in overall depth, he’ll do me.

7 Inflation (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Darren McAuliffe trained gelding that ran second to Position Of Power over 1400m here back on July 15. Attempted to lead throughout and gave a good kick under Pateman but just found the David Harrison trained gelding too good on the day. Lands near the speed here and will prove hard to run down.

3 War God (Bet Now: $19.00) is getting on in years for Neville Parnham but is around the mark for the most part, is honest and tries hard. That’s what he did a fortnight back over 1200m here when fourth to Massimo. Like that he rises back up in trip and if he can get a soft run just off the speed, he’ll be dangerous at odds.

Some Pike magic was a big reason why 5 Dark Mission (Bet Now: $2.20) got the win at this track/distance first up last Wednesday. The mare looked in a tricky spot on the turn but the genius of Pike was able to slice his way through the field and was too good on the line. Got enormous upside. Just a knock on remaining at 1200m.

9 Born To Try (Bet Now: $8.50) is a daughter of Blackfriars for Ross Price that resumes. This mare hasn’t raced since October 31 at Bunbury when placing over the mile behind a handy one, Fuhrer. Was 1200m to 1690m that day, so the run had plenty of merit. Been given a good break and Lark Hill trial win back in mid June was pretty good. Watch the market.

4 Round The Point (Bet Now: $10.00) is a little query at 1200m, but he’s a tough customer for Steve Wolfe that is more often than not around the mark. Had a mini freshen up prior to racing over 1000m here a fortnight back when near the speed and though tiring late, far from disgraced in defeat behind Long Beach. If he can get on speed and do no work, 1200m will be okay.

7 Mervyn (Bet Now: $3.90) will make sure this is a proper 1000m and will look the winner for a long way. Resumed in the Beaufine three weeks ago when giving an enormous sight from the front, leading until the last couple of strides when grabbed by Essential Spice. He’ll lead this field up for sure and look the winner for most of the race. Just needs to hold on the final 50-75m.

3 Essential Spice (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Team Pearce trained mare that should take a power of beating here off the back of her Beaufine win. She was chasing what was a brutal tempo set by Mervyn but she ended up being strongest on the line in winning and clocked the best last 200m of the race, so with that in mind, she’s the one to beat.

10 Jericho Missile (Bet Now: $5.50) can be an improver here second up. Talented four year old for David Harrison that resumed over 1200m here two weeks ago when unwanted in betting late and ran accordingly, not really producing much of a go in the straight behind Massimo. You’d like to think he’ll improve with the run under the belt and his best is clearly enough.

5 Danny George (Bet Now: $13.00) looks the best on the card. Brett Pope trained sprinter that resumed at this track/distance two weeks and was one of the runs of the meeting, finishing off hard from near last when third to Long Beach. Can sit much closer in the run from the inside gate and the depth here is nowhere near as strong.

7 Cliffs Of Comfort (Bet Now: $2.60) is a fascinating runner. Team Pearce trained four year old that resumes after an opening prep which saw him win 3/3, the second win seeing him thump a quality animal, Laverrod. Belmont trial last week was good and despite a tricky gate, does have early toe to overcome the wide barrier.

8 Missing Pro (Bet Now: $14.00) hasn’t done much wrong this time in for Lindsey Smith and I think can measure up here. Comes here off the back of a win a couple of Thursdays back at Northam when near the speed throughout under Corver and was entitled to perhaps drop away late, but found and was too good. Tricky draw, but hard to knock the way he’s going.

11 Montelena (Bet Now: $2.50) looks ready to win for the McAuliffe team. Just ran out of condition first up behind Tiff Has Spoken before stepping up to 1400m here a few weeks ago when near the speed and battled strongly when fourth to Zero Demerits. Up to 1600m I do like for her and third up from a break, should be just about at peak fitness.

1 Aconite (Bet Now: $11.00) is a daughter of Discorsi for Brett Pope that ran over this track/distance two weeks ago. Pateman put her into a lovely spot just off the speed and was there to be a winning threat at the top of the straight but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Puckapunyal. Think maybe with a more conservative steer, she’ll be more effective late, as we saw last prep when at the trip.

6 Fire Maker (Bet Now: $18.00) could be the sneaky one at odds here. Ran over 1400m here three weeks ago and had absolutely no luck at all in the straight. Doubt he beats Inspirational Girl, who won again last Saturday, but clearly should have finished much closer. Unknown at 1600m, but is racing as if it will suit. Just needs luck from the draw.

LONG SHOT: Race Eight Number 5 Danny George
